I just went there in December last year, amazing place indeed and I touched the ball of the Black Madonna. Very easy to go there from Barcelona by train, the ticket includes all, train from Barcelona, rack rail train or cable car. It's very unfortunate because we cannot do rack rail and cable car combination, you can only choose one, either rack rail or cable car to go up from the foot of the mountain. It also inludes the rack rail to the top of the mountain from Montserrat, where once you reach to the top, you could do some great trekking around the mountain.

Hi, Thank you so much for the detailed guide on Montserrat! I wrote down everything you recommended and our family can't wait to visit Barcelona and a day trip to Montserrat!
By the way, "Combined ticket Trans Montserrat" in your description is all I need to get to Montserrat from Barcelona and back in terms of transportations including your recommended funicular rides, right? Just wanted to make sure before purchasing the tickets using your link.:). Do you personally recommend a cable car or a cog railway for a first time visitor to go up? Thank you!
Great video with useful info 👍🙏 We're going to stay overnight in Montserrat after a morning trip from Madrid. Appreciate idea what to do in early morning and evening in Montserrat. Thank you
Hi there Tony! Your travel guide videos are so informative and helpful! We always take time to watch them and take down notes. My husband and will be in Barcelona for a week and we're planning to visit Montserrat on Tuesday. I wonder if we still need to convert the vouchers we purchased online to an actual ticket at the tourist office before going to Montserrat? Thank you.
Thanks Tony, for another enjoyable video. 👍 Montserrat is in my bucket list, and I hope I get to visit soon . Your videos are really the best travel videos I’ve watched… very detailed and precise … 👍 👍 👍
Tony. Thank you for another great video. I already have Montserrat on my itinerary. I really appreciate all the info you provided on tickets and getting around. You're the best!
Another excellent video and advices again👍 I was just there a couple of weeks ago. Loved our visit to Monserrat! Had such a wonderful time in Barcelona, thanks to all your videos and valuable tips! Can’t wait for a return trip.
This was one of our two most memorial days on our June trip. We used the Trans Montserrat ticket without trouble. The voucher is exchanged for a ticket the R5 line ticket machine can validate. We did that at the tourist booth at the Placa de Catalunya the day before. This is important as you want to get on the first R5 that will meet the first cog railway or tram going up the mountain. This means leaving the Placa de Espanya at ~7:30 am. This plus getting the last cog or tram down the mountain will maximize your time there and you will need all of it. Trust us on this. We had a seat on the way there but it is likely you will be standing on the R5 all the way back. We did not see the choir but we knew they were on vacation. Check that schedule if this is important. The morning was at the Monastery (no line to see the Virgin) and down the Santa Cova, the afternoon up the Sant Joan for (2) good hikes. The recommended goat cheese desert is delicious - don't miss that. This went well because of the info provided from this video - and the willingness to get up early.
Hi Tony! I watched your videos before our visit last year and I’m still watching for our trip this August! Your videos are all helpful. Thank you so much! I am excited to visit and see Montserrat this time. Last time, it’s just me and my husband. This time, we have my mother in law and two of our kids. We love the train trips but this time, we’re hoping to go there by car so we get there earlier and we can do more with less people and hoping we save more since there’s more of us. What is your advice? We need a rental car for sure. Not sure about parking the car at the foot of Montserrat, parking fees, which ticket we need to buy if we are not using the regional train from Barcelona. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi Karen, we've never gone by car to Montserrat, but we understand your circumstances. You could go by car to the top of the mountain, where there is a paid car park. There is a risk it might be full, forcing you to park at a lower level (and a longer walk). Or park at the base of the mountain (free car park here maps.app.goo.gl/qivQzv8CFoLBP5tt5 ) and ride the cog railway to the top. You would need to buy a cog railway ticket, and tickets for whatever you intend to visit or ride at the top of the mountain.
We will be driving a car from Barcelona to Montserrat. Where do we park and how to return to car after going up the mountain? Thank you for such an informative video.
There's also a parking at Monistrol de Montserrat, one of the towns below the mountain, and it's just next to the station of the rack railway up to he monastery. You'd have to pay the rack railway, but the parking is free as far as I know :)
Love all you videos Tony. Very informative and straightforward. Do you have any new links to get to Monserrat? We will be vising Barcelona in February and I am having difficulties purchasing tickets. Thank you.
Hi Vicent. The funiculars in Montserrat are undergoing maintenance during January and February and for that reason the links have ceased temporarily to work - to prevent you to buying a pack you won't be able to use in full. In January and February we advise people to get their tickets for Montserrat at the ticket office at Plaza de España. All the best.
We are heading to Barcelona tomorrow and your videos are so helpful! Do I need to specify what day I plan to visit when I buy the Trans Montserrat ticket?
Thank you Tony, this made me more excited for my July Trip. From Montserrat Abbey, we also want to visit Saint Ignatius' Cave in Manresa. Barcelona-Montserrat-Manresa-Barcelona, how do we go about it via train?
Hi Diana, on the way back, once you reach the main railway line at Monistrol de Montserrat, instead of taking a train to Barcelona you will take an R5 train on the opposite direction and get off at Manresa Baixador and walk 10 minutes to Cueva de San Ignacio. But somehow it feels quite a rushed outing if you want to include Montserrat and Manresa on the same day.
Thank you! You’re video gave me a lot of the information that I was looking for concerning a day trip to Montserrat. I have one question. I will be in Barcelona in February. Is Montserrat worth visiting in the winter time? I am wondering if it will be too cool to enjoy the area or if any of the items are closed at that time(like the funicular)
Montserrat can be beautiful in winter time, for as long as the weather is nice on the day of your trip. But February is a time of the year when the funicular maintenance usually takes place, you should keep an eye on the information regarding the funicular.
Hi would you recommend a guided tour from Barcelona to Montserrat to get as much information on the sites? Thank you in advance I followed information you posted for our trip to Lisbon last year and very happy we did!
If you buy a guided tour, what you gain in terms of extra information you lose in terms of a hurried visit to Montserrat. You won't be able to do things on your own time. We would go on our own.
I am planning a trip to Barcelona in December. I am interested in exploring Montserrat during my visit. Can you offer insights into the typical weather conditions in Montserrat during December? I would like to be prepared for any specific climate considerations. I appreciate your time and assistance in advance providing this information.
Hello Tony!!! Thanks again for your very interesting videos!!! I am leaving tomorrow for Barcelona and am VERY excited!!!!! I planned three days in Sitges to finish our trip in a more relaxing mode before I watched your videos on day trips …😳 I think we will make a stop in Tarragona! I have a question but am not sure where to ask … if we are going to Sitges, witch train do you recommend we take? Thank you and have a great day!!!
Thank you so much for this complete set of super practical information! We were just hesitant on if to squeeze in Montserrat on the last day of our 3 days in Barcelona and this video makes us believe it might be a good idea. However we will have to get back to hotel in city center by 5-5:30 latest to catch a 8pm flight. If we try to get to Monserrat at around 10am, would we be able to be back at around 5? Thank you!
We always try to avoid combining a day trip with a flight departure. Many things can delay your trip back to Barcelona causing unnecessary stress. We wouldn't do Montserrat on the day of your departure.
Thanks for the useful info..can you please tell when Funicular resumes operation as you wrote earlier that it undergoes maintenance during January and February--is it from March1?Where to get this info and how to book Funicular in March? Thanks
Gracias for this detailed visit to Monserrat. However , I noticed Trans Monserrat Combo Tix doesn't include the Santa Cova Funicular. That said, I can buy the tix at the sight , right?
Hello, the Trans Montserrat pass does include the Santa Cova funicular, you can check the inclusions here bcnshop.barcelonaturisme.com/shopv3/en/product/616/trans-montserrat.html?o=h&w=3821-1444
Thank you Tony for another very practical video! I see that Trans Montserrat tickets now includes option for cable car or rack rail. Can we go up in Aeri and come down on rack? Else we will need to buy add'l seperate one-way ticket of either Aeri (7.5euro) or Rack (8.1 euros)?
Hi Calvin, in actual fact those options were always there. You have to choose one or another, you cannot combine both. So the solution would be as pointed out by you, by the Rack pack and pay a single trip on the Aeri (which is slightly cheaper). All the best!
Hola Tony thank you for this wonderful and informative video!I have purchased my tickets online and my question is is where do I exchange my online purchase voucher for an actual ticket? Is it located at the same information booth you mentioned in the video? Will i have to stand in line even if I have a purchase voucher? Muchas gracias!
Hi there, you will have received specific instructions with your purchase. Otherwise, check the webpage where you bought the tickets, the DETAILS AND MAP section, you will find those instructions there as well. We recommend exchanging the voucher a few days before traveling.
Tony, love your channel and can't wait to go to Barcelona and neighboring towns. I have a question, what is the name of the 20 minute one way walk once you get off the St Joan funicular? I thought it may be St. Jeroni as the sign is shown in your video but after some research, I don't believe it is St. Jeroni hike.
You said to make sure to get off at the last stop on the rack railway going down.. I thought there was only one stop to get off, the same one where you get on, can you p,ease clarify this as we are headed up in a few weeks and would like to know before we get there. Also you didn’t mention a ticket that includes lunch. This is what we bought, but it didn’t say where we can use it. Since you mentioned the restaurant on the mountain I have to assume that is were lunch will be. Thank you for all your videos, hey have been very helpful in planning out journey.
There is a map on the video where we show the location of the rack railway stations. We don't mention the ticket including lunch as we are not sure of its benefits, ask whenever you exchange the voucher for details. Most likely, the meal included will be at the cafeteria near the monastery.
Thank you very much for all your videos. You explain everything in detail. I do have one question about transportation to go to the Montserrat. Please explain to me whether or not it's free entrance. I need to buy a ticket online to enter Montserrat and the whole complex. Or is it enough to buy combo tickets for the train and cable cars? Mochos gracias.
Hi, if you buy a combo ticket, it will include the entrance to the temple and the shrine of the Virgin - it might include a few other options too. Access to the site is free.
Hi thanks for the informative video. Are the combined tickets sold online from the links you shared the same as combined tickets you would buy at the machine in placa espanya? Do you recommend buying online instead? Also when exchanging for the transit card - do you recommend doing it the day prior to avoid lines the day of? Was that what you were referring to in the video to do things ahead of time
Hi, the main issue are queues indeed. Everyone goes to Montserrat in the same time frame, early in the morning. We recommend exchanging the voucher one day prior to the trip so as to avoid the queues.
Very good information. I used the link provided here to pre-book the combined ticket, Trans Montserrat. But they didn't ask me for the to and back times for the train journeys. Would you know how can I specify the timing for the trains?
hi Tony, thanks for the video. We are looking forward to visit Spain in November. We plan to buy the Combined Ticket Tot Montserrat and experiencing the singing of the "Escolania". I learned that now we have to buy a ticket to watch the "Escolania". As far as I know the Combined Ticket Tot Montserrat does not include "Escolania". I'm wondering whether you know the official site, whereby I can buy just the ticket for "Escolania". Thanks
Thank you so much for the wonderful informative video. I am planning to go to Montserrat and stay for a couple of nights to have 2 full days of enjoying the area hiking and taking in the sights. I am not sure if I should stay in Collbato or Monistrol de Montserrat. I am looking at great air bnb options in both. Do you have any advice on this? I am leaning towards Collbato because the village looks quaint, but I understand there are more transportation options out of Monistrol de Montserrat. Also will we be ok only speaking English?
Hi Lauren, if your intention is to make the most of the hikes we would stay at the monastery area itself, and not at the foot of the mountain. All the best!
Can't wait to go there this summer. Thanks for an excellent video, you do a great job and I absolutely love your comments about stupid people ruining the art by taking selfies 😡
Thank you. I have nothing against people taking selfies and not paying attention to the places they visit, each person is the owner of their own life, but if they ruin the experience for the rest, then we have reasons to be angry! Have a great trip!
Thank you for such an informative video. For foreign travelers, Do you recommend a guided tour (most of them seem to be half day) or just go by public transportation? I am not sure if Half a day tour is adequate to apprecaite Montserrat despite having a tour guide with lots of history and guidance
Hi Subo, a guide always contributes to the value of the trip by adding lots of valuable information. But half a day for Montserrat is not the way to go, there are so many things to see and do. Go on your own. All the best.
Thank you, will be going there next week, we are from NY so used to the cold, Hopefully it is above freezing temperature on top of the mountain so we can enjoy, again grateful for your videos, may God Bless :) @@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal
This was another very helpful video, thank you. One question if I may? Does the monastery of Montserrat enjoy nice sunsets? I was thinking of staying a bit late to photograph it. Thank you!
Hi Neil, the sun sets on the opposite end of the mountain (there is a huge mountain barrier between the monastery and the sunset), so unless there's a beautiful sky to the other side of the sunset, it won't be particularly memorable. All the best.
Great video, as usual. Thanks! Can we purchase tickets that will allow us to use the cable car one way and the cog railway the other way? Which order do you recommend, and what is the link to that particular ticket, if any? Thanks again!
Hello there. Unfortunately, you cannot, you either go up and down on the cog railway or on the cable car. To combine transports you would have to buy all the tickets separately. All the best!
Hi Tony, your videos & you are awesome, highly informative & helpful. Your effort in answering questions sent your way is greatly outstanding & impressive. Please keep up your great work. A question here: I'll be visiting Montserrat Monastery & staying there overnight soon in August. It appears that the combined ticket packages are for same day travel. Is that the case? If so, does it mean that I can't use them and have to buy my tickets for different days separately?
Hello there, many thanks for your words. Unless it has changed, the combined tickets were valid for 7 days. But double-check when you exchange the voucher for the tickets. All the best!
hi Tony, many thanks for the detailed informatiom in this video, it really helps A LOT on planning our trip. After I buy the Combined ticket Trans Montserrat online, do I still have to go to the ticket counter in the train station to verify/ exchange for a real ticket? if this is the case, is there a separate counter to deal with this or the same counter that sells the ticket? I just want to make sure it isn't a long queue when I arrive, thank you.
Manny thanks to you! Yes, you buy the ticket online and exchange the voucher for the tickets at the or at the railway station (on the same counter that sells the tickets) or at any other address indicated on the website (usually the central tourist office). You can exchange the voucher before the day of your trip. All the best!
Hola Tony, thanks for all the great videos!. I'm hoping you can answer my question. If i buy the combined Trans Monserrat ticket, do i have to exchange the printed online voucher on the day of travel or can i exchange it a day or 2 in advance? thanks again!
Hi Mark, you can indeed. You can do it at any of the places you will see listed on the purchase page, including the main tourist office at Plaza de Catalunya.
Tony thank you for another wonderful video. I took notes like I was in class! Question-we must buy an extra ticket from Barcelona to Monserrat, correct? The metro passes (like the hola card) will not work anywhere other than BCN city limits?
Thank you for the great explanation. I'm planning to go to Montserrat from Barcelona on 10th February 2024. I checked the twitter (X) acocunt for both Aeri and Rack Railway. Both are closed for maintenance during that period of time. If I were to go by train, what's the best way to get up to the monastery?
Hi there, as far as we are aware, it's the funiculars that are undergoing maintenance (and probably the Aeri too) but the rack railway is working as usual. Otherwise, there would be no access to the monastery. You can confirm the closures at the ticket office at Espanya station in Barcelona.
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Thank you for your response. Yes you are right. They closed their sales for the combined tickets due to closure of both funiculars at the moment. I misread their statement. I shall purchase the tickets once they reopen the sales end of Jan
Very informative video. We are planning a trip to Montserrat next month. What time is the last COG train down from the mountain on a Sunday? Or is it posted on the timetable and easy to find?
Hi your videos are absolutely great and extremely informative. the only thing I wanted to say the combined tickets on your link do not work, would love to know if there are alternative links to buy the combo tickets.
Thank you! Every year it happens the same thing round this time of the year. The funiculars undergo maintenance and during that period, ticket sales are interrupted, to prevent you from buying a ticket you won't be able to use in full. You can still go to Montserrat but just buy a train+cog railway ticket, and book your other visits separately. See more info here th-cam.com/users/shortsyRo_m6YduSM Maintenance should last till the end of February.
Thank you for this helpful video. If I was to redeem my Tran Montserrat card from the pick-up places, am I required to use it on the same day or can I use it 3 or 4 days later?
Hi Tony.. thanks again for another excellent video. I am planning to buy the Trans Monsterrat ticket in advance, however I still need to travel to Placa Espanya on the same day to exchange the voucher. Can I pick up the tickets one day in advance? Else I will not be able to use the underground ticket from hotel to Placa espanya on the morning of my trip as I will not have the ticket before I exchange the vocher? Then I need to pay 2.5 euros for the Metro right?
Hi Tony - thanks for your very informative video! We are coming in November - If I buy the Trans Montserrat ticket, it says it already includes the admission to the Virgin shrine and the Basilica. But I know there were some changes implemented in May 2023 where you have to pay around 8 euros to see the Virgin. Is the Trans Montserrat at 45 euros already include to see the Virgin in the Basilica? Many thanks!
Hi Tony. We will be in Barcelona mid October. Do you think we can wait to purchase tickets until the week before? I would like to see how the weather will be. Thank you
Hello, thanks for the infromative video, you have a very calming effect! Q 1: almost at the end of the video, whrn you are explaining the tickets, I got confused, if I am taking the cable car and getting off at Aeri, why do I need a return ticket frin Monistrol de Montserrat, wouldn't my return ticket be BArcelona- Aeri-de Montserrat? Q2: Can we pre buy the tickets for the Basicillia and the choir? Thanks in advance
Hi Sonal: Q1 you're right, most people take the cog railway and to avoid duplicating information we just mentioned Monistrol. The price of the train ride is the same. Q2 you can and you should. Here tickets.montserratvisita.com
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Hello, Thanks so much for replying. Another follow up question, I tried the link for Bascillia /Choir tickets and it is all greyed out. does that mean that it is sold out until end of August? or do they release tickets every day?
Thank you so much. I am watching all your videos preparing for my summer trip. By the way is it cooler at Montserrat in june and july since it is mountain top?

We're going to stay overnight in Montserrat after a morning trip from Madrid.
Appreciate idea what to do in early morning and evening in Montserrat.
Thank you
Hi, there are so many tracks around the mountains that we would take the opportunity to complete a few of them.
Thank you.
I have not been there yet, but it's now on my list of places to visit next April.
👏👏👏
OMG! Loved this vid, so helpful. I had planned a foodie tour at 630pm in the gothic quarter. Maybe it’s too risky after watching this! 😍
Go to Montserrat on a different date.
Thank you! Very informative video!

Great to hear that, Barbara.
Thanks Tony, for another enjoyable video. 👍 Montserrat is in my bucket list, and I hope I get to visit soon . Your videos are really the best travel videos I’ve watched… very detailed and precise … 👍 👍 👍
Hello Jasper, hope you can make it to Montserrat on your next trip to Spain. All the best!

Great to hear you had a superb time in Montserrat!
Happy Easter!
To you too!
Thanks Tony! Your videos are very helpful. We are here in Barcelona!
Enjoy your time in Barcelona!
Delighted to hear you had a great time in Montserrat.
Very helpful. Thank you

Very nice explanation 👏

Awesome video! Thank you!

We will be driving a car from Barcelona to Montserrat. Where do we park and how to return to car after going up the mountain?
Thank you for such an informative video.
There is a paid car park near the monastery. You park your car (if there are available spaces) and walk to the monastery.
There's also a parking at Monistrol de Montserrat, one of the towns below the mountain, and it's just next to the station of the rack railway up to he monastery.
You'd have to pay the rack railway, but the parking is free as far as I know :)
@@pizzaipinya2442 yes, the car park is still there, next to the Monistrol Vila rack station, and not the initial station of the line.
Hi Danielle, no need to set a date. Have a lovely stay in Barcelona!
Thank you Tony, this made me more excited for my July Trip. From Montserrat Abbey, we also want to visit Saint Ignatius' Cave in Manresa. Barcelona-Montserrat-Manresa-Barcelona, how do we go about it via train?
I will be there in July too and I’m so excited
Hi Diana, on the way back, once you reach the main railway line at Monistrol de Montserrat, instead of taking a train to Barcelona you will take an R5 train on the opposite direction and get off at Manresa Baixador and walk 10 minutes to Cueva de San Ignacio. But somehow it feels quite a rushed outing if you want to include Montserrat and Manresa on the same day.
👍
Thanks for the information!
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal thanks so much for your help, I’ll definitely go over your guide!
I am planning a trip to Barcelona in December. I am interested in exploring Montserrat during my visit. Can you offer insights into the typical weather conditions in Montserrat during December? I would like to be prepared for any specific climate considerations. I appreciate your time and assistance in advance providing this information.
As it's no longer possible to talk of "typical" weather conditions, we advice you to check the forecast a few days before your trip.
Hi Lorraine, on the video on day trips from Barcelona we share the details on how to reach Sitges th-cam.com/video/z6XAhNXRQ-w/w-d-xo.html
Thanks
Hello, the funicular de Sant Joan is already back in operation, the funicular de la Santa Cova will do so on 1 March.
Hello, we just covered a small stretch of the initial trek going from Sant Joan to Sant Jeroni. All the best.
I need to buy a ticket online to enter Montserrat and
the whole complex.
There are no assigned train times. As you don't need a seat reservation to ride the trains, you can board any you want.
Thanks!
Our pleasure!
hi Tony, thanks for the video. Thanks
Hello, the tickets are sold here tickets.montserratvisita.com/en/ All the best!
Thanks for the video! It helps alot. Could you tell me if the cogtrains near the monastery also run in february when there are less crowds?
Hi Robin, the cog train runs all year around. But right now the funiculars at the top of the mountain are undergoing their annual maintenance.
@@subodeb3212 it will most certainly be above freezing, unless there is a cold wave over the country.

Thanks. You could try here, not the most user friendly of websites, I know: vol.cremallerademontserrat.cat/
Thank you so much, this is very helpful @@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal
Great video, as usual. Thanks!
Can we purchase tickets that will allow us to use the cable car one way and the cog railway the other way? Which order do you recommend, and what is the link to that particular ticket, if any?
Thanks again!
Hello there. Unfortunately, you cannot, you either go up and down on the cog railway or on the cable car. To combine transports you would have to buy all the tickets separately. All the best!
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Thanks, Tony and Cecilia. You're the best!
Hi Alma, yes, you need to buy your train ticket from Barcelona to Montserrat. Local transport passes are not valid.
Hi Judyann, the times depend on the date, you can check the timetable here: turistren.cat/en/trains/montserrat-rack-railway-and-funiculars/
Allen, if the rule hasn't changed, the pass is valid for up to a week, but double-check the moment you redeem the card.
Thank you
Hi Tony.. thanks again for another excellent video.
Hello, you can exchange the voucher one day in advance. You can even do so at the tourist office at Plaça de Catalunya, see the website for details.
Hi again, Yves, Trans Montserrat now includes the visit to the virgin shrine and the basilica. All the best!
Lining up tickets now. Saw something about having to take my online tickets to the office in Plaza Cataluna to exchange for hard copy tickets?
Yes, you need to exchange the voucher for the tickets. On the DETAILS tab you will see the addresses where that change can be done.
Hi Tony. We will be in Barcelona mid October. Do you think we can wait to purchase tickets until the week before? I would like to see how the weather will be. Thank you
