This was 14 years ago... your comment was 9 years ago... today is yesterday's tomorrow... I guess I don't have a point, but I wonder what he sounds like now. xo
I think Morrissey does the arrangements in such a way to separate them from Marr's way of doing the songs, and while it's not awful, This Charming Man was not meant to be played like a pop-punk song.
The guitar is synced with the bass riff from the original. The bass riff was one of my first songs I learned so I'm happy. People can do different versions of songs. But yes I would love to see Moz and Marr together again. That guitar riff is iconic with Moz's heavenly voice.
He's actually quite straight on that one. 'You can go and buy my new album, however there are some songs for those who couldn't shouldn't and musn't'... He knows...
this is not the best version of this charming man but it is perfectly arranged. all you hypocrites should know that mozza's band is quite good, amazing musicians.and don't forget the fact that boorer and tobias have been part of his crew for a long time. show some respect.
Can't quite understand why everyone is having a go at the guitarist and the band, do you honestly think that Morrissey wanted it played like the original and the band forced him to do it this way?! The guitarist is decent and could have played it closer to the original like they do for other Smiths songs but Morrissey obviously wanted something different!
Nah we don't, we just have the right to our opinions. I for one think this arrangement is ridiculous and obnoxious on its own, regardless of the smiths version or any other for that matter, and this has nothing to do with my soul being dirty it's just an opinion based on aesthetic perception, and it's okay, you state yours, everyone one else state theirs if they want, we move on with our lives while having learned a valuable lesson about what others like or dislike.

I gotta say I love this version...it was the opener last time I saw him and it kicked the show off in really cool manner...but I get what ya mean...Marr is one of the greatest guitarists E V E R!
This is a good version! I agree with the previous comments, that it would be boring it they tried to just copy the smiths version. It's amazing how fresh the smiths songs still are, on the albums and especially live. I love that Morrissey sings the old Smiths songs! I think we are lucky that he does.
I do like this version. It doesn't try to compete with the original versions and i think it's where Mozza is right now, energized and vital. I'd slag off the audience but that would be sour grapes because i couldn't get a ticket.
Professional courtesy, I would imagine. It is Marr's riff and it is so unbelievably iconic that, to do it without Marr, makes it sound/look like a cover version. Marr doesn't tend to play TCM either as it is nothing without Morrissey's vocals, and also without Marr's riff. Marr plays Bigmouth, how soon and There is a light often, but not tcm.
I wish someone would fix this and compile Morissey's voice here with Marr's current version of the song. Other than that, I suspect Morissey doesn't have the legal rights to play the instrumental part of the song, which is credited to Marr.
This new version is being bashed way too much. Yeah, the original is legendary, but this new version is fun and bouncy. I listened to This Charming Man way too much back when I first heard it. This new one makes it feel fresh again. :-)
@TheModCon AGREED 100% wow someone who's actually NOT out of their mind on here :) But seriously I couldn't agree with you more, the whole point of covering a song whether it be or not be a song from your former band is to do something different with it i.e. make it your own. Unless of course you're in a tribute/cover band. I think the band is more than capable of cloning the the original version if that was the intent. Whether or not one likes this version, well that's irrelevant.
Off to see Moz at the weekend....love him to bits but the fact remains a certain Mr Marr wrote banging tunes that fitted hand in glove with his lyrics....no other musician came close apart from a certain Mr Reilly !
I am a guitarist, and I can say that when johnny marr plays guitar, I fucking shut up because I don't know how the fuck he's producing that beautiful sound of his. I seriously don't even try, I should but I think it would be too much hard work. I can play along with bitches brew, and everything else, but whatever rockabilly thing marr does, I obviously don't know where to even start. marr is and was seriously brilliant. now let's cut all the shit and have a smiths reunion, yah?
A statement I heard years ago about the riffs that killed Elvis meaning how rock/pop etc guitar playing/riffs have come since them good ol EP days. This particular version of the song as oppose to original sounds light years away. Not good or bad just different. And I think adfro7 stated it better and quite succinctly.
@LottaRadiohead You mean the guitar-player doesn't make his job? Well, I saw Morrissey in Vienna 2009 and must say, it was great, they also started with "this charming man"! But hey, I am no guitar specialist, so maybe I am not able to hear anything he plays wrong... greetings from Austria, and be a charming girl ;-)
The guitars didn't butcher it, but more was actually missing. I did not hear the bass player either play or cut through with the lines that gave the original recording much of its character.
I really would like to see Johnny and Morrissey playing together again, even if was just for this song.
he's still got that wonderful voice :)
Why is Moz backed by a skate-punk band?
hahahaha
too jokes
It was the most 2009 thing possible
Not skate punk. More like pop punk.
just thinking that, IoI
appreciate the fact the guitarist didn't try Marrs riff. Sensible.
It's not hard to play, if the guy is a professional musician he should be able to pull it off. He didn't play it probably because of copyright issues
@@geovaniraffaelli4508 if morrisey gave permission it would be fine i think, it part of the band and he was part of it
@@geovaniraffaelli4508 Prob not copyright, they had a specific mood they wanted for this tour to fit the album.
@@xanthelinhs2143 Yeah, they thought a shitty mood would fit the tour perfectly
This is appalling. Total sacrilege!
It's like watching a completely different person after seeing him in the 80's performing this, but it's still Morrissey.
he still sounds AMAZING here
@@bchristopher7584 I certainly agree that *he* does, but the band don't!
This was 14 years ago... your comment was 9 years ago... today is yesterday's tomorrow... I guess I don't have a point, but I wonder what he sounds like now. xo
He is better here.
@@sweetnuthin his voice is better here, but the awful band ruins this version, compared to the original
Moz's voice still resonates loud and clear. He is a perfectionist!!
Johnny Marr: gives us one of the most iconic guitar lines in history
this guy: best I can do is power chords
I think Morrissey does the arrangements in such a way to separate them from Marr's way of doing the songs, and while it's not awful, This Charming Man was not meant to be played like a pop-punk song.
It's a shame it's so different
But he still sounds flawless
It's just the music is the problem
Sounds like the strokes lmao
The guitar is synced with the bass riff from the original. The bass riff was one of my first songs I learned so I'm happy. People can do different versions of songs. But yes I would love to see Moz and Marr together again. That guitar riff is iconic with Moz's heavenly voice.
The guitars for this version sounds like the ones on Death Cab for Cutie's cover.
Awesome energy in this version
Morrissey’s voice is incredible. But Johnny Marr’s band is so much better!
This song, if not sang by Morrissey, is nothing
@@beteakoopelktxikia7934 this song, without Marr, is nothing. just listen to this crap
Dylan Kelly Morrisey has a great voice - Marr is a musical genius. Says it all really
When listening to Marr and his bands full albums, I wouldn't say all that!...
Thats the thing, Morrissey still has the voice and Johnny Marr still has the skills

To be fair here. This is not The Smiths. I'm a huge Smiths fan. You people making awful comments have dirty souls.
no, it's Morrissey
Brandon Rojas-Gonzalez fully aware of that.
ok cool. but I still don't like this version

Always a pleasure listenting to his little comments between songs etc.
Been viewing this series of uploads, wow great and thanks for posting them.
Not believing how he keeps his voice

I personally think Morrissey is a charming man !
I agree
He's covering Death Cab for Cutie's cover of this song, which I don't think is a bad attempt at all
