I remember watching the ceremony and being very disappointed that she didn't. Felt like Sarandon got it just because they felt she was "due" after 5 nominations and no wins. That year was actually the last acting nomination for Sarandon, Emma Thompson, Shue and Sharon Stone. Sarandon, Shue and Stone really needed it that year, they just couldn't all get it.
It's such a shame that her career struggled after this movie, and she never again had another role that made this much impact, or even got nominated for an award. I hope she has another career comeback.

Yep I was devastated by it myself because it was a deeply disturbing movie. She is a beloved actress and after starring in fun movies like Karate Kid and Adventures in Babysitting I was shocked that Shue would star in this particular movie.
She was great in the film. Kinda understated, low key, but very emotional, strong performance. You felt the emotions bubbling underneath the surface at all times. Great casting and performance, very different as a female role.
She is my favourite actress now. So beautiful, talented, cute. She is full of dramatic talent in all her gestures and emotions. She had told me this movie woke her up to the bad life descions she was making. I tried to help her in her life but ultimately she was too wild to be tamed lol. After we split up, she decided to join the army. It helped her regain her career life and she made a life for herself. She got married had another child and lived abroad. But when her duty was over she returned to the States. It was not a good thing for her. Her marriage fell apart and she got involved with the wrong crowd on the local bar scene. Met some slick bozo and started partying again. I tried to help her a bit again but she did her own thing. One day i got a call from her boyfriend, he was crying. I got the call that she had OD and was found dead 😢. Story was he had got her hooked on opioids because he had a addiction. He fled the area after that in fear of what people would do to him. Tragic true story that still haunts me, her name was Elizabeth also. Life is very fragile, be careful out there folks
