This movie gave me a really hard time to watch because it's so disturbingly beautiful, two lost soul found each other for a brief time, but they lost each other and it is incredibly sad and depressing but at the same time... Isn't this the life? Now matter how much happiness you got in life, you have to embrace every moment of it and be grateful of it! Heartbreakingly good performance from both of the actors.
"I'll tell you right now, I'm in love with you. But be that as it may, I am not here to force my twisted soul into your life" as a tear runs from his eye. Cage nailed this role, showing inner turmoil and a deep depression without actually changing his expression.
Ben's soul naturally entered Sera's life and change her forever. That's what they met for. That was their destiny. To live this tragic, beautiful, moving love story.
that is the whole point of the movie. these are characters that society deems unlovable and in spite of their circumstances, for a brief moment in their lives they find something a lot of people--those that are supposedly better-off than they--are not able to find.
@Hubert Humphrey it’s hard to tell if we are better. Most people never find out what’s real love is, most just settle with what’s comfortable and that’s the reason I believe is why so many marriages end up divorcing. I think it’s better to feel something beautiful just once in a short life then never in a long life. But anyway no one should become an alcoholic
@Hubert Humphrey I don't know what you mean by “better off”, do you mean financially? Psychologically? Circumstantially? We are meant to relate to these people, to the loneliness they experience by being on the fringe of society, of partaking in behaviour society deems immoral or unproductive. The point is these are two very kind people who happen to be two lost souls. Perhaps they are better than us for finding someone who understands and accepts them exactly for who they are. That they could find unconditional love, no matter how fleeting the experience was.
If they’re ‘unloveable’ it’s because they create problems for themselves and others. Lot of drunks put other people at risk when they get behind the wheel of a car. Ben himself as just a character throughout the film tends to create a lot of broken glass waste, destroys personal and public property, gets into fights, forgets and violates all kinds of social boundaries… As for sex workers, it depends. Lot of them don’t do the responsible thing and get tested for HIV/HepB/Herpes/Gonorrhea/Chlamydia every week like those in actual legal brothels in the state of Nevada. Many are dishonest and use scam artist and thief tactics to get more money out of ‘Johns’ and cheat people - and have the criminal record to match. It’s a two way street, as solicitation is also a crime. However, there’s tons of pimps AND prostitutes that exploit or groom others into that way of life to try and make more money - which is kinda scummy when you think on it.
The vast amount of Normal” people will never experience this flash of heart racing, shivering, goosebump tingling feverish feeling they call “love” for lack of a better word…. Which I’d why they are better off than most despite they’re so called abnormalities
Yep, as an ED RN I have seen people having major DTs like he portrayed in this film. He deserved that Oscar. In fairness, so did Elisabeth Shue. That performance was so raw and restrained. While Susan Sarandon was equally brilliant and long overdue for her Oscar, if ever there were a year for a tie it was 1995!
He spent a month in Ireland getting drunk preparing for this role. He had a friend with him filming him whilst drunk so he could mimic the actions of a drunk man.
My friend please try inner engineering by Sadhguru , if not this some sort of meditation , I'm certain inner engineering and the practice (shambhavi mahamudra) will help you beyond your wildest dreams. I was never a drunk, but for years I thought it was cool to have a small metal hip flask. I kept it out of sight, and it was filled my own blend of 90 proof vodka, and a bit of blackberry schnapps. A couple sips every so often relaxed me.
1:44 Romantic but deceptive. He is obviously not totally at peace with her profession. He later says hurtful things to her about it and he becomes jealous and comes home with another woman.
Ben said they could buy 45 pairs of underwear for himself and throw them away each day. Did he calculate it would take him around 45 days to drink himself to death? When he said that, Sera brushed it off as drunk talk, but I get the feeling she knew exactly what he meant by it...
This scene in the movie is very important in my mind. She buys him the flask, two flawed people who know there’s not much time, but are still going to enjoy each other for who they are while they can. A great love story, dark, but I love story for sure
"between the hundred and one proof breath and the occasional drool something interesting falls out of your mouth." -brilliant line. Only "Lolita" comes close to the degradation and depravity, and despair expressed here between them. Not that either of these two is a minor, but they are complicit in their ''race to the bottom'' of life.
I remember in the 90s my alcoholic stepfather got a beer duffle bag from a local convenience store for being a loyal customer of the booze. He felt the same way been did.. it was sad as fuck
Saw this as a nineteen year old with what was to become the love of my life then like Ben I tried killing my self with poison ,we both did .I made it out but my love didn’t .R.I.P Sammy

@kingofmilwaukee6969 Romance? She's a codependent and he's a drunk that has no clue how a sober life works anymore. Not romantic but sad. What do you mean by outsider? I think another codependent would consider this romantic.
hate this movie. i firmly believes it gives people the wrong idea. hope is never lost. i always feel like i need a shower after watching this fucking movie.
Only in a self-loathing society bent on destroying itself while destroying as much of the rest of the world as possible, could a scene like this be construed as 'unconditional love'. Such people are mentally ill and require psychological and spiritual help. But all they want is more alcohol, and more sex. And continual acceptance for their destructive behavior. Sick. And this stuff wins Academy awards.
"(they expect) continual acceptance for their destructive behaviour"? How did you come to that conclusion from this scene, or the whole movie even? These people barely manage to slip through the tiniest of gap of full-on society rejection, just to fall on the edge right at the end of the gap because there is no feasible access to the helps you mentioned, and they know why.
I came to the conclusion from watching the entire movie. The characters are in no way rejected by society. The girl is making money off of it, and the guy is wrapped up in self pity, and alcoholic self-medication. At least neither of them blame society for their ills. But they don't look at themselves long enough to see what causes them - themselves.@@anggungunara
The tear that you see rolling down his cheek when he is lying down shows how so sorry he is about the inevitable.

This is the greatest example of unconditional love in the history of cinema.
Beautifully put. Yes, it's unforgettable. Greetings from 10 years in the future!

So good, every bit of it, Cage is off the charts and Shue is perfect.
If this was real he would have tears streaming down his face. No man has ever had a love like this.
I'm thinking about my love too🌊
The reason he ain’t crying is cause he’s fucking hammered genius it’s not that deep lol
Two lost souls meet. I used to have a Sera in my life. But alas she is no longer here. I miss her a lot. 😢

Man I want a wife who loves me as much as Sera loved Ben. Elizabeth Shue is wife of a lifetime in this movie.
As dark as the movie is, I still find their connection to be beautiful.
I think it is one of the most precious connections i have ever seen in a movie
It's one of those rare movies that actually uses art to tell the absolute truth about life.
It is a beautiful connection
This is so emotional, hits me hard
