@@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll Fearne is exactly in Ashley's element and how the character makes all the difference when it comes to matching the player. Yasha was great but she is clearly having more fun as a little chaos goblin instead of a brooding barbarian with a dark backstory.
Matt literally had this Ogre chef that probably was meant to make it seem more challenging to get past him, and had to make him a fleshed out character because the party roped them into a date to keep them out of trouble. This is peak DND
I love that the group just immediately jump in when someone starts a lie, like chetney is whispering like a ghost?, yea lets go unsettling presence, ok lets levitate this thing. and "omg I think there's a ghost" nothing but 100% commitment straight away.
It’s almost meta-gaming given there’s no way everyone could know the sudden plan right? Like when Dorian made Chetney invisible, how did anybody else know to stall and open the door? Maybe Imogen would know and tell everyone, I guess? It doesn’t matter I just am curious and overthink things

Seems like Fearne likes to collect experiences (as well as any trinkets she can grab), and this seems like an experience she wouldn't get many opportunities to collect.

I was sad when there weren't creepy whispers during Laudna's first message. I thought maybe they weren't going to do it anymore. Then they did it for the second one and I couldn't be more pleased.
At first I was confused when they did, because I thought she had a telepathy feature that caused the strange echoes, then I went and rewatched past episodes and realized I misheard her first use of the spell.

We now immortalize the ogre, "Pretty" into the Crit Role NPC Hall of Fame. He now joins names such as Henry Crabgrass, Pumat Sol, Shaun Gilmore, Orly Skiffback and Victor. Who knows what kind of character "The Bell Trollers" might meet next. I certainly did think we would meet that Slenderman/Jack Skelington Gremlin this episode.
Characters like Pumat Sol, Gilmore, and Orly - while fantastic - are a lil different cuz Matt prepared them to be loveable. Dudes like Henry Crabgrass, Sun Tree, and Pretty are pure reactions to the players birthed spontaneously from Matt's subconscious

Am I missing something with this? I cringed so bad when she said that. Travis' eyes went straight to the table. I found the Sam/Laura dynamic quite unsettling in season 2. I hoped with them sitting on opposite sides of the table, it would be less cringeworthy in season 3.
@@steves7271 yes, you're missing the whole point. "The only man I ever loved" is a joke line from Sam's Nordverse ads before the games. Travis is fine with it because it's humour, and if he weren't, these people are mature enough to talk it through. It wouldn't have been made a running joke if it was a problem. As for the dynamic between Sam and Laura in campaign 2, what exactly was wrong with it? Because I can't think of anything. Calling it both "unsettling" and "cringeworthy" is contradictory; either it's real and problematic for you or it's an act that's not landing for you. Seems like you're just finding random words to criticise an imaginary issue.

Percy's entire motivation was the tragedy that struck his family, Caduceus' whole arc was to be able to walk his own path apart from his parents and siblings and clearly, Ashton has a lot of bagage when it comes to their found family. Molly was close to the circus, but it wasn't his motivation for anything and his story didn't revolve around its relation to them, it was just a context for his awakening. Apart from loners, the people they were surrounded with will always be a big deal for most characters. I could also sa that family was the most important thing for Vax and Vex (rejected by their father), Pike and Grog (found one another when their family was shitty), Keyketh (herited her mother's burden as the leader of her clan), Scanlan (motivated by the death of his mother and seeking to be a better father for his own daughter), Taryon (desperate for his father's love), Caleb (wrecked by the loss of his own parents by his hands), Jester (extremely close to her mother and longing for a father), Beau (rejected by her father for not conforming), Fjord (orphaned at birth and looking for a family his entire life), Veth (trying to become herself again so she could rejoin her husband and child) and Yasha (outcast from her own clan). It's easy to make a big deal out of relationship since it's what drives most characters, and I'm not saying you're wrong, family is certainly an important theme for Taliesin, I'm just saying you're grasping at straws when it comes to Molly.
@@bdletoast09 I rewached first half of C2 recently and the way Mollymauk interacted with the group from the wery beggining to the wery end convinces me that there wos more to it under the surface. There just wasn't enough time tu unpack all of it before shit went off the rail.
I totally believe that Pretty is just an honest chef who does his best while also being a connoisseur of fine arts. Yet, because he works in such a backwards establishment, he has to rely on his more ogre presumptions to get his way, but when he has no one around to judge him, he can be more himself. They had private seats, so he would be more critical on the show. Outside, he just had the 3 girls who he now actually found a fondness for and was being more in-line. It was cheesy, but I love it

The trio of Laundna, Fearne and Imogen is so great because of how well they compliment each other. Imogen is the perfect straight foil to Fearne and Laudna's chaos and quirkiness.

Probably my favorite team dynamic is the fact that everyone plays along with Laudna's spooky whispers. It's such a fun and supportive thing for them to help make her character what it is, like they all agreed at the beginning that it would be a good idea and they keep doing it. More players that help each other's characters be special please
Things this episode that worry me: 1. Orym saying he won't live up to 200 years old 2. Dorian saying he would rather leave than endanger his friends because of his brother
Halflings only have a lifespan of about 150 according to the PHB, so I wouldn't worry about the Orym one so much as it's basically the equivalent of a human saying that they won't live past 110 or so. :)

Campaign 1 was an epic scale shakespearean tragedy. Campaign 2 was a character piece with overtones of body horror. Campaign 3 so far feels like the best horror dramedy I've ever seen. Matt's creatures (and laudna) are so consistently terrifying in concept and execution this Campaign its genuinely incredible

Every single week, Robbie’s roleplaying as Dorian floors me. Sure, he’s charming, awkward, funny- all that is endearing, but just as in EXU, it’s the depth of bad emotional decision-making that pulls me in to the character. For instance, the worries and aggravation about his brother’s plight causing him to pre-plan self-isolating and taking the task of clearing Cyrus’s name on his own (which is neither wise nor efficient), likely just so he can have (or attempt to have) sole control over the situation and not have anyone else in the way to worry him... it’s a really great portrayal of someone who is lowkey destructive in their anxiety, lack of healthy self-esteem, and poor stress management skills. (See: “let’s do crime, f*ck it!”, as well as the interaction with Artana, reuniting with Cyrus, Bertrand’s demise, etc.) Dorian is very smart, but no smarter than his very volatile emotions will allow. As does everyone at the table, Robbie knows what he’s doing with his character, and I’m so incredibly glad that Dorian was his choice to share with all of us.
@Logan Fields I am a bit in the middle. Dorian can be whip smart with his exchanges ("jokes on you") and he can be really fun to watch but his character's incessant hesitation and almost obsequious behavior can be a bit annoying. I know it is a choice made by Robbie, just not one I always enjoy.
If Pretty would have been unaware of girls being mean that would be super sad. For them it was a joke. The joke was to give this poor guy hope for something real with zero chance of it becoming something real. However Matt is the nicest guy who will save their friends and it was what he did. (Trash instead of flowers.... c'mon!)

The NordVPN ads are brilliant. Not just because they're hilarious, but because Sam was able to cunningly create a plotline that would eventually lead to everyone else in the cast doing his ads for him.
I really love how Ashley is so into her character, when Pretty explains to the girls this will go nowhere. Marisha and Laura are just loosing it, but Ashley seem shocked and really bewildered to be let down by her date. Those moments are one of the reasons I love this crew !
Lmao yeah I loved watching her face, I rewound as soon as I figured out what he was doing, watched *her* figure it out, decide how Fearne would feel and display it. I love watching Ashley act, she's freaking fantastic.

Realistically, it's just Matt having some fun with a stereotyped character, but in the context of the game, I think Pretty just feels like he can't be himself around everyone. His appreciation for art shows with his love for cooking, and he can't be that same sophisticated patron in a tavern where he used to be a bouncer.
I was only listening at points and couldn't catch what she actually said. Podcast would be terrible for that. I love it, don't get me wrong, but whispers carry through those mics 😆
@@Adanu191 Tip: You can enable subtitles on almost all Critical role episodes, which I consider to be an extremely generous act on part of CR. It allows me to hear things I normally wouldn't hear, so to me the whispers in the background are actually not a nuisance, but rather a great means of immersion.
Chetney & Dorian’s interactions are absolutely killing me, their friendship has been on such a wild ride in such a short amount of time. Travis being an absolute troll ‘do you have some trauma about leaving somebody behind?’ Sam’s little chuckle was golden. Underrated moment is the way Ashton says “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” when Chetney starts randomly explaining how to break in. I laughed so unexpectedly hard.
Man, I just love Pretty. He was so honest about how he felt about their relationship, and left the best way possible, making it clear that it wasn't their fault, but rather the fact that they simply don't fit together. I wish him the best and hope he has a happy future.
It is, but it's also a great general rejoinder to the Just World fallacy. Wouldn't be terribly surprised if that one is a Taliesin line as well as an Ashton one. Goes well with e.g. "I don't believe in hope... Hope is a sin." (From a D&D Beyond interview)
While its a great line, my conflict with Ashton is I honestly don't see much separation from him and Molly. I mean, can you honestly say you wouldn't see Molly deliver that line? Honestly, I still lean to Caduceus being his best 'character' from the critical roll campaigns if only because he had to play him counter from how his personality is. Molly, Ashton, and to some degree Percy all feel too close to him just playing himself in a fantasy setting. I get the counter point that there isn't anything wrong with that, but it disappoints me when I believe he has much more range and can make some very fascinating characters if he could just break away from his go to type.
@@grumdiddlydoo3559 I get that. There are definitely some large overlaps between Kayden (Dread), Carver (L.A. By Night), Mollymauk and Ashton. OTOH: So much of my personal investment of this is dependent on the players' visible and obvious enjoyment. To that end, I really just want them to play characters THEY feel like playing. Designing their PCs any other way I feel would be a short path to either burnout or CR becoming a very different animal.

@@grumdiddlydoo3559 to be fair he didn't really get to play Molly though an actual arc. Due to an irritable Oni. In that position as a player id want to give that character flavor a revisit, because its not about who you start as but who you grow into. Characters with very similar outlooks can become dramatically different people. Taliesin is literally the Executive Goth. And comes from a big and close knit family. So he has a deeper connection to that. It can be very difficult to be a character that has such contrasting core views of life. And it can be more fun to explore facets within the vein of your interest than trying to mock up a character whos core principles are something you have a hard time grasping enough to emulate. Its why I have a harder time playing paladins and clerics for example, the classes imply a level of devotion and fervour Ive simply never found in faith. 5e paladins being more oath oriented than faith based helps. But I would not likely play a paladin for a three year campaign, a one shot or two to see how i do? Sure, but comitting to a character for three years is harsh, and if its not something you find much joy in, it will diminish your experience, and that in turn will show on the video. The way I see it is Taliesin has slowly been expanding his boundaries in CR. Started with a character whos family was the entirety of that characters place in the world. Moved to one who had a chosen family, Which dissolved and left him latching onto a new family because he had nowhere else to go and was afraid of being on his own. (as confirmed in a talks episode) Then a character whos family was important but whos duty compelled him stay while they all left. Until eventually he had to go as well. Cad never sought carving out a life beyond his family. His entire journey was about making home something that he could return to. It was only after already having travelled so far and seen so much and caring for the group that he was reluctant to close that chapter. Now hes a character whos adoptive family left him, and hes been making his own way solo for years, and now finally getting back into having people around him.
Well, I like Ashley a lot….but how she is playing the character is too dumm. The Charakter should never survive any situation with her mindset. Don’t Unterstanding the concept of stealing is bad. Just to braindeath….and bc of the dumm Situations 2 Charakters are putting the group through…..the story is getting no where Like the date with the troll….pointlesss and cruel!

I was mad for a minute because they forgot to do it, and I instantly thought “Damn it! Are they really going to let that bit die?!” I heaved a sigh of relief when they did it moments later 😅
Just want to say that I love that Pretty went from the big dumb cook, to this oddly well cultured recluse. And 100% Matt didnt have any plans for this character past the kitchen.
I don't remember, did Matt make these sending stone work differently than the RAW ones? cuz the ones in the books just cast the sending spell to the other stone regardless of who has them.
I’m so impressed with Matt Mercer having created Pretry in the moment and having an entire backstory for this npc he was expecting the party to blow off
He created it during the week m8,but still excellent to create a character from scratch in such a short time frame meanwhile making sure the narrative isn't neglected overall
@@mel2998 I think the difference is that SHE is actually having fun with Laudna It felt like her other characters were characters she was interested in playing, but they didn't let her relax as much. Laudna seems like someone she REALLY LOVES playing
Yup, first 2 characters were well played, but grating at points (much less with Beau than Kyleth) and laid a is just *chefs kiss*. This campaign really has some killer PCs competing for number 1 in my heart.
Absolutely loving all the characters this campaign too. Ashley playing Fearne seems like she's really exploring a character unlike she's ever done before and it's SO chaotically BEAUTIFUL

Oh my god yes. I have a player who started playing with us a little over a year ago and I can say I absolutely love having someone that *really* listens to and is invested in the world and story that I’m building for everyone. It’s made me a MUCH better DM and made the group better players It’s crazy how one person can elevate a game to such a degree.
During those certain moments of info and lore, my fellow players tend to say to me, "are you getting this?" I love being notetaker, even better when I can play a character like that
This is like an episode of Scooby-Doo when the villain comes up with a convoluted plan to scare people away from a location with a haunted ghost story/creepy monster so they can break in and steal something.
We just need to see them all get caught and accused of creating ghosts for their break in, and then Chetney complain that they would have gotten away with it, too. 🤣
I absolutely love that they've managed to create a massive ghost story/suspicion for that whole district in one night. There's gonna be a mass exodus of guards and employees in the coming days. Also super stoked for the Nightmare King!!!

Dorian is such an interesting take on an air genassi! They're usually portrait as arrogant and high and mighty and whilst Dorian is charming and classy he's also clumsy and awkward. I absolutely love they way Robbie went with him

I was sad when there weren't creepy whispers during Laudna's first message. I thought maybe they weren't going to do it anymore. Then they did it for the second one and I couldn't be more pleased.
At first I was confused when they did, because I thought she had a telepathy feature that caused the strange echoes, then I went and rewatched past episodes and realized I misheard her first use of the spell.
If there's 2 things I love they would be running jokes and Travis hating "scary" stuff. It really makes me giggle like a child.

Am I missing something with this? I cringed so bad when she said that. Travis' eyes went straight to the table. I found the Sam/Laura dynamic quite unsettling in season 2. I hoped with them sitting on opposite sides of the table, it would be less cringeworthy in season 3.
@@steves7271 yes, you're missing the whole point. "The only man I ever loved" is a joke line from Sam's Nordverse ads before the games. Travis is fine with it because it's humour, and if he weren't, these people are mature enough to talk it through. It wouldn't have been made a running joke if it was a problem.
As for the dynamic between Sam and Laura in campaign 2, what exactly was wrong with it? Because I can't think of anything. Calling it both "unsettling" and "cringeworthy" is contradictory; either it's real and problematic for you or it's an act that's not landing for you. Seems like you're just finding random words to criticise an imaginary issue.

Percy's entire motivation was the tragedy that struck his family, Caduceus' whole arc was to be able to walk his own path apart from his parents and siblings and clearly, Ashton has a lot of bagage when it comes to their found family. Molly was close to the circus, but it wasn't his motivation for anything and his story didn't revolve around its relation to them, it was just a context for his awakening. Apart from loners, the people they were surrounded with will always be a big deal for most characters. I could also sa that family was the most important thing for Vax and Vex (rejected by their father), Pike and Grog (found one another when their family was shitty), Keyketh (herited her mother's burden as the leader of her clan), Scanlan (motivated by the death of his mother and seeking to be a better father for his own daughter), Taryon (desperate for his father's love), Caleb (wrecked by the loss of his own parents by his hands), Jester (extremely close to her mother and longing for a father), Beau (rejected by her father for not conforming), Fjord (orphaned at birth and looking for a family his entire life), Veth (trying to become herself again so she could rejoin her husband and child) and Yasha (outcast from her own clan). It's easy to make a big deal out of relationship since it's what drives most characters, and I'm not saying you're wrong, family is certainly an important theme for Taliesin, I'm just saying you're grasping at straws when it comes to Molly.

I totally believe that Pretty is just an honest chef who does his best while also being a connoisseur of fine arts. Yet, because he works in such a backwards establishment, he has to rely on his more ogre presumptions to get his way, but when he has no one around to judge him, he can be more himself. They had private seats, so he would be more critical on the show. Outside, he just had the 3 girls who he now actually found a fondness for and was being more in-line. It was cheesy, but I love it

The trio of Laundna, Fearne and Imogen is so great because of how well they compliment each other. Imogen is the perfect straight foil to Fearne and Laudna's chaos and quirkiness.

Probably my favorite team dynamic is the fact that everyone plays along with Laudna's spooky whispers. It's such a fun and supportive thing for them to help make her character what it is, like they all agreed at the beginning that it would be a good idea and they keep doing it. More players that help each other's characters be special please
Things this episode that worry me:
1. Orym saying he won't live up to 200 years old
2. Dorian saying he would rather leave than endanger his friends because of his brother
Halflings only have a lifespan of about 150 according to the PHB, so I wouldn't worry about the Orym one so much as it's basically the equivalent of a human saying that they won't live past 110 or so. :)

Campaign 2 was a character piece with overtones of body horror.

Every single week, Robbie’s roleplaying as Dorian floors me. Sure, he’s charming, awkward, funny- all that is endearing, but just as in EXU, it’s the depth of bad emotional decision-making that pulls me in to the character. For instance, the worries and aggravation about his brother’s plight causing him to pre-plan self-isolating and taking the task of clearing Cyrus’s name on his own (which is neither wise nor efficient), likely just so he can have (or attempt to have) sole control over the situation and not have anyone else in the way to worry him... it’s a really great portrayal of someone who is lowkey destructive in their anxiety, lack of healthy self-esteem, and poor stress management skills. (See: “let’s do crime, f*ck it!”, as well as the interaction with Artana, reuniting with Cyrus, Bertrand’s demise, etc.) Dorian is very smart, but no smarter than his very volatile emotions will allow. As does everyone at the table, Robbie knows what he’s doing with his character, and I’m so incredibly glad that Dorian was his choice to share with all of us.
So glad you're enjoying him, but I've had a different feel. I've found Dorian lacks conviction, and is really a bit bland. Just me?

@Logan Fields I am a bit in the middle. Dorian can be whip smart with his exchanges ("jokes on you") and he can be really fun to watch but his character's incessant hesitation and almost obsequious behavior can be a bit annoying. I know it is a choice made by Robbie, just not one I always enjoy.

I really love how Ashley is so into her character, when Pretty explains to the girls this will go nowhere. Marisha and Laura are just loosing it, but Ashley seem shocked and really bewildered to be let down by her date. Those moments are one of the reasons I love this crew !

Realistically, it's just Matt having some fun with a stereotyped character, but in the context of the game, I think Pretty just feels like he can't be himself around everyone. His appreciation for art shows with his love for cooking, and he can't be that same sophisticated patron in a tavern where he used to be a bouncer.
I feel like chetney’s casual fear of Imogene is very reflective of Travis’ casual fear of pissing Laura off.

I find the whispers to be incredibly annoying. It's the low point of the campaign so far.
@@Adanu191 Tip: You can enable subtitles on almost all Critical role episodes, which I consider to be an extremely generous act on part of CR. It allows me to hear things I normally wouldn't hear, so to me the whispers in the background are actually not a nuisance, but rather a great means of immersion.

It is, but it's also a great general rejoinder to the Just World fallacy.
Wouldn't be terribly surprised if that one is a Taliesin line as well as an Ashton one. Goes well with e.g. "I don't believe in hope... Hope is a sin." (From a D&D Beyond interview)
While its a great line, my conflict with Ashton is I honestly don't see much separation from him and Molly.
I mean, can you honestly say you wouldn't see Molly deliver that line?
Honestly, I still lean to Caduceus being his best 'character' from the critical roll campaigns if only because he had to play him counter from how his personality is. Molly, Ashton, and to some degree Percy all feel too close to him just playing himself in a fantasy setting.
I get the counter point that there isn't anything wrong with that, but it disappoints me when I believe he has much more range and can make some very fascinating characters if he could just break away from his go to type.
@@grumdiddlydoo3559 I get that. There are definitely some large overlaps between Kayden (Dread), Carver (L.A. By Night), Mollymauk and Ashton.
OTOH: So much of my personal investment of this is dependent on the players' visible and obvious enjoyment. To that end, I really just want them to play characters THEY feel like playing. Designing their PCs any other way I feel would be a short path to either burnout or CR becoming a very different animal.

@@grumdiddlydoo3559 to be fair he didn't really get to play Molly though an actual arc. Due to an irritable Oni. In that position as a player id want to give that character flavor a revisit, because its not about who you start as but who you grow into. Characters with very similar outlooks can become dramatically different people.
Taliesin is literally the Executive Goth. And comes from a big and close knit family. So he has a deeper connection to that. It can be very difficult to be a character that has such contrasting core views of life. And it can be more fun to explore facets within the vein of your interest than trying to mock up a character whos core principles are something you have a hard time grasping enough to emulate.
Its why I have a harder time playing paladins and clerics for example, the classes imply a level of devotion and fervour Ive simply never found in faith. 5e paladins being more oath oriented than faith based helps. But I would not likely play a paladin for a three year campaign, a one shot or two to see how i do? Sure, but comitting to a character for three years is harsh, and if its not something you find much joy in, it will diminish your experience, and that in turn will show on the video.
The way I see it is Taliesin has slowly been expanding his boundaries in CR. Started with a character whos family was the entirety of that characters place in the world.
Moved to one who had a chosen family, Which dissolved and left him latching onto a new family because he had nowhere else to go and was afraid of being on his own. (as confirmed in a talks episode)
Then a character whos family was important but whos duty compelled him stay while they all left. Until eventually he had to go as well. Cad never sought carving out a life beyond his family. His entire journey was about making home something that he could return to. It was only after already having travelled so far and seen so much and caring for the group that he was reluctant to close that chapter.
Now hes a character whos adoptive family left him, and hes been making his own way solo for years, and now finally getting back into having people around him.
Pretty is the best NPC ever!

I’m so impressed with Matt Mercer having created Pretry in the moment and having an entire backstory for this npc he was expecting the party to blow off
He had time to flesh it out since the previous episode.
He created it during the week m8,but still excellent to create a character from scratch in such a short time frame meanwhile making sure the narrative isn't neglected overall

Yup, first 2 characters were well played, but grating at points (much less with Beau than Kyleth) and laid a is just *chefs kiss*.
This campaign really has some killer PCs competing for number 1 in my heart.
I feel like she is really living her best life with laudna. You can tell she is having a blast.

Travis fumbling through what they learned at the end of the last session brings me endless joy. Really everything so far (only as far as I've made it) the first 35 min is absolutely hilarious.

Oh my god yes. I have a player who started playing with us a little over a year ago and I can say I absolutely love having someone that *really* listens to and is invested in the world and story that I’m building for everyone. It’s made me a MUCH better DM and made the group better players It’s crazy how one person can elevate a game to such a degree.
During those certain moments of info and lore, my fellow players tend to say to me, "are you getting this?" I love being notetaker, even better when I can play a character like that
When Marisha read out her notes for the conversation Chetney heard and it was basically word for word what Matt said 😳 impressive
