- William Mullally sits down with Jon Favreau, director of The Lion King and showrunner of the upcoming Star Wars mega-series The Mandalorian, about his discussions with George Lucas, Lion King's photorealism issue, and passing on humanity's wisdom to the next generation.
3:32 George Lucas' advice.
Thank you!
Mvp.
Much appreciated, friend 👍
You da best
Youre a fucking hero. AINT NOBODY trying to hear the rest.
Everything feels safe and secure in Jons hands . What a respectable guy
Calling it in 6 months yo a year #metoo accusation incoming guaranteed
@@Scott90314 sadly thats how it goes. Women would say anything for clout.
@@dominicwilliamson7912 certainly appears that way doesn't it. Who knows maybe enough men will realize that their good intentions are wasted on the majority of women. Unchecked power breeds corruption.
@@Scott90314 agreed
Favreau makes it all sound so simple. He’s a genius.
This is the way.
It's suppose to be simple.
He has spoken
The interviewer left so abruptly because he had to go look in the mirror and cry after hearing such wise and beautiful words bespoke to him.
thats not what bespoke means
@@MrFiddleedee that’s not how the force works!
Jon is going to save the Star wars universe
J S did jj write the force awakens though or just direct?
too late for that after episode 9 direct stream only
As far as I’m concerned he saved the Star Wars universe the first five minutes of the Mandolorian episode 1
The lady that directed the 3rd episode of the Mandorlian is going to be at the helm of the Obi Wan show, now im getting excited for that one too
@hksrb25s16 - Respectfully, Star Wars is beyond saving in my eyes.
See what happens when you listen to george? People actually like your take on star wars.
I doubt people would listen to Tolkien himself if he were still alive.
George is a great story teller and creative visionary. He just lacks in two important aspects as a film maker and he admits not being good at one and admits not liking the other. George Lucas admits he isn't good with dialog and doesn't like directing. I don't think it is any mistake the Star Wars movie often regarded as the best didn't have Lucas as the director, and someone else wrote the final screen play. People say Lucas was a control freak when making the Prequels, but he actually tried to recruit directors and screen writers for those movies and all turned him down. If you want amazing stories and creative visuals George is your man.
Can’t deny they should have used his out lines! Jesus. 🤯🤯🤯🤡🤡🤡🌍🌍
George would have killed it with the prequels if he had been willing to compromise more.
hope dies i like kathleens movies
The reign of Darth Kennedus is near its end, master jedi Favreau is the way.
Lol
"Conveying emotion through storytelling" ....the lost art Favreau has embraced
I CRY! Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are our only hope!!!!!!
Agreed
"...you see the next generation coming up and you relate more to Mufasa than you do to Simba..."
Man, as 40 years old guy with a 2.5 year old daughter, this is so true. I recently got Disney Plus and watched some of my old favorites, The Lion King being one of them. I hadn't seen it in years and this time I was watching it with my daughter. Everything Mufasa was trying to teach Simba took on a completely different tone to me because now I can better understand how important it was to Mufasa to impart those lessons to his child.
Don't listen to Kathleen Kennedy and Don't do what Rian Johnson would do.
yew 2oob that women is crazy she needs to GO what don’t they see that the people don’t like her
And listen to jon favreau a far better producer
He has too, that is his boss on the project. She said yes to the project
She already did
so the mandalorian is shit too by that logic, huh?
This is the difference between the film-makers and the TV show makers: they care enough to talk to the creator.
PredatorWookiee that makes no sense at all
David Benioff and DB Weiss don't agree with you
They both talked with Lucas
George Lucas's advice:
"Jar Jar is the key to all of this"
If we can get him working, cause he's the funniest character that we ever had

In context, he was talking about believable CGI characters. Jar Jar being the key to that.
@DERREN MICHELL a dumb shit
A lot of comments on the answers, but I have to give praise on the questions.
They were genuine and thought provoking questions, and clearly targeted research of the interviewee.
Kudos
Children who are coming of age.
If you don't consider yourself a child coming of age at 60, you're unwilling to learn.
This isn't about space wizards, cartoon lions, hyenas or laser swords. It's about universal themes of how to deal with life, relationships and action through adversity.
I wish more people understood this. So many couldn't understand why there was such an uproar about the Last Jedi...but I told someone "they are messing with the pillars of reality" Star Wars (and other 'timeless" tales) tells us the deep truth of our core mythologies and WHY we struggle forward when times get tough. I was 3 years old and saw Star Wars in a drive in theater. It has influenced me as a ideal ever since. Great comment Sam Hale! Thank you!
Nah. It's a sci fi fantasy adventure yarn that just kept sucking after 1983.
It's a shame the new sequel films don't take on any of these themes
And Rey has no adversity. That is why she fails.
@@JetEngine787 Well, she does have adversity, but it's the narrative and not her willpower that overcome it.
Adversity in itself isn't hard to come by. The difficult thing is not only overcoming it, but HOW you overcome it.
John has been very smart and played the long game with Disney which has paid off. Good for him.

"Avoid all the hardship but garner all the wisdom"
Jon please only do Star Wars movies from now on. They really need your help.
Man that ending was really heartwarming
Before: George Lucas is destroying everything that’s good about Star Wars and can’t be trusted with his own franchise!
Now: HELP US, GEORGE LUCAS!!! YOU ARE OUR ONLY HOPE!!
If Disney had given Star Wars to Favreau and Filoni, admitted Star Wars junkies, can you imagine how great the trilogy would have been? Instead, we got Kennedy and that fan-hating idiot, Rian Johnson, and it has turned out horribly. I fear the devastation is complete.
There is a reason that George Lucas chose Kathleen Kennedy as his, "spiritual successor," when handing over Lucasfilm to Disney.
She didn't just appear one day, out of the blue. Her filmography goes back DECADES, and the library of films she's directly, (and indirectly,) responsible for Producing is literally the movie playlist of my generation's fondest childhood nostalgic memories!

Not everyone is a fan of some of the choices Lucasfilm has made, (obviously,) especially since it's been under the Disney banner, but there were just as many people, if not more, angry with George Lucas himself after the prequels came out!
Yes, Dave Filoni knows Star Wars better than virtually everybody at Lucasfilm nowadays, but tell me you don't think some of those movies are the best EVER made, and don't fill you with overwhelming nostalgia for your childhood, and I'll call you a LIAR. 😂👍
@@twstf8905 and she betrayed him and starting dictating the plays, not from a place of creativity (she was a producer under Lucas, not a creator), but from her foaming at the mouth identity politics.
TWSTF 8 that what makes it worst about what has happened. When Kathleen was hand picked by George I was happy for all of those reasons you listed. She has been with him for a long time. If you look at the track records since, Dave Filoni has done better for Star Wars. He was hand picked by George to run the cartoons. He has been incorporating a lot of the fan favorites from legends into those cartoons. He is a true fan on the inside.
@@DaFrenchOne Let us not forget that George was a producer and creative advisor through the complete running of "The Clone Wars". Filoni and his writing team would constantly go to him for advice and his opinion on things. That influence is not to be underestimated.
I think the force awakens was an acceptable movie with the exception being that Rey was a lazily written character.
But in regards to Rian Johnson, i dont know what they were thinking hiring him for star wars. He did not deserve that film in any regard.
Excellent interview with thoughtful and considered questions. Kudos. Jon is as always awesome.
Jon really stands out to me. He's the clear choice. I liked some of Shannara, but it trailed off. I was already a fan of his
This really wasn't about How Jon aproaches Star Wars but how he tells stories, using advice he got from George Lucas about storytelling. Star Wars is mentioned very briefly.
That’s the whole point. He even mentioned Joseph Campbell too, it’s perfect.
Nice interviewer, and super nice Jon Favreau as always what a legend. How busy must he be rn lol
"It's about imparting your wisdom without any of the hardship..."
I want to see more Jawas disintegrated
Lucas and Favreau! Great minds think alike. There's still hope for Star Wars this man can make that happen!
he starts talking about George Lucas @3:30
Best advice George could give is this... “Never go to far in a few places.”
Wow. That was deep. Awesome interview
Thank you sir for saving Star Wars!
the way he shifted to promote lion king though
Well it is an interview for the Lion King.
Bruh moment here
He can’t keep talking about Star Wars when he is interviewed for lion king
I'm supporting the mandalorian series ✊
So am I. Love Jon and Dave work. Also pascal's acting
It's so weird how the movie Babe inspired Jon Farvreau
Thank you JF for what you did for SW
Favreau shares some really interesting insights, which I think is testament to good, thought provoking questions. Great interview.
Love that so many brilliant filmmakers are becoming a part of the next generation of Star Wars.
Jon knows how to cook so I respect him. He understands the layers and detail in each story. Like a dish.
What a great guy, beautifully put in words what the essence of these stories entail. I hope Lucasfilms will do more projects with him.
John Foo they for sure will
This guy is my new hero
Jon, Dave and George are the holy trinity of star wars.
For a second I thought this video was from the 90s! William and the background just looks so much like that time
You can tell the difference between a show created by passionate fans with a creative vision and indie hacks who's one and only shtick is "subverting expectations."
"DON'T BE LIKE KENNEDY!"
Such a well spoken individual.
I just cant grasp the fact that they are ending the Skywalker saga without Jon's help. They should have given him the director role for all 3 movies.
Thank you John
Jon Favreau might be the leader of Disney one day lets be honest he has saved Disney with marvel and Disney live movies and soon Star Wars I can't wait tell that day comes
At first I thought The Mandalorian should have been just like Rogue one, but now I get it and I appreciate it.
I know 2 people that have worked with Favreu , and apparently he doesn’t do much to anything on SET. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but apparently he takes the credit for a-lot of other peoples work. But maybe its his ability to get good people which is a strength, not weakness.
Great short interview
What a wonderful human being.
"Oh my, Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau! You're the only hope now!" except they're from Disney and they now work on Star Wars because of Disney, and anything that is part of Disney is institutionalized.
His advice... "Dave is a Sith Lord..."
👍👍👍 great I honor you George
Happy learned from the best
Favreau is an example of what to do in Hollywood. This man is a legend
Why didn’t the director of Cats took this advice?
God I wish he did the sequel trilogy
How did this guy start the MCU and bring back star wars to a watchable place, Jon is the fucking man
This is the way.
This is the way.
Well said, sir!
Nice interview
Jon Favreau, please live forever
Thank you John favreau. You’re saving a franchise that had a dismal future before you came along. The moment Disney deviated from Joseph Campbell is the moment Star Wars lost its soul. The mandalorian is bringing it back.
Kathleen Kennedy, heard George Lucas talk about Joseph Campbell and the point that audiences identify with heroes who must grow into their role, the heroes journey is important to people because heroes aren’t born with their skill. it must be built through hard work, training, sometimes failure... she then went and did the exact opposite of what George said. And now we have this debacle on our hands.
This man is a national treasure.
I have spoken.
You have horrible taste.
I don't need to use cheesy TV quotes to know that.
Jon is a very intelligent and considerate individual
Damn. That was beautiful
If Disney funds these guys to tell the inbetween stories of the OT and then what happened between OT and sequels it could be incredible. If they can keep that original Starwars Mandalorian style it could be insanely cool.
@@Theosake nah. Most fans want more Luke and Han stuff. If Disney acquired rights to the Bible they would rewrite it with Mary as the true son of God and she'd save herself from the cross and beat Herod with her bare hands
He has spoken.
I really like Favreau as an director and as an actor as well. Happy is a funny character.
I loved The Lion King 2019!!!
I feel like Jon is the next great story teller for mainstream movies. The next 20 years are his as far as Star Wars goes imo.
Jon Favreau is the best thing to happen to Star Wars since the Clone Wars cartoon.
Jon has spoken
if this wasn't a promo for the "live action" lion king it would be a perfect video
Gotta love Happy
of course Mandalorian is better than anything Disney made for Star Wars because the creators actually value George Lucas and took his advice thank you Jon
What I want to know is how they managed to cast Duke Ellington in the Mandelorian.
Don’t try to subvert expectations....
Because a fans primary expectation is that they see a good story.
badass we need him for starwars
3:33 for those of you looking for the subject matter of this video's title.
thoughtful guy
Interviewer looks exactly like a young Francis Ford Coppola!!!!
What generational lesson has Rey or Kylo Ren conveyed in the sequel trilogy? What hero's journey of tumult or peril has Rey experienced that caused her to lean on past generations to help her? Is Luke the Mufasa type character in TLJ? Because the questions were not answered in the storytelling of the sequel trilogy, Disney Star Wars has lost its way...
people don't know that Bob Igar really did make Disney what it is today
How is this man working for the same company as Kathleen Kennedy is beyond me. Seems like he has a completely different mind set then the corporate Disney agenda today.
Jon is the New Prince of Disney
The only thing that I hate in Mandalorian is that it is exclusive for USA and it will never come to my country. (Ukraine)
Listen, I love Jon, but The Lion King was a complete cash-grab. As for Star Wars, Disney has completely f*cked the series. They should have given the series to Dave and Jon immediately, not down the road.
@CommonSense8102 didnt you said the same thing to the last guy
@CommonSense8102 true and loyal as in it was a copy paste job?
George Lucas is an amazing world builder he just couldn't put it into a script, old George with a filter he always can churn out something really good.
Sheeeeesh 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Don't tell these fans that Kathleen Kennedy was involved with this, or else they might then decide that they hate it.
Also, let's be honest that George giving advice was the right call. If he directed it, we'd be in real trouble.
So what happened to Luke in episode 8 was🤔????

casp175a what?
@@tomgriffiths2622 he died in last jedi
casp175a given the interview an't the Joseph Campbell talk of the hero's journey and all the other stuff he was telling that George told him. Doesn't sound like anything that happened in 8 with Luke. Seems more like an inverse of the hero's journey. Yet another reason/example why 8 sucks

Probably another animal based movie like bambi
@@paris5663 I was guessing either Brother Bear or Tarzan
the 'realistic' CGI animals don't work as good with human voices as the hand drawn animated characters do. You believe the animated characters much more than the CGI ones. Just an observation
