I haven't a clue about model trains but I do enjoy watching different modelling hobbies, the time and patience put in by others that I simply don't have. Can I just say you are a natural in front of the camera, friendly, concise and very watchable presenter.
Hi richard just a thought seeing the burnt grass scatter what about an area of burnt grass and bushes by the heritage line not many do that but it happens a few times here by svr
good work on the layout richard on the layout lot of work go in keep up the good work time and looks good keep up the good vids and work on layout and good see trains running thanks lee
Great work Richard, the job list never seems to reduce, even when you can visibly see progress, joy of layout building. I’ve been stuck at ballasting for 3 months, can’t muster the motivation to start it!
No no no no Richard....you can not just "take a road up", believe me I know, you need1000 cones, two way temporary lights, lots of shovels and people...I worked for the Council...I know what I'm talking about lol
I was watching each of your cement tanks as they came into the scene at approx. 10:55 to 11:30 and almost all of them did a little shudder just as they came into view, suggesting to me that there is a small track issue at that location. What I didn't expect to see, though, was a passenger on the very last tank in the train! Check it out. P.S. I've just seen other posts reporting the 'passenger', so I'm not the only one to be amused by the realistic, if a little overscale, wildlife!
Great work Richard, Nice to see some form of greenery on the layout and it does indeed make a big difference. I also noticed the overscale spider doing a Chris Pine over the cement wagons which im sure was added on purpose for Halloween;) LOL. Cheers, Michael
Looking great Richard. What a difference those first layers have made. You must be really pleased. I use cheap brown hobby craft poster paint to cover the white plaster, followed by a covering layer of dried used coffee grounds. ( I drink a lot of coffee 🤣). That gives me a dark earthy textured base layer before the mixture of greens. I look forward to your next layers going in. Regards….. Steve 👍👍
As if by magic, we have grass. Fantastic mate! After the last video, I was wondering how it was going to look. This is all new to me. Your videos are very helpful. I know where to come when I need advice. Hope see you soon, Andy 😊👍🏼
It's great to see the trains running again Rich, the scenery is really coming along nicely I can't wait to see all 4 lines running in the mainline aswell as the heritage railway
Looking great. I like the plan of putting down the ground coverage then the ballast then the green stuff on top. I still have 1 board left to add track on for my TT layout, so it's about time to mock up some bridges and plan where the scenery will go. The only issue is, I can't fully test the track until I get something other than my class 08, and the TTAs are still a way away...
Wow, what a transformation a bit of greenery makes! Good to see your layout really taking shape now, not long before it'll be on the exhibition circuit 🙂
What a difference the first layers of grass have made. It's made huge visual progress in one episode. Good of you to acknowledge the gremlins that lurk within every point & board joint, just waiting to trip up each new set of loco & wagons that ventures on to the track for the first time! Really looking forward to see how you layer up the scenery, as I am at a similar stage the my own new layout.
Nicely done, the expected excellence and beautiful trains in motion. With all that has gone on the last couple years, this is truly impressive to be here.
Hi Richard, your layout looks terrific and demonstrates how adding scenic materials really makes it pop. Great advice on the application and mix of grass. As I told you before I love the multiple lines with trains running, appearing and disappearing . Next time I get over I would love to visit. best regards Charlie
I think that the effect you have achieved thus far is a great base for the finer detail to be added later, Richard. And good on you for pointing out how simple application of layering improves the look of a landscape. The sun bleaching of grass and the yellowing of patches when there is a prolonged dry spell are often overlooked I think, as is the subtle tonal difference around hedgerows and river sides 🤔 Look forward to the next instalment mate 😎👍🍻🍀
Wow, really coming along nicely. My favourite part of building a layout is the scenery. Love the 4 track Mainline. The cement wagons look ace I have the same ones and a Hattons 66 (soon to have an EWS Accurascale to join it 👍) all looks great 👍
Nice video Richard. Good to see trains running on the main line. The base layer of scenery looks great. I also like the idea of adding a bit of brown paint to the glue mix to hide the glossy finish. May have to give that a go myself. - Nicholas.
Coming on really well so wish I had that kind of space for my layout would like some long straights. Anyway thanks leaning a lot of you and your videos cheers
Ahh, 7812 Erlestoke Manor, a locomotive im very familiar with, I've even been on her footplate! I might have to get a model of her myself, great video and hope you are well! :)
11:26 That's a good looking rake. And it even has a passenger (ant or small spider or something) on last wagon I thought it was something on my monitor screen at first :)
Absolutely awesome Richard, that green is Gold, makes such a huge difference. I'd be as pleased as punch and feeling quite smug. You have rounded my Saturday off after a stressful shift at work. Thank you again for your updates, soon be time to take a booking to show NJ at an exhibition as a WIP layout!! Hopefully catch you at Warley again if you are in attendance this year
Inspirational as ever for me new to the hobby. I thought my modelling skills from flying RC planes and helicopters would come in handy but it seems I have new skills to learn which is great and what modelling is all about. I have drawn my layout up now and begun making the base board the colouring and shading I have done on the design and your video has once again given me food for thought. Cant weight for the next episode.
Lovely work Richard ,it’s going to look great what catenary you going for ,full wires or just the masts like Dave at dean park ,all the best mate Mark 😊😊
Great update mate. Amazing what a small bit of scatter can do, starting to take shape now, you having cars moving around on them roads? Bus chasing trains 😂
Brilliant update, mate. It looks awesome. What a bit of a colour does for a layout. Your station Richard, that phil done for you from making tracks has he got a site and does he lasercut for public modellers like myself.
Richard great progress and it’s looking good. Could I ask a question about the chips in the mk5 coaches and class 68 assuming you have both chipped. Do you have them on different numbers and run a consist or are they set to the same number. How do you avoid function clashes? Thanks
Hi. Really enjoyed your video. Near the beginning I saw what looked like a sound module. My layout is dc and I was thinking about getting the rural sound one. Are they good? Many thanks.also do you have any clips on previous videos?
When you do the scenics and scatter by pouring the WS soils on… how do you clean up the layout after? Do you collect any of the lose material some how?
What this missus doesn’t know I can’t get wrong for I suppose, I’ve been putting off the greenary scenics for too long and starting to seriously get round to it and daft little things like that are still beyond my thinking at the moment
Rich, looking great, one observation, do you think the left hand tunnel portal would look better if it had the same upper section across the top as the right hand one?
Yes, however... its a carbon copy of the real tunnel portals at Hadley Wood and Potters bar. One bore was done years before the other hence the design change.
@@marksinthehouse1968 the plan is to replace the engine in 2 of the locomotives and also replace and expand the fuel tanks. The main problem with the locomotives are they using way too much fuel and the fuel tanks are too small. The MK5 coaches are more of an issue… 3 coaches are listed to go to the scrap yard already due to cracking of the body frame. They are trying to rent out the rest of the coaches but no one touching them with a barge pole due to their design issues and the thinking all of them will be in a scrap yard very soon. Both the MK5 coaches and 68 have both not been officially delivered and signed off as commissioned due to there age and issues.
Has anybody ever developed soft concertina walkways with magnets to join one coach to the next to make them look more realistic instead of that massive gap?

11:26. The fly is a nice touch but not to scale!. Looking great keep up the good work and updates. Take care. Maz. HILLSHOT TRAIN LAYOUT
Really enjoyed this. Congratulations on reaching a near fully operational stage!
Love the Journey Richard! Don't know if you noticed but at 11:30 there is a spider crawling over the last Castle Cement wagon.
Hi richard just a thought seeing the burnt grass scatter what about an area of burnt grass and bushes by the heritage line not many do that but it happens a few times here by svr
That’s a really nice idea, if it’s ok I might borrow that for the heritage line on Donnington Castle!
So glad i found this channel, i never have, nor will make mini railways, but its incredibly relaxing watching you craft away
It's amazing how even the basic bits of scenery help a layout to come alive. Good job and nicely done Richard. Regards. Mark.
Love it! What a difference that’s made!
I think so too!
Great progress Richard, I'm at about the same stage with Amberlea, the start of some scenery makes such a difference.... Chris

Hi Richard, great to see the progress that you making on your new layout, Looking forward to further episodes. Cheers Greg
Looking fantastic, must be good to see trains running on the mainline!
Yes, I'm trying to get the rest working well enough to film aha
Great progress 👏, the scatter makes a massive difference bringing it all together.
Really impressive, the split levels are great
I'm quite please 😅
Excellent work Richard, I’ll certainly take these tips to my layout, great video as usual

Nice work Richard. Personally I think basic groundwork before ballasting is the right way to go - after all that's how it happens in the real world
the layout looks better and better each time i see it keep it up
Great update mate. Amazing what a small bit of scatter can do, starting to take shape now, you having cars moving around on them roads? Bus chasing trains 😂

great video
Surprised you didn't want to christen the layout with a HST Richard!
Great layout update! :D Im just gonna ask: I can see in 15:32 that you use tight curves, they are problematic or not?
Great update, adding some ground cover has made a huge difference to that part of the layout. A very nice looking class 66 running on your layout?
Coming along nicely. It must be gratifying to be able to run several of your trains at once again.
Yes, been a long time coming
That's awesome
Thanks!
Richard great progress and it’s looking good. Could I ask a question about the chips in the mk5 coaches and class 68 assuming you have both chipped. Do you have them on different numbers and run a consist or are they set to the same number. How do you avoid function clashes? Thanks
Great layout Richard, love watching the updates just one question , aren't the train's on the main line going wrong way round?
No, being East coast mainline they go Up slow, Up fast, Down fast, Down slow.
Hi. Really enjoyed your video. Near the beginning I saw what looked like a sound module. My layout is dc and I was thinking about getting the rural sound one. Are they good? Many thanks.also do you have any clips on previous videos?

Where did you get the platforms, they look custom made to be the right size between your tracks?
When you do the scenics and scatter by pouring the WS soils on… how do you clean up the layout after? Do you collect any of the lose material some how?
You can use a hoover with some tights over the end to collect the bits, should you wish to save them.
What this missus doesn’t know I can’t get wrong for I suppose, I’ve been putting off the greenary scenics for too long and starting to seriously get round to it and daft little things like that are still beyond my thinking at the moment

@@NewJunction yes thought you would have had a reason Richard
Wonder how much this person will charge to fix/build my layout?
You done an amazing job
Any updates on the garden layout?
Might of missed, but your platforms, who manufacturers them. Laser cut? Cheers Andrew

Come a few weeks time the class 68 and MK5 coaches will be no more!
Only with Transpennine. They’ll be moving on to either Scotrail to replace the HSTs or to Chiltern to replace their Mk3s.
Unbelievable ,they so good ,I wonder who will have them ,superb futuristic livery too crazy innit 😢
@@marksinthehouse1968 the plan is to replace the engine in 2 of the locomotives and also replace and expand the fuel tanks.

I should! 😆
Has anybody ever developed soft concertina walkways with magnets to join one coach to the next to make them look more realistic instead of that massive gap?
I believe yes!
Just can't remember where or by who 😅
Does anyone know what the locomotive pulling the grey carriages is called?
In the video we have a Class 37, Class 68, Class 66 & Manor steam locomotive.
