Hey Clay, Thank you so much for this video. My wife took our 2005 Equinox to one of our more established auto repair shops here in Hawaii and they wanted to charge us over $300.00 to replace the thermostat and coolant. When I heard this I about hit the floor. This shop in particular appears to take advantage of people who have no idea as to what car repairs really cost. I felt something was a bit fishy when she said they needed to run "diagnostics" on something I told her to have them specifically do. (they wanted $67.00 just for that). These guys know I know what they are talking about and that I know approximately how much this type of repair should cost. Your video gave me some indication as to how difficult the repair really is and how much they should be charging. I'm not saying they shouldn't make money but they should not be in the business of gouging poor unsuspecting people out of their hard earned dollars.
Yeah $300 sounds like an awful lot I’ve been in the Auto Repair business for a number of years and I couldn’t really see charging any more than 150 for this service and I still think that’s a little bit high. But you do live in beautiful countryside.... So it’s kind of like owning a BMW or a Mercedes you may pay a little bit more where your at. God bless cheers And thank you very much for the kind words I greatly appreciate it I do think anyone could do this job it is not complicated at all
well somo mechanics don't know everything and even they break their head trying to figure it out.and in the process well they have family to, and got to pay bills.so it's a pain for everyone.lol
Best video others been doing research for a week you best explained the bleeding process clear view of everything your doing and simple to the point. Round of applause THE CLAY WAY👏👏👏
Bought 2008 Torrent 3.4 V6 AWD. Only has 140K miles. The interior does not have a place on it, the paint job and exterior is in immaculate condition! My only problem since getting it has been overheating. Does it when having to idle to long once it reaches operating temps, and when driving it starts 3-5 mins after taking off. Replaced thermostat and bled it, but not this way. It helped for about a week. It would stay cool as long as you were driving, and if idling it would start to go up quickly, but giving it the least bit of steady gas would immediately drop it back down. The heat was staying good and hot, but suddenly it went right back to the way it was. We checked the thermostat and it was warped. The old one we replaced was not like that either. May have been from the get go. Getting ready to try it again with a new thermostat, only now using your method. Now have noticed when shut vehicle off the coolant in the tank will bubble like yours was. Not constant bubbling all around like when overheating, but for 2-3 mins there will be sporadic bubble or 2 come up like a burp of air. Hoping this fixes it, bc the vehicle is in terrific condition, and I need desperately for getting back and forth to work
It should work for you because of your inconsistent bubbles when you lose heat that means that there’s an air bubble in it I would imagine if you gave it gas to heat comes back momentarily that is a sure sign of air inside the system. I don’t remember but it might not hurt when you’re trying to burp it out putting it up on car ramps think about it like this ….. The air bubble is going to be trapped in the highest part of the cooling system if the highest part of the cooling system is the tank that’s where the air bubble will go so you want that tank to be higher than anything else in the system even if you have to unbolt the tank leaving the hoses hooked up make sure it’s the highest part while you’re doing the process These are extremely stubborn systems I also will say if it does have a blown head gasket which is possible even though it’s not very bad yet they are not the hardest head gaskets to change and most mechanics should be willing to put head gaskets in that for right around $1000 plus parts and from the sounds of it it sounds like it’s worth investing the money into. I hope that helps you out brother welcome to the channel and I appreciate Having you here wish you the best of luck
Hope you remembered to recover the old one you dropped in the engine compartment. Maybe it went on thru to ground? Good video. It was easier to do than I thought it would be. Thanks for video.
i don't know how i missed this video it covered everything i needed to know before i changed my head gasket 2 years ago lol. if your still checking comments i have a question. why do you need so much fluid in the reservoir tank to burp the system? do you bleed all the air out with the bleeder screw you presented if we don't have the funnel lock that you used?
Yes you can use the bleeder screw I just use that hopper because it was easier to demonstrate what would happen inside the system and make it easier to see for people watching the video.
Idk if youll answer but its worth a shot. The metal pipe that goes from the thermostat housing and across the manifold. Can you please tell me how to remove that and if it has an o ring in it that can be replaced
I’m sure it’s removable. But it’s there so you can bleed the system along with the procedure that I did in this video. I can’t really remember exactly how it comes off. I’m pretty sure it’s only held on by one bolt on one end and then attached with hose clamps on the other just depends on exactly what you’re working on if I remember correctly sorry by the way, I always answer people or at least I try anyways, if you message me on clays ac and Auto Repair over Facebook and send me some pictures I’ll be able to for sure tell you how to take it off
I’m really surprised people like you don’t just ask people like me to come over and do it at your house for free!!!!!! Since you’re whining about a FREE video that someone took countless hours to make so douche bag troll knuckle Dragging babies like you can just sit and criticize…….. i’m guessing you’re one of those people who whine about everything…… don’t worry sir or ma’am life will get better Jesus still loves you God bless and make the best of your days.
Overheating must be a common problem with 2006 Equinox? I never have any problems until I'm idling 🙄 This was a great video! It's hard being a single woman with car issues like this. But explaining this video to the mechanic may have saved me some headache. And extra, unnecessary part replacement 🙄
Hello! My heats out and it causes the internal windshield to fog up all the time. When you switch cool to heat, you don’t hear the vents change at all. I’ve put coolant in the designated spot 2weeks ago and now again just yesterday due to it being low again. When I turn car on and slowly open the top that you put the antifreeze, it starts to boil.
Well, the reason that your windows are fogging up is because your air-conditioning is not working so your air-conditioning not working won’t allow it to suck the moisture out of the cabin. Because that’s how air-conditioning works. To make it a little bit better all you need to do is clean your windows really well and they won’t fog up as bad because of the air conditioning not working I hope that answers your question i’m not sure if the vents are switching or not because I’m not there. But if they’re truly not switching or it’s not switching from hot to cold it’s because the blend air motor is defective There are three underneath the dash one controls hot to cold. One controls position, where the air will come out of Then the other one controls inside air and outside air recirculation button It sounds like you could also have a bad heater core is your floorboard getting wet on the passenger side? I hope that helps you .
@@sharpcarco this helps! My floorboards on passenger side are not wet at all. And just clean window with windex would be fine. ? I’m hoping so because I be wiping window from inside when I’m driving
@ well make sure you clean it with cleaners so you get the moisture off the window, Windex, blah blah blah that will actually help with a considerable amount
🤔 i’m pretty sure that’s your vent hose I would have to see it to say for certain if you want to send me a DM over Facebook look up my clays AC and Auto Repair page you’ll see my You Tube shirt and Car stuff on there
Very helpful and thorough video! I noticed when you jumped back inside of the cab the Traction control light was on. Do you have a video on that as well? Have a light on the dash stating ABS and Traction control issues. Online searches say to check the break fluid levels but not sure what to look for. Its my first car and been a decade or so since working on cars with my father.
Generally that’s going to be a wheel speed sensor it’s a very common problem with them Vehicles recommend the simplest way would be just to have a scan and then replace that particular wheel bearing that is defective usually the Sensors are not serviceable but wheelbearings are very simple to replace and fairly inexpensive unless they went up like everything else has
Great video, if your able to answer or see this question pls help, I have a 2013 equinox the raidator fans will not shut off even after the car has been shutdown, I have changed the relays and ect sensor, and cleared the codes as of recently the check engine light popped on the codes reads the thermostat and the ect sensor I just replaced are the problem, until I can figure it out I'm removing relays everytime I shut car off because if I don't the battery is drained within minutes
Well if your battery dies within a couple of minutes it’s very possible that it is your battery that is defective because when the car is shut off it doesn’t have enough voltage to actuate the relay and turn the relay off so not having a good battery can definitely cause this problem. It should last more than a couple of minutes. Maybe like an hour or two so that’s one possibility The other possibility is that the relay is bad so obviously you could switch relays around and see if it still occurs. Then another cause which is nothing to check the ground could be bad for that circuit.
Great video! I'm taking my vehicle in for a new thermostat as it only blows hot if I hit recirculate. Coolant level is normal. It doesn't look too hard to get the thermostat in and out. Hopefully they won't try to say it took 5 hours to unfastened it. 😂
Thank you very much Jeff I appreciate the kind words. Your blend air door is not working correctly you may want to search underneath your hood and make sure there’s not a vacuum hose disconnected near the firewall. If yours is around the 2005 Chevy Equinox Pontiac torrent etc. etc. it’s quite possible it’s just a disconnected vacuum hose which may make it idle little bit weird. Or it could be an electronically controlled blend air door. It may be very simple and not something that you have to take it in for. If you the mechanical type if not completely understand and it shouldn’t be too expensive. Welcome and have a great day
@@sharpcarco wow - thank you very much for taking the time to offer this advice. I can hear the motor when switching between recirculate on/off. I'll mention this possibility to my mechanic. My vehicle is outside due to indoor diy projects.
In case this helps anyone - in my case (no heat or window defrost unless I pressed recirculate button) the fix for my partucular issue turned out to be a heater core flush.
Thank you so so much for the video. I hope you read and can help. Any help would be so appreciated. Ok. So I bought a 2007 equinox 3 or so years ago. It got hot. Figured blew head gasket. Pulled over. It Set for couple years. Saw video...and I been trying to fix. There's no such diagram of hoses where located/plumbed etc. The guy yanked all the heater core hoses. He Ran a hose from top to bottom to bypass the heater core ugh. And then some. So I been trying to put back together. I have looked at a 2005 and a 2006 in person. But the hoses are plumbed exactly different from each other. Ugh. I have the bottom hose connected to the y. It goes up and around the top of the engine. The other part of y goes to the bottom of the fill tank. The top hose has a y also. But goes to a looks like a exhaust manifold and to the top hose to the refill tank. (Sorry so much wish I could show pictures) it's not over heating now. But the heater isn't getting very warm. It's winter. I changed the thermostat and coolant. I'm stumped and out of ideas. Any help would be so so appreciated. Thank Bobby
I’m not quite certain on if you have the hoses ran correctly but more than likely you still have air inside the system or your heater core is defective and that’s the reason that they bypassed it. I’ve actually got a video on how to do the heater core in one of them where I’m doing it in a Pontiac torrent which should be the exact same procedure as your equinox. You could try to run some CLR through the heater core and that will help it unplug and allow your heater to work better also before you do any of the things make sure you check your cabin air filter it’s located underneath the Cowell on the passenger side of your vehicle that can cause you not to have good heat because you don’t have very good airflow into the heater box You can send me pictures you just have to send them through my Facebook page clase ac and Auto Repair . th-cam.com/video/myHtwzUoOQ8/w-d-xo.html this is the video of the heater core replacement And I’m being a little bit silly in this video plus I’m working on a jeep but I use a Chevy equinox as an example on how to replace your air filter and to check it out so you get a good idea of where your cabin air filter is in this video plus I kind of make a little bit of fun of Cardi B at the end which is rather hilarious if you ask me….. th-cam.com/video/pmN3dACheLA/w-d-xo.html I hope the information helps you solve your problem because at this time of year you definitely need heat If you’re uncertain of where the hose is go make sure you go out to a junkyard where you pick your own parts and look at a Chevy equinox or Pontiac torrent with the 3.4 in it And you should be able to see the routing rather easily more than likely you’ve got it correct though from the sounds of it
Helpful Video - thanks ---- at 56 seconds you are unplugging a connector so you can remove plastic shield. I would suggest just cutting a slit so you don't have to mess with connector and egr valve.
Clay, this one just doesn't make sense. My wife's car is 2006eqinox 3.4 poor heat. Seems like not putting enough flow through core or air bound. Been a mechanic for 53 year and this one doesn't make sense. Been trying everything to avoid head gaskets. Two new therms., new heater core new water pump. Backflushed twice , bled and bled air out . Heater core feed hot return gets warm but then cools off . New pressure cap on plastic tank .Don't see air bubbles and also used " no- spill " funnel kit. Anything crazy that you've seen. About to change head gaskets Thanks , Marty
🤔🤔🤔 well it’s just an idea and I’m not certain if I’m correct. But maybe there is a cabin filter? Or maybe your heater core has a bunch of leaves around it. I can’t remember exactly how you get to the heater core but I’m sure it’s not easy but I’m assuming you could remove the blower fan and you should be able to see the heater core or at least blow out the leaves I would give that a try I don’t think head gaskets would have anything to do with the heat unless you’re having a problem with water getting in the oil etc. etc. but I could’ve swore you said that your lines were hot coming in and out if they are not hot coming in and out there’s definitely air in the system or the thermostat is stuck completely open. Some are just my thoughts I hope
So you were able to do it without unbolting the exhaust? Knowing my luck if I try and unbolt it the studs will likely bust. I did the water pump and most of the hoses and belt yesterday, so far so good.
Unfortunately yes. I do have a video showing you how to take it apart I don’t have a video specifically on the evaporator but it’s the same job is doing the heater core
So what happens if there is already enough coolant in the coolant bottle? In this case, what do I do after I changed the thermostat? Do I have to empty the coolant or I can still burp it without adding more?
I love your name (God is my king) If there’s coolant in the bottle you will need to burp it and add whatever coolant is necessary just follow the steps and you will be just fine thank you so much God bless and have a great day
Hi. I got a 2007 equinox and it just recently i changed the fans because I found the connector to the fan was burnt and sometimes the fan would not turn on and the engine would overheat. Well i also have changed the thermostat about 2 years ago because it had not been changed since I bought the car. So after I did all this, the engine overheated on me again. I noticed that the coolant level on the reservoir does not go down and stays high after the car has been running for a while. What is causing the water level not to lower down? Is this why the engine is overheating??
Yeah hopefully it’s just got a little bit of hair inside the system Erik try bleeding it out a little bit more and burping it correctly see if that helps it go down
No you probably are just low on coolant you could either possibly have a coolant leak or it just never got filled to the proper level. But it’s doing that because it’s low on coolant and there are air pockets in the system I doubt highly that you need a thermostat, If you watch through the video again I explain how thermostats work and why they typically don’t go bad
@@sharpcarco thank you very much for the reply! Just bought the car for my daughter, and was worried that it might not be right. Guess I'm just used to the "old school" vehicles. You've out my mind at ease. Lol Have a great day!
Would a failing thermostat cause lukearm heat on this car I have that problem on mine on a 2007 with the 3.4 and I don’t wanna go for replacing the heater core cause that’s a terrible job to do but I’ll try this first?
Thermostat could cause lukewarm heat or cold air with heat on if it’s stuck open funny where having the same issue but I’m also diagnosing other things a lot with it , I replaced thermostat, & back flushed the heater core ontop of bleeding the system also needed a new blend door actuator to my heat was blowing ice cold now I’m at lukewarm at idle & some what hot driving still trying to figure out if it’s a block somewhere or possibly just the water pump failing but failing as on the fins inside the pump isn’t circulating enough coolant because the car does not over heat
@ mannn it looks like I got lucky I replaced my thermostat and still got bad heat I took a peak at my heater core and I’ll be blessed it had already been replaced with a full metal unit and it didn’t leak I flushed it about 3 times and replaced all coolant and what do you know I got heat! Did you ever get your problem figured out If not I hope you do man 👍🏾
Hi there. I’m from Oshawa Ontario. Nice video. Just wondering if you can answer a question. My daughters 2009 Chevy equinox over heated twice now. Both times the Machanic’s did pressure test and said no leaks and burped the system for air. The second Machanic couldn’t find a leak and said it’s probably the head gasket and scrap the vehicle because to expensive to fix. I think the thermostat is sticking shut. What’s your take. Thanks very much.
Well it could be the thermostat sticking shot if you follow my instructions in the video you would know for sure but the best way to test it for a bad head gasket is what’s called a “gas test” it will tell you 100% without a doubt if you have a bad head gasket. It’s extremely common for these head gaskets to go bad but not very expensive to actually fix……. They are relatively simple in my eyes but I think a lot of things are simple that other people make a big deal out of………. To repair a head gasket on a 3.4 parts and labor (without machine shop time if necessary but often not necessary) $1200 US parts and labor. Most often the number one cylinder starts to leak on the head gasket because the alternator sits right on top of that side of the cylinder head and I think helps trap gases in there so when I pull the head gaskets off I almost always see that the number one is bad. I think the 3.4 is a very decent engine with very few problems years ago they had problems with Intakes leaking on them that wasn’t a big deal as far as I was concerned but shops made a big deal out of it because they wanted to charge lots of money to fix it. No just about every single mechanic working underneath the tree in his front yard has probably done intakes on one of these and would agree that are relatively simple for the most part. But a decade ago shops needed to make money so they made it like it was a big deal….. I hope that information helps you and you get it figured out
Can you tell me which is the coolant inlet/outlet please? Hubby needs to perform a flush, but need to identify the inlet/outlet hoses to the heater core. Thanks!
Generally the inlet tube top or the closest one to the driver side. But honestly I do not know off the top of my head the inlet tube in the outlet tube for the heater core make no difference fluid will flow each way. The hose that leads from the highest point of the engine is generally the heater core inlet hose as well hopefully that helps you a little bit
Well I don’t know I made the video like three years ago and I can’t remember I’m sure if there was some kind of special gasket that you needed I would not have forgotten that
Sounds like the temp sensor to me.I'm a licenced mechanic,& i like watching all these back yard mechanic videos. Most are a better laugh then Mr Bean movies.
Hi, I changed all the antifreeze . I put new thermostat 195/91c in with a coolant and it sounds like air bubbles in one of the radiator. Other then that it seems to be ok.should the level on the tank is half way and when it gets hot should it be over the half mark for normal operation?
Hi David good evening unfortunately I had the same exact situation with mine while doing this procedure. It ended up being a bad head gasket. Lots of mechanics nowadays know how to do these head gaskets very quickly I had this one done in about six hours. Other than the pushrods going back in the identical place that they came from it is almost a fool proof job. So doing the head gaskets on them is relatively simple most the time if the vehicle is running really well you don’t need machining done to the heads. But is never a bad idea to have the machine shop check out the head While the engine is disassembled. Really sorry to tell you that David but I wish you the best of luck with it God bless and have the greatest of days
Hi, since that I had a air in the top hose kneed the hose and it worked out.everything working fine. I knew that it was something else wrong with it. Not a head gasket. Thanks all.
My wife's 08 equinox overheats and throws out the antifreeze thru the reservoir. The thermostat, fans, coolant sensor have been replaced also added Bars Leak incase the head gasket was blown. The cooling system has been burped also and the engine overheats after a few miles. The heater doesn't blow out that much hot air. Any ideas on what the problem is. Thanks
Hello Carlos of course I don’t have all of the information I know you certainly tried to give it to me but it sounds like you definitely have a blown head gasket more than likely cylinder one on the back side heads. Assuming that you have the V-6 model. Personally I absolutely love to do the head gaskets and I don’t think that it’s a very hard job most shop should charge anywhere from $15-$1000 for that job
You said it's important to block off the overflow hose... why is this? How can I do it without access to this special funnel kit you have? I'm in Mexico and can't get one.
Hey Drew. You can take a vacuum pump and hook it to the hose at the top of the reservoir. And bleed air out that way. Pull vacuum and fill with coolant at the same time and that will draw the air out of the system.
@@sharpcarco I think I understand but I'm just a DIYer, I don't have any special tools. Is there a way I can do this with a regular tall funnel? Thanks for the quick reply by the way.
Eventually you’re going to get all the air out of it you could just fill the bottle halfway full and let it circulate around inside there and eventually it will push the air out this is just a faster quicker way of doing it but the system is supposed to burp its own air out over time
Very good video. Thanks. Question please. My 2006 Equinox overheated ( I think?) for the first time while driving 125 miles on the highway. It has 160000 miles. My warning sensor sounded & the dash light symbol came on along with the temp gauge rising into the red. i pulled over right away. All the antifreeze came out of the overflow tube. No broken hoses, etc at all. The antifreeze was not even that hot & no steam whatsoever was to be seen! Do you think I had an air problem or low on antifreeze? i always check it & it seems OK . Thanks for your advice & keep the videos coming.
I filled in the slot for the bottom bolt with epoxy it was a major pain for my sausage fingers to get the bolt started so after a lot of frustration I just filled it in with grease on the bolt. Waited five minutes and problem solved. Chevy Equinox, failure is not an option it’s built in.
I have a question for you Clay, my temp sensor indicator sometimes doesn't indicate(no movement) then other times it works fine, shows temp and everything. What do you think is the problem?
That’s a great question Eric.... in the back of the instrument cluster there are little motors that control the different gauges and the motors go bad. Now obviously it could be also a wiring issue but I highly doubt it because it’s quite a common problem with General Motors products so I would recommend replacing the instrument cluster first you can have them rebuilt there’s places all over the Internet that do them or if you use the guy I use people send Dash clusters from all over the United States and his name is Josh at Dash doctor in Grand Rapids Michigan he’s a great guy tell him I sent you he will give you a deal. It’s usually about $125-$150
If I remember right, this tank doesn’t work that way, but if you do think you have too much, then suck some of it out. And even as old as this video, is that vehicle still on the road and I don’t think we’ve serviced the coolant system since but you could be right makes more sense I just don’t remember.
You’re welcome Kendra you should always burp it out but it’s not always 100% necessary. Sometimes not burping it out and causes your heater to work sporadically because there’s is air bubbles in the cooling system and could cause it to overheat damaging the engine so I do recommend it . Have a great day god bless
I didn’t say that because that’s not how you do it just because I didn’t do it. That way. It doesn’t mean it won’t work, but you can’t explain things like that so some people I try to keep them simple even though they’re complicated good for you. glad you figured out a different way of doing it.
So my car runs hot to 2007 Chevy equinox I don't get any heat now after replacing the thermostat and thermostat sensor Could this be occurring because I may have too much fluid in my reservoir? Should I open the 7 mm and let some flow out to set to cold operating temperature?
Always put your oil fill cap back on while you are working on the car. You don't want to drop something in to that hole. Life gets expensive if you do.
Hey. Have you every got the warming hot engine ac off. I ready it on line. It's the engine coolant sensor / thermostat. It's a 2007 Chevy equinox is 3.4 fwd. It only gets a quarter high on temp Reading if it works and it don't work with the warming is up. But SUV works fine.
Hello Zoe yes I have had that warning indicator and yes you are correct it’s generally just the temperature sensor that is malfunctioning. Obviously you want to keep an eye on everything even after you replace it just to be sure I hope that information is helpful for you God bless and have a great day
@@sharpcarco yep, the warning is not all the time and the both of the electrical fans spins fine. I was looking around saw your video and he may saw this before. Thank you for the replay. Since I thinking about it I should check the coolant level now.
@@sharpcarco actually I thinking about changing my name on her. I was like I name it after my kids but weird in chat rooms, they said Zoe etc. But I think my 13 year old can pick a good name for her old man.
I can’t get anything to come outta my bleeder screw regardless of engine running or off. Could the water pump be bad? Or maybe a head gasket because it will overheat and heater stays cool. I changed the thermostat and went with a 180 degree one. No water in oil and exhaust doesn’t smell funny so I’m kinda stumped! Any advice??
I tried flushing the coolant without the funell I filled up the resivour and cracked the bleeder bolt and all that’s coming out is the distilled water I put in to flush the system but the upper and lower radiator hoses aren’t filling up their just full of air I ran the engine it got to the half way mark and the fans kicked on and all of the water in the coolant resivour started boiling and pouring out bc I had left it open, is their something I’m missing or doing wrong
Tried this today, and it didn't over heat until I drove it.. my thermostat wouldn't open.. I bleeded all the air out, but I could not get this equniox to take more then 4 to 6 quarts. My heat was hot, and I sat their like an hour, it bubble kinda alot, but if I closed the bleeder, waited couple min.. the bubbles would come
Well of course this is just a text message and I’m not there but my best assumption would be that you have a blown head gasket allowing combustion gas to get inside the cooling system causing it to vapor lock and overheat. Sorry wish I had better news for you
Te quiero hacer una pregunta que Dios lo bendigaporque mi guagua después que le cambiaron la aceite ahora por la mañana prende un poquito enama cuando está fría
Hey how you doing my equinox 06 it's getting hot when I'm driving on autozone they plugged the scanner n the. P0171 came up you think this might be the problem ??
Good evening More than likely you have a leaky intake. Or a bad head gasket because of the type of code you have it would not hurt to try to change the thermostat. I’m sorry I wish I could be of more help I wish you the best God bless and have a great day
It might, but it might not. This should be the second step, unless there's actual coolant inside on the floor. First step is make sure your coolant is the proper level. So many times I've seen people ride around with no heat because they simply don't have enough coolant.
Well it be difficult to say you would have to check the temperature of the hoses going into the heater core from the firewall if they are hot then you have what’s called a blend air door Problem and it wouldn’t be the thermostat
Ummm...great vid, but you skipped the part where you remove it and replace it 🤷🤷 Did you unscrew/screw or just pull and remove? 😂😂 Please and thank you

This would have been nice to have found before I vapor locked the engine and blew out the head gaskets on mine. Tried to burp it, didn’t work, white smoke. Oh and the stock gaskets are PAPER!!!!!!!!
Your video is nice but it says nothing about what trick you used to actually get thermostat housing out. It is only about an inch and a half from exhaust crossover pipe and will not come out with or without thermostat inside. You immediately jump to housing out. Thanks.
Hmmm I do try to show them things in my videos there must’ve been a reason why but it’s also possible that all you have to do a spin it so give it a try. If it came out for me I’m sure it will come out for you too. I definitely try
That is 99% of the time caused because the coolant level is low there is an air pocket in the cooling system which is not allowing the coolant to flow through properly.

my van running hot what do changed
I changed thermostat and waterpomp already
What kind of van are you working on what kind of vehicle is it?
Like your videos does anybody know where the PCV valve is located? very hard to find on this vehicle
Depends on which year yours is where it is located but most of the time it’s on the front valve cover closest to the radiator underneath the bracket right directly into the valve cover
Excellent & thorough presentation. Would be absolutely wonderful if there were such TEACHERS in our society schooling system.
I genuinely Lol'd when you fumbled the old thermostat and sent it flying. Nice one bud.
God bless cheers And thank you very much for the kind words I greatly appreciate it I do think anyone could do this job it is not complicated at all
$67. 00 to change your thermostat and coolant
Sounds reasonable
woodhandj They wanted $67 just to look at it they wanted over 300 to do the work
Book Time on thermostat I believe is 1 hour
well somo mechanics don't know everything and even they break their head trying to figure it out.and in the process well they have family to, and got to pay bills.so it's a pain for everyone.lol
Best video others been doing research for a week you best explained the bleeding process clear view of everything your doing and simple to the point. Round of applause THE CLAY WAY👏👏👏
thanks for the video took me 45 min from start to finish and I never did the job before. tackle it folks it's a piece of cake.
Excellent video. Recommend covering the oil entry port before doing any work to prevent anything accidently falling into the engine.
P:
The air bubble is going to be trapped in the highest part of the cooling system if the highest part of the cooling system is the tank that’s where the air bubble will go so you want that tank to be higher than anything else in the system even if you have to unbolt the tank leaving the hoses hooked up make sure it’s the highest part while you’re doing the process
These are extremely stubborn systems
I also will say if it does have a blown head gasket which is possible even though it’s not very bad yet they are not the hardest head gaskets to change and most mechanics should be willing to put head gaskets in that for right around $1000 plus parts and from the sounds of it it sounds like it’s worth investing the money into.
I hope that helps you out brother welcome to the channel and I appreciate Having you here wish you the best of luck
By far the best video out there for doing a coolant change/problem out there for this year chevy, and ive looked.
Finally somebody with something nice to say today I’ve been beat up all day long thank you very much I greatly appreciate the compliment
ngl watched like 3 videos on how to do this job but the most useful bit of info was the wrench thing omg its so good
Thanks Clay and brackets are rock solid on rusty marooned Equisex!
Thank you. Everything I needed to know and the job went smoothly and quickly.
Well, you’re very welcome. Happy to have you. I appreciate the kind words welcome to the channel.
Thanks for much for this video. I would have never thought I would be able to change the thermostat while myself! Much appreciated.
Hope you remembered to recover the old one you dropped in the engine compartment. Maybe it went on thru to ground? Good video. It was easier to do than I thought it would be. Thanks for video.
Yeah you probably missed the part where I said put the catch pan underneath it
i don't know how i missed this video it covered everything i needed to know before i changed my head gasket 2 years ago lol. if your still checking comments i have a question. why do you need so much fluid in the reservoir tank to burp the system? do you bleed all the air out with the bleeder screw you presented if we don't have the funnel lock that you used?
Yes you can use the bleeder screw I just use that hopper because it was easier to demonstrate what would happen inside the system and make it easier to see for people watching the video.
Hey brother I want to thank you for your video it helped me out a lot. God-bless
I just subscribe
Well welcome thank you very much I’m glad it was helpful
Thank you so much for explaining the no spill funnel!!! 😁
You’re very welcome. I love your thumbnail. Welcome to the channel. Happy to have you. Have a great day.
thanks for the video clay. that anti spill funnel is very good tool
You’re welcome Nick welcome to the Channell thank you for the kind words
I giggled a lil when the thermostats fell in the car hehe
Thanks. This is perfect. Answered all the questions. Great vid.
I’m pretty sure it’s only held on by one bolt on one end and then attached with hose clamps on the other just depends on exactly what you’re working on if I remember correctly sorry by the way, I always answer people or at least I try anyways, if you message me on clays ac and Auto Repair over Facebook and send me some pictures I’ll be able to for sure tell you how to take it off
I really enjoyed this video straight too the point and understandable simple 👏
I love when people make videos without the exact tools in the description needed for the procedure
I’m really surprised people like you don’t just ask people like me to come over and do it at your house for free!!!!!! Since you’re whining about a FREE video that someone took countless hours to make so douche bag troll knuckle Dragging babies like you can just sit and criticize…….. i’m guessing you’re one of those people who whine about everything……
don’t worry sir or ma’am life will get better Jesus still loves you God bless and make the best of your days.

Welcome to the channel Alex I was just in your neck of the woods earlier this week
I'm from angola lol
That’s awesome Jim . Some beautiful country down that way ,
Overheating must be a common problem with 2006 Equinox? I never have any problems until I'm idling 🙄 This was a great video! It's hard being a single woman with car issues like this. But explaining this video to the mechanic may have saved me some headache. And extra, unnecessary part replacement 🙄
Well I’m very glad that I could help thank you for the kind words
The motor is kind of known to be hard on intake gaskets.
To make it a little bit better all you need to do is clean your windows really well and they won’t fog up as bad because of the air conditioning not working
I hope that answers your question i’m not sure if the vents are switching or not because I’m not there.
But if they’re truly not switching or it’s not switching from hot to cold it’s because the blend air motor is defective There are three underneath the dash one controls hot to cold.
One controls position, where the air will come out of
Then the other one controls inside air and outside air recirculation button
It sounds like you could also have a bad heater core is your floorboard getting wet on the passenger side?
I hope that helps you .
@@sharpcarco this helps! My floorboards on passenger side are not wet at all. And just clean window with windex would be fine. ? I’m hoping so because I be wiping window from inside when I’m driving
@ well make sure you clean it with cleaners so you get the moisture off the window, Windex, blah blah blah that will actually help with a considerable amount
Hey I have a question what is the hose coming out of the back of the thermo housing? It kinda Y's off to the reservoir
🤔 i’m pretty sure that’s your vent hose I would have to see it to say for certain if you want to send me a DM over Facebook look up my clays AC and Auto Repair page you’ll see my You Tube shirt and Car stuff on there
@@sharpcarco OK thank you That is what I thought it was I will send a dm
Maybe like an hour or two so that’s one possibility
The other possibility is that the relay is bad so obviously you could switch relays around and see if it still occurs.
Then another cause which is nothing to check the ground could be bad for that circuit.
Hi Clay
I'm changing the thermostat . Wen I removed it. Half of it was missing
Well, hopefully the video was helpful because it sounds like you might’ve found your problem…..
You could try to run some CLR through the heater core and that will help it unplug and allow your heater to work better also before you do any of the things make sure you check your cabin air filter it’s located underneath the Cowell on the passenger side of your vehicle that can cause you not to have good heat because you don’t have very good airflow into the heater box
You can send me pictures you just have to send them through my Facebook page clase ac and Auto Repair .
th-cam.com/video/myHtwzUoOQ8/w-d-xo.html this is the video of the heater core replacement
And I’m being a little bit silly in this video plus I’m working on a jeep but I use a Chevy equinox as an example on how to replace your air filter and to check it out so you get a good idea of where your cabin air filter is in this video plus I kind of make a little bit of fun of Cardi B at the end which is rather hilarious if you ask me…..
th-cam.com/video/pmN3dACheLA/w-d-xo.html
I hope the information helps you solve your problem because at this time of year you definitely need heat
If you’re uncertain of where the hose is go make sure you go out to a junkyard where you pick your own parts and look at a Chevy equinox or Pontiac torrent with the 3.4 in it
And you should be able to see the routing rather easily more than likely you’ve got it correct though from the sounds of it
Helpful Video - thanks ---- at 56 seconds you are unplugging a connector so you can remove plastic shield. I would suggest just cutting a slit so you don't have to mess with connector and egr valve.
Excellent. Now can you do transmission fluid drain and fill?
No you do not , I think I told you how and why
Excellent information!
Freon came through the dash when I tried to refill . Expensive fix?
Unfortunately yes. I do have a video showing you how to take it apart I don’t have a video specifically on the evaporator but it’s the same job is doing the heater core
Great video, but a woman who knows nothing, I would have liked to actually see you put the thing on. However, GREAT TEACHER
Could a bad thermostat cause the heater to blow cool air?
Low coolant … will , because of air and empty space In system
So what happens if there is already enough coolant in the coolant bottle? In this case, what do I do after I changed the thermostat? Do I have to empty the coolant or I can still burp it without adding more?
I love your name (God is my king) If there’s coolant in the bottle you will need to burp it and add whatever coolant is necessary just follow the steps and you will be just fine thank you so much God bless and have a great day
Great video, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
thank you very much for the help, I think mine hopefully will have this.
Yeah hopefully it’s just got a little bit of hair inside the system Erik try bleeding it out a little bit more and burping it correctly see if that helps it go down
@@sharpcarco ok. To bleed it, does the engine need to be running or turned off??
How would I go about burping the coolant system/overflow? Also any tips for draining the coolant tank?
My 2007 Equinox does not blow heat all the time, it is sometimes cold. The temperature stays halfway most of the time. Should I change the thermostat?
No you probably are just low on coolant you could either possibly have a coolant leak or it just never got filled to the proper level. But it’s doing that because it’s low on coolant and there are air pockets in the system I doubt highly that you need a thermostat, If you watch through the video again I explain how thermostats work and why they typically don’t go bad
Ok, this may be a stupid question, but is it normal to see the coolant flowing into the overflow bottle with the engine running?
Yes it is normal and no that’s not a stupid question
@@sharpcarco thank you very much for the reply! Just bought the car for my daughter, and was worried that it might not be right. Guess I'm just used to the "old school" vehicles. You've out my mind at ease. Lol
Have a great day!
Did you ever get your problem figured out If not I hope you do man 👍🏾
Can you do this with a heater core bypass?…I have a 2007 Chevy Equinox as well.
Yes, the coolant still needs to flow to the radiator, and the thermostat allows that to happen.
What size engine is it
@@sharpcarco 3.4 v6
VERY HELPFUL ... Thanks!
Can you do a thermostat video on 2013 Captiva
I’m very sorry I don’t have one but if I ever do get one Dwight I promise you I will!!
@@sharpcarco ok and thank you
Any gasket or sealer involved when replacing?
Well I don’t know I made the video like three years ago and I can’t remember I’m sure if there was some kind of special gasket that you needed I would not have forgotten that
The thermostat has a rubber gasket built in. There is a groove it fits into for reinstallation.
My 2007 Equinox just got a overheating idle warning, and the radiator fan did not turn on, I guess it is this.
Sounds like the temp sensor to me.I'm a licenced mechanic,& i like watching all these back yard mechanic videos. Most are a better laugh then Mr Bean movies.
I just replaced my temp in 2007 equinox it still over heating I replaced radiator and water idk what to do next
I never Burp the lines can that be the issue
Eventually you’re going to get all the air out of it you could just fill the bottle halfway full and let it circulate around inside there and eventually it will push the air out this is just a faster quicker way of doing it but the system is supposed to burp its own air out over time
@@sharpcarco ok I'll give it another shot, it just kept overflowing on me big time, does that mean i had too much coolant in the reservoir?
Drew Myrtle No more than likely that means you have a blown head gasket
What did it end up being problem?
I filled in the slot for the bottom bolt with epoxy it was a major pain for my sausage fingers to get the bolt started so after a lot of frustration I just filled it in with grease on the bolt. Waited five minutes and problem solved. Chevy Equinox, failure is not an option it’s built in.
That’s awesome….. sometimes sausage fingers are helpful and sometimes they’re not welcome to the channel brother!!!!
It’s usually about $125-$150
But now don’t you have too much coolant in the overflow tank?
If I remember right, this tank doesn’t work that way, but if you do think you have too much, then suck some of it out.
And even as old as this video, is that vehicle still on the road and I don’t think we’ve serviced the coolant system since but you could be right makes more sense I just don’t remember.
Excellent job sir.
Great and helpful video...thanks!!!
Hi Clay, thanks for the video! Question....Do you have to burp it to change the thermostat?
You’re welcome Kendra you should always burp it out but it’s not always 100% necessary. Sometimes not burping it out and causes your heater to work sporadically because there’s is air bubbles in the cooling system and could cause it to overheat damaging the engine so I do recommend it . Have a great day god bless
You should also say to run the vehicle with the bleeder screw open for about 15 to 20 minutes..did that for my 06 equinox..I now have heat again..
After the thermostat is up to temp..
Great job...thank you...
Also, can you put details of where you purchased the funnel etc to work on your Jeep. This will be helpful. Thank you
Well I’ve had a lot of my tools for a number of years that particular tool that I use in here the funnel kit is available at every auto parts store
Really complicated! Can you show how to replace the spark plugs; they are not easy to do. thanks
I will make a video next time I have one to work on
Tried this today, and it didn't over heat until I drove it.. my thermostat wouldn't open..
Sorry wish I had better news for you
How much does this cost for replacement
About $100 I’m just guessing I don’t know what part of the country you’re in or even if you’re in the United States
Te quiero hacer una pregunta que Dios lo bendigaporque mi guagua después que le cambiaron la aceite ahora por la mañana prende un poquito enama cuando está fría
Hi what should I do if it overheats and have a leak??
Fix the leak and then more than likely it will not overheat any longer
My equinox shows that it’s hot but the engine dosent show no signs of being hot at all?? What do I do
I can only speculate that it’s possible that you have a bad temperature sensor so I would recommend replacing it
Hey how you doing my equinox 06 it's getting hot when I'm driving on autozone they plugged the scanner n the. P0171 came up you think this might be the problem ??
Good evening More than likely you have a leaky intake. Or a bad head gasket because of the type of code you have it would not hurt to try to change the thermostat.
I’m sorry I wish I could be of more help I wish you the best God bless and have a great day
What it called where thermostat sits in on 06 equinox its broken where bottom bolt goes
Thermostat housing, I can’t remember if the thermostat housing is part of the lower intake but I do think it separates
Will this fix the no heat and the fan still work in the inside?
It might, but it might not. This should be the second step, unless there's actual coolant inside on the floor. First step is make sure your coolant is the proper level. So many times I've seen people ride around with no heat because they simply don't have enough coolant.
Excellent video 👍 subd 👍
Thank you! Welcome to the show!
My 07 torrent, heater not work (blowing cold) and engine temp gauge highest always. Thermostat problems?
Well it be difficult to say you would have to check the temperature of the hoses going into the heater core from the firewall if they are hot then you have what’s called a blend air door Problem and it wouldn’t be the thermostat
My Chevy equinox does the same but the thermostat works when I restarted the battery help
What about burping a Chevy equinox 2008? How would I do that
Absolutely this procedure works on just about any vehicle.
Thank you 💥🛠
On a 05 Equinox change water pump thermostat and still runs hot on idle why
Ummm...great vid, but you skipped the part where you remove it and replace it 🤷🤷
Did you unscrew/screw or just pull and remove? 😂😂
Please and thank you
Where can I buy that funnel system??
Of course I loan out my tools all the time you just got a pay what a new one will cost me if you don’t bring mine back….. and then I refund it
What’s the part number on the burp funnel
Lisle 24680, i’m not a paid endorser for Lisle..... but if you’re interested in helping me out you’re more than welcome to email them and let them know that I helped you find their great products..... It may help me in the future if I ever want to do advertising for them
@@sharpcarco how do you bypass the overflow outlet when using that
This would have been nice to have found before I vapor locked the engine and blew out the head gaskets on mine.
I had my thermostat replaced at times it'll blow hot til I stop it'll blow cold why is that
That is 99% of the time caused because the coolant level is low there is an air pocket in the cooling system which is not allowing the coolant to flow through properly.
Spill- Free Funnel use enables comfort to do task. Pronouncing “Lisle” seems as less-Lee, rather than as “Lyle”. Cheers to Clay Way !
Very helpful thanks
I love how you didnt even react 3:17 I meant to do that
Very informative
Thanks bruv
You’re very welcome Larry. Hopefully it turns out handy for you.
Thanks
