  • Today I am back on the Kent coast at one of my favourite British seaside towns in the UK - Margate!
    Join me on this 4K walking tour around the old town, the spooky caves and along the seafront to see exactly why Time Out named Margate as one of the top places to visit in 2023.
    From the old-school seafront arcades to the hipster indoor markets and coffee shops, there really is something for everyone here.
    My name is Jack and I’m exploring the UK, making travel vlogs as I go. I’d be so grateful for your support, so please do like the video, leave a comment and subscribe to my channel here - youtube.com/@j...

    This is where my mother grew up in the 1940s. Her father managed 1 of the hotels. She would bring me here in the 1980s to explore as a child. A lot of great memories. I remember that arcade!! Thank you for uploading 😀

    I grew up in Margate but left when I was 21 way back in 1976! It was a great place to grow up in, but during the 80/90s it became a decayed seaside town, like many at that time with the arrival of cheap package holidays to Spain. I see that High St still has loads of boarded up shops. Nice to see the harbour area gentrified now. Do try visiting Whitstable on the Kent coast, that's a little gem of a town!

      Thanks so much for your comment, it’s great to hear from someone who grew up there, I would’ve loved to see it in the 70s! I’m going back in a few weeks to do a separate video on Dreamland, which again is refurbished now but was basically derelict for over 10 years!
      Whitstable is definitely on my list of places to visit next! Thanks again

    Great vlog of Margate Jack. The bit where you couldn't get down use to be a theater, called
    The Winter Gardens in Margate that closed in 2022. The Turner Contemporary also does a bit of music as well on artists in a studio recording and doing voice warm ups as well.

    Got to love English seaside towns, always a great place to be but always quite a bit shit and run down. I went a couple of years ago with Justin and a few others on a very busy day, the beach was great, also the little gentrified bit where we all had pizza. I think the big derelict closed off bit was a Lido or something? It's funny, people will complain about somewhere being run down, but then complain about things being done up and 'gentrified' like, which do you want? Boarded up and closed or open and charging £3.00 for a bottle of water

    • @jackryanmiller
      @jackryanmiller  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha ha totally agree man but I love the run down parts. It what makes it special. This and Folkestone are my new favourites because they have a hipster bit but then more run down backstreets

  • @gman1353
    @gman1353 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I went to Margate a lot when I was younger. It was an Ok place. We went for the long walks. The downside at the time was the violence going home on the train which I saw plenty and unfortunately up close. You saw the rot set in virtually over night by the 90’s, with the type of people that visited and the lack of maintenance along the sea front by the council. Yes they have a Turner gallery now, or a convenient place to go to the toilet and a good chippie, but the last time I visited a few years ago I saw a couple of people openly injecting heroin near the station in front of passing tourists and the locals I saw were clearly poor. I don’t see any “hipsters” there. I did see a man must have been late seventies completely covered in tattoos from head to toe though.
    Not a place I would rush back to. I prefer Broadstairs and Herne Bay.

    Was born margate and use to be nice but like most places over yrs alot has changed.
    It is very depressing & has caused me to suffer with depression, seeing people in small groups drinking alcohol near Sheldons pub & same up by church in Cliftonville.
    Seeing lot more rubbish on streets as well, people throwing out furniture pieces where ever they are able to.
    Just not safe place anymore, well I myself didn't feel safe. 5:07
    But the beach I do miss as moved away 3 yrs ago as well.
    as visiting tudor house & caves.

    If you want to get depressed, like the sight of fat women smoking and covered in tattoos, the stench of seaweed and body odour (and weed) then this is the place. An art gallery *Turner centre) where even the staff are bored and town all day, over-priced fish and chips, seagulls picking shit out the bins everywhere and men with no hair and beer guts splayed out of the pubs. A right royal khaze.

      You forgot to mention the possibility of tidal flooding if you buy property there near the seafront. Whilst it’s nice in summer it must be dreary in wintertime when storms hit. Although plenty of Londoners moving there, buying up properties and renting spare rooms out on Airbnb. Thanet council is reclaiming a lot of Victorian housing in Cliftonville from houses with multiple occupants, hoping new buyers can turn them into family homes. I bet home insurance for a house overlooking the seafront must cost a bit, with some housing uninsurable due to flooding caused by tides and sewage. I like Margate and would like living there if none of those problems, alongside antisocial behaviour at night existed.
