    THANK YOU!!! I've never seen this drafting business. For forty years, I've hacked away at a Kenmore machine that belonged to my mother, and I had no idea that there is a way to do this that is simple, elegant, and logical. What's more amazing is that I will be able to do it using stuff I already have: tissue paper from CVS, a bedsheet retrieved from my donate pile, a tape measure, and a good pair of scissors. I had to look up 'balancing' a pattern--also brilliant! It explains why I looked like such a ragamuffin in the 80s, and not so much like Madonna or Cyndi Lauper. My plans now include making a SHARP pair of britches! Brava!

    This process requires an enormous amount of patience and dedication. Thank you for sharing your journey towards “Fit-Ness”. It was much more complex compared to other tutorials I’ve watched because it included your evaluation of the fit on camera and the discussion of your findings. This aspect is extremely helpful to viewers because it explains each area that does not fit properly and the reasons why the fit is “off”. I found this very helpful. Without this portion of the video, we are left with a pattern block that theoretically looks great on paper but fails once executed evidenced by analyzing where the fit falls short. In other videos viewers assume that after the block is complete on paper, the fit must be perfect. I think showing the pants sewn and modelled is just as important as taking measurements and translating them into a block. This video was technically well done. The verbal description of the entire process was equally well done. I will definitely attempt to make a pants pattern block using this video as my guide. Thanks again for a very thorough tutorial which was informative as well as enjoyable. Bravo!

  • @LydiaNaomi
    @LydiaNaomi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +54

    CROTCH EXTENSION CLARIFICATION:
    The front extension is 1/16 of your entire hip girth. So if your hip is 40, divide 40 by 16 and that is how much your have to add for the front crotch extension.
    The back extension is 1/8 of your entire hip girth so, again, if your full hip girth is 40, divide 40 by 8 and that is your back crotch extension.
    It is correct in the video if you ignore the additional note I put on the screen in orange letters.
    Just remember that we are working with one side of the front hip and one side of the back hip, and for the front extension you would find a 1/4 of the front width of your draft and add that as the extension. For the back you would find 1/2 of the front width of your draft and add that as the back extension. Its the same thing as above just may be more confusing to some.

    Ive seen so many pant tutoriaks and I keep coming back to this video coz it covers everything. very very perfect and professional. I've a question.. If someone don't wear their pants on waist, and prefer a little bit lower, do I still have to draft it from waist?

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you could draft from lower but it's easier I think, to draft from the waist then just measure down on each line however much you want to lower the waist. That's what I do ☺️

    This was really detailed and I'm going to try drafting this. The place where I'm currently learning, keeps front and back the same and i know from just looking at existing pants that the crotch length fr front and back has to be diff, so I'll try this.
    I wanted to know whether adding a waistband (abt 1.5 inches) affects this drafting. Shld we measure crotch length from top of waistband or excluding it.

      The front and the back have a straight line going down the middle of the leg and you have distances from there.
      The crotch is like a circle but the "middle part" is brought toward the front. So that "dip" you see, it connects into a half circle and goes under the crotch.
      Then you need darts, usually mid way in front and back to gather fabric to accommodate the shape from the wide hips to the waist.
      It's harder to explain than understand. It's really simple.

    Thanks for the very detailed tutorial. I appreciated that you showed how to measure the body and the adjustments you made. I look forward to your final adjustment video.
    I tried your instructions. It was mostly clear, except for two areas, that I wasn't sure about.
    1) at the point where you extended the crotch line: I misunderstood 1/2 back & 1/4 front hip measurement, thinking it was the entire front/back measurement. I eventually realized it was 1/2 the back block & quarter the front block.
    2.) the grain line: the instructions AB & BC divided by 1/4" didn't look correct, to me. I didn't know what to do, so I went based on your demonstration; which seemed more like 1/2 AB/BC.
    Sorry for the long message. Let me know if I am wrong. Thanks much

    wonderful video, I am currently in the process of making pantalons that can accommodate suspenders. the modern clothing retailers within my reach skip the bit between the waist and the hips (I think because its cheaper and men don't know how comfortable suspenders are). I think I need to alter a few things to this method (I need excess width for suspenders) but this video taught me many things. should result in a cleaner silhouette than altering an oversized pair by lowering the crotch(gaining height of the band/length of the rise).
    any recommendations on things that I should do different than the method in this video as I am making this for trousers worn by man?

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      so if I am understanding correctly you want a higher waist pant for suspenders? I think maybe mens trousers have less of a deep dart on the waist, it just all depends on your measurements. If you follow this according to your measurements you should be ok :)

      You may have got my extension confused. I need to correct that in the video.

    Hi Lydia! Thanks for this really helpful video. I'm finding that when I add a quarter of my waist girth to my dart intake, and then position it 3/4" from the CB, the end of my back waist goes past the center line of the rectangle. I've double-checked all my measurements but everything seems to be right... Have I done something wrong, or do I need to adjust the rectangle because of my waist-hip proportion? Thanks!

    When do you recommend walking the pattern/block” - before your first muslin or after all the muslin/samples you’ve tweaked “to perfection”?

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Walk it right away I would say, or at least before your final sample, but right after you draft, its best so that you don't have to worry, and walk it every time you make adjustments that could mess with the seams matching ☺️

    Hi! Thank you for sharing this! I have a question, at 3:52, there's a yellow line at the very right of the Back "square", next to the 2 darts, that moves more towards the center line. I think it happens the same at the front. Why is this? How many inches it is supposed to be moved? I hope this makes sense 😳 thank you!!

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I see exactly what you are saying. It's because I only added the back waist amount without the 2" then added it when I added the darts in. That was unnecessarily unclear. Sorry about that!

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When drafting you do not add seam allowance until you are ready to cut out the pattern. And you never add seam allowance to blocks since they are used to create other patterns. You only add seam allowance to a block if you are sewing up a fit sample like I did. Seam allowance messes with fit it is only for sewing and not pattern drafting.
