  • 1942 Clip, One Of the most sturring voices to ever record. There are so few of Vera Lynn's performances on film during the 40's. This one is from the movie "We'll Meet Again". She was 25 and had been doing her weekly radio show "Sincerely Your's" for 2 years, broadcast throughtout occupied europe. Voted "The Forces Sweetheart" , She inspired and comforted her nation during It's darkest hour. A true National Hero, All before she was 30..Not Bad! She really did have one of the great voices in history, no hyperbole.

    I agree: she's a true treasure who brought joy to millions of people during WW II. She did have that special personality and charisma. It must have been wonderful to hear her live in those years, despite the horrors that were going on, the blitz, as we hear, for one....

    I first heard this song in Lincoln in August 2018 during the celebration for the anniversary of the RAF.... It's become one of my favorite songs ever since, so meaningful and cheerful.... Lest we forget.

    'When you're up to your neck in hot water, be like the kettle and sing . . . '
    I wonder who wrote the text - it's brilliant, taking two disparate metaphorical ideas and marrying them unexpectedly. Obvious war-time resonances here. The sound of the whistling kettle (the cuppa was indigenous to the English psyche) soothed people's nerves, and Vera's voice comforted a nation in hot water . . .

    No wonder this lot won: they were as bonkers as the lyrics of this song! Great performance.

    This was a very big record and I think this film version is even better. It's only when you see Vera on film that you realize she had a sensational figure and carriage. As a singer she was and is one of a kind.

      Wayne Brasler The Movie Version of the song is better than the Studio version :( because of the orchestra accompanying her, giving a rich retro sound. I can't find the (Song in the Movie Version) In TH-cam.

    Hey thanks for the comment on my Vera effort - glad you enjoyed it, I can't rightly replicate the purity and clarity of voice that she had - like a silver bell I always thought... Still we all have our own sound which is for the best. This is one of my favourite songs I used to sing as a kid all the time, happy days!!

    Why kettle?

    • @RobertLocksley385
      @RobertLocksley385 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Kettles in the days before electricity was available in every home were boiled by a hob on a coal or wood-fired stove, and to tell you that the water was hot enough, the spout had a valve that whistled by means of escaping steam when the water boiled. It may be just a British peculiarity, but we still have such things even in this age of all gadgets electric. Those of us aged over forty had grandparents who owned such things in those days, and the delight of a kettle "singing" is considered a wonderful memory by many of us who enjoyed those halcyon days when such things as "singing" kettles were commonplace.
