Disclaimer: To say this video was incredibly rushed would be an understatement. Last year I participated in a sort of challenge started by BestGuyEver, where I had to make 31 videos for 31 days. The subject matter could be anything so I stuck with what I know. This video was entirely unscripted. Of the minor errors in this video, they usually have to do with my descriptions of events. IE: Instead of many cars wrecking, it was just one or two; instead of the incident happening on lap 1, it was lap 3, etc. Overall, I don't think these take away from the quality of the vid too terribly much, so I decided to upload it to keep the content flowing while I work on a big project that is set to be released in the next few weeks. Great work man. I have watched all your videos so far. I enjoy your content. You really explain yourself well. My great uncle was Bobby Isaac. He died before i was born. Always wished i could have met him before he died. If ever you did a video about him i would love to learn more. His son Randy (my cousin) doesn’t really like to talk about him at family gatherings so I’ve never been able to learn much.
One error I found was that you said that the 2006 Bud Shootout was moved to Sunday afternoon because of the Winter Olympics. That is incorrect. The actual reason the race was moved to Sunday is because it got rained out the previous night.
@@acetracer2417 because otherwise the track is completely empty and fans get bored and leave. Even under safety they are more entertaining than an empty track.
You’re also talking about a guy that “Won” 200 races. That’s a lot larger sample size to where yeah variance would even it out. It’s a lot different today where if a driver has 20 wins he had a great career.
@@bjrollick5262 You also need to remember before 1972 there was 50-60 races a *year* which increases *everyone's* sample sizes as well. Comparing 50-60+ races to whats *barely* 36? If that? Its 2 entirely different sets of standards now.

It's refreshing to hear commentary that actually sounds like it came from somebody that likes racing and also fair play. I too have seen dozens of calls that you scratch your head and try to find how their version is even possible. Imagine starting on the outside on a 1/4 mile dirt track, and the inside car jumps the start, gives you the door all the way around turn 4 approaching the restart flag, and tries to move up to the outside lane while only halfway past the car there and turning himself sideways across the front of his car like Dale Sr's car in the last crash he had. My buddy driving, braked turned left and left the guy dumped in turn 1. NASCAR, DQ'd my buddy for ''rough driving'', when his options when the other idiot decided to just move where he already was himself, was to STOP just past the flag man waving a green flag to 18 other cars, or become invisible and allow the other idiot to win the race uncontested. There were more, as he fit the description of Karl Edwards sophmore season, NASCAR finding reasons to disqualify him for no real reason. There are lots and lots of poor decisions by NASCAR over the years and those are only the ones we happen to know of.
@@bobbysolo5411 Restarts under the old system, (lap down cars started on the outside lane, first car a lap down started next to the leader.) Many times one of the golden boys would get the outside pole even if they were not the first car a lap down, and debris yellows would fly even though the track workers could not find any thing more that a hot dog wrapper, if even that.
The Carl Long story is even crappier than you let on. He'd bought the engine, but it had overheated during practice. Because overheating can cause excessive wear, he actually took the car to NASCAR to have them check it to make sure it was still legal. They checked it, found it was a fraction of an inch over the tolerance. They could have told him that he couldn't use that engine any more. They could have even confiscated it. But no-they lowered to boom on him because they found a problem when _he_ _asked_ _them_ _to_ _check_ _it_ . BTW, that was the day when I went from planning my weekend around NASCAR practice and race coverage to it being something I'd watch if I didn't have anything better to do.
It's REALLY odd seeing NASCAR race in Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as someone who watches F1. What's NOT odd is seeing how the officials have really shotty calls like the FIA does.
And this is way better now than back in time as the scorer's job is NOT an easy one. Manually logging laps and position, has to be hard to keep accurately in an everchanging field of cars with multiple changes of position per car per lap, CHAOS. I have seen races where a car laps down was declared winner, despite the crowd, drivers and pit members screaming against the mistake. They have scoring devices in the cars now to take the mystery away.

Awesome content as always. Quick note regarding the 10:17 mark. Dave Blaney was actually parked for the rest of the 2007 Daytona 500 for unsafely exiting the pits and causing a multi car wreck.
One notable omission - Dale Earnhardt Jr being docked 25 points for dropping an S-bomb in his post-race interview. He won the race but was effectively scored in 7th place for saying a cuss word.
Whenever I hear talk of dwindling numbers in fan attendance at races, I'm reminded of the Ricky Rudd incident. Until then, we had attended on average about 3 races a year. That asinine call ended it for us.
Racing officials: sometimes you love them; sometimes, you hate them. You broke down the ten worst calls in NASCAR to a T. I’m glad you included the controversy at the 1963 Jacksonville 200. That was Wendell Scott’s first and only Grand National race victory after winning dozens of races in the regional level. The officials did him dirty, but at the same time, saved his life. Great video 👍🏾👍🏾.
You can't say the officials did him dirty and then turn around and say but they saved his life that doesn't make any sense. They did that because he probably would have been killed. Also the white girl in victory Lane probably wouldn't even have wanted to kissed Wendell Scott.
Wendell Scott was a really nice guy,I lived not far from him when I was growing up.i was born in 1959,and I am a white guy.but just like ever kid back then we all rode our bikes around around ever where,and me and all the rest of my friends would always stop and say ha to Wendell and his kids and they would go riding with us around the neighborhood and town to.but everyone in our area thought the world of him back then.well now I live in a different part of the state,but I still go back ever year to my kin fokes farms to deer hunt with them.and evertime I do I still think of old Wendell Scott in his garage with his kids working on his race car,just to have the chance to go have some fun to go out to who knows where and race his car and just have fun doing it.so to me r.i.p Wendell you were really a great person and as kids we all loved to listen to your army,hunting and racing tails and you my friend will never be forgotten by know one who ever knew you!!!!!
That too fast in pit lane penalty is some straight up iRacing stuff. I couldn't count how many times I've been spun, ended up spinning into either the entrance or exit of pit lane, and ended up with a stop and go penalty because of it.
Chew Magna makes me remember that shitty nascar 2011 game where you went to pit at Daytona during green flag runs and you attempt to match the speed limit of 55 and the AIs come in behind you going 90 miles an hour and ram you so hard you get a speeding penalty, good times
Here's one of those little mistakes: The 2007 Montreal race was not NASCAR'S first trip north of the border. There were two Cup races in Canada in the '50's, one of which was Richard Petty's debut race. I'm surprised that Bobby Allison's win at Bowman Gray in 1971 wasn't listed. NASCAR deciding retroactively that Bobby winning in a Grand Am car doesn't count, even though Tiny Lund's two wins do.

(petty used the same oversized engine the next year in the exact same race!) allison said that he would quit and sue until meeting Bill France Jr. and Allison said that he had "received satisfactory restitution"--whatever that is suppose to mean? money under the table? promise of future wins/leeway on car?
The thing with Robby Gordon makes me wonder, what's with Montreal and screwjobs? Bret Hart, the 1994 Montreal Expos, Robby Gordon and Sebastian Vettel have all been screwed in that city

At the time of the 08 dega race, I was pumped watchign Tony Win, I was basically throwing a huge shit fit, saying Smith went below the yellow line to win. Looking back on it, Smith Got Screwed.
I grew up in Tony’s home town in Indiana and I also was throwing a fit about the yellow line rule. I was so wrong, Tony did not win that race. Tony is still a badass but NASCAR blew that call for sure!
I remember cousin carls first win, that first backflip. Happened to be the same weekend I got Pokémon Emerald for time context. He had a bright future, just terrible luck.
He was kind of a jerk in my book. His payback for wrecking himself blocking at Dega was not only uncalled for but dangerous. I'd have parked him for the year or forever, for that move, AND sit him down with the video to show WHO it was swerving and WHO it was that was going straight when he turned himself across the front of Kesolowski's car.

I just started watching your videos today SlapShoes and I appreciate your no Bullshit approach telling it like it is . NASCAR Officials are quick to take a win away from some drivers while turning a blind eye to others . Case in point when Clint Bowyer was stripped of his win about 4 or 5 years ago after his post race inspection . His car being the thickness of a quarter to tall or high . The thickness of a quarter isn't shit compared to a lot of the stuff they turn a blind eye to . If there's rules , then make it the same for every driver and team . You were accurate about Officials having their head up their ass in my opinion . You have a good channel going on here . Keep up the good work .
Love all the videos. Hilariously truthful. Seen a interview with Petty about the engine and I think he said someone told Maurice Petty(brother) that once it cools the cubic inches will come down and Maurice (or whoever was the engine builder) just smiled and said "you can take that engine to Antarctica and it won't cool enough to make specs."
So talking Petty at about 14:40, the reason Petty had so many wins is because he was basically the first driver to get major sponsor money and that allowed him to build cars much more powerful and durable. Then, you have to look at WHERE he got wins. Back in the day, there wasn't just one race on a Sunday for 7-8 months. He would run 3-4 races a week, beating everyone with a better setup and more power than the local guys that race out of their homes garage. So no, no one will be able to break his number of wins. It's basically impossible with the schedule they have today.
@@mikebing1230 yeah, he is extremely overrated. Earnhardt, Pearson, etc, were better than Petty in my opinion. And that is based on the competition level and the restrictions. When Petty was in his hayday, the only consistent competition he had was the Allisons and even they couldnt match his backing.

Thanks for mentioning the Wendell Scott incident. I remember when it happened. I would like to point out that although Nascar has been road racing for many decades the track at Sears Point is more of a classic sports car track with many slow corners, elevation changes, and camber changes. So cars tend to run slower on this course than others. On these types of courses it's very easy to spin out a car in front of you. Especially at a hairpin turn. Rubbing is racing, but on a road course, as opposed to a short track, there is only one preferred line into the corner. So again, It's very easy to spin a car out when you are both driving the same line. You just use the car in front as a brake. Nascar enforced the rules that ALL roadrace sanctioning bodies enforce in regards to contact( and believe me there is a lot of contact in road racing). It was just not recieved well with the fans so they haven't been as strict since. If this had happened at an SCCA event. The outcome would've been exactly the same. I personally believe waiting till the end of the race to black flag Rudd stunk though. The SCCA or IMSA would never do that. PS I once saw Dale Earnhardt get penalized two laps at a race for doing that(and more)once.
Thank you fir putting that as number 1. Rudd was always the guy trying to get into the country club. Hard to beat NASCAR royalty when you had a reputation for putting them in their place all over the country
One thing I'd add in about number 6 (the 2008 race at Talladega) is the following year I believe, they had a nearly identical situation. The guy remembered this incident and instead of doing the safe thing he didn't go down. It resulted in a very nasty crash and nearly killed a spectator. That guy ended up winning the race, where the guy who did the safe thing lost the race. That's how you know they screwed up.
Something similar happened in a GT World Challenge Europe race at Hockenheim last year. A Ferrari 296 GT3 fielded by Emil Frey Racing pulled a bump-and-run on one of WRT’s BMW M4 GT3s, just nudging the Bimmer out of the way, gets third place as a result, and then the positions get reversed. It wasn’t a bump-and-dump, it was relatively clean, but WRT and BMW get preferential treatment (Hockenheim and BMW both being German), even though their driver was doing more blatant blocking earlier in the race and was never penalized.
I would put Petty and Scott at #1 and #2 respectively. Penalizing a driver for a dirty, but perfectly legal tactic is one thing. Blatantly inventing a scoring error while drivers and officials have sheer respect for Wendell Scott and even been his bodyguards at particularly racist events is another one. *AND THEN THERE IS RICHARD PETTY COMPLETELY GETTING AWAY WITH MASSIVELY ILLEGAL ENGINE/TIRES WHILE OTHERS GET BANNED FOR A YEAR AND FINED 6 DIGITS FIGURES.*
That bit on unionization and the Talledega race was super interesting. Reminds me a little bit of the incredible tire controversy in F1 at Indianapolis from a few years back where only a few cars were able to line up because they had the right tire brand.
Growing up as a big baseball and basketball fan, I never put much attention to Nascar when it'd appear on ESPN. Now, through your channel aswell as Brock Beard I've grown fond of the history that I didn't get a chance to experience. Now that Nascar ratings and sponsorships are being lost, it's nice to see the golden days of the sport. Keep up the great content. 🤙
Great video! Its interesting about the last one regarding the whole bump and run thing. Its very different in Australia with the V8 Supercars. NASCAR has that mentality that beef will be sorted out amongst the drivers, y'know like if a guy gets booted off the track he can and will exact revenge, and rightfully so. However, with the V8's in Australia a bump and run is a penalty (look up Scott McLaughlin bump and run Craig Lowndes for a good example) and if a guy tries to get revenge they usually park him for a while. Anyways, great vid, excellent points, and cool commentary!
NASCAR sort of went down that road for a while, but it resulted in a lot of mess because it came off as arbitrary and randomly enforced, just like with Rudd. They never really set parameters as to what was heavy enough to merit action, so finally they just scrapped it all and went with the "boys have at it" thing and let them settle it amongst themselves unless it was excessively egregious. Personally I prefer it that way.
Having watched a video about Wendell Scott, it turned out the Jacksonville win wasn't the only achievement he was snubbed of by NASCAR, he was also snubbed of the Rookie of the Year in 1961
Having driven several races and crew chief at others (Dash Series) at Daytona, I would say with 99.9% probability that NASCAR issued Petty a larger restrictor plate. I have seen first hand (actually in my hand) NASCAR manipulated rule infractions. I am a huge Richard Petty fan by the way.
After not having watched NASCAR for years, other than Dale Jr's farewell season, I heard about the Ryan Newman crash and watched a few angles of it to see what happened. Now, my feed is filled with NASCAR videos, especially yours. I have not been disappointed. Your videos help me relive moments I didn't pay attention to when I was a kid, back when the sport was simpler to follow and the commissioner didn't mess with the rules. I still can't get back into it, but it's nice to watch the old races and relive some stuff I never got to truly appreciate. Amazing videos, my man!

Clint Bowyer just mentioned the race Biffle won during the broadcast at the 2024 Richmond spring race. He said that he still thinks he should have won and keeps an asterisk next to Biffle’s win there.
8:20 actually they just stopped scoring him after a certain lap, as if he had wrecked and couldn't continue on. Officially I think he finished 4 laps down.

PLUS, the last race of the year Earnhardt, on his last pitstop, had too many people over the wall but the Nascar official that was watching the pitstop didn't see nutin'. All three TV announcers caught it right away and even commented Dale just lost the Championship. But nope, Bill France Jr.'s Nascar didn't work that way. They wanted Dale to be champion and they got Dale as champion. I even remember an interview with Dale where is said Mark was the real 1990 Champion.

honestly, NASCAR handled the Wendell Scott situation as well they could've given all the circumstances. the only part they arguably dropped the ball was not having an exact replica of the trophy made to the exact size, but if I was Wendell I'd just be happy they were considerate enough to even make a 2nd trophy. Just given NASCARs inconsistent reputation I wouldn't have been surprised if they gave him a small plaque or something stupid

I'm going to defend NASCAR on the Biffle one. As you mentioned, it had been an extremely long day and they were only a straightaway from finally ending it. But the other thing to remember is this was during the playoffs; Biffle was a non-chase driver, but Bowyer and Johnson (who won the title) were in it, and they didn't want to hear protests from the other 10 Chase drivers as to why the 07 and 48 got basically free points. Easier to just leave the positions as they were on the last lap.
Also on #8, even though Robby Gordon is a known jerk (and I'm shocked NASCAR didn't suspend him further than the next week for his antics), that finish always turned me off to Ambrose for the rest of his NASCAR career.
Collin McNaught also I don't think the current rule about maintaining speed under caution was around then. I believe it was implemented after this race (I could be wrong though) or rewritten after this race.

wow even the detail made by the announcer abt the guy getting to keep the checkered flag this time around , abt the yellow lane incidents. deym im not a nascar fan dnt know much abt it, but this vids narrating and explaining gets me hooked. i had to look up some terminology but all good i fully am enjoying this vid . just half wat through and i had to comment
#1 - NASCAR rules stated at the time that you cannot pass under caution. With the transponders around the track, you're locked in scoring wise. Yes, Biffle did run out of gas and yes, he was passed by two cars. But #1, the race was under caution (no passing, remember?) and #2, he did cross the start/finish line thus making it official. Regardless of what people think, awarding the win to him was the correct call. Disclaimer - I am not a Biffle fan, but I am fair with this stuff.

Due to a scoring error; I actually won the 1969 Daytona 500. Despite not being born until 2 years later

They checked it, found it was a fraction of an inch over the tolerance. They could have told him that he couldn't use that engine any more. They could have even confiscated it. But no-they lowered to boom on him because they found a problem when _he_ _asked_ _them_ _to_ _check_ _it_ .
BTW, that was the day when I went from planning my weekend around NASCAR practice and race coverage to it being something I'd watch if I didn't have anything better to do.

It's REALLY odd seeing NASCAR race in Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as someone who watches F1.
What's NOT odd is seeing how the officials have really shotty calls like the FIA does.

And this is way better now than back in time as the scorer's job is NOT an easy one. Manually logging laps and position, has to be hard to keep accurately in an everchanging field of cars with multiple changes of position per car per lap, CHAOS. I have seen races where a car laps down was declared winner, despite the crowd, drivers and pit members screaming against the mistake. They have scoring devices in the cars now to take the mystery away.

One notable omission - Dale Earnhardt Jr being docked 25 points for dropping an S-bomb in his post-race interview. He won the race but was effectively scored in 7th place for saying a cuss word.

That was Wendell Scott’s first and only Grand National race victory after winning dozens of races in the regional level. The officials did him dirty, but at the same time, saved his life. Wendell Scott was a really nice guy,I lived not far from him when I was growing up.i was born in 1959,and I am a white guy.but just like ever kid back then we all rode our bikes around around ever where,and me and all the rest of my friends would always stop and say ha to Wendell and his kids and they would go riding with us around the neighborhood and town to.but everyone in our area thought the world of him back then.well now I live in a different part of the state,but I still go back ever year to my kin fokes farms to deer hunt with them.and evertime I do I still think of old Wendell Scott in his garage with his kids working on his race car,just to have the chance to go have some fun to go out to who knows where and race his car and just have fun doing it.so to me r.i.p Wendell you were really a great person and as kids we all loved to listen to your army,hunting and racing tails and you my friend will never be forgotten by know one who ever knew you!!!!!

That too fast in pit lane penalty is some straight up iRacing stuff. I couldn't count how many times I've been spun, ended up spinning into either the entrance or exit of pit lane, and ended up with a stop and go penalty because of it.
Chew Magna makes me remember that shitty nascar 2011 game where you went to pit at Daytona during green flag runs and you attempt to match the speed limit of 55 and the AIs come in behind you going 90 miles an hour and ram you so hard you get a speeding penalty, good times

Here's one of those little mistakes: The 2007 Montreal race was not NASCAR'S first trip north of the border. There were two Cup races in Canada in the '50's, one of which was Richard Petty's debut race.
I'm surprised that Bobby Allison's win at Bowman Gray in 1971 wasn't listed. NASCAR deciding retroactively that Bobby winning in a Grand Am car doesn't count, even though Tiny Lund's two wins do.
Is that why he says 85 wins?

I grew up in Tony’s home town in Indiana and I also was throwing a fit about the yellow line rule. I was so wrong, Tony did not win that race. Tony is still a badass but NASCAR blew that call for sure!

NASCAR Officials are quick to take a win away from some drivers while turning a blind eye to others . Case in point when Clint Bowyer was stripped of his win about 4 or 5 years ago after his post race inspection . His car being the thickness of a quarter to tall or high . The thickness of a quarter isn't shit compared to a lot of the stuff they turn a blind eye to . If there's rules , then make it the same for every driver and team . Love all the videos. Hilariously truthful. Seen a interview with Petty about the engine and I think he said someone told Maurice Petty(brother) that once it cools the cubic inches will come down and Maurice (or whoever was the engine builder) just smiled and said "you can take that engine to Antarctica and it won't cool enough to make specs."
So talking Petty at about 14:40, the reason Petty had so many wins is because he was basically the first driver to get major sponsor money and that allowed him to build cars much more powerful and durable. Then, you have to look at WHERE he got wins. Back in the day, there wasn't just one race on a Sunday for 7-8 months. He would run 3-4 races a week, beating everyone with a better setup and more power than the local guys that race out of their homes garage. So no, no one will be able to break his number of wins. It's basically impossible with the schedule they have today.

When Petty was in his hayday, the only consistent competition he had was the Allisons and even they couldnt match his backing.

Thanks for mentioning the Wendell Scott incident. I remember when it happened.
I would like to point out that although Nascar has been road racing for many decades the track at Sears Point is more of a classic sports car track with many slow corners, elevation changes, and camber changes. So cars tend to run slower on this course than others. On these types of courses it's very easy to spin out a car in front of you. Especially at a hairpin turn. Rubbing is racing, but on a road course, as opposed to a short track, there is only one preferred line into the corner. So again, It's very easy to spin a car out when you are both driving the same line. You just use the car in front as a brake. Nascar enforced the rules that ALL roadrace sanctioning bodies enforce in regards to contact( and believe me there is a lot of contact in road racing). It was just not recieved well with the fans so they haven't been as strict since.
If this had happened at an SCCA event. The outcome would've been exactly the same. I personally believe waiting till the end of the race to black flag Rudd stunk though. The SCCA or IMSA would never do that.
PS I once saw Dale Earnhardt get penalized two laps at a race for doing that(and more)once.

One thing I'd add in about number 6 (the 2008 race at Talladega) is the following year I believe, they had a nearly identical situation. The guy remembered this incident and instead of doing the safe thing he didn't go down. It resulted in a very nasty crash and nearly killed a spectator. That guy ended up winning the race, where the guy who did the safe thing lost the race. That's how you know they screwed up.

I didn't see anything dirty about that, I don't recall Ricky ever being a dirty driver. Scrappy and tough as nails? Yes. Dirty? No.
There was another one that he missed, where Rudd had won but they mixed up the scoring and gave the win to Neil Bonnett, who was a lap down.

Something similar happened in a GT World Challenge Europe race at Hockenheim last year. A Ferrari 296 GT3 fielded by Emil Frey Racing pulled a bump-and-run on one of WRT’s BMW M4 GT3s, just nudging the Bimmer out of the way, gets third place as a result, and then the positions get reversed. It wasn’t a bump-and-dump, it was relatively clean, but WRT and BMW get preferential treatment (Hockenheim and BMW both being German), even though their driver was doing more blatant blocking earlier in the race and was never penalized.
I would put Petty and Scott at #1 and #2 respectively. Penalizing a driver for a dirty, but perfectly legal tactic is one thing.
Blatantly inventing a scoring error while drivers and officials have sheer respect for Wendell Scott and even been his bodyguards at particularly racist events is another one.
*AND THEN THERE IS RICHARD PETTY COMPLETELY GETTING AWAY WITH MASSIVELY ILLEGAL ENGINE/TIRES WHILE OTHERS GET BANNED FOR A YEAR AND FINED 6 DIGITS FIGURES.*

That bit on unionization and the Talledega race was super interesting. Reminds me a little bit of the incredible tire controversy in F1 at Indianapolis from a few years back where only a few cars were able to line up because they had the right tire brand.
Growing up as a big baseball and basketball fan, I never put much attention to Nascar when it'd appear on ESPN.
Now, through your channel aswell as Brock Beard I've grown fond of the history that I didn't get a chance to experience. Now that Nascar ratings and sponsorships are being lost, it's nice to see the golden days of the sport.

Great video! Its interesting about the last one regarding the whole bump and run thing. Its very different in Australia with the V8 Supercars. NASCAR has that mentality that beef will be sorted out amongst the drivers, y'know like if a guy gets booted off the track he can and will exact revenge, and rightfully so. However, with the V8's in Australia a bump and run is a penalty (look up Scott McLaughlin bump and run Craig Lowndes for a good example) and if a guy tries to get revenge they usually park him for a while. Anyways, great vid, excellent points, and cool commentary!

NASCAR sort of went down that road for a while, but it resulted in a lot of mess because it came off as arbitrary and randomly enforced, just like with Rudd. They never really set parameters as to what was heavy enough to merit action, so finally they just scrapped it all and went with the "boys have at it" thing and let them settle it amongst themselves unless it was excessively egregious. Personally I prefer it that way.

Having driven several races and crew chief at others (Dash Series) at Daytona, I would say with 99.9% probability that NASCAR issued Petty a larger restrictor plate. I have seen first hand (actually in my hand) NASCAR manipulated rule infractions. I am a huge Richard Petty fan by the way.

Clint Bowyer just mentioned the race Biffle won during the broadcast at the 2024 Richmond spring race. He said that he still thinks he should have won and keeps an asterisk next to Biffle’s win there.

Honorable mention to 1990 Winston Cup Champion Mark Martin and the infamous bolted spacer.
PLUS, the last race of the year Earnhardt, on his last pitstop, had too many people over the wall but the Nascar official that was watching the pitstop didn't see nutin'. All three TV announcers caught it right away and even commented Dale just lost the Championship. But nope, Bill France Jr.'s Nascar didn't work that way. They wanted Dale to be champion and they got Dale as champion.
I even remember an interview with Dale where is said Mark was the real 1990 Champion.

honestly, NASCAR handled the Wendell Scott situation as well they could've given all the circumstances. the only part they arguably dropped the ball was not having an exact replica of the trophy made to the exact size, but if I was Wendell I'd just be happy they were considerate enough to even make a 2nd trophy. Just given NASCARs inconsistent reputation I wouldn't have been surprised if they gave him a small plaque or something stupid

I'm going to defend NASCAR on the Biffle one. As you mentioned, it had been an extremely long day and they were only a straightaway from finally ending it. But the other thing to remember is this was during the playoffs; Biffle was a non-chase driver, but Bowyer and Johnson (who won the title) were in it, and they didn't want to hear protests from the other 10 Chase drivers as to why the 07 and 48 got basically free points. Easier to just leave the positions as they were on the last lap.
Also on #8, even though Robby Gordon is a known jerk (and I'm shocked NASCAR didn't suspend him further than the next week for his antics), that finish always turned me off to Ambrose for the rest of his NASCAR career.
Collin McNaught also I don't think the current rule about maintaining speed under caution was around then. I believe it was implemented after this race (I could be wrong though) or rewritten after this race.

#1 - NASCAR rules stated at the time that you cannot pass under caution. With the transponders around the track, you're locked in scoring wise. Yes, Biffle did run out of gas and yes, he was passed by two cars. But #1, the race was under caution (no passing, remember?) and #2, he did cross the start/finish line thus making it official.
