I work in a vet’s office as an assistant and I’m amazed how much our vets have to know. They’re like doctors and pharmacists and behaviorists for multiple different species all at the same time
Professional Dreamer don't be scared. I'm almost done with my 1st year in vet school and I couldn't be happier. It's a lot of work but in the end it will be worth it!
Just came across this video, and wanted to say thanks for all the others that you've made. I've watched quite a few and they help so much. I'm currently a Junior in High School but I know for sure, 200% that I want a career in Veterinary Medicine. I've watched countless videos online and googled as much as I can about the profession. I've always had a 3.5 or higher gpa (it's high school though, so it's easy) along with taking college level classes at my school that give me college credits when I pass. Among those is Marine Biology (taking this year) and Calculus. I'm going to start volunteering a ton at various shelters in my area just to get a further feel of the profession. I plan to get into UF and take my courses there eventually applying to their Vet School. It's a long road to go, but I know it's what I want to spend my life doing. People like you have given me so much information furthering my interest in the area. Thank you a ton, you're helping a lot of teens just like me. (:
Damian G hey Damian! See you in vet school! I’m going to UF as well and I’m currently a senior in highschool, I’m assuming you are a senior now considering this was posted a year ago. Maybe we’ll meet each other someday.
Dr.Varsha Scooby Did she choose med school because it can make you more money in the end? I want to be a vet more than I want to be an anesthesiologist but anesthesiologists make more.

This video really help me have a better understanding between the two :) I'm a freshman in high school and that's been the main thing I've been stressing about for my future career
I’ve worked with animals my whole life. I grew up around different species of animals and ever since the age of 8, I’ve been volunteering at animals shelters and things like that. I love animals so much and definitely want to become a veterinarian :))
One of my biggest worries about college is that i never wake up on tome for school. I have plenty of alarms and my parents wake me up multiple times, but I never wake up enlugh to be completely conciius
Another thing to keep in mind is that physicians are more likely to be sued bc with almost every death is an investigation and lawsuit happy families. Very rarely will a veterinarian get sued since animal deaths are not really a legal issue.
Tomorrow I have to choose between those two 🤦♀️ Ps. In my country, medical school and dental school are a bit harder to get in compared to vet school but in USA, Canada and Europe, it is opposite right?
Something big...if you are a vet you may have patients that weigh over 1,000 lbs, and can kick or bite. Even the little cats and dogs if stressed can scratch and bite.
I think this is a common misconception. While there is a much smaller number of veterinary schools in the united states, and perhaps the world than medical schools, the number of people applying to veterinary school is much smaller. In 2018 only 7,500 people applied to the 39 schools using the VMACS application portal (30 of those are US schools). On average that's about 190 students per school, of course some schools have more applicants than others. In 2018 about 53,000 applicants were submitted to the 179 medical schools in the US. That's about 296 applicants per school. Statistically speaking medical school is actually more competitive, on average, than veterinary school. Perhaps at one point in time vet school was more competitive when there was a very limited number of schools in the US. Hope this helps anyone contemplating applying and is worried about the competitiveness. Don't get me wrong, getting in is very hard work but the career is worth it in my opinion.
the field (vet medicine) is clearly much harder than human medicine (since they have to do all specialties and in several species whereas physician only do 1 specialty on 1 specie). As for school competitiveness it depends onthe country. In Spain med school is much more competitive in than vet school. In France it's the opposite. And in many other EU countries the 2 are similar.
David White well in Virginia the vet school at Virginia tech is very competitive. Last I checked on it, there were about 1500 students fighting for only 200 spots. Since then, they have made it easier to complete all their pre reqs, which means there will be a lot more students applying for spots next year. Granted it is one of the top vet schools in the country.
@@mnmzie3826 I wouldn't say that we have to "master" every speciality. Just like in human medicine, veterinary medicine also offers residency programs if a veterinarian did want to master a particular field of medicine. For instance you can enter a dentistry, radiology, surgery, cardiology, reproduction, or even now behavior and animal welfare residencies and there are many others. General practice veterinarians are not by any means expected to be a master of all of these aspects of veterinary medicine coming out of vet school. That's why specialists exist!
Britni Okay Ets do pay malpractice insurance but it’s much much cheaper than MD malpractice insurance. Rates vary depending on the type of practice (equine racehorse practice is probably one of specialties with higher rates because some of those critters can be worth millions of dollars). I’ve been a predominantly small animal vet for 28 years (never been sued knock on wood) and In general I have found that people are understanding when things don’t go well as long as they feel you’ve done your best and you’ve communicated with them honestly.
yes vets have to pay one. In Europe vet malpractise insurance for horse medicine are more expensive than physicians' (but physicians' insurance are not very expensive here). But for small animals and cows they are a little less expensive. And there are a little less lawsuits against vets than against physicians (however lawsuits against physicians are not very common, doing lawsuits for nothing and all the time is really only an American thing)
In NZ only our pracs are mandatory (we have about 6 hours of prac a week). But I agree about the pay! We get paid rubbish for the amount of training we do and time on the job we spend! Sorry I should say 6 hours of prac was second semester of third year I've just completed - prior to that prac time is a blur 😂
Oh boy, I am at a crossroads and I once seriously considered veterinarian medicine, but now I’m seriously considering law enforcement. I don’t know any vets personally but plenty of law enforcement and in the end I just want a stable, interesting, fulfilling and rewarding career and I love studying and the idea of being a veterinarian; animas hold a special place in my heart but the officers in my life are pushing me to take a le career and they are all great people. Hell maybe I can become a special veterinarian police and netflix can make a show about me! XD Well, that and I can also see my love of animals pushing me to open up my own kennel; I’ve always been interested in breeding working animals especially K9 units for police and military.
There are other jobs besides being a veterinarian. You can always look into being a vet tech. As a tech you spend more time with the animals than the dr does helping them recover from surgery and comforting them (I’m currently a vet tech and feel it’s a job often overlooked).
This is such a great video. I've been considering both but I didn't really know much about the internships and requirements for med school. Love the vid!
Also don't forget that's much more difficult to get into medical school and veterinary school. Medical school is a plum and is numerically limited intentionally to keep wait times long and prices up. I hear you can go to medical school in Cuba at a reasonable price And it's a first-rate education.
It’s actually more difficult to get in veterinary school because they’re few and far between. Not even enough schools to fill up every state, while for medical, there are multiple per state (usually).
Hi, I really enjoyed this video. Is it that they teach the full basic medical sciences in vet school as well like they do in med school? What level do you have to reach before you are allowed to practice with real animal patients?
98000 dollars a year is wrong or depends on where are you living if you are in Russia you will get 220000 a year because many people have animals and farms

When you compare veterinarian medical wages it's kind of erroneous because medical doctors in the United States make much more than they do in any other country.
