Which blade should I order to cut the metal edge trim? 80 or 100 tooth?
@@dannyaguado more teeth means finer/smoother cut, but is a little slower. go for 100tpi and wear ear muffs
The blade in the miter saw is 12 in. but the blade in the above link is 7-1/4 in. Can this (or my 10 in saw) take smaller blades?

Lanberg is doing it all up to code 100% he even pushed in extra adhesive into the areas were he is going to insert his tile trims so there is absolutely no way the tiles or anything for that matter will be compromised he is an exceptional tiler so give him credit and praise for taking his personal time showing us these very helpful and insightful videos
I would install bottom first, then the back. Then any water that comes down the back is automatically directed onto the bottom piece and will flow out of the niche. You DON’T want a vertical surface meeting a horizontal surface where the water can go right into the grout line. Same for the bottom of the shower. Install your floor tile first, then do your walls so the water is coming down the wall right onto the sloped floor.
I was thinking the same thing, I wonder why he did it that way. And I've seen other videos where the installer did the same thing. I guess to cover the cut of the bottom edge of the back tile to give it a cleaner look? Still not worth it. I've seen shower floors fail for this reason. Everything should be done with water shed in mind.
I agree and I am no expert, but to seal that niche, the home owner will need alot of silicon, but as we all know that silicone will fail at some point and the home owner will probably not know that it failed until all the lower tiles fail. I am wondering if they could mig or tig the joints and have the bottom plate actually extend over the bottom metal so water never even hits it.
@@bs4760 He will use still the same amount of caulk. You should caulk every inner corner in wet places.

Looks great bro I’ve been doing this kind of work for 27 years and I still love doing this very satisfying when the cuts and corner metals come out nicely cut I got sertified with schluter in up in their home base in Pensilvania years back and love all their materials they make great stuff
I am wondering if there is concern with water ingress at the mitre joints of the trim? thoughts?

@@shawnlittle7207 If there is any water penetration, it will naturally dry out as the substrate is kerdiboard (waterproof) and as long as that has been installed correctly, there shouldn't be any long term issues. Water can also be absorbed through grout lines but this will also naturally dry out after use.

Because it goes against schluter’s installation instructions. It will fail because the mortar is pushed out of the way instead of imbedded like it calls for.
You can imagine how that mortar is pushed out of the way like Amy points out. So no tile adhesion on this edge. So in reality you have voids where water can pool and get behind the tiles more than if installed per Schluter instructions. The membrane should maintain water proof but this may be a mold growth site. It would be better if less voids at all in the thinset.
I agree and sometimes it is what it is in construction to get the job done right. If there was enough mortar there in the first place there would be no voids to worry about.
hard to believe 25 years exp and you dont see an issue here ,,fist the shelf should always go in first with the wall and side piece sitting on top of shelf eliminating an issue ,,second now you have water running off the shelf then it hits the seam /joint where tile and metal meet creating another issue ,,and this is the big one cause water will just sit on that grout joint break,, hello !!!!

i saw on the schuter site they sell corner inserts to connect the pieces, either as inside or outside corners. but it looks like the miter is a good look and not too tough to pull off.

Using a miter saw to cut schluter trim seems like a very good idea. On my niches i usually install the bottom tile first and then the rest,i believe it seals it better,bottom tile then back one,sides and top

Nice job. I just did one like this using a marble pencil tile as the border. It looks nice but sort of a Pia to install. They break really easy and they're around $12 each.

Those grout lines along side the profiles are perfect. When using ceramic tile, the factory adhesive has a slight lower profile than the cut edge. It’s easy enough to use all factory edges inside the niche, but when doing a running bond pattern on the shower walls you will have the thicker cut and fed and possibly the factory edges along the same piece of profile. How do you make that look acceptable?

extremely clean. love it! just wondering though about the miter joints of the rondek (not sure how to spell it) after install. I always use my yellow wedges form homedepot to space any niche profile edging so i can get some grout in there to prevent a dry bond where water could slowly seep in. Maybe you just silicone the joints ? let me know because if your confident in just sealing it afterwards with silicon then i will likely do the same in the future because of how clean it looks. i know also that it doesnt mater as much with everything topically water proofed either... but just an observation :)

For the flow of water you install the inside bottom shelf first an after the back of the niche and the two side finish with the top inside
indeed ,,you and like two other people got it right,,,that is the right way,,and a flat grout joint is never a good idea ,,water needs to run off uninterrupted ,,

@@Z-Ack These guys are talking about the bottom tile piece/shelf installed first, then back, etc.. But the tile should always be just slightly above the top of the trim. Looks/feels better and won’t hold water.
It might be over-kill, but I use a thin bead of silicone on the front edge of the shelf against the trim so there is no possibility of water going down that way.

I wish I could show you a couple photos of the bad job my tiler did on the niche and the shower floor. The shower floor has to all come out, the metal AND tiles around the niche and window all have to be removed. Is there somewhere I can go in Toronto to have them cut me the right size in the schluter metal edging? How can I post photos on here? Thanks Mary

Mary Kane Any Tile store can cut tile for you if you give them the measurements. Home Depot and Lowe’s can as well but I would recommend going to an actual tile store over them to cut it.

It looks nice but .... I pretty much do it the same way but set the bottom tile first with 1/8 shim under the bask for forward pitch. Then put the back it. I personally want the water to shed downhill. Ur way there is a chance water can get in the back edge on bottom edge ... each their own ... just sharing. Thanks

How would you grout that metal corner to metal corner? Do you leave an equal amount of space for grout or clear caulk?

Niche job!
Very crisp work. Use razor blades as spacers, to maintain requirements at change of plane. Also can use wedge spacers + gorilla tape when adjusting posture of each inside panel of niche. Thinset holds air, so we recommend the use of a rubber mallet to knock the air pockets. Otherwise your trim and tile can sink overnight.

I wonder how you would handle the spacing if you had a smaller niche (like 4” high x12”! Wide) right below the larger one.
Would like to give a Like to it, As 16 year aluminum tile trim manufacturer, would like to give sugguestion trim's packing would be best with transparent protective film on the trim surface, peel of the film afteer installation. More better on the trim surface itself

So, this is s how i was going to do my niche, but all the videos I see, everyone puts the metal trim inside the niche, notnon the edges of the wall tiles....I think your method makes more sense. Are they both the right way??? Or is one way better than the other??

Overall fine job and detail but I would lay bottom of the niche first and then the back so water always runs over tile rather than contacting corner joint if grout ever fails.

Just install bottom piece last with fall and no need to taper side cuts.
Don’t you want the water that runs down the side to fall more-so onto the surface of the bottom tile and then out, rather than down into a grouted tile gap? Doing the bottom first would put the grouted tile gap on the side instead. Or does it not matter?
I wouldn't grout it ,would silicone seal all perimeters ,

@@CalleyyyC no problems just what I found has worked best long term.
Ive always installed the bottom first, set the back in next then the sides and top that way everything sits on top of that bottom tile.. besides a pitch as small as what is needed for water roll out is like what 3°... so an angle grinder with a tile cutoff wheel works fine and can clean it up with onr of those knife sharpening stones for tile... my only concern for this video would be trying to set the bottom tile where its proud of the little lip thing he put on because i would imaging the tile would end up inside of that piece and just pooling up water because of that lip...
Have always set the trim into the grout and then set the tile. This method seems to push the grout out of the way allowing water infiltration and a leak if you don't grout it absolutely water tight. Nice job though.
