2 nights ago I finally experimented with starting with the backward chirp and already my mind is blown by the possiblities of combos. Still need to tighten up the execution of it and work on speeding up. Thanks for this vid its opening my mind to experiment with the fundamental scratch combos. For now I'm concerned about how well the combos are executed and not so much how complicated they are.
Yoshi is awesome. This guy has some real talent. He always breaks everything down over and over. I think he has moved on from scratching. Hopefully he comes back someday. Peace Yoshi
@DJUsive1 I do... but when done slow it sounds imho more crisp when done "normal" . I learned it from not looking at my hands... It´s kind of different in hamster style :)
I made these combos naturally just by practicing 2 click flares and chirps a lot. But im gonna practice the combo intentionally now as a more complicated warm up technique and backup scratch when im not feeling it
I watched this and broke it down. (Finally Understand lol it is mind boggling.) So the issue is when you see him do the flare at the beginning the 3rd sound ends with the fader open. but when he starts to instruct the 212 he starts that 3rd sound with the fader closed. (So it is a dope as Transform Chirp Combo)
when you delay or offset flare techniques (like 2 or 3 click orbits, OG & Crescent flares ) by one phrase they can become closed timing when done in sections, but the open ends can still be heard when the pattern is rocked continuously. The boomerang scratch is another great example, I remember the q bert instructional teaching the open timing phrasing and most of the early internet videos being taught in the closed phrasing, but it's the same scratch pattern.
They are suuuuper similar. Transforming begins with fader closed. When you push the fader open and closed (1 click), you get just one sound. A flare begins with fader *open*--pushing the fader closed and back open quickly in the middle of the sound (1 click) will produce two dounds. By starting w/an open fader, you get more sounds than you would with the same number of transforming clicks. This revolutionized scratching in the 1990s. (My flare scratches are still slow.) Respect from Chicago!
the scratch you do @ 2:43 is sooo sick and i'm trying hard to learn it. Please tell me if i'm close...it is 8 notes?? og flare backwards (3 notes) - reverse chirp (2 notes) - og flare (3notes)??? And if you want to you can start with the reverse chirp??
Your fader hand needs to be very precise on the cutoff points. He is very mechanical with his technique. I use a much shorter fader movement but this guy has shown me what it takes to be more precise on my cuts. I've really been studying his finger technique to improve my weak hand.

where did you get those knobs for the faders? have the same mixer. Which one fits?
Thats not a flare. You have to start and end with fader open for it to be a flare.
