  • Usagi Yojimbo is a classic, but it can be confusing figuring out how to start. In this episode, we offer three different and distinct strategies (or approaches) to the over-thirty years worth of Usagi Yojimbo stories out there.
    Half about Usagi Yojimbo and half about you, this video navigates both Usagi Yojimbo's storytelling and publishing history, finding the best match to the type of reader you are!
    We undertake our first 'all advice' video, which also happens to be our first viewer request (woo-hoo, we've arrived!) We'd love to hear from you if you have any others!
    Where to buy these books (in India):

    Wonderful! Thank you so much. This is Stan Sakai, btw, the creator of Usagi Yojimbo. Good news for the completionist--the Fantagraphics volumes, the first 7 trade collections, are in print and they have scheduled the reprinting of the two-volume omnibus Special Edition for this summer (June or July, I believe). Again, thank you for this video. I try to make my stories as accessible as possible to all readers, but I never thought to divide up reader types as you have done.

      I'm seldom lost for words, but to have Mr Sakai comment on my video...thank you so much for your monumental and magical works! Also, great news about the reprint of the slipcase edition - I'm going to go look those up right now. Thanks so much for taking the time!

      Volumes 6/7 seems to be out of print too, which is weird being the last ones published. I hope DH will reprint them all.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @BMFMProject - yes, I believe that's right. If you're able to get The Special Edition, that does it, except for non-Sakai Usagi (which I don't care about). The Special Edition is hard to get; I was able to get the original issues, but I'd still love to have that set.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here in India a number of the first seven trades, even the later DH trades, can only be imported (not kept in stock in-country) and the prices are quite high. The Saga volumes, however, are well priced and more easily available, the last I checked.
      I think I was talking mainly from the price/availability point of view, and they may as well be out of print, as far as we're concerned =(

    • @Nightmist82
      @Nightmist82 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I totally agree with your suggestion, the saga volumes are clearly the best options for new reader, they're huge and the price is really affordable. Almost everything goes out of print once in a while, i have faith in Dark Horse, they really seem to support Yojimbo.

    Thank you so much for your comprehensive reviews and understanding of new readers. i just stumbled across your videos and I love the way you talk about the story, characterisation, and other facets of comics that are hugely important to me as a reader. Usagi Yojimbo sounds so fantastic I'm surprised it slipped past me for so long! I feel like I'm a mix of reader number 2 and 3 so I'll have to figure out where to start!

      Thank you much, it is so gratifying to hear that because that is definitely the attempt - to approach it from a reader's point of view. With Usagi, books are being reprinted right now which makes a lot of different things possible re: introducing yourself to this excellent series. Usagi Yojimbo Origins from IDW next month will be reprinting the first trade in colour (they were originally black and white) so there's that as a new possibility! 😁

      Usagi Saga =) If I´d happen to like it (something tells me that I will) will go back to the first volumes that are also newly edited here in the same "omnibus" format as in the US. After a long wait, this year we spanish comic fans will be able to have the whole series available!

      @ftloc  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's great, everyone should at least try this series; and let me know what you think!
      So the early issues are in a two-volume slipcase as well? Or is this one volume? And are these translated into Spanish, or in English? Are they Dark Horse/ Fantagraphics publications, or has a different publisher licensed them for Spain? As you can tell, I'm very interested in how Usagi is being introduced to new readers =)

    • @Alexborrego83
      @Alexborrego83 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, as soon as I finish reading it I will let you know :) It is the exact same edition you mention in 3:34 published by the spanish publisher "Planeta Comic" who has bought the publication rights directly from Dark Horse (in the back cover you can even see the Dark Horse logo) and of course, it is translated to spanish.
      Usagi has been published in Spain since the year 2000 by the same publisher with great success, because the same comics are also exported to México and Latin American countries, where I believe Usagi is quite popular as well :) but the early numbers are hard to find, that´s why last year Planeta published the 2 Fantagraphics issues, and now is going on with the "Saga" volumes.
      This month they just published the second volume, so I hope that during 2018-2019 the remaining volumes will also be available (I think there are 7 in total?)

    Excellent advice for the dabbler: any issue, any time, an excellent choice. Likewise for the connoisseur, although I guess a lot of people start with Grasscutter. Completionists...heh... ah well. And then, you know, there are the very lucky group: those who actually were able to start with the Albedo issues when they came out, and just...never...stopped buying Usagi. Excellent video on an excellent comic book, and wow: excellent comments by Stan himself!

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Grasscutter is often declared the perfect starting point for dabblers, although - naturally - I think that could just as easily be Circles, or the Dragon Bellow Conspiracy, and others. I thought the 'connoisseur' may want to immediately continue with a lengthier read if they enjoy it, therefore three volumes sequentially seemed the perfect option! =)

    Because of your recommandations i did some research on this series. Although the series has a rather episodical nature, it's not i need to read 'everything from scratch' but i at least wanted to start somewhere relevant, like the start of the Mirage- and DH-run. That's because i am intrested in some larger arcs and overarching story development as well. I would have thought that maybe a number of the hardcovers and special editions were out of print. Because i am basically a TP-guy i though i would be fine with getting the first omnibus /volume of the Mirage-run. Very soon i discovered a lot of the books that are proposed in your videos of some years back are completely out of print. Maybe in some cases they could still be obtainable within the US itself. I generally don't like to order directly in the US, because of the high export takses (i live in Europe). For the moment it seems like the Fantagraphics original run special edition HC and TP are out of print, from the Mirage original HC and TP most of the books are out of print as well. I only discovered volume 5 and 7 (hardcover), but i really wanted to start with volume 1 TP, so it's a disappointment. There are some indications the Fantagraphics original run special would be in reprint for a nearby date, but i haven't found any real confirmation of this. I rather not pursue second hand highly priced volumes (unless i can check them out muself fe in local comic book store) because of the high risk of getting copies that are damaged or in inproper conditions. I also found there is a quite expensive special editon (Grascutters saga) available, but it's really too expensive (or better stated: its price is not the amount of money i am prepared to spend for it), the books costs 150 dollars and again distribution point America. You have some very intresting videos concerning where to start. But: the availability is currently somehow dated, a lot of what was available in 2018 no longer is. If you know of reprints that are scheduled close by (and available in countries outside US), it would be very intresting to hear so. It would be nice if some basics of this series were at least constantly available in TP worldwide. It doesn't help as a promoter for the series to gain more reputation wordwide if it's rather difficult to access. And that's a pitty if it's really a great series, which i tend to believe even without having read it. Concerning the future: maybe it's not a bad thing it's owned by IDW now (the good thing is they are internationally better distributed than Fantagraphics or Dark Horse, the bad thing is: IDW can be rather expensive, their Grascutters-special editon and Turtles-run fe aren't very lightly priced), i however hope they reprint the whole series in color some day, but that will take time and the IDW-run at this point is not a valable anchor-point yet IMO because of the limited content. They have only just started printing.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's really unfortunate - being outside the US myself, I completely sympathize with how hard it is to get some of these comics, especially once they become out of print.
      IDW are going to reprint the entire series in colour and the first volume is scheduled for December 2020. This is Samurai, the first seven issues, and from what I could see the ISBN is 9781684057405. Let's see about price and availability outside of the US, eh?
      In the meantime, if you can get your hands on Dark Horse's Usagi Saga Book 1 in paperback, you will get the stories from the start of the Mirage run, so just missing the first 7 trades/Fantagraphics box set, but maybe you've already checked for that?

    • @PC-lv8dq
      @PC-lv8dq 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ftloc Nope i'd understand the early Fantagraphics runs is no longer available, i would be completely satisfied with the start of the Mirage run, but it's no longer available as well, not even in TP. Full color is no defintive way to have those comics, i could live with BW, as this is the original form as they were presented, it's just frustrating at this moment so few volumes are available. I could start at volume 5, bit i'd rather have an archor point earlier on. The question i pose myself: if the series if they are republished and are sold out so fast, there is a commercially intresting reason to reprint them, isn't there? So why doesn't it simply happen, as there is a substantial demand? We can wait for IDW, but it will take a long time to see the whole run, and, as i have already stated, i'm afraid for the prices IDW will demand for them. I honestly love, really love, a physical copy of a book, but i'm considering going digital if prices keep on going up that much for paper.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, digital definitely sounds like the way to go here, but being an almost exclusively print reader myself, I can see it not being the ideal. And as to why such popular books are not always in print is something I find very hard to understand myself. The stocks-distribution system in print publishing must be even more messed up that I imagine?

    Thanx for this video! Where i live it was hard to get a copy of Usagi and english was not so widly spoken yet, but i played the C64 game a lot. In fact i returned to the game recently again and love to play it so thought i finally dellwe in to the world of Usagi. This video helps because wow, theres a lot to dig in to. I just happen to find Book 1 from Fantagraphics (The Ronin) to start this journey, but here comes my question. Is these books from Fantagrapics earler stories of Usagi compared to the thicker books, as example nr 1 of Dark Horse?
    Edit: Aha, re-watched the video again and my question got an answer, i was lucky to find Book one of the older series then i guess. Got it for 5 dollars \0/

      What a lucky break that you got the very first volume by pure chance! 😀 The Dark Horse ‘Usagi Saga’ books start from the Mirage Comics run, so you’ll have to get the Fantagraphics stories in either the volumes 1-8 or the slipcase box set, the paperback edition of which has been reprinted and you may get lucky enough to find! Good luck and happy reading! If you like the series, check out my other Usagi videos too! 😀

      Absolutely. It is a terrific standalone read and a great introduction to the world of Usagi Yojimbo. It does bring together a number of characters previously featured but you won't be lost or confused at all!

    I started w/ the 1st 7 tpbs for 40 bucks off ebay as a taste. Then the DH early trades were hard to find so I had to wait til the Usagi Yojimbo Saga mega trade collections to fill my void. Now, I have the 2 volume set from Fantagraphics, the UY Saga 1-7 collections & the last few tpbs as the Dark Horse era comes to an end. I'm a Usagi junkie.

    I watched all your Usagi Yojimbo videos today with great interest.
    I was given a copy of the first Dark Horse big fatty Saga volume as a Christmas present about 3 or 4 years ago from one of my oldest school (and comic book) friends. I'm ashamed to say I let out a silent sigh... and turned my nose up at what I thought looked like a rather naff "funny animals" comic in the vein of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles partly because my friend Ian has given me quite a few comic book stinkers over the years. I know I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth but...Anyway, the volume sat on my shelf until I decided to have a clear out of all the stuff I no longer wanted via eBay. Luckily I also decided to at least give this obvious clunker a go and read the first story or so. What happened? I was immediately hooked of course! Trying not to feel like a silly dummy for the error of my ways, I spent the rest of the day avidly reading what I realised was a really, really great comic with absolutely excellent writing and stories. I then ordered all of the rest of the volumes in the Saga series and the Fantagraphics boxset plus the Legends volume. I confess that I'm yet to read them all as I no doubt got distracted by other comics, films and the such. Your videos will no doubt help correct that rather unsatisfactory state of affairs.
    I have a couple of questions. Does the Fantagraphics boxset contain all of the pre-Dark Horse stuff? If not what else do I need to buy? Also, Saga book 8 finishes with the story The Hell Screen, is there one of those nice signed hardbacks following on from that story? I really like the look of them. And finally, are there any other volumes I need to get?
    Thanks in advance and please feel free to invoice me with your consultancy fee.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We've already dealt with the Fantagraphics box set question luckily! 😁
      As for the remaining stories, I know there are two more Dark Horse volumes - Mysteries (Vol 32) and The Hidden (Vol 33) that followed the Hell Screen and are out as slender volumes both in paperback as well as limited hardcover editions.
      That wouldn't be enough for another Saga volume, so I'm guessing that is all we will see out of Dark Horse now that Usagi has moved to IDW.
      I am not very abreast of what kind of editions and reprints IDW has planned for Usagi, especially of the recent past, so that sounds like a research project for me if I want to be worthy of any kind of consultancy fee!

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I completely forgot to say that's a great Usagi discovery story. I can definitely see people dismissing it on superficial reasons (specially if one groups it together with other comics they think less of) but you also demonstrate how the quality of the series can overcome the strongest of (incorrect) assumptions. Very glad you decided to go through the volume before selling it off, as I sure you are as well~!

      @@ftloc Can you believe that I can only find 32 in plush hardback and 33 in softback. What shall I do? It would be nice to have them in the same format if there aren't going to be any more Dark Horse saga books. I'm having a comics crisis!

      @ftloc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pysarlis haha now there's the kind of conundrum I can truly relate to. The two hardcovers would have been way too expensive for me to try and grab, so I've decided to wait and see what IDW decide to do. Given that there are eight Saga volumes out there, they may do a ninth themselves and I know from the Artist/Gallery editions they can match quality of what came before. Think that's a crazy long shot I'm playing?

      I've always felt Dragon Bellow is the true precursor to Grasscutter in so many ways. But like Grasscutter, someone pointed out to me that the frission of joy one feels in seeing various characters from the past come together would be 'wasted' on someone encountering Usagi for the first time. I don't agree 100%, but i see the point.

      teeholisti-hippi Thank *you* for watching and for your kind words! Yes, UY Saga 1 is a great starting point. Although -and I’ve never been so glad to be obsolete - Mr Sakai himself confirmed in these comments that the earlier volumes are in print and easily available (at least in the USA) and the two volume omnibus set of those stories is being reprinted summer of 2018. The unavailability of those was a factor in me picking the Saga as a starting point. I’d be equally enthusiastic about The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy, Circles, and of course Grasscutter as earlier starting points, if easily available! 😀
