Lol learning about politics in other European countries is so baffling. In Norway we have a minority government with few issues. Other than covid rules, Norwegian media doesn't really talk a lot about Norwegian politics, they actually talk more about American politics.

5-10 are for local news (murder, famous people, mafia, ecc...)

and maybe some addendums at the end, mostly paid promotions for music of movies
this would be a normal schedule, if something important happens in the world it would be place before of after the politics, but it's rarer, and definitely not a daily occurrence .

Technically speaking, there is no difference between the technocrats and others, we don't vote for the prime minister here in Italy, we vote for the parties, then they agree on a prime minister, and can agree again later on a different prime minister. This is different than the USA and maybe also the UK. So, if the parties agrees that I am the new prime minister, I'll be the new prime minister, even if people never heard of me before, cause people never voted for Berlusconi or for Renzi or for me, they voted for the parties that then agreed and formed a majority around one name. What defines a technocrat, in this context, is that they are able to do something and proved it, and are called for that reason, while politicians are only able to get votes.

This is all correct, but it's not true that there is no difference between a technocrat and a political minister, as the latter is a member of a political party and responds to it in terms of policies. While a technocrat is "free" from political restrictions (in theory) hence the widely unlikely coalitions behind them.

technically is the president who appoints the prime minister, but the PM still has to get a trust vote from the parliament.
In the uk is the same, in general elections you vote for the party that represents you the best-what really changes is the voting system, called First Past The Post (FPTP) which basically allows the majority of seats in the parliament to the same two parties, Conservatives and Labours
Excluding the almost-21-years-long Mussolini's dictatorial government, from its very foundation in 1861 to today Italy had 130 governments, meaning the average duration of an Italian government is only 1 year and 25 days circa and, of course, no Italian republican government ever lasted one whole legislature.
So yeah, we are used to it. Welcome to Italian politics, I guess.

Draghi may have not direct involvement in politics, but he has a long history of dealing with politicians, so believe me, he is in no danger.
His stature alone makes look most of the politicians in the parliament like little children.
Also, italian politicians like to yell and complain in front of cameras, but it's all talk.
Evidence of this: Mario Monti was critized and blamed in front of cameras, but his reforms got up to 90% approval in the parliament.

Political crises and governments are still no biggie. The point is always on the number of legislations, which is a thing most of foreigners don't get.
Meaning: you can change the government even 5 times in 5 years, but the legislation is one, and the overall work is carried by each single parts.
You abroad just understand "oh it's a drama" because you don't get the complexity of Italian Constitution mixed to how phony on average Italian Politicians are (all sides) and you think "oh well, what an unstable political country" while actually nothing big happens.
Same goes with Belgium, just worse, but I don't remember Belgium nor Italy becoming like a 2nd World Country like half of EU still is today....

In Slovenia, where I live and is a neighboring country of Italy, we change governments every 2 years. But not much difference happens with a change of government. Italy parliament is different than the UK or the USA ones: you never actually vote the government, but just the parliament composition. The government policies are shaped by which party is keeping the government up. So in a sense, the government is always the representant of most people, but rarely of a political majority (this always means that no one is ever happy with it, by the way).
So, while the parliament is, or should be, the country representation, the government should always act as technical.
Now, this is quite a complicated system, and even most Italians do not understand it, but Italy changing government is less of a big deal than most other countries.

As an Italian, I think you had the whole situation precisely depicted.
I will add a few things: my opinion is that a technocratic PM is just an easy scapegoat for the Italian parties. Right now we have a new law that has halved the number of parliamentarians, effective from the next election: so you can see that every single one of them knows that there is a real chance they won't be in parliament after the next election, even if they happen to be in the winning party.
So, that's why many parties backtracked (Lega and 5 stars above all).
With a technocratic government they can make the parliament last a bit longer, holding power and money, and if something goes wrong they will blame it on Draghi.
"Oh that terrible policy that you people really dislike? That wasn't us! That was totally Mario Draghi's fault! (nevermind that the policy was approved by the parliament with our party members vote)".
This is exactly what happened with Mario Monti in 2011. He was called because the financial situation of Italy was disastrous, so Berlusconi was more or less forced to resign and Monti was appointed. He then went on making very harsh measures on pension, health care and so on, and the citizens were really angry about them. I won't say if those policies were right or wrong or a necessary evil, but it's a fact that many of the politicians that later on criticized them were the ones (or were in the same party) that approved the policies in the first place.
Another thing about elections during a pandemic: many states did them anyway, and even in Italy we are going to have some local or regional elections, but I think in this case the problem isn't just the contagion that goes on, is that public gatherings for speeches and such should be restricted or heavily regulated, and more than that the moment is crucial to get the funds from Europe and to decide how to use them: we can't afford to have a dying government while this happens, both for political and practical reasons.
During electoral campaigns politicians are focused (more than as usual...) on being re-elected and the government in that situation can only manage the current affairs and not launch any major policy

This has been happening every 2 or 3 years here in Italy, it's routine.
Though we did lose Conte as PM who had 60% approval ratings when he left which is unheared of in Italy.
As an Italian, I really enjoy a technical government. I was (and I still am) very afraid that our incompetent government will make a mess, forcing the EU to stop the funds that can save my country.
I hope that Draghi as an economist and a superpartes technician will do the right thing and I love that he already shuts up the parties that came to him with requests and asked for departments.
He said that he is not here to contract with the parties, and find absurd their requests and the facts that they are doing those requests, "I'm here to explain you all the plan and that's it."

An immigrant living in Italy since early ‘90 (Italy’s economic peak). If it was down to me, I’d give Italy’s government only to technocrats. The problem is all parties no matter the colour, more on the right wing btw, have been on a short term promisses frenzy for decades now.

I agree, I'd suggest all countries should be led by experts, appointed by a president and confirmed by a parliament, and the prime minister specifically should be appointed for short periods based on what the country needs currently. In a pandemic? The prime minister is someone educated and skilled in responding to a public health crisis. Need economic boost? An economist will lead. Schools are crumbling? Appoint somebody who has done perhaps regional work in reviving educational structures.
There's literally no point in having a government with ministers who in many cases don't know what they're doing, which has been happening a lot with the recent rise of populist (as a Slovak, I've been watching this happen for a while now).
But like Mario, the princess is moved to the next level... so Italy’s mess will not stop in one level...

The italian media is going insane elevating Draghi to basically god status. Not just his resume as ECB president, but small crazy stuff like "he doesn't tweet, he must be a good person" or "look at how many newspapers he reads" or "look at his dogs, what a nice guy!".It's ridiculous how much they're hyping him up. Btw, you have done a great job at illustrating some of the aspect of italians politics, but I have to make a big correction: no one in Italy considered Conte a technocratic leader, he was a somewhat neutral figure that would be prime minister in a government coalition between 2 very different parties. For the whole duration of his two terms (at least pre-covid crisis) his critics called him a marionette, not the kind of critique you would expect directed at a technocratic leader. And all the ministers were picked in the coalition parties, while a true technocratic government usually has ministers picked outside of the political world, especially for positions like the minister of economy.

Nah dude. Here that's just a technical term for when the country is in such a mess that no politician wants to be seen holding the ball while they fix it. In Italy political governments generally give way to technocratic ones when it's time to stop bickering and actually make changes. It's a bit of a shame, but it works. The new government isn't dependent on politics, so it has lots of room to manuevre. Remember, these aren't just a random think-tank ''panel of experts''. They're government ministers now.

The government crisis was not only on infrastructure, though it was one of the major points; the other major points were the "reddito di cittadinanza" (citizen's income) which was not wanted by Renzi, and the usage of the MES (ESM - european stability mechanism) which Renzi wanted to activate, to have more funds (in form of debt, obviously) - note that there were even more points of despute, but those were arguably the main ones. The silly thing is that italia viva "only" has 17 seats (of 312) in the senate and 13 / 897 seats in the CD, which though were needed to have a majority in the parliament.......
Also, I don't think that you can consider Giuseppe Conte as a 'technocratic' prime minister, he was part of the 5 star movement (the current major party in Italy) even before the beginning of the legislature, he had to negotiate both with the right wing lega and the left wing in the last mandate, but that doesn't make him a technocrat - which is, on the other hand, the case for Mario Draghi.

He mentioned that it was estimated that 30% to 40% of the capital in Italy would leave the country should Italy leave the EU and the Euro. People with money do not want to be invested in a currency that might not be very strong. Italy has a large deficit and historically speaking, the Lira wasn't a very strong currency, thus the flight of capital might be a real treat.
Not sure what the best solution is, but "leave the EU" will definitely have its downsides. Especially should Italy also leave the custom union, what the UK just did, leading to a lot more paperwork to cross the border with good. Although technically, the UK is still in a transition period when it comes to the custom union regarding to certain goods.
Don't know what the best solution is, but I am a bit critical about your proposal, as it will have some caveats.

I've always been under the impression that the word technocrat is almost always used in a positive context, although in Italy it might be different.
Also, it's not that technocracy is naturally better than regular people running in elections. Experts are not free from their own biases and can be blind to the larger effect of their decisions. At least common politicians need to fear the next elections and that's why they may be forced to try and save that unsalvageable power plant in the province, whereas a technocrat will simply shrug it all off, close the whole thing down and then act surprised when the former employees rally behind a neofascist force that will remove him from power.
People keep acting like pointing out the flaws of democracy is supposed to convince anybody the system's not worth fighting for. Nobody ever said that democracy is perfect but nobody else has been able to produce a system that gives you nearly enough control over who runs things. The love for technocrats has a lot to do with a love for dictators-typically, Europeans need one or two decades under an authoritarian rule to become the most zealous democrats around the world, that is until they will become bored with their democracy after another few decades and elect another strong man to lead them.

I love you folks, and I love and appreciate this channel. I've been here since the original TLDR channel had just 15,000 subscribers.
I ask you please, for the love of Quob, the flying spaghetti monster, do better ad placement. They keep interrupting at key moments, and it really destroys the watching/listening experience. You all are young and brilliant, and I know you can make it better.
Will he be able to restructure Italy's debt to sustainable levels? Will he be able to return Italian industry to competitiveness? Will he be able to reverse the aging Italian population? Will he be able to stop deep rooted political corruption? If the answer to these questions is yes, then he will save Italy. Otherwise no. I am not optimistic of his chances. If he is an honest operator, as soon as he upsets too many vested interests he will be gone, irrespective of his capabilities.
Not saying that I disagree but when you think about it that way, it really sounds like a dead end. So what would the solution be?
@@hmthisisit I do not know. I expect things will work out in the end, but when that may be and just how is open to much speculation and debate. People talk of QuItaly as a solution to Italy's problems, but I think they are much more deep rooted than simply membership of the EU and the Eurozone. What is clear though is that the current situation in Italy (and elsewhere) is unsustainable and the status quo will break. It may sound off the wall, I know, but I think the long term solution is not Italy leaving the EU, though that may help, but the breakdown of Italy into its pre-unification states. Since its inception, the Italian state does not appear to me to ever have been a raging success

@@ripp102 I am not suggesting that Italy should do this but given that the country is in a right mess and has no reasonable plan to get out of it, this is may be what actually happens in the long term. Italy has been many states in the past and comparatively more successful when that was the case And I do not think Italy is unique in this regard. The US springs to mind, to say nothing of the UK. Bear in mind the global trend since the end of WWII has been an increase in the number of nations on the earth, not a decrease. When the state fails, alternatives arise.

And, to this, I'd like to add that it's not politicians who are ruining Italy. The fault belongs to Italians, who vote clowns to lead our country. Italians deserve the politicians they vote and must accept the consequences.

You could say that both legislative and executive power in Italy are held by the Parliament, the delegation of executive power to one government is then subject to the ever shifting system of political bargaining between the many different parties
