Whenever you’re buying yarn to crochet, on the little wrapper that’s holding the yarn together tells you what size hook you need for that specific yarn!!

also I don’t know if somebody already answered for crochet but you can take multiple brands, the quality might change depending on brands, some are easier to crochet than other (like the cheapest one are sometimes hard to crochet) the most important thing is that for one project you always have the same size (3-4mm are the most common ones I bet) you can also double crochet so pour two balls of yarn and crochet them together
