  • From the Icy North, Dragon headed longboats would glide towards the English shores and inside them were Viking warriors, bent on plunder and conquest. Ragnar Lothbrok a Legendary Viking King had a catalogue of successful Viking invasions over an enormous geographical area for the age. His seaborne expeditions had taken him to as north as Finland and some areas in Russia. Legends record he had ventured to Paris raided in the Hellespont and beyond. These raids had made Ragnar perhaps the most famous Viking in history. Countless stories exist in the Sagas of Ragnar’s exploits, avenging his grandfather, slaying Kings and mythological creatures to personally duelling warrior-champions along-side his many sons were just some of the tales surrounding this legendary figure.
    Although Ragnar was a larger than life man and warrior King, he met his fate as many fighters do. Ragnar would underestimate King Aella of Northumbria, he attacked the English King but his Viking fleet was captured and he was executed by being thrown into a snake pit and was eaten alive. His end was described in the Gesta Denorum, “Thus a most glorious conqueror died a prisoner, a lesson that no man should put too much trust in fortune.”
    This one action would have a long lasting consequence on the lands of Britain for centuries as the death of a King would have a domino effect on the Kings of the divided land of England. Ragnar’s sons were coming to avenge him; Vidarr the Norse God of Vengeance had demanded revenge and the sons of Ragnar had heard him. The Ragnassons were all capable men who had fought alongside their father would gather all of their soldiers and bring them together; they would bring a force to England that had not been seen since the time of the Romans over 800 years before, The Great Heathen army would change England forever and 400 long ships would glide across the North Sea with their destination being the Kingdom of Northumbria. This is a tale of honour, revenge and the thirst for blood; this is the story of the Great Heathen army.

    It takes a strong, magnificent man and his strong, magnificent family, and their courage to explore the unexplored, be honourable and truthful and be faithful, to unite a people. Unfortunately for the brittanians, ragnar was such a man, and martyring him with such a torturous, long death sealed their defeat.

      Indeed if it wasn’t for Alfred, the whole of England would have fallen! And the remaining sons of Ragnar and guthrum would have split the kingdoms!

    • @runningwildttv3648
      @runningwildttv3648 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I still believe if Ivar fought Alfred the outcome would have been different. I do think that it made England a better country and a force in the future because of these wars. Remember, it's almost always easier to defend a land when it's your home than to invade and conquer. The only reason 1066 went to the Norman's which ironically where mostly of Viking blood is because the Norwegians softened them up.

    Awesome. I still have doubts Ivar and Imar were the same person. I do believe Ivar died earlier and was buried at Repton, this prompting the split between Halfdan and Guthrum. Besides, if you look at Imar's family tree, the bothers have other names and he isn’t Ragnar's son… provided Ragnar existed in the first place, which is still rather unlikely, at least not as we know him.

Some are completely made up ...95% of the real characters only did 10% of what is shown on TV. A lot of things that did happen in the shows, happened to different characters at different times. Ragnar had like 11 sons or something crazy like that. He was the son of a King, Bjorn was actually 2nd or more son of Aslug , Rollo wasn't even alive in the same century and no relation, etc.

      Id very possible it was 4000, remember unlike hollywood the End of empires ment the fall of giant armys.. (to costly) so most small kingdoms probably only had litterly 100-500 soldiers at max and usually they were "call up" men and not "standing men" so 4000 would be a massive army for the early middle ages.

      From what I've researched, if someone had been killed in an unjust or cowardly way, the next of kin are allowed to seek vengeance upon the interloper and only then will the person in question (Ragnar) be allowed into Valhalla.

      I honestly have no idea, I can speculate that the vikings may have had better weapons due to the advancement in forging, smelting and smithing but when it comes to battle it really depends on the leaders and what formation/ tactic there going to decide on.
      Due to the fact that vikings would have had steel/iron swords and axes and berserkers and ulfhednar I would go for them. However it’s all speculation!

      They would have got in "nice terms" gaped... and thats being nice..
      Rome was a very well trained standing army, + they had the numbers 4000 was childs play for the romans they could call up (depending what time periods) easy 15- 25k troops. So it would have been in nice term a massicer.
      Remember
      unlike hollywood the End of empires ment the fall of giant armys.. (to costly) so most small kingdoms probably only had litterly 100-500 soldiers at max and usually they were "call up" men and not "standing men" so 4000 would be a massive army for the early middle ages.

    This is very good..However we are pretty sure that whomever Ragnar was, he most definitely wasn't killed in a snake pit. I know your just retelling certain sources,, but I feel you should offer input when repeating something that is clearly myth..I say this because it's getting disturbing how much love viking history is getting., Peaople are seeing vikings as Heroes. They are confusing vikings with the Norse..Most Norseman were not Vikings...As you know Viking litterally translates as "Plunderer".. They were not honourable...They sacrificed children, enslaved whole villages, and committed genocide in Ireland...If they had taken Wessex they would have probably gone onto wipe out the Anglo saxon culture.. Norseman were the people of Scandinavia, Vikings were people of Scandinavia who were also rapists and plunderers.. Again, I love your channel,, just offering some constructive criticism. I have watched the last kingdom, and vikings..Both these shows glorified the Vikings whilst completely changing Saxon history..How they portrayed Athelstan and Edward is an abomination to our history.. so it's people like you that can keep our real history alive..

    • @historyprofiles
      @historyprofiles  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mark thank you for your comment, when adding the disclaimer about Ragnar in the snake pit, I agree with you however I feel it it would ruin the flow of the storytelling in the video as the aim is for people to be immersed by the chapters. I have all the sources in the description and even say according to the gesta danorum etc
      Much in the gesta danorum is myth and a lot is real history so the lines are blurred with that particular source.
      When it comes to vikings as heroes, very few were I agree with you. Dublin was the capital of the slave trade in Europe during the Viking age as they sold whole tribes into slavery etc -
      I agree that if they took Wessex they would have wiped out the Anglo Saxon culture, however the angles and Saxons did exactly the same thing to the Britons and pushed them to living in Wales
      A savage world bred savage men and the easiest way to be remembered back then was being a warrior which goes hand in hand with being evil
      Although I try and tell this history in an interesting way it’s not my intention to glorify it, anyway I hope you enjoyed the video! And I appreciate your comment
