I live in Winchester Va. That is where Group 44 was from. Maybe a half of a mile from the 44 shop was the Winchester Speedway a 3/8's mile dirt track. There are some pics out there of these cars on dirt there. From what I heard they would of been very dominant with the very best dirt Late Model cars of the day.
I saw the 1988 Trans-Am race at Mid-Ohio in person. It rained the entire race. Stuck won, but coming off of a caution with 10 laps to go, Hurley Haywood put in the drive of the day. As the field took the green, he was just exiting the pits a quarter lap behind everyone. When the race ended, he finished 3rd. The Audis could gain 2-4 car lengths on every competitor in every corner in the rain. It was cold and dreary that day, but a GREAT day to cheer on Audi!
When they penalized the Audi's for coming up with a superior concept, it showed again as in other racing series happened, instead of making other teams be innovative, they cater to whining. Those are the main reasons that turned me totally off professional auto acing.
The reason for that (love it or hate it) is that they want a close competition that makes fans want to show up. If the end is predictable, then fans lose interest. It can be argued that they just want it to be enjoyable for fans, but ultimately a popular race series makes more money for those who run it.
BooHoo, can't keep up? Innovation is what they lacked! The other teams cried foul and now everything form Nascar to Formula 1 are so regulated that it is a vocation, rather than a sport. Piss On It.
Probably because Audis AWD was a new way of doing things, that didn't require the engine to sit on top of the separate diff housing, but instead had it integrated in the gearbox. Copying the concept would take way longer than one season of racing, so the Audis would still be winning for several more years.
That's nothing new. The turbine car at Indy. The Daytona Chargers and Superbirds in NASCAR. It's not about competition, it's about entertainment. But think about it. How fair is the 'competition' when you have RWD cars road racing against 4WD? It seems like those are different classes of race car.
This is why I love Audi. I grew up watching them race and shoot flames from the exhaust. 5Banger for life!!!

that 80ies Sound is awesome
Especially the commentator: " With the others struggling to just stay on the rain slicked track, Stuck enjoys a Sunday drive..."
Perfect
When I go to Summit Point now it's hard to believe that IMSA used to race there...

they cant win so they have to handicap the audi and they still lose .where were your "awesome "cars back then 'murica? 😂😂😂😂
They gave it 100 HP in Germany ( DTM ) more although it had the advantage of quarto. Audi ( that belongs to VW has a history of cheating ) Nox ?
@@schwanzelstock1071 What´s quarto?
