This movie is so under-rated. It's original, genius, touching, and sublime. It's a deep and timeless fable, silly at times, and in my opinion should have won multiple awards. The soundtrack is pure gold.
This is one of those rare film soundtracks that is a true work of art. Incredibly, heart achingly beautiful. They don't make music, or films, like this anymore.
I stayed home tonight, and for some reason, really wanted to watch the scene where Joe goes into the luggage shop - especially for the acting by Barry McGovern, as the salesman. He kills me, every time he says the lines "Very exciting. As a luggage problem." and "May you live to be a thousand years old, sir." Then I started listening to the soundtrack, which I had never done before, from beginning to end. It's so beautiful, I ended up in tears.
This Movie is easily one of my top ten favorite movies of all time. To be honest the first time I saw it in a theater as a new release I wasn't exactly thrilled with it, I suspect because it was not what I was expecting. To call this movie a ROMCOM is doing it a great disservice. This story has unexpected depth that I dare say most people don't get. I didn't the first time I saw it. How many people are walking around with a brain cloud. Patricia (Meg Ryan) says, "My father says that almost the whole world is asleep. Everybody you know. Everybody you see. Everybody you talk to. He says that only a few people are awake and they live in a state of constant total amazement." This is profound. Thank you, Joel Michael! Putting this lovely music together is a gift to those who find it.
Did you notice the "lightning bolt shape" motif, that appears onscreen in 4 or 5 different places throughout the movie? (In the ACHI logo, in the crack in the wall in Joe's apartment, in the lightning bolt striking the ship, and in the procession of torches up the side of the volcano.)
This movie just punched me in the soul and made me laugh, the very first time I saw it. I think I was 21 years old. I truly think this movie (in as much as a movie can do such things) helped shape who I am, as a man and as a human being.
@@rogermwilcox Oh absolutely! I think that was deliberate. wink wink BTW apropos of nothing, another movie I have watched countless times is Moonstruck. Great sound track and seems to center me when I watch it.
@@gablesguitars That's awesome! There certainly is humor in this movie along with the deeper message. Moonstruck is another favorite of mine. Great music and beautiful family dynamic. I suppose I was around 24 when I saw it in the theater of all places! I've owned this movie on VHS and DVD. I watch it when I am feeling adrift.
Is, and forever will be.. My go to movie when life kicks me in the teeth.. Just reminds me that so much more is possible if we just believe people, Can become decent and love one another. So much hate and rage in the he world these days, so sad.
Read "Wild at Heart" by John Eldridge . when I saw the birth of my child 29 years ago I recognized the blessings of Gods wonder and love for me and all mankind. Stay well, decent friend .
Why is my heart marooned without you The sun goes down My dreams begin their refrain I call to whatever holds you My beloved I wait and I wait Why is my heart marooned without you A tiny light upon the sea My heart is so afraid You have broken away Tell me, darling, I pray You will come to me soon
I bought this movie cassette and listened to it over and over at the credits. I investigated Mr. Delarue. Gorgeous music and lyrics. 😢😮🎉😊 thank you for posting this
The movie was okay and I loved it but this music is blockbuster-worthy and the movie itself is way outclassed. In particular the part starting at around 32:00 is mesmerizing.
00:00 Once Upon A Time 00:21 Dinner With DeDe 02:25 Love Theme 03:36 Joe Alone 04:03 Graynamores Pitch 06:01 I'll Do It 07:21 New York 07:54 To The Hotel 08:43 To The Ship 11:25 History of the Waponis 12:04 Pat Tells Joe 14:31 The Storm and the Rescue 23:44 Hava Nagila and when Johnny Comes Marching Home 25:18 I've Got To Go 28:48 Explosion and in the Water 30:52 They Sail Away 32:02 End Credits
When talking about this movie I say it is more of a parable about living and dying, work, time, and money. Much more accurate than calling it a RomCom.
If you like this beautiful heartfelt theme then try 'Steel Magnolias" Same composer . Pure musical poetry the ending credit closing overture is a master work of beauty , So tender , lullaby like, peaceful ,play it for your little child to give him rest while his Father in heaven protects him and all his beloved children. It will also comfort the weary heart of mothers everywhere on this coming blessed Mothers Day 2023
I'm 77 and can't get enough of this movie and soundtrack. If they ever get boring, just bury me out on the lone prarie.
Same. I think this film is a masterpiece.

Genuinely one of the most underrated soundtracks in cinematic history.

ONE OF THE BEST FILMS EVER MADE WITH AN AMAZING SOUNDTRACK !!!
Definitely one of MY all-time favorites.
Me too
When I ponder life it brings me to the magnificent blessing that I was gifted by Him with the love of music . Thanks be to the Father
Genius in disguise...my heart breaks then becomes renewed...listen Carefully gently, quietly.
Why is my heart marooned without you?
Why is my heart marooned without you
The sun goes down
My dreams begin their refrain
I call to whatever holds you
My beloved
I wait and I wait
Why is my heart marooned without you
A tiny light upon the sea
My heart is so afraid
You have broken away
Tell me, darling, I pray
You will come to me soon
Such an amazing film and score, and the last filmmusic project from the late great George Delerue.
"It's always gonna be something with you, isn't it Joe?"
A sleeper of a sound track . Stunningly beautiful fantasy musical compliments this finding of the hearts emptiness through anothers love..... forever
This and How To Train Your Dragon are my two favourite films.
Both have great scores, and an underdog who triumphs.
Fantastic! Thanks for posting.

This was a Wes Anderson movie before there were Wes Anderson movies.
