Today, I successfully replaced the L button circuitry with confidence thanks to this video. From it I learned the parts that I needed, the tools that I needed and what to expect without breaking anything 😅. Thank you.
My joy sticks on my joycons have had horrible drift for a while. Taking your advice about using an electronics duster fixed it right away. I was able to just get it from my local grocery store and save myself $80 in minutes. Thank you!
That video was very much helpful. Upon taking apart the controller, cleaning it up a bit, and replacing the L board (which looked OK, but still did not work), the controller works perfectly again. Looking forward to mote of your posts!
I was able to fix my ZL button with this video even though I’ve never had much experience with disassembling and reassembling certain tech. Thanks so so much!!!
I dropped mine on my wood floor and it landed directly on the ZL button. Unfortunately, it looks like I jammed the tiny button underneath the button. My husband fixed the L with this tutorial though, so thank you! ❤️ I'll be able to remap until I get my new joy cons in the mail. 😉
Thank you for the video. Bought a used joy-con, and only ZR wasn't working. So the reason was that the ribbon cable of that particular button was disconnected. it wasn't easy to connect it back because of the quite complex construction, but I did it! And to my surprise, there were a lot of missing screws. Thank you!
YES!!!!! I replaced my buttons with a kit from ExtremeRate and followed the video, but the video had no words. What got me was ZR not working because the video didnt make it clear that the ribbon head faces down and all the rest face up. Thank you so much for this comprehensive video to help so many people!!!
Thank you so much for a thorough, slow and detailed video. I was able to successfully replace the board and button for ZR on my sons switch! Happy 4 year old, Happy Mommy!
Hi. I replaced the ZR cable as the button on it had broken. This is a great “how to” video which I followed intently. I found that plugging the ribbon cable back in as described was almost impossible. I recommend that you insert the cable first then fold it around onto the tray. It is much easier to place the holding screw in than trying to insert the ribbon with all the tray attached to it. Other than that, perfect !
My nephew popped out his ZL button and lost it, so I bought a replacement ZL button and watching this vid helped me through most of it. Though I dont know if I missed the part where you put the button and spring back in or it wasnt in the video, I just winged it somehow. Still great help, specially in opening the joycon! Thank you!
Thanks for starting the tutorial with some basic troubleshooting steps. My L and R buttons are unresponsive for quite a while now. I’m actually ready to tear my joycons apart. But the ‘blow’ method worked so well. Sorry if I didn’t need to finish the video. But you have my Like 👍🏻.
Appreciate the explanation on the steps we should do before opening the joycons. My R button has been bugging me for a while because sometimes it's not registering or even just registered multiple times on single press. The paper method worked well!
At 5:55 I would recommend using a drop of alcohol instead to clean the screws. Isopropyl alcohol evaporates quickly and will not cause water damage to any delicate components. (Great vid though! Thanks :)
You are a god among men I thought my controller was broken forever but all it took to start magically working again was that paper trick. Thank you from the bottom of my heart
i want to thank you so much i was just changing my joycon out with extremerate and couldn't figure out why zr wasn't working at all i just went through your information and troubleshoot the problem thankfully its actually working!!! you're a huge help thank you so much for the tutorial on this video!!!
i am having trouble with the L trigger on my nintendo, because when i was playing on my nintendo i was trying to press the L trigger but it swings like if i go to an edge it swings that way and if i go to the other edge it does the same please help
By far the best video on this topic visually and narratively. Clear and concise, without wasting any time. Reattached my ZR ribbon cable and works great. Thanks!
A week or so ago my Switch dock fell of the shelf. Fortunately, the left JoyCon took the brunt of the impact, but it left the L, ZL, and - buttons completely stuck. Following this guide, and with a couple replacement parts from Amazon, I was able to restore the JoyCon to full functionality so that Link could get savagely beaten by a bokoblin.
Many thanks for this video! My L and ZL stop to work and I don't want to buy another one before try to fix first! This video guide me perfectly and I fix the problem safety
Damn thank you! I had issues with my ZL button. Nasically the piston components were deassembled and were stuck behind all the other components like the arrow buttons. I appreciate this procedure!!
Thank you so much! My l button stopped working entirely and found out that the keyswitch (?) wasn’t connected whatsoever and was broken. I swapped it out with one from a joycon I don’t use anymore but it kinda sucks that this happened after only six months.
You absolute legend! I could genuinely kiss you! My L button stopped working 2 months after purchase, I have a feeling it was dropped. I purchased a repair kit a while back to fix another joycons drift issue and noticed I had spare parts for left side too, my ribbon flex cable seemed to be the problem as after replacing it all works great again. Thank you so much!
Been struggling to get ZR put in after a joystick repair for hours just to realize I was plugging it jn upside down😅 In all seriousness though, great video, fixed my problem, 10/10
Thanks for the help I was gonna send to the nintendo repair cuz it was not responding correctly but when you said to blow in the button I tried and worked thanks a lot
i wont recommend using water into any CHARGED device, use rubber alcohol on the screws if they are hard to remove but do never use water(there is special non-conductive-water for stuff like this), removing the battery is a safety protocol since you can damage the components by touching them with your skin, very likely since this type of devices require a lot of handling around, and finally ribbon cables are very fragile yes, but nintendo likes to fold them something you should not do, so they are very likely to break even if you are being careful, replacing the whole slider would be a requirement if by sheer luck your ribbon cable was in the perfect line between broken and functional while being crushed between the battery and the outer shell so nintendo can save some cents on proper cables instead of cheap flexible pcbs.
Speaking of my tendo switch by my ZL button broken, you know how to fix it. Oh my tendo switch buttons are working except my buttons broken. I’m sad. Can you show me how to fix it please? Thank you.
Welp im fu- So i opened up my right joycon for stick problems and the r button piece just Fell out Like Im just screwed i dont have any sautering stuff
12:00 You don't have to push from the holes! It is better if you pull from the sides bit by bit, it will come off eventually, just don't pull too much, it might break
If Paper Doesn't Work, You Don't Have To Open Your Switch. (It Also Works Perfectly With Switch Lite) Step 1: Find A Hard Box, Like An iPhone Box. Step 2: Put Your Switch Vertically (If You Switch Is Not A Lite, Put The Joycons On) Step 3: Hit The Button With The Box With Medium Strength. (You Have To Hear A Loud Noise, But Make Sure You Control Your Force) Step 4: Repeat Until Fixed. Step 5: Play Mariokart And Get 8° Place Again
I do have a question, my left joycon, the ZL, it makes a clicking sound when I press it, but on the right one, the ZR, it doesn’t make a clicking sound but it still works- is there a way to fix that sound or no?
Hello! I tried everything to fix the r button and nothing worked so I ended up opening it to see what what the problem. Just after I removed the part that is attached to the battery the little button thing that I think is the trigger of the r button popped out. It’s completely deattached from the board and the contact is very loose. I tried securing it a bit with force but it works just the same as before. Is there any place where I can buy the board? Or should I try soldering? I have a bit of experience opening and replacing parts of joycons but nothing as far as soldering :/ please help. For the record mine also sometimes did the home button imput, if you have that problem too this might be your issue
Your video makes me so happy!!! My L button hasn't been working for several months, and I need it to play Zelda Breath of the Wild. Only 4 mins into your video, I finally got it to work again! Thank you for your help ❤
Would I be able to just replace the exterior button L and R pieces without having to mess with the electronics? My buttons are chipped and scraped from being dropped. I’m not very good with technology, so I’m looking around to see if I can get around replacing the entire controller ^^’
I recently replaced the joy con very gently of course but now my ribbon for the minus button will not go all the way under the gate and therefor isn’t working anymore :( can you help?
My L & R buttons on my joy cons always go out first. i can press down on them, but they don't register on screen. One time I was playing Minecraft, and then it had trouble registering the R button. Then, It only registered when i pressed in a certain, pretty much random way, and a minute after that it stopped working entirely.

same but L button needs a replacement
I ordered a joycon on ebay and the ZR button was dead on arrival. Followed your video and fixed it myself! EXCELLENT job. Keep up the good work :)

Button was stuck and was about to open the controller. Watched the first part and used air + pressing the buttons a bunch and it fixed it! Thanks!

Omg sameee that just happened to me yesterday
Thank you, helped me repair a special joycon of mine. Genuinely appreciate you posting this high quality of a video!
Rare helpful video. Went from least to most invasive solutions. Great job 👍🏾
I didn’t even know that you have to update joycons, I thought it was an automatic update
You saved me 80 bucks
Thank you so much for this video!!
Thanks for the advice reconnecting the R-Joy Con's ZR Ribbon cable! I was starting to lose my mind 🤣
Yeah, it can be nerve wracking.

Man, I apparently put the ribbon back in upside down when switching the shell. You just saved my joy-con!
I had doubts over the ‘paper and blow’ method, but it worked! My L button now works great for Metroid Dread.

Thanks man my r button was not working and i used the paper method and blowing into it and it started working again .
I do have a question, my left joycon, the ZL, it makes a clicking sound when I press it, but on the right one, the ZR, it doesn’t make a clicking sound but it still works- is there a way to fix that sound or no?
