I'm sure plenty of people are trying to figure out what this music video means, or just want to know why it's so messed up and dark. Well, I was humming along the lyrics in my head and watching the video and I think I have it figured out. Of course, I could be completely wrong, but I think the interpretations of this being about his ex-wife make no sense and what's left to explain the video? Seriously, if anyone has any suggestions - backed up or not - let me know. Well here it goes: So I remember reading somewhere that Jack White said he asked his daughter what she wanted to eat and she said, "sixteen saltines". There's the title right there. I think this is key to the entire song, his daughter. Maybe the "sixteen" triggered a thought of her growing up to that age, but for whatever reason it's about the fear of her growing up and her going through that phase and possibly drifting apart, but he'd still care and love her. *She's got stickers on her locker, and the boy's number's there in magic marker*. She's attracted to boys, and his number is in "magic marker", secret. He can't control what happens in school. *Well every morning I deliver the news, black hat, white shoes and I'm red all over*. Sounds like he's describing himself. *She's got a pink mailbox that she puts up front, garbage in, garbage out, she's getting what she wants*. Promiscuous sex. *If I get busy then I couldn't care less what you do, but when I'm by myself, I think of nothing else than if a boy just might be getting through and touching you*. He likes to think that he's more progressive and less hypocritical than previous generations of parents and knows that they'll have sex regardless, and it's probably best if he doesn't drive her away from himself and into a guy's arms. *Spike heels make a hole in a lifeboat, drifting away when I'm talking and laughing as we float*. A (mostly teenage girl) shoe is destroying a "lifeboat", a failed attempt at preserving her innocence. They're drifting further apart and he can't really do anything but talk about it and try and laugh it off, but teenagers will rebel, even against "cool dads". *I hear her whistle, that's how I know she's home. Lipstick, eyelash, broke mirror, broken home*. He only knows she's there indirectly, like they're out of touch. Now she dresses up like a woman (or what she thinks one is), and there's a broke mirror which is almost always used to symbolized a split personality, especially in old movies that Jack likes so much. Typical hormonal teenager stuff. But maybe she's like this because of the broken home he raised her in. *She doesn't know, but when she's gone I drink her perfume. I'm sure she's drinkin' too, but why, where and what and for who?* He goes through her stuff to try and understand her. Why does she have to go out and drink for no reason? Now finally for the video - a bunch of scary kids doing horrible things: smashing things, drinking Robitussin to get high (is there something stupid kids _can't_ get high on?), tumultuous relationship with the "milkshake" couple, suicidal behavior, tattoos, premature death, and violence. Meanwhile, Jack is powerless to do anything. Truly a father's worst nightmare.
FUCK JACK WHITE IS A LYRICAL GENIUS!!!!!!! "She doesn't know but when I'm alone I sit around and drink her perfume. But I'm sure she's drinkin' too but why where what for and who? and solo rowing on one side of the boat."
This song is EVERYTHING!! I blast this in the am to get going!! And, I live in a Senior Community😂😂😂😂😂 Been a fan for EVER!!! Jack White RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Who's jealous, who's jealous, who's jealous of who?" Is a valid question that examines the relationships between people and a motivating factor in how we treat one another.
Damn, I hate to think of the sick atrocities that Jack White would have committed if he didn't have music to use as an outlet for his insanity. Oh the horrors!!!!
I forgot about this video but the little boy was praying at the beginning and who eats the apple in the casket is my little brother, he’s almost 16 now wow😂😂
Rank Savage what the fuck does that have to do with anything? So if the song had been written about San Francisco, they would be from California? I'm sorry, it just seems like you put little to no thought into the question or your answer. Christy

this music video is giving major eric Draven crow vibes and i love it great movie by the way wouldn't surprise me if he took inspiration from that movie. 2:46
The symbolism in huge in this video. Disturbing at times because it it involves children mainly but think of where the media is targeted and how the youth perceive this. The 'angels' on bicycles is a huge metaphor.
Jack White is always recognized for his musical genius, and rightly so… But: “she doesn’t know that when she’s gone, I sit and drink her perfume….” Always gets me. He really doesn’t get enough credit for his lyrics, IMO
Brilliant. The shot of the peanut butter on bread being tossed on the ceiling, gave me a needed chuckle. At a point in my 37 yrs., where I'm sick and tired of the crap on the radio that's called "music", I have found an original, creative guy who gets it 100%. A mad genius, perhaps. But those are the best kind.
When I graduated my (extremely religious) mom asked me what my favorite song was so she could turn it on while we were celebrating. Of course I chose this song and mom.. well she nearly died of a heart attack. Her eyes were glued to the screen while I screamed in the background "Relax mom! It's just art to me!"
0:18 this is jack white when he first came into existence as a feral blue child before he was domesticated enough to wear clothes and channel his wild instincts into a guitar
Probs my favorite promotional music video in the last decade even if it looks like harmony korines day nap dream before he feeds his dog and smokes a stogie while casually drifting on a board.
🤔Thanks Jack! Good to hear somebody put a little balls in energy into a rock song! Need a little more of that lead guitar unleashed. Better yet Don't change a thing keep us hungry... Perfect!!!! 🤪
I don't get how people don't see the point of this video. It screams America and its youth. I watched this and felt like I was reliving my teenage years and late childhood. Broken down buildings everywhere, houses falling apart, drugs, suicide. It involved many races too, and their struggles. The African-American child walking into the nice house and seeing himself in the coffin...Does this not click for anyone, really? Are so many of you blind or unaware of what it's like to grow up here when you don't live in the damn suburbs? THERE IS SO MUCH SYMBOLISM IN THIS VIDEO IT IS RIDICULOUS.
I'm from the same areas in which this is filmed. I'm a few years younger than Jack and am one of the ones that saw a zombied out graveyard of murders and drugs in every corner and was disgusted by it. Most people revel in it. I hated everyone around me.
I guess only Americans can relate in a way. I understood the message, though. It just wasn't how I grew up. And I spent most of my childhood in the suburbs, but we had no money. Suburbs doesn't mean shit. Only had the house cause my grandmother died and left it to my mother, but my dad was jobless, mom worked as a waitress insane hours not getting much, thrift shop clothes were all we could afford, and shit food too. The coffin part was probably the best part; how he's lying down in it eating an apple kind of made me think like in this life, it won't be his reality. But if he's dead, in another life it could be etc
This does not scream America and it's youth... I'm American and my younger years were nothing like that, and I'm pretty sure I didn't grow up in a suburb so I didn't live some privileged childhood, I came from a working class family, maybe this was a reality for some American youth but not all...
I've been a huge Jack White fan since I heard my first White Stripes song in the mid 90's. He's a multi-talented musical renaissance man. Alt/Punk/Rock/Folk, his music defies description. And his songs on the Cold Mountain soundtrack is some of the most hauntingly beautiful music I've ever heard. I'm not one to stop liking an artist just because he's become 'popular'. So there.
simply as good as best White Stripes songs, even better perhaps - fantastic video and song - i saw White Stripes live in 2004 at the peak of popularity, it was a fantastic concert you have no idea
I agree. At first I thought maybe it was directed by Harmony Korine. He should at least get a credit of Inspired by or dedicated to. Because this is just a total rip off of Gummo and Korines work. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But this is just blatant theft of ideas and probably a copyright infringement of intellectual material. I mean if John Fogerty can get sued for plagiarizing himself this video could defiantly earn Harmony Korine a nice settlement check.
how what works? If your going to accuse me of not knowing how "this" works. You have to at least define what "this" is. The only thing that is clear is your lack of mastering the English language or for that fact the simple means of communicating a thought.
Old fashioned rock is coming back strong. Rock/metal are progressing back to the top, which they should be. They have so much diversity in sound, complex song arrangements, and just full on talent. I like VERY LITTLE rap, because most have no talent and it is boring. Eminem is good, he has talent. Juicy J, 2 Chainz, Ludacris, and the worst rapper in history, Future, have 0 talent. Pop is immensly generic. I think only 2 modern day pop artists that have talent are Adele and Ceilo. MJ and The Beatles had major talent in the day. Country is the most generic though. 95% talk about beer, trucks/tractors breaking down, divorce, dog dying, and loses your home. It is boring. And 99% just have simple and boring quitar chords use that will put you to sleep. And fuck Taylor Swift, just had to add that in. In a nutshell, rock/metal in a couple years will be back near the top of music, thanks to Avenged Sevenfold, Jack White, The Arctic Monkeys, Lorde, Godsmack, Volbeat, Seether, Queens of the Stoneage, The Black Keys, Slipknot, Killswitch Engage, Imagine Dragons, Five Finger Death Punch, Theory of a Deadman, Coldplay, Linkin Park, Rise Against, and more. I am sorry if I missed some modern rock/metal bands but I am only counting ones that are great mainstream, and also stay decently close to rock. Lorde barely counts. I kind of count KONGOS too. But no fun., Spoon, or other stuff that can be described as puss rock. I would like to hear opinions.
We’ve started a music movement where we feature underground artists to help get them noticed. All great revolutions start small, so join the movement and tell your friends, and who knows maybe you'll be able to get your music featured!
William Brendon Equally unnoticed? What are you afraid of? Underground is where they come from right? Or, is it some tv networth major money making lets make a star propaganda show? Are you even aware of where music/bands come from? Or do you just by the cd? There is room for all music.
melissa morrow To come to that conclusion about what I think about music you'd have had to have either completely missed the point of my comment or be completely deluded. If it's the latter, just wait a couple years and re-read your comment to figure out what's wrong with it. Cheers
Sam Baugh but when they came to poland in 2006 i heard him speaking polish and my jaw dropped when started to speak in elaborate complex sentences in fluent polish. i know that everybody in america are the children of emigrants but they have been there for generatiions, or are of mixed generations. he was born in a polish home where his parents were both polish and were new arrivals to america.
My brother recently got rock smith and I was stoked when saw they had this song on the game, been a long time fan of white stripes and jack on his own.

Since when was Lorde rock/metal??????
This has to be one of the most vicious songs anyone has ever written about their ex.
this song has such a "Lolita" vibe to it, it's like what H. Humbert would sing to her Lo if he was into rock music
TEMAZOOOOOO🇻🇪🔥🔥. Hace 10 años que no la escuchaba
1:47 refounds exists woman
Gorgeous.
The windows open jack, just crawl out
Was this video directed by Harmony Korine or something?
yeah somehow reminded me a bit of gummo too
We’ve started a music movement where we feature underground artists to help get them noticed. All great revolutions start small, so join the movement and tell your friends, and who knows maybe you'll be able to get your music featured!
I feel like instead you'll make everybody equally unnoticed. But hey, maybe you'll make a buck
Awesome post!
Cheers
William Brendon hhj
I love the beginning of this video.. because its like 'How did you even get into this situation?!???? '
Jack White is POLISH !!!
And God bless him
*****
He's of Polish origin. As in his family. No one is just 'American'.
***** cheers :)

In that case, I'm a French Nord... Cool
Jack White all tied up... Hmmm...
This video just fucked with my brain. I love it 😍

William Alexander dude same 😂👌
My brother recently got rock smith and I was stoked when saw they had this song on the game, been a long time fan of white stripes and jack on his own.
His music is original, kinda funky like Beck.
This dude's videos freak me out more than Marilyn Manson's...
Same
Yeah, it's how I see America....
Glad to see Jack White hasn't gotten any less weird over time.
What a badass.
