Back watching to a year later I’m so impressed by these guys and thinking about how Greg Rolie and Neil Schoen have known each other for so many years since Santana so interesting
Outstanding. Every cell in my body remembers every note of this song. Unbelievable gifts of musicianship. Thank you always to all band members and behind the scenes personnel who make it happen. Thank you for enriching my experience with your soulful awesome music. I love you. Health to you.
I saw those guys at the Fox theater in Oakland. A great show!. Deen is an amazing singer and drummer and Greg Raleigh is one of my all-time favorites. Thanks Neal...
Rolle added just a great baritone to the vocals. He and Perry were such a great counter weight to each other. Deen is just a badass musician. Singing and playing drums is the hardest thing to do on stage.
i like dean's singing alot...I would go so far as to say that if i could have perrry singing...it would be Dean all the way!!!! Sounds more authentic than the others!
Yes, Deen is talented and filled in nice for Steve. But fact is all the others who filled in as singer well let's just say what it was and is fill ins. Steve Perry is and will always be the voice of Journey.
Deen was on a drum kit for the NYC Central Park event that was called off due to lightning. Someone else was singing for them, but didn’t sound as good as Deen does in my videos. Neal was good, but only short guitar leads. Can we get a Spaceman!?
Schon is 2nd to none within mid scale pauses, un-predictable even within other professional guitarists just when/where next pause will evolve. Some are down pulls, some are multiple string screamers, some are Floyd rose enhanced, but none are duplicated being schons evolution. His take offs are from melodic, to strings glowing from friction heat. Highly well rounded guirarest, metal-blues complete. Plus Neal provided many live from his home studio solo videos during 2020 arena shutdowns covid arrival. Kept the music flowing, arenas or not". Very creative schon, been entertaining since he was a little kid.
That's what happens when one expects to see and hear a live number played exactly as it was recorded on the studio album. Journey started as a improvisational jam band, and I am so happy to see and hear tracks from the first three (superior) albums that I can now tolerate the "hits" played ad nauseam on the radio. Ask a Journey fan who is their guitarist, and most won't know. Ask a fan of the first three albums, and they will consider Schon a guitar god. Enjoy "Kohoutek:" th-cam.com/video/hnle6J382iI/w-d-xo.html
He did mess up... wasn’t looking and slid to the wrong fret. It happens to everyone. He played through and corrected it quick without freaking out. Sign of a pro!
I’m more impressed that it’s still up on YT , kudos to Neal for allowing a true jam ! As a guitar player in numerous bands for over 30 years it happens! The thing is EVERYONE has a cell phone now and EVERYTHING is recorded, that’s a lot of ‘ no where to hide ‘ time , and when you think of all the videos of Neal out there this is the only one there is of a glitch, I’d say that’s amazing!
When l.see someone like dean play drums and sing so perfectly, so incredibly talented, makes me happy, butt at the same time l look at myself and see how little talent l have lol 😆
Pre Steve Perry with Aynsley Dunbar on drums was my favorite lineup. Extended jams and solos. All vocals by Rolie. Hoping this lineup goes on tour again.
Well, that is the way it was played Ad Nauseam on FM radio when it was first released, and still so on Classic Rock stations.. I can add it to my TH-cam channel, and/or blend the two together as they were performed at this concert. Opinion?
No, not Stamina, pure TALENT baby. Greg always had it, and apparently Deen, has it in abundance!!! I LOVE, "FEELIN' THAT WAY"... THANK YOU, for starting the ORIGINAL, "JOURNEY", BAND, GREG & NEAL!!! I cherish ALL of the awesome memories!!!♊❤💋🤟😍🤪
Why do people always get so excited when drummers sing while they play?!When I was 16 I was in bands I sang backing Vox on almost every song and sang 8-10 lead vox every night!!!I of course looked like a baby and the club owners got crazy about the fact that I’d be in the club looking so young,But I didn’t drink so they eventually got over it!!But yeah the club would go absolutely nuts when I sang,And I always thought why are they so excited I’m doing this when these guys(my bass and guitar players) have all these strings they have to hit perfectly etc and sing this just blew my mind,I’m not knocking Dean at all here a bit of a show off,But has a good voice and though it takes a little from the presence of the drums in the song,He does do a great job over all!!
At this show Neal commented that Deen sang in the same key as Steve Perry. Also, Deen had the advantage of using a microphone headpiece so he didn't have to keep his head turned towards a fixed microphone as he moved his arms from from left to right and back again to hit all the components of his drum kit. I would think that would be easier if you can see where you're hitting. I hope to see this version of Journey again after Covid. This time I will be on the floor up close as I have great videos from my balcony seat. First three Journey albums are my favorite, but I no longer have sore feelings towards the "new" songs. Look for and enjoy my other videos from this show." Kohoutek" features Deen at his best even though it is an instrumental.
A show off? Lol. Deen is a pretty humble guy. I don’t doubt that other drummers can sing while playing, but singing the Steve Perry catalog is a feat. Any Journey song I’ve seen Deen perform, I’m blown away by the breath support and sustain, as well as his range. I don’t doubt you sang wonderfully as a kid, but I don’t think it’s a fair comparison to someone who, at the time of this recording, is around 55. Your story kind of reminds me of the quarterback who looks back on his touchdown pass in a high school championship game. Lol
When Greg left Journey and Steve Perry’s ego took over it was the beginning of the end. This song is amazing and shows how great journey could have been. Instead they turned into a sappy ballad machine.
I’ve been saying that for years, only to be met with arguments about album sales and their increase in fame when Escape came out, and beyond…my response is always the same…if you want sappy songs with catchy lyrics that teen girls emote to on prom night, have at it…but if you want melodic classic rock, with great musicians that compliment one another, then pre-Escape Journey is for you…for the record, I do think that Escape was a solid, radio-friendly record, but Infinity and their earlier work was better…the Rolle/Perry combo was great
Not sure if it was Perry’s ego or something else, but things definitely changed. But, I still rank the Steve Perry era as one of the top rock acts of all time. Steve knew when to quit too I think. This lineup here sounds incredible though.
dean is the most humble down to earth musician ,he owns his demons and isnt afraid to.say he is just like eveeyone else fallible ,glad to see him in full strength doin.what he does best btw awsome drummer indeed
WHY is someone besides Greg Rolie playing the intro piano part to this classic song? And WHY are "Cell Phone Videos" all the rage when they are crappy quality?
Time to pull Dean back in the group now that the other two were kicked out of the band. Bring in this bass player and have Greg R and Johnathan Cain do piano and synth and let Greg sing and play hammond organ.
Agree about Cain. At this show they had a multi instrumentalist stage right back in the shadows. He did the piano part for this song. I never noticed him until I watched my video because he never had any lighting. Hope to get a "Spaceman" next tour.
Greg Rolie can do everything and anything. While he is inducted TWICE jn RRHOF, i have yet to wait for Phil Collins, as solo artist and or Genesis band
Ross Valory, original bassist, is in the current line up, but I think they will not be playing any numbers from the first (superior) three albums. Checking setlistfm, original songs will be played only in the Journey Through Time line up.
Dean must be always conflicted...front man or awesome drummer. Yes, he can be both but the biz was never geared towards singing drummers (yes I know...Levon, Don Henley, Phil..)
It happens to every guitar player at some point. Your brain is on autopilot and then sometimes you start thinking about things, that's when it happens.
Gregg is playing on the keyboards, but they have a supporting musician in the background shadows stage right. He plays keyboards and guitar. I didn’t know he was there until closing bows. Then I saw him on my videos. If I knew he was there I would have zoomed in on him at certain times. Oh well. Still a great show.
@@whittington72 - Exactly, guitarforlife. Which is why wildlife officials were surprised when both Deen and the bison tested negative for meth. So that part was a wash. Each scored a solid "C" on the Math and rectal exams.

I'd love to see this lineup. Deen sounds incredible and it still amazes me how someone can be playing drums and singing so well. Stamina!
