16,000 Antlers and Counting…

  • Nothing gets Jim Phillips going like antlers-lots and lots of antlers. But this collector is no killer. For the past 59 years, he’s been scouring the hills of southwestern Montana in pursuit of local elk, deer and antelope antlers that the animals shed each season. In that time, the self-proclaimed "Antlerman" has amassed over 16,000 specimens and built a shrine attached to his home to show off his impressive collection. For Phillips, the hunt for new antlers is a joy renewed with each hike through the hills and every discovery along the way.

      BurtDude Actually it's bad for the forest, thats why parkrangers regularly collect antlers to cut them into pieces so people don't collect them. They contain minerals and so on which is consumed by small animals and returns to the soil. Taking them out can have long term consequences for the forest. So yeah, there are reasons against doing it...

    • @Maxwaehrens
      @Maxwaehrens 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      SnowmansApartment it's much worse to cut down large part of the forests in the world simply to supply human with wood, but we don't try to reason against doing so all day do we?

    • @SnowmansApartment
      @SnowmansApartment 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maxwaehrens i was just stating the fact that there are in fact reasons against doing it, as many assume there aren't. I'm sure many People are happy to have more informations about a matter to make ups their mind. And yes, there are many people fighting against deforestation,but i'm sure you know that already.

      Don't be so pessimistic, you know what I mean by this channel gaining popularity. Great Big Story has awesome videos and so far even with over 1 million people it seems like a majority is a mature audience. I'm sure there's millions of more people who are just as mature and appreciative of this kind of work presented by the channel. Also, it doesn't matter since majority of individuals on TH-cam are immature children to begin with..

    I thought taking the antlers wasn't a good thing, though?
    they're full of minerals, and they contribute to the ecosystem
    I've heard of forest guards taking the antlers and cutting them up before putting them back in nature so that they wouldn't get taken away by people

      @99keltin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Gunboats I mean if you are going to be that anal, you can literally say even poop can be full of benefits, and that it can contribute back to the ecosystem. Not sure why you even mention it lol. Nature breaks every thing down in a cyclical. What will you say next? , we should bury the death in the ground rather than in a coffin because the decaying body can contribute back to the ecosystem? Somethings in life, let people do their thing, there are far greater battles to be won lol

      But this is not negative, it's actually a valid point. Antlers are a source of phosphorus, calcium and other minerals and little creatures like squirrels, rabbits and porcupines often chew on them. Taking shed antlers is an offense in some countries too.

    God bless you.I just finished reading the Reporter and dropped the magazine when it had your website on the last line.I'm a Boilermaker in the 146 in Alberta Canada. but I live on the Atlantic Ocean in NewBrunswick. I had a little collection started but I went out to work for 3 years straight and the porcupines chewed and ruined them.I got a unique 4 point whitetail with 7 and 8 inch g2's but one of its brow tines is 15.5 inches long and the other is 21" dead on. I too didn't kill it. it was hit by a car.I am going to find out if I can legally mail it to you, and if I can,it would be my honor to pay the shipping cost to a fellow brother. I made the cover of Sports Illustrated when they used to cover hunting and fishing.I was 8 years old it was the September 8th 1958 issue.it was 25 cents and was a weekly magazine.I looked and read the2012 field and stream. it's an understatement when they say some way up to 100lbs.a big mature 5 or 6 foot rack on skull European style a friend found ,has to weigh 150.we broke the neck bone and the 2 of us carried it app 2 miles.felt like 300pounds.it was non typical with 38 points.some say44? I'm going to see our Department of Natural Resources and see if their is a absolute legal way to send you that.I don't want to risk anything for u.but Jim I live on a border Provence, so I will get back to you.
