How to Fix L ZL R ZR buttons on Switch Joy-Con Controllers | Stuck Trigger Bumper Shoulder Repair

- If you have a JoyCon controller for the Nintendo Switch and you are experiencing any of the following issues regarding the L ZL R ZR buttons, then this tutorial may help. Issues are: Activates on its own, loose feel, makes an odd noise, limited bounceback, only registers if I press hard, only registers sometimes, never registers, stuck in down position, stuck in up position, feels uneven. Some of the solutions involve cleaning, replacing buttons, examining ribbon cables, and replacing springs.

That video was very much helpful. Upon taking apart the controller, cleaning it up a bit, and replacing the L board (which looked OK, but still did not work), the controller works perfectly again. Looking forward to mote of your posts!

My joy sticks on my joycons have had horrible drift for a while. Taking your advice about using an electronics duster fixed it right away. I was able to just get it from my local grocery store and save myself $80 in minutes. Thank you!
Thank you for the video. Bought a used joy-con, and only ZR wasn't working. So the reason was that the ribbon cable of that particular button was disconnected. it wasn't easy to connect it back because of the quite complex construction, but I did it! And to my surprise, there were a lot of missing screws.

YES!!!!! I replaced my buttons with a kit from ExtremeRate and followed the video, but the video had no words. What got me was ZR not working because the video didnt make it clear that the ribbon head faces down and all the rest face up. Thank you so much for this comprehensive video to help so many people!!!

I had doubts over the ‘paper and blow’ method, but it worked! My L button now works great for Metroid Dread.
I dropped mine on my wood floor and it landed directly on the ZL button. Unfortunately, it looks like I jammed the tiny button underneath the button. My husband fixed the L with this tutorial though, so thank you! ❤️ I'll be able to remap until I get my new joy cons in the mail. 😉

I had issues with my ZL button.
Nasically the piston components were deassembled and were stuck behind all the other components like the arrow buttons.

Appreciate the explanation on the steps we should do before opening the joycons. My R button has been bugging me for a while because sometimes it's not registering or even just registered multiple times on single press. The paper method worked well!

At 5:55 I would recommend using a drop of alcohol instead to clean the screws. Isopropyl alcohol evaporates quickly and will not cause water damage to any delicate components. (Great vid though! Thanks :)

Hi. I replaced the ZR cable as the button on it had broken. This is a great “how to” video which I followed intently. I found that plugging the ribbon cable back in as described was almost impossible. I recommend that you insert the cable first then fold it around onto the tray. It is much easier to place the holding screw in than trying to insert the ribbon with all the tray attached to it. Other than that, perfect !

My nephew popped out his ZL button and lost it, so I bought a replacement ZL button and watching this vid helped me through most of it. Though I dont know if I missed the part where you put the button and spring back in or it wasnt in the video, I just winged it somehow. Still great help, specially in opening the joycon! Thank you!

Thank you so much! My l button stopped working entirely and found out that the keyswitch (?) wasn’t connected whatsoever and was broken. I swapped it out with one from a joycon I don’t use anymore but it kinda sucks that this happened after only six months.

I purchased a repair kit a while back to fix another joycons drift issue and noticed I had spare parts for left side too, my ribbon flex cable seemed to be the problem as after replacing it all works great again.

Managed to fix my R button which was only working sometimes by opening the controller up and spraying contact cleaner in the button
i am having trouble with the L trigger on my nintendo,
because when i was playing on my nintendo i was trying to press the L trigger
but it swings like if i go to an edge it swings that way and if i go to the other edge it does the same

i wont recommend using water into any CHARGED device, use rubber alcohol on the screws if they are hard to remove but do never use water(there is special non-conductive-water for stuff like this), removing the battery is a safety protocol since you can damage the components by touching them with your skin, very likely since this type of devices require a lot of handling around, and finally ribbon cables are very fragile yes, but nintendo likes to fold them something you should not do, so they are very likely to break even if you are being careful, replacing the whole slider would be a requirement if by sheer luck your ribbon cable was in the perfect line between broken and functional while being crushed between the battery and the outer shell so nintendo can save some cents on proper cables instead of cheap flexible pcbs.
Would I be able to just replace the exterior button L and R pieces without having to mess with the electronics? My buttons are chipped and scraped from being dropped. I’m not very good with technology, so I’m looking around to see if I can get around replacing the entire controller ^^’
Can i use the R ribbon from an old controller for my L ribbon replacement? It got creased or broken when i dropped it and doesn’t work anymore. I don’t know where my old left joycon is but i can look harder if i cant use the R ribbon as a replacement.

I do have a question, my left joycon, the ZL, it makes a clicking sound when I press it, but on the right one, the ZR, it doesn’t make a clicking sound but it still works- is there a way to fix that sound or no?

Do some games not support button mapping? My R button won’t work even after trying to use the paper trick or blowing in it, or updating. I tried to button map and it didn’t work for my game.

So when I'm playing a game, sometimes the zl and zr and x button doesn't work but when I enter the match( it's a Moba style game) it starts working again, it only doesn't work outside the battle, and in other games the buttons work just fine, the games name is Pokemon Unite, please let m know what I can do to fix it
Hello! I tried everything to fix the r button and nothing worked so I ended up opening it to see what what the problem. Just after I removed the part that is attached to the battery the little button thing that I think is the trigger of the r button popped out. It’s completely deattached from the board and the contact is very loose. I tried securing it a bit with force but it works just the same as before. Is there any place where I can buy the board? Or should I try soldering? I have a bit of experience opening and replacing parts of joycons but nothing as far as soldering :/ please help.
For the record mine also sometimes did the home button imput, if you have that problem too this might be your issue
I recently replaced the joy con very gently of course but now my ribbon for the minus button will not go all the way under the gate and therefor isn’t working anymore :( can you help?

The ZL and ZR buttons always felt weird. Like they sound hollow and twangy. They should've used microswitches so it feels the same as the shoulders.
Hmmm so my zl button cable only works if its pins down what does that mean?
there are not 3 different tri wing bits that work... the reason you are stripping your screws is because you are not using the right sized bit, and its camming out (cam-out)

the absolute BEST method for the ZR ribbon cable, is to remove the ZR button cover, unscrew the actual board with the button on it, plug the connector in and then screw the board back into place with the middle plastic placed in its regular position, this seems to lower any risk of ripping the cable
i had the tiny button on the back jammed inside.
