As long as the operators hesitate in closing the gates, this behaviour will continue. In North America once the gates start to close, they close. There are no remote operators, the train triggers the closure .

I was on a dart train about 22.00 on a friday night a couple of years ago heading home to Dun Laoghaire from Connolly station. This happened at the crossing shown at 1:29 , the merrion gates. The driver had to slam on the breaks. I was sitting in the seats directly behind the drivers cab. I heard him shout jesus christ prior to breaking . The hard application of the breaks threw me out of my seat into the seat infront and the back wall of the drivers cab. The driver came over the train p.a apologising for his sharpe breaking and said 3 kids , then he qualified his comment, 3 numpties ran infront of the train. When i got out of the train in Dun Laoghaire the driver was leaning out of his window looking at the cctv screen to see when to shut the train doors. I asked him was he ok but you could see he was still shocked.

If those drivers who floor the pedal cross level crossings think they can beat it every time, they should think again. I’m compiling a list of level crossing misuse videos around the world, and I came across an old news clip from Taiwan that reported on the aftermath of a level crossing accident there between a car and a train. Like some of the drivers shown in this video, the car’s driver thought he could floor through and beat the already-down level crossing, only to be hit perfectly spot-on by the oncoming train (which was travelling above 100 km/h at the time of the accident); the driver of the car died on the spot and it also injured a passenger on a station platform that was down from the level crossing, due to debris from the accident hitting her.
You can see the news clip here (in Chinese), which includes CCTV footage of the accident itself: th-cam.com/video/LV8c6PAspEs/w-d-xo.html

Thanks very much. Some of these clips feature the old style crossing barrier system which used to shake a couple of times before they dropped. It makes them look like they're reacting to vehicles going under them but they used to do that anyway. They've replaced all of those older types in the last few years.
