    The way this video moves forward with the music, without any irrelevant garbage, is almost trippy. I'm vibing.
    Especially at 2:37, the juxtaposed faces are inducing me kind of trance.😂 The look on your face is golden, it's like telling me "here it is, the video comparision between these cameras. Nothing more, nothing less."
    Damn i sound crazy tho...

    Thanks Mathieu!!! I think most people came here for the same answer: "Should i upgrade to GX9 from GX85?" and, for me, the answer is no... not with the GX9 at this price point. BUT it is a little better indeed, specially DR and AF. But this 4k crop... bahhhh

  • @mpwheatley
    @mpwheatley 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    That the GX9 has a 1.26 crop for 4k video compared to the 1.1 crop on the GX85 is a deal breaker and I was so close to upgrading my GX85. That turns a 24mm equiv lens into a 30mm. No thanks!

    Mathieu and Heather - Thanks for this painstaking comparison. Your efforts are appreciated. Although the GX9 appears to have better contrast than the GX85, the two cameras are virtually identical in every aspect that I'm concerned with. Your video convinces me that I should stick with my GX85.

    Thanks for comparison.. This is the best comparison between GX85 vs GX9 I have seen..
    GX9 is superior in every where: more natural color (glass and sky), more pleasing skin tone, more detail in picture, more DR, and VDO AF..
    1.1 vs 1.26 crop views seem very similar to me, just half footstep difference (unlike 1.7 of Canon)..
    Again, thanks for great review (as always)..

      That's weird, because I have to say that I generally prefer the gx85. It has a brighter, easier to see imagine that is more impressive. I feel like these two cameras is like picking between a Pioneer plasma tv or Sony LCD TV in 2009. Gx9 would be the plasma. Someone in the comments mentioned the gx9 got updates.......if that is true, they surely could have updated the gx8 too. Right now in Feb. of 2021, you can get the GX85 with a 26-45 lens and a 45 -150mm lens for $600 and a 64 gig memory card and cleaning kit and travel bag or you can get the GX9 for $700 with a 26-60mm lens, travel bag, and 64gig card.... the gx85 brought me to want this camera because I really love some video shot with it on youtube, and it is smaller and I am not so sure that the gx9 would have done the same, but I can see that internally, gx9 is a better camera. It is a tough decision. I do like real, and I picked that LCD, but I always realized I made the wrong decision.

    • @wellnesspathforme6236
      @wellnesspathforme6236 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HollywoodCreeper I think these cameras are very close. Take 5 images each, mix them up, and I bet even the most discriminating observer would have a hard time distinguishing between the two as long as there were no consistent differences (say, one camera's pictures always darker, and even then, some would guess the wrong camera produced the dark output!). Autofocus are two exceptions -- the GX9 kick behind in that department. The GX85 seemed to kick behind in IBIS, though. The GX85 can produce amazing video in the right hands... I assume the G9 can as well, but I hope the IBIS in the GX9 is at least as good as the GX85.

      "I've said it before and I'll say it again, the future of documentary storytelling lies in the technology of IN-BODY STABILIZATION (IBIS). Above dynamic range, iso performance, global shutter, raw, high bitrate, and motorized gimbals. The importance of keeping the storyteller light, nimble and ninja-like trumps any other feature a film making manufacturer could create."

    I had the GX85 and changed to the GX9. I have processed several thousand photographs in Lightroom from both models and definitely prefer the GX9. The main reason is the increase from 16 to 20 mp images which are cleaner with the GX9, particularly if I need to crop the image. There are just more pixels to work with. I don’t use video so that is not an issue for me. The GX9 is my main travel camera with the 12 to 32 lens, the 35 to 100 and the superb 15mm f1.7 leica/lumix lens. I no longer travel with my Canon 5D iii.

I bought my GX85 brandnew with the kitlens for 450€ quit..if the price for the GX9 drops down on the same price, ill just grab it. But now i stuck with the GX85, and i`m happy with it.

    GX9 is a bit better in terms of IQ, but it's not worth the asking price. Not by a long shot. It's really a GX90, rather than a GX9. No weather sealing, to start. I'm very happy with my GX85 and don't lust after the GX9 at all, I must admit. I was able to deploy Cinelike-D using an exploit and I'm very happy shooting both pictures and video with it. I've been using it professionally since I got it at launch and don't regret it. Best bang for the buck, I think. At the very least, it's the camera that best suits my needs.
    I do wish Olympus would release an EM-5 III with dual card slots and 4K video. If they do that, I'm sold.

And why no Dual IS2? ..I went throught the comparison between GX9 and LX100 already before, and went to G9. Now I am back again thinking of 2nd camera. Having LX100 already but more lenses, the question is shall I trade the LX for GX? Not sure. Why the crop? And why 4k 30p only? Hm. Decisions, decisions.

      The people who bought a cheap camera would not have the money to buy external audio recorders, otherwise they would have bought the more expensive camera solution. A mic input doesn't cost Panasonic more than $1, but it saves youtubers' a lot, and adds value to their offering. Particularly since the GX85's mics are among the worse out there!

    Gx9 flatters skin tones more. GX85 has more facial details. On landscapes GX85 is clearly sharper by a long way, but the GX9 has fewer blown highlights among the clouds. On the GX85 once you've got focus on a face, use continuous focus (not face recognition) and it will stay in focus much better. GX85 wins overall for me.
