Who wants a mysterious box of excellent MCM goodies? Look no further than Cheryl's Box... mightycarmods.com/collections/multipacks/products/mystery-box
Cotton over-alls were a requirement I've had that you didn't mention. Just had a set of those blue workshop ones, they got me through. You did mention, but for your cousins over the ditch: Mounted fire extinguisher (reachable). Helmet (motorcycle). They checked boot for anything loose(can't do laps with your trolley jack). Checked battery was strapped. Checked exhaust volumes(no straight pipes, awww). Be prepared to drink atleast a full tank of gas, smoke a set of tyres, and chew half a clutch in a couple hours though, not cheap days. EDIT: Forgot they checked battery mount
As a CAMS scrutineer, We also check that the Battery Terminal is covered as well as the battery being secured and the wiring secured. The fire ext should have a metal strap around and securely mounted. It helps us massively if you get a sharpie and circle the Expiry date and put a big arrow to it as it can be hard to find. Helmet needs to be in good condition, we look in the lining as well as general condition inside and out and if the lining is falling apart and crumbling, its cactus. So keep it clean and don't leave it wet with sweat, it will kill the helmet. Some regs require Metal Valve caps with a proper seal, no glass headlights etc unless taped and nothing loose in the car including the glovebox / console - empty EVERYTHING out.
I've been at track days where scrutineers require the sump-plug to be wired and an obvious mechanism to close the throttle if your throttle cable breaks and the wearing of fire retardant clothing.
@@jadamsnz Sch B (g) is the throttle linkage, Wired Sump plug is a new one... haven't seen that... but I have seen people do it as well as wiring the Sump pan bolts. Clothing should be neck to ankle to wrist as a minimum.....
The trick is to get to the track, get chatting with a few people and you'll have track day friends before you know it! Every time I've gone, across three different tracks and with a half dozen different clubs or just an open day, I've found everyone super friendly, inclusive and fascinating. Unless it's a serious race, everyone is there to have fun, get out and drive and check out some cool cars and they're genuinely awesome people. Just get out there!
Can we all take a moment and acknowledge the superb sound all MCM episode have? I mean on other major channels you struggle to hear what people are saying if you are watching somewhere with noise around you. These 2 guys, freaking awesome - which of course makes sense. Just a small huge detail noone is really I think paying attention to and just takes it for granted. Marty & MOOG, kudos boys!
Did my first two track days this year and I'm itching for the snow to melt and for the weather to warm up to get out on the track again. There's so much to learn, It's addicting! Spending my long Christmas weekend catching up on all of your videos (I'm only 8 months behind; left off at Yaris Hilton). As always, thanks for the awesome content!
The laptimer on show is RaceChrono (Made in Finland, IOS and Android) and I wholeheartedly recommend this as I know the developer :) I've got a 10hz Garmin BT GPS unit to give me accurate enough positional information for it.
Ever since I started following you guys, for a few years at least, I thought that you were calling your friend “Mutton”. I was mortified today to realize you were saying “Martin” all along and I just suck at understanding accents. It was mildly mind-blowing.
Pilot Sports are the bomb. They are so much better than the Bridgestones you guys usually wear (not a bad tyre but just can't compete with the Michelin). Glad you've made the switch!
Another good thing to bing (Especially in the uk because rain) is a cheap pop up tent. Everything out of the car into a the tent will keep things dry, organised and safer from scummy eyes looking at your tools while out on track.
A good thing to know is that some track days/super sprints also don't allow regular synthetic material for clothes (unless they are treated for a race suit etc). So a long sleeve woolen/cotton (wool is better) shirt and denim jeans is a good option.
You don’t need 90% of what they have suggested. Firstly if you can’t turn a spanner it’s pointless bringing more than a very basic tool kit. You only really need a wheel brace and jack, some oil and a foot pump with tyre pressure gauge. And a cheesy helmet. That is all!
Thanks! Good and comprahensive list. Best service tip; new brake fluid every year is a cheap way to ensure brake capabillity. At the track; Before stint, check wheel bolt torque JUST after the stint, check tire pressure (and temperature)
10/10 on the kit out! But always bring multi 10mm! They seem to walk off! *also etching or scribing initals or logo's on tools* small portible grill was always a favorite with cooler dont forget RAGS... or towels they are a must and a yoga mat / shop squares
Back in the early 90s, when I was racing my Oldsmobile with small block Olds motor, I used to carry lots of spare parts. This was because it wasn't a common engine to get spare parts if I needed it while I'm up there.
Guys, so much gear. I used to take lots of tools like you, but it’s better just to be a bit more casual. Nothing wrong with only doing 200-300 miles of track time. It’s fine.
@@arthurmeiers1529 go for it! My first trackday i was driving a 1.4L Corsa C 100% stock and running on E100, and it was awesome! Its not about the car, its about having fun! Go for it! 😁
Would love to see a track day episode with the entire MCM fleet (or a large number of them) battling it out against each other and discussing pros and cons of each one .... and maybe having Marty and Moog swapping driving duties and seeing who is better/faster in each one. Would also like some update and/or "coming soon" mods/improvements for different cars in the fleet. Love the channel all the way from the beginning.
In Europe it’s mandatory to use a plastic cover (don’t know if it’s pronounced that way) under your car to prevent oil leaks on the ground when you’re parked. It’s also used to reserve your place, that way no one steals it 😅
If you're going to any Motorsport Australia (CAMS) event: Fire extinguishers must be securely bolted in and within 3 years of manufacture (date stamped around base or neck). Battery must be secured down with a proper clamp and must have an insulated cover over the positive terminal. Drones are not permitted at any event unless you jump through 20 hoops in conjunction with the event organisers.
This is very nice video / guide for beginners!! I try to invite a lot of people to try the track and they often ask about this “how to get ready? What to do? Track is scary., my car is not fast” 🤣 I think this video will help them alot!!
Pretty much covered it all there. Here in the UK there are a few variations though. There is strictly no timing allowed at a track day here. Something to do with the circuits insurance for track days. Track days are a non-competitive activity. Once you start timing it becomes a competition. (That's not to say people don't sneak a phone into their cars though!) Fire extinguishers are not mandatory and cars are generally not scrutineered at all. Although tow eyes must be fitted. Slick tyres are not allowed unless you have a roll cage also, but you didn't mention this and it may be the same everywhere. Drones are not allowed at any track here either.
Worth noting that when it comes to clothing, synthetic fibers will melt and stick to/burn the hell out of your skin if exposed to any serious heat. Cotton or will or linen should be fine but avoid polyester or other synthetics that aren't specifically made for heat resistance.
Fire extinguisher! And as said make sure it's screwed down! I know someone who set their brakes on fire when the fire extinguisher! Rolled under the handbrake leaver at some point so when he was putting the handbrake down it was actually still on a little bit
Hey guys. Also Silicone Rescue tape! Everywhere sells it, (just for you Super cheap sell it as DynaGrip SOS). I've literally fixed a cracked radiator inlet (plasitc cracked under the hose) and also a blown power steering *high pressure* line using it and been able to drive an hour home cause no one has them on the shelf for a 30yo car. That stuff is pretty magical and for like 10 bucks a roll in the car is always good
For those of us American chaps. I had an e85 tuned frs and I brought 15 gallons and burned through all of it. Had to stop when I had 5 gallons left cause Buttonwillow doesn't have e85 in site. Just an FYI. If you want to stay out all day bring closer to 20 plus as full as you can keep your car

Serious note specific to the BRZ/FRS/GT86: Get an oil cooler. Even at stock power, tracking for any period of time can quickly see temps go up to 250*+, which can lead to a bad day. Likely true for other cars as well, but it is particularly noteworthy for a twin.
When you lifted the hood and pointed at the battery I stopped the video, went outside and checked under the hood of my BRZ. Sure enough, batteries and brake boosters swap sides on right hand drive and left hand drive BRZ's!
OBD2 port reader. Ideally one that can pair with your phone. When paired with a phone most supported apps will have alarm features for if a check engine light comes up, or coolant temp runs too hot, etc. Can get them for cheap($20-30USD). Absolute must have tool to have on hand for performance testing especially endurance tests. Pretty much every car made after 1995 will have an OBD2 port.
I’ve got the Ryobi inflator, but with a mechanical gauge. The gauge is way off, so I have an accurate gauge in-line with the hose. You should check the gauge on whatever inflator you have or bring a separate high-quality pressure gauge.
Should also mention if you have adjustable arms or even just as a general thing, a full nut and bolt check is always a good thing to get used to doing. Last thing you want is to have a driveshaft bolt or control arm bolt come loose. I make sure I always but and bolt check the entire car at least 3 times, I always miss something

As someone who tracks an 86 an oil cooler is needed on these cars. I've seen an FRS blow its engine after just 2 track days without an oil cooler. Spun rods are not uncommon on tracked 86/BRZs without oil coolers.

May have found my first track car hoping to pick up this week. Found a 91 Celica for 500 us. Moving away from lifted off road stuff to street stuff so should be fun
I bought one of the Ryobi air pumps you showed - they are not really any good for cars, more... Basketballs. They do make a bigger model though - which is ACE and I have. Good info on stuff to take to track day - one thing I was surprised by - A water jug of some kind, if your car overheats, having water - and a way to put it in is uber handy even an old coolant bottle full of water. I walked up and down the pits one day as I'd lost a belt and overheated, got a new belt and not one of the people had a water jug! Ended up having to refill a 600ml water bottle many times - LAME!
What they just described is the bare minimum. The pro's that show up with those giant trailers have with them basically an entire spare vehicle, usually a few spare engines and transmissions, stacks of tires, and EVERY tool they might possibly need.
You guys should make a rallycross car at some point, that would be awesome. There is a lot of rules and regulations and modifying tips for those cars that would be cool to see and learn about. TG did it at one point, but we didnt get to see anything about how the cars were built.

So just take my whole tool shed with me lol...
Stick some wheels on it and you've got a mad mechanic's trailer!
What they just described is the bare minimum. The pro's that show up with those giant trailers have with them basically an entire spare vehicle, usually a few spare engines and transmissions, stacks of tires, and EVERY tool they might possibly need.
@ChrisHallett83 that's basically my whole tool shed...I ain't rich
Some tracks also requeted for specific coolant.. They don't want oem coolants, because they said it can causes slippery on the track when leaked
So useful! Thanks!
I'm so hyped for the track day!
Always love your content! Excellent video!
Don't forget to take a set of brake pads with you, on our Kadett GSI a set of front pads would last 2 track days.
Brought myself some merch from Perth, love your guy’s stuff and videos, Keep it up!
Ahhhh 5:30 am watching MCM..... this is the life👀.....
Also might be a good idea to bring a trailer to haul everything there...if you have a towbar that is
Ive got virtually everything on the list, except a track car. Ive even got a full race suit, gloves and shoes.
Did you guys get a new camera? Or new editing colour software? Something looks different
You guys should make a rallycross car at some point, that would be awesome. There is a lot of rules and regulations and modifying tips for those cars that would be cool to see and learn about. TG did it at one point, but we didnt get to see anything about how the cars were built.
New MCM video! Time to go drop the kids off at the pool!
