  • The Government of Sri Lanka established an elephant orphanage in Pinnawela in the year 1975 to care for such abandoned and orphaned elephants and their numbers have grown ever since. Today Pinnawela is home for over 80 captive elephants, and is thought to be largest captive herd in the world.
Caring and feeding such a large number of elephants is but a huge task itself. Alternatively the Government in the year 1995 created the Elephant Transit Home [ETH] in Uda Walawe [Sinhala - Eth Athuru Sevana] with the idea of caring and bringing up baby elephants found abandoned in the wild until they could be released back to the wild devoid of bringing up them in captivity.
The Elephant Transit Home in Uda Walawe is loved by many and is visited by many to see these calves being given milk as feed four times a day; at 9 am, 12 noon, 3 pm and 6 pm. It is only during these times that the general public get a chance to see them. The rest of the time they spend in the confines out of the view of people in a areas adjacent to the reservoir in the thicket.

Love that each one of them has their own personality. Some are polite, some are whiners and some are bullies. And some look too big to be drinking milk. They need their own personality to thrive when they return to the wild.

Chow Yew Wah they also use sticks and poke them! I’m so saddened! I wish Lek from ENP would come save them!
I’m so upset because they bully one another and that’s because they’re not nurtured and shown kindness!
I want to cry seeing the mahouts with sticks. Short ones long ones, all used to poke their backsides!

These elephants are supposed to go back to the wild once they reach 5. Sri Lanka has double number of elephants than Thailand despite being a much smaller country than Thailand. Unlike a couple of dozen of Lek these guys get hundreds of them every year. Take that!

An orphanage for lost elephants. They've been kept on transit until grown to live on their own in the wild.

The mahouts use sticks to poke and they smack them! There’s no compassion or affection, that’s why they’re bullying one another!
I want to cry I’m so upset!
They need to suckle, they need to be loved!
I wish I could report them to Lek at ENP!
Or cal DSWT to come and shut them down or show them the proper way!
Please God, intervene here please! They are only doing this for the money, and it’s not to care for the orphans at all!

Same feeling mam , they work for money not for the welfare of elephants.
