There's no way Ernie didn't get a big shit eating grin on his face the first time he held a Recon 1. Also, to close one hand, keep your finger in the choil, disengage the lock and give it a shake. The exposed tang will always hit that finger and you'll never get cut.
I don't care for the grind on the Emerson Blade; chisel grinds are ugly and cheap looking to me... Also, I don't like thin and weak Liner-Locks; they aren't strong and wear out fast... The CS Tri-Ad Lock is a much better lock than any Liner-Lock, maybe the best folder lock, period... Emerson's are way over priced, too... I can open and close all of my Tri-Ad's easily with one hand; I don't know what you're talking about there... The good points about the Emerson are, it's made in the US, the coating is better, the blade steel is better, and it has the Emerson Wave feature. That being said, Japanese AUS 8A, the way CS treats it, is a very good mid-grade steel that's very easy to maintain and takes a razor edge. So, the only thing that I like better about the Emerson is the Wave feature. But, there are other CS Folders with a Wave feature... Now, the 2015 Recon 1 comes with better American CTS-XHP steel. And, is still less expensive by a great margin than the Emerson. I'll take a Tri-Ad Recon 1 over the Emerson all day long. I don't invest in weak Liner Lock Knives; I don't trust them in a "Tactical" situation. Peace, Stiletto :)
To each his own, but I prefer the Emerson design, especially having learned more about the reputation of the chisel design blade. It's a very strong design, and the knife is built for hard use. They're tough.
I like Erie and went through my Emerson phase, amassing about 20 of his knives over the years. Here we are in 2020, I believe I am past that and with Cold Steel stepping up their game with nicer steels and the Tri-Ad lock, I feel you get more for your money with Cold Steel. Emerson is going to have to move past the 90s.
I get what you are saying. I have a few lock backs that you can close that way. I just think you can get into trouble if you get used to doing it, then try it on one where you cannot, like the spartan, and get a nasty cut.
whats the actual model of the Emerson? I see that they make A LOT of different CQC 7 models, but I'm really only interested in the CQC 7 Karambit and this one that's in the video. Thanks!
That comparison makes perfect sense to me. I used to edc a cqc7 as my defensive blade and a cs large tanto voyager as my beater (back before they came out with thr recon). Along the lines of inexpensive heavy duty knives do you have any experience with the Bad Blood line?
In my experience (I have many knives and tools made in many different places), my US-produced items are actually on par with if not worse than China in regards to quality control. The best quality control I have experienced comes from Taiwan and Japan. The worst in my experience has been South Africa.
I would agree if the Recon was made in the US. Hard to compair the two. Emersons are made mostly by hand, in a US shop, by US people. CS outsources to Taiwan where they are mass produced by machines. Some people care about that, some do not. But it's hard to make a direct comparison.
Yes. Non-Ferrous stainless steel does exist. Some stainless steels are magnetic: those whose atomic arrangement is in a body centered cubic or body centered tetragonal orientation can be strongly ferromagnetic. The stainless steel in your sink is usually in a face centered cubic orientation, and it isn't ferromagnetic.
The cool thing is, you can buy the cold steel, and get a feel if you like that size of tanto tactical blade. If you do, you can graduate to the Emerson for the quality step up. I sometimes wish cold steel would offer a slightly higher end line of some of their more popular knives. I'd like to have the Recon 1 or American Lawman in s30v or 154cm or something more premium.
Carter. You should check out your piece and know it a tad better before doing a video on it. The Recon is super simple to close one handed. I can't remember the last time I used two hands to close it because it's not needed. Put your finger in the top cutout position and hit the lock. Lynne made it so it'll drop straight down on your finger where the blade is not sharpened. No need to use two hands guy. Having said all that. I have both blades and enjoy them both but you just have to give the nod to The7 - it's kinda common sense but the Recon is no doubt hard use. Nice video.
Nice video. I edc a cold steel xl voyageer and a medium voyager from time to time and once you get used to them they are completly one handed. With the XL, once you grease it as soon as you push in the lock the blade drops. And for the Medium, just a quick push on your leg and drop it in the pocket. you can close them and have them in my pockete just as fast as a liner look once they break in and you get used to it.
I personally am not too much into skulls. Cold Steel has some samurai & swords t-shirts. Most Cold Steel stuff is made in Taiwan. And Taiwan is a pretty cool country.
My dream knife would be an Emerson Commander with wave feature, a Tri-ad locking system, Spyderco Quality control and made in the USA!! I would throw my money at them all day long lol... Seriously, Demko needs to take his tri-ad lock and join up with a company that doesn't exploit taiwan or china. I would take pride in buying cold steel if I saw USA on it, or germany or italy or japan. (Basically any country that is getting fair wages).
If I upload them directly to TH-cam they are fine in Chrome. It's only when I have to use my editing software (it converts the file to a .wmv file) that Chrome has a problem
Eu concordo!
Personally, I would see no reason to by the Emerson when the Recon Tanto exists, *except* for the wave feature. The Recon Tanto has a stronger lock, what appears to be better ergonomics (and a small sub hilt), a conventional v-grind, a tanto point that actually reinforces the tip (swedges make tantos pointless except for snap cuts), less weight, and it's much, much cheaper.
The Recon 1 is 1 handed closing for me. I just let the blade drop down while my index finger is still in the finger choil. The non sharp part of the blade touches the finger. Then I just rotate finger out and close. I do the same with almost all lockback type knives.
I want that CS Recon1 if you ever decide to get rid of it. I really like the stone wash job you did on it. It makes it a collector's XIUXIU1313 item. Good comparison, blue collar versus white collar folders. I am a blue collar kind of guy. Although I thik that Emerson is quite a folder.
Too bad Emerson is using the flimsy liner lock on such an expensive knife. That's the same type of locking system used on the itty bitty Leak and Chive knives. Those two companies should come to some sort of agreement saying we'll trade the use of the Wave feature for the use of the Tri-Ad lock.
Man, now I kind of want to try and get a cold steel with the normal finish and just cerakote it myself. But I'm too poor and lazy to do that anytime soon.
Huh? Emerson's dummy soft/horrible heat treat for the steel type 154CM has worse edge retention than Cold Steel's AUS8A. Tell Ernie to rethink his heat treat process, because Emersons are the aldente pasta of the knife world.
+Dert McGert It's all because Emerson knives are more sharp pry bars and weapons than edc knives. Ernest said that these knives are very durable for break and they need to be sharp just for while, if it's dull you can sharp it with even random stone from river. Simple specialized tools, nice designs but they're of course overpriced. Why? I think it's because too much hype about Navy Seals and history of tactical knife. Ernest Emerson is not only simple knifemaker/designer. He's like pop star in knife world, especially for crazy mall ninja weekend keyboard warriors who always wanted to be Navy Seals but they'll never be in military because of something, fat for example [Yeah, I'm rude, but I don't give damn penny about that]. So they can have knife from guy who made knives for Navy Seals Team Six. Such tactical, such elite, such famous. Wow. Making tactical knives is good business especially in USA.
+Michał O meh. I have this Recon 1 in XHP, w/ a DLC coating. $40 on the 2ndary market. I'd take the CS over the Emerson, factoring in that Price, Steel, Edge Retention, Weight, and Strength goes to the Recon 1.
Michał O I just picked up the Talwar in XHP off a guy on Blade Forums for $65 shipped NIB! Damned nice knife. Gave it to the wife so she can wrap it for me, and stick it under the tree-lol
that lock on the emerson looks weak as fuck. it only comes over 2mm if that.. id take the cheaper and most abuse taking recon 1. I mean really.. 60-70 vs 130 and you might lose a finger. im a novice though so I could be totally wrong because ive never really looked up emerson, but that lock looks like itd break with 200lbs of preasure.. again I might be wrong but my common sense and what ive deducted from the video tells me the cold steel is waaaaay stronger. I saw cold steel put their blade in a vice and a 400lb guy the size of big black comes and stands on the handle and it doesn't snap closed or break. so..... COLD STEEL
There's no way Ernie didn't get a big shit eating grin on his face the first time he held a Recon 1. Also, to close one hand, keep your finger in the choil, disengage the lock and give it a shake. The exposed tang will always hit that finger and you'll never get cut.

It can't be put to too hard of use with the liner lock.
Put on a snaggle tooth and it whoops the emmerson
Hes just a pour boy from a pour family. Extra sour..

Hard use but chose a liner lock ?
Axis lock is Benchmade. Triad lock is Demko/Cold Steel.
Emerson wave is faster opening, and easier to close than an auto. Love it! By the way, the Cold Steel TriAd IS a one hand closeable knife...
Just got my Emerson super roadhouse with the tan scales. What a beast of a knife! nice to see another knife crazy out there, keep it up
I get what you are saying. I have a few lock backs that you can close that way. I just think you can get into trouble if you get used to doing it, then try it on one where you cannot, like the spartan, and get a nasty cut.

hey, Im a lefty...I want to get a cqc-7. Can you open it left handed? ...because there is no cutout on that side.

I believe it is the Andrew Demko Tri-Ad lock not the Axis lock; interesting comparison as usual though, I always enjoy your vids.

But in today's market the cqc 7 is closer to$300 with shipping unless you find one on the secondary market and cs is $130 with cpm s35vn steel.
Cold Steel is better than Emerson in every conceivable way.
Not made in USA though. And CS doesn't have cool skull t-shirts
I personally am not too much into skulls. Cold Steel has some samurai & swords t-shirts. Most Cold Steel stuff is made in Taiwan. And Taiwan is a pretty cool country.
@@franciscoscaramanga589 I agree
I sent in a CS Black Rhino with a detent issue. They replaced the knife within two
weeks. As always. enjoyed the video.
i like the recon, but honestly love the cqc7!!!!!!!!!
Great video would enjoy more "mashups" like this

So I take it that you are on the waiting list at knife center, for the 4Max
Good luck paying $400-$500

Also one thing to note, many of the "newer" Emerson have that more aggressive G10 pattern
Andrew Demko's TriAd lock.
I noticed a few of them on amazon for under $30. I handled a pimped harbinger at Tuff Thumbz and really liked it.
I think both are great. I still like the Emerson much more. But I would not really knock either one.
I find it weird that the non locking liner is steel on the CQC-7. On my roadhouse, both sides are Titanium
I was just going to post this! I'm glad I checked the list first. 8-)
Thanks bro!
for one hand closing just keep your finger in the finger guard and let the blade drop, it wont cut you
Cool I like Emerson way more them cold steel though
Did I say Axis lock in this? Eff my life. I am fully aware of Mr. Demkos Tri-Ad lock contribution to Cold Steel
Did you say non-magnetic steel? Is there such a thing?
Not a CS fan myself. The cqc7 was my first nice knife!) hey I have you a shoutout in my latest vid, thanks for all the great emerson vids!)
Great looking recon1 you got there.

@@edged_mindset Do you trust the liner lock on that knife? Do you trust your fingers to it?
@@707SonomaComa nope. Especially on a tactical knife. If it was just a general use pocket knife it would be fine
Great comparison carter, and no I haven't found anything in this video to poke fun of. Lol
Accoring to Emerson, on all his models the non locking side is non magnetic steel.
Emerson offers a left-hand version of the CQC-7
Man, now I kind of want to try and get a cold steel with the normal finish and just cerakote it myself. But I'm too poor and lazy to do that anytime soon.
You can, but it's hard. The 7 is not a model well suited for left handed opening.
$130 here in Canada at my local bass pro shop . It's bullshit , I just recently snagged one off eBay for about $75
Personally I like my clip point recon 1 better than the tanto. But they're both cool knives.
It's like comparing a kitchen knife to a sword lol the recon 1 is a beast, wish they would put a better steel on it.
The video resolution is fixed.
the recon 1 handles are closer to the cqc 8
not a fair comparison... US made Emerson tactical... vs. foreign made Cold Steel knife?
macstyle01 shut up bih
Finally! I have accomplished JChadwell20 perfection! I can retire now LOL
The Emerson's I had was the qc I ever seen in a knife that's over $100 they are truly overrated.
cqc7 all the way ! you get what you pay for...
Emerson wins
