    I sold this car after 6 years and 165,000 miles. This was when the clutch gave out- which is excellent- and I had zero other problems. Fords are very reliable if you take care of them (well the manual transmission ones at least).

    I have a 2012 SE sedan and I'm happy with it. I'm 6 feet tall with long legs and I have plenty of leg room. It's also good in the snow. The traction control really works well and with the snow that the St. Louis area has had lately, it's snow-handling skills have been put to the test.

    Thank Ford for making a great car. After 8 years and 100k it is still going strong unlike the Hyundai elantra a family member owned which has had multiple problems including the front axle being removed which was under warranty but who wants to spend that kind of money for a car only to have the axle removed.

    It amazes me how good fuel mileage is with today's smooth and powerful engines. When the government mandated higher fuel economy the car makers actually answered without much sacrifice. Props to engineers.

    We have a 2012 Focus SFE, and we love it. We have averaged 43 mpg on trips, and the SFE package was worth the money. My wife used to drive an average of 90 miles per day, and it has that transmission that so many folks complain about. Yes, our car had the software update, and that quelled the clutch shudder. It needed a transmission control module, engine timing cover, valve cover gasket, and had a transmission leak at 99,000 miles (new clutches were installed). Ford’s extended warranty paid for all of these, and it’s been a fine car. If customers only knew how the transmission works, for it’s a fun car to drive, and the fuel mileage is excellent. We would buy another! It’s sad that the SFE wasn’t available very much, and I blame the dealers for not ordering this model and keeping it in stock. You buy a compact car to commute and get excellent fuel mileage, and this one does it well.

    I love our 2017 Ford Focus SEL Sedan in Oxford White. Our focus is fully loaded except the cold weather package and has voice activated navigation as a 795.00 option and more!! I have several 0-60 on this car and the engine is great. This car is fun to drive and it’s pretty quick off the line for 160 hp.

    2012 focus se here. Automatic with 220k miles. Trans has shuddered, sputtered, and clunked since 50k miles. Ford TSB says to peg it through the gears multiple times and that seems to quell the shudder for a bit. If it's starting to hard shift, try the TSB routine and just drive it generally harder/more aggressive and you'll get more miles out of these usually.

  • @someguywithaford
    @someguywithaford ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I highly recommend if you’re considering a Focus, get one with select shift. If you shift as soon as possible every gear, and hold high gears up hills, rediculous fuel economy is possible. I often get 44 mpg on the highway, and I just have a regular SE with the sport appearance package. Before I put a more aggressive grille on it though, I was getting 47 mpg on the highway, and on a road where coasting is possible, it returned with 53 mpg. It’s a little fuel economy monster. The engine is reliable too. The only problem is the transmission, the PowerShift is not well designed.

    My 2017 SEL auto got up to 47mpg on the highway when driven around 50-60, how ever, the transmission behaves much better at speeds of 70mph+
    What I found is that the DCT found in this vehicle is very clunky when driven at an engine rpm of 2,000 or less.
    However, if you keep the RPMs above 2k, she’ll shift as smooth as butter.
    You just have to use the + and - button on the gear shift to control the transmission better

    I had a 2013 Focus S 5 spd with the upgraded infotainment display. I was really disappointed it did not include cruise control. Other than that is was a really nice driving car. 160hp really felt more powerful than it was. I hardly ever see these on the road anymore. They weren’t cared for and the automatic was known for odd shifting behavior.

    If the rear discs are not vented, they generally don't have a significant advantage over rear drum brakes.
    It's more of a hype thing really, since most high performance sport cars use disc brakes.
    Today's rear drum brakes have vastly improved over the years.

    Just wanted to chime in since so many people like to diss the focus - as an owner, I can tell you that I usually get around 30 Mpg average around town and 38 when on highways. Plus it's got the sporty titanium suspension package. The myford touch system is not the most responsive touchscreen, but works seamlessly with my iPhone for music and calls the instant my car turns on.

    @Intechdude300 I wanted the Kona Blue when I ordered my Focus a couple weeks ago. It was discontinued because of the tsunami in Japan. It has been replaced by Sonic Blue. Actually its a better blue than Kona because in different light levels it take on different shades of blue. Ranging from blue to green to purple. I did not go for the hatch because I didn't like rear lights.

  • @coolerdude44

    i don't understand your argument. i'm 19, and my car is breaking down so i'm looking to lease a car in this class. i've narrowed it down to the focus and the gti (of course the gti is more expensive) because they're practical, small, look good, and get fantastic fuel economy. however, the reason those two stand out is BECAUSE they're driver oriented.
    why would i want a car that's not driver oriented? that's like buying a TV which isn't viewer oriented, or a meal which doesn't taste good.

    The Focus has the best styling in the compact car segment ... the only thing is I can't see out the front of the hood when parking, which might result in unwanted scratches to the bumper ...

  • @coolerdude44
    @coolerdude44 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    you're completely missing my point... i'm not saying disregard everything and buy a porsche boxster. the focus has a large trunk, good fuel economy, only car in the class to have a DSG instead of automatic, and has the best interior, AND offers good value... on top of having the best driving dynamics, which is the point of a car to begin with.

    I can't dispute that it's a good looking car, but as an owner of 2012 since it was a year old I find myself disappointed. Been to the dealer 5 times for the dual clutch. Out of warranty now and in need of another replacement. It has the turning radius of a bus! No legroom in the back if you're a driver over 6 feet. Useless fold-down seats because they don't fold anywhere near flat. I have the Titanium version. I do like the park assist and rear camera.

    This car feels like it could have been a good car, but the transmission is HORRIBLE. It never feels like it is shifting correctly. It takes too much throttle to initiate a down-shift, and too long to put itself back in gear, then when it does put itself back in gear, it just neutral-drops itself into gear. Using the select-shift significantly helps, but why not just get the manual if you have to use that all the time? I noticed a 2 MPG increase when using the select shifter on my daily commute.

    @justthebestgolfer...go down a couple of comments, you started to talk about the 2013 escape. You were talking about the focus then went with the escape. The escape was proven to be the manufactures fault, not ford, what did ford do? Gave rentals to every customer while they fixed it, I never heard of an automaker that does that. Lastly, read on the elantra a little more, a man made a big complaint that he couldn't even get over 20 mpg after driving 30,000 miles.

    Hang on; it may largely be designed in Germany, but the team of Engineers was multicultural, from all around the world. Chief Engineer Jim Hughes is an American, for instance. That just goes to show how we can all benefit from positive international relations, acceptance, diversity, and globalization.
    Anyways, other than that, very good review. And as far as buyers' opinion, I absolutely love my titanium hatchback. Incredible car. And yes, it's 7.6 sec to 60mph w/ the "hidden" launch control.

  • @coolerdude44
    @coolerdude44 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    i've driven both the focus and the elantra, and i was woefully disappointed by the latter. that's fine that you don't want to race people, but the elantra didn't even present adequate acceleration, and the ride and handling of the focus was a million times better than the elantra. i actually think it might have better steering than the aforementioned gti.
    like i said, there's a difference between street racing everyone and buying a car that's actually good at driving.

    Things like that are terribly dangerous!

  • @palmviewlobos15
    @palmviewlobos15 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @justthebestgolfer...is that why hyundai is being sued for false advertisement on their gas mileage ratings on the elantra? Recalls on the escape were 10,000 trucks. What about the 220,000 hyundai sonata's recalled for the air bag problem? Hyundai beats around the bush and hides their problems, why is it that many sonata owners are complaining of the car steering to the left? The only reason Ford dropped in reliability was mainly because of the ford mytouch system was to complicated for people.

      because there are higher power losses which rear wheel drive. and the focus is a little under rated. I beats BRZs and genesis 2.0ts with my lightly modded focus se sometimes. I do 0-60 in 7 sec flat consistantly.

    Yeah thats why the new fusion is the eye candy right? I never stated the escape was a truck, now did I? I know what it is. Im talking about the 2012 and 2013 sonata, READ slowly. Trust me alot of people will complain about road noise in a compact car. That one guy didnt have a lemon, it was alot of people. The reason he made cover was because he was a loyal hyundai customer who stated "I will never buy another hyundai again."

    Like you were said, early date troubles, like in Focus III ;) But troubles in Focus won't kill you or your family.
    You didn't had troubles with steering wheel, that's good. But they might happen :(

    I have the 2011 Focus, like that body better but the 2012 features and interior blow '11 away.

    Motorweek is usually good with their reviews. They left out several things. The seating position is for people with long arms and short legs. The seat is uncomfortable on long trips the lower lumber area is positioned in a way that you have to lean the seat back to feel comfortable but by that time you are too far back for the steering wheel. The transmission is awful. During brisk acceleration it jerks and is unstable. There are electronic glitches. Power windows dome lights center media phone

    How many times do I have to tell U about those Hyundai's R lemon cars???
    I have seen them already & I am only talking about the NEW 2012 Hyundai & Kias..lol

    @xoquixxoqafxo Car and Driver tested and automatic and got the exact same 0-60, but then tested another one a few months later and got 8.1. They didn't explain why the discrepancy in numbers but did take note of it. I guess those who get a Focus with an auto will either be lucky or not so lucky, but still have a pretty solid car.

    I have a 2015 Focus Titanium and I get 26-39. My actual gas mileage is 43 mpg, great vehicle! And the transmission is a dual clutch automated manual not an automatic. Pretty much a manual shifted by a computer, do the research.

      I have a '16 ST - it is a manual. Yours is an automatic. Stop kidding yourself.

    • @Inknov83d
      @Inknov83d 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +gypsykingg it's a dual clutch manual automatic. in theory it technically is a manual transmission.

    • @gypsykingg
      @gypsykingg 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +wtfruthinking1986 Not in the least bit. A manual must have a driver operated clutch (foot pedal) and a driver operated gear selector (stick shifter).

      +gypsykingg I know what a manual gearbox is I've been driving an 18-wheeler for 12 years.

      @gypsykingg 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +wtfruthinking1986 Okay then, now that we've established that - this is not a manual transmission, it's an automatic

    Ford Focus: Best safety pick (Euroncap)
    Euroncap: first non premiun car winning two advanced safety awards.
    The Elantra is a nice car, but i pick the focus any day of the week because I like a driver´s car , specially if this is top safe, full of tech and good looking

      The Elantra did very poorly in crash tests until the most recent version.
