Thank you, this worked for me, super easy to follow the video. The only additional step I had to do was to delete and reinstall Elementor as I was getting 404 errors on anything other than the homepage, but once I reinstalled Elementor all worked perfectly, and also solved an issue I had been having with WooCommerce, so happy days!

Great tutorial. I would add a suggestion to download a backup of your wp-content folder and wp-config file to a separate folder before deleting anything. What if you accidentally delete the wrong files? Whoopsie.

@@WPressDoctor Thank you again. I have a question. I just ran wordfence and it found bunch of malware in the wp-includes folder. Can I delete that folder and replace it with a wordpress clean folder. Or do I have to delete everything but wp-content and wp-config and reinstall everything else. If you could let me know I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you agian. :-)

I reached the point where I had to delete my old .php files in FileZilla, but depending on which fle i'm trying to delete, it either says my 'permission is denied' or 'file not found'. Hi Joshua! Thanks for your kind words and the question. Well if the permission is denied, you can try to delete it via your hosting file manager. Make sure to also reset FTP and SFTP passwords… sounds like they got into that…

@@WPressDoctor Thank you very much for your question! Actually, there is one file that the "Malcure Malware" plugin thinks is still severely corrupted: /it-api.php in the root folder. I googled a lot, but couldn't find anything about it. I deleted the file, but it kept coming back. The file seems to be made by Installatron and it contains just one very long line of actual code. For now, I'm thinking there could be an error in their search algorythm or it just keeps saying this to sell their cleaning up service. Would you have an idea about this file? Thank you very much and have a great day! PS: you have a new subscriber :)

Hello sir, your videos have been helpful. My hosting company gave me a backup file of all the websites on my cpanel and then regenerated a fresh one. now I have all the files offline and I have removed the virus just as your pointed out, I even saw Webshell and 7 others. All is done now but I have issues uploading all my files back from offline to online at my newly generated cpanel. I would love it if you can do a video on how to clean a hacked website offline using the backup files and then re-upload back online on a fresh cpanel.

Hi Matt, I did try that but I still had error messages trying to delete it from there too. I've since got someone to help me clean it all out and it's working again. But now I'm so paranoid about security, I'm trying to layer it with everything I can think of for protection 😅 Anyway, I hope you enjoy the rest of your travels. You found it! Wel done 😀👍🏻 Yes I always delete WordFence and go with iThemes after that 👍🏻 co-exist… I don’t know how that would work, never tried it because they have very similar functionality.

This happened to me. I already found the fake users in the database and removed them. I'll work through making the backups and installing clean wordpress. Three different sites ive gotta take care of. Luckily two of them i dont use much so it wont be an issue when i delete all the files if i d9nt get it running quickly. I'll come back and update on the progress. Im also going to watch the recent video for 2024 on securing. Ive been meaning to hide the admin page but haven't had the chance to do it. I suspect it was probably a plugin i hadnt updated...anyway more later.
@WPressDoctor unfortunately I don't think so. The oldest backup is from the beginning of May. And thinking about it I think this goes back further than I originally thought. I started noticing the custom php I have for displaying info on live streams wasn't working. I found the htaccess file and thought the changes were done by a plugin, some of the files listed were what I thought were wordpress files,so I added my file to that, and it worked for a while. This was in April I think. It worked for a while then the last day or two it wasn't. I looked at the htaccess file again and saw some that weren't in my wordpress anywhere, started doing the research, found what was really going on then found your videos. I'm working on copying everything now, which who knows how long that's going to take haha. I've been meaning tonstay more on top of updates, and clean out things I'm not using any more, unfortunately this is going to push me to do that, but it's "great" experience and it'll be much stronger after I'm done and get that one plugin going that you mentioned.
While I'm waiting for file transfers I checked the database again and there weren't any new users recreated since I deleted them last night. But I'll check again after I get it all back to normal. Another interesting thing to add, there were some error log files. One was rather large. I forget what the errors were but the first part of each line was a data and time, with a location. Asia/pacific I believe. I want to say the errors were filled login attempts. I'm pretty sure I had/have the limit login plugin activated. Once I get everything wiped I may leave it that way for an hour or so and see if anything comes back. I did come across something suggesting there could be an active php file in a loop that replaces the files. The suggestion was to create a file with the same name in the htaccess allowed list. That php file would kill all running php processes. In theory stopping the replication, if it exists. Unfortunately I don't have terminal access to the server otherwise I could easily find out or even shut down the webserver.
Great video! Saved for future use, although I hope that after this video I won't need do that :) I have a question. You mentioned Ithemes as a go to plugin and wordfence for scanning. I use both, would you disable wordfence and switch it on just to do the scan or keep both activated? I'd appreciate your thoughts on that :)
Hi Szymon and thanks for the kind words! I would not advice to have two plugins activated that kind of do the same things. Changes on conflict is just to high for me and when this is compromised it could be with big consequences. So after the scan I would deactivate WordFence and remove it entirely. But I might be wrong completely, just my opinion here 😀
@@WPressDoctor A developer from a company that was securing and managing my site installed those two over two years ago and so far I didn't notice any downsides. Yet still I'm wondering if it's necessary to have two. Now if I deactivated wordfence, Is it worth deleting it and the reinstalling for every scan especially that I use both on a few sites... of course I understand that any anwear will be subjective so I'm not expecting black or white should to-type answer :) thank you !!

It is working perfectly now but the Japanese links are still showing up in google. Will they disappear on their own or is there something I must do to make them disappear? Also my favicon appears incorrectly in google results, will this also come right by itself?

Hi there and thanks for the question! Well its risky because of vulnerabilities that are not being patched with new updates. So every vulnerability is a potential wide open gate for hackers… that’s why you need to update it, to keep the gates shut 😀👍🏻

Thank you, this worked for me, super easy to follow the video. The only additional step I had to do was to delete and reinstall Elementor as I was getting 404 errors on anything other than the homepage, but once I reinstalled Elementor all worked perfectly, and also solved an issue I had been having with WooCommerce, so happy days!

Great tutorial. I would add a suggestion to download a backup of your wp-content folder and wp-config file to a separate folder before deleting anything. What if you accidentally delete the wrong files? Whoopsie.

@@WPressDoctor Thank you again. I have a question. I just ran wordfence and it found bunch of malware in the wp-includes folder. Can I delete that folder and replace it with a wordpress clean folder. Or do I have to delete everything but wp-content and wp-config and reinstall everything else. If you could let me know I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you agian. :-)

I reached the point where I had to delete my old .php files in FileZilla, but depending on which fle i'm trying to delete, it either says my 'permission is denied' or 'file not found'. Hi Joshua! Thanks for your kind words and the question. Well if the permission is denied, you can try to delete it via your hosting file manager. Make sure to also reset FTP and SFTP passwords… sounds like they got into that…

@@WPressDoctor Thank you very much for your question! Actually, there is one file that the "Malcure Malware" plugin thinks is still severely corrupted: /it-api.php in the root folder. I googled a lot, but couldn't find anything about it. I deleted the file, but it kept coming back. The file seems to be made by Installatron and it contains just one very long line of actual code. For now, I'm thinking there could be an error in their search algorythm or it just keeps saying this to sell their cleaning up service. Would you have an idea about this file? Hello sir, your videos have been helpful. My hosting company gave me a backup file of all the websites on my cpanel and then regenerated a fresh one. now I have all the files offline and I have removed the virus just as your pointed out, I even saw Webshell and 7 others. All is done now but I have issues uploading all my files back from offline to online at my newly generated cpanel. I would love it if you can do a video on how to clean a hacked website offline using the backup files and then re-upload back online on a fresh cpanel.

Hi Matt, I did try that but I still had error messages trying to delete it from there too. I've since got someone to help me clean it all out and it's working again. But now I'm so paranoid about security, I'm trying to layer it with everything I can think of for protection 😅 Anyway, I hope you enjoy the rest of your travels. This happened to me. I already found the fake users in the database and removed them.
I'll work through making the backups and installing clean wordpress.
Three different sites ive gotta take care of. Luckily two of them i dont use much so it wont be an issue when i delete all the files if i d9nt get it running quickly.
I'll come back and update on the progress. Im also going to watch the recent video for 2024 on securing. Ive been meaning to hide the admin page but haven't had the chance to do it.
I suspect it was probably a plugin i hadnt updated...anyway more later.

@WPressDoctor unfortunately I don't think so. The oldest backup is from the beginning of May. And thinking about it I think this goes back further than I originally thought.
I started noticing the custom php I have for displaying info on live streams wasn't working. I found the htaccess file and thought the changes were done by a plugin, some of the files listed were what I thought were wordpress files,so I added my file to that, and it worked for a while. This was in April I think. It worked for a while then the last day or two it wasn't. I looked at the htaccess file again and saw some that weren't in my wordpress anywhere, started doing the research, found what was really going on then found your videos.
I'm working on copying everything now, which who knows how long that's going to take haha.
I've been meaning tonstay more on top of updates, and clean out things I'm not using any more, unfortunately this is going to push me to do that, but it's "great" experience and it'll be much stronger after I'm done and get that one plugin going that you mentioned.
While I'm waiting for file transfers I checked the database again and there weren't any new users recreated since I deleted them last night. But I'll check again after I get it all back to normal.
Another interesting thing to add, there were some error log files. One was rather large. I forget what the errors were but the first part of each line was a data and time, with a location. Asia/pacific I believe. I want to say the errors were filled login attempts. I'm pretty sure I had/have the limit login plugin activated.
Once I get everything wiped I may leave it that way for an hour or so and see if anything comes back. I did come across something suggesting there could be an active php file in a loop that replaces the files. The suggestion was to create a file with the same name in the htaccess allowed list. That php file would kill all running php processes. In theory stopping the replication, if it exists.
Unfortunately I don't have terminal access to the server otherwise I could easily find out or even shut down the webserver.
Great video! Saved for future use, although I hope that after this video I won't need do that :) I have a question. You mentioned Ithemes as a go to plugin and wordfence for scanning. I use both, would you disable wordfence and switch it on just to do the scan or keep both activated? I'd appreciate your thoughts on that :)
Hi Szymon and thanks for the kind words! I would not advice to have two plugins activated that kind of do the same things. Changes on conflict is just to high for me and when this is compromised it could be with big consequences. So after the scan I would deactivate WordFence and remove it entirely. But I might be wrong completely, just my opinion here 😀
@@WPressDoctor A developer from a company that was securing and managing my site installed those two over two years ago and so far I didn't notice any downsides. Yet still I'm wondering if it's necessary to have two. Now if I deactivated wordfence, Is it worth deleting it and the reinstalling for every scan especially that I use both on a few sites... of course I understand that any anwear will be subjective so I'm not expecting black or white should to-type answer :) thank you !!
Ah ok I see. Well deactivating should be enough if your planning to use it on different sites and regularly, that’s quicker then de-installing it.

Thanks for this video! How long should it take before the Japanese links disappear in google? I have cleaned my website. It is working perfectly now but the Japanese links are still showing up in google. Will they disappear on their own or is there something I must do to make them disappear? Also my favicon appears incorrectly in google results, will this also come right by itself?
Hi Devin! Well done! I'm proud of you that you cleaned your own website, excellent job. Yeah so these pages go away in next few days because it gives the crawler 404 errors all the time. Also the favicon will be restored in just a couple of days.

Hi there and thanks for the question! Well its risky because of vulnerabilities that are not being patched with new updates. So every vulnerability is a potential wide open gate for hackers… that’s why you need to update it, to keep the gates shut 😀👍🏻
