Brandon Routh deserved more time in the cape. Especially with the taste we got in Crisis On Infinite Earths. He'd found nuance and an evolution to the character in his latter portrayal. Like Henry Cavill, just when he was finding his way the rug was taken from under him

Yeah, they cast perfect people for the role, and then do them dirty. First the farce that was Superman 4 for Reeve, then only giving Routh one movie, and then writing Cavill too emo and without hope, and then dumping him.

Reminds of the Superman curse where every actor that portrayed Superman gets unlucky or worse.

Brandon Routh playing a mix of Clark Kent from *Superman Returns* with a splash of *Kingdom Come* was one of my favorite moments of *Crisis on Infinite Earths* ...
The crossover itself was a disappointment scenario wise, but hey, look at all those cool cameos! Just those were worth it IMHO ^^
(but story wise, the one before it, *Elseworlds* , was a much better crossover IMO, and *Crisis on Earth-X* was also better in my mind... I don't remember *Invasion!* that good, though....)
... but seriously, the Anti-Monitor has such a nice and unique design, and instead of trying to make something resembling this usual design, they went with *DragonBall Evolution* 's Piccolo but even shittier looking, and without the voice of James Marsters as a unique saving grace.

@@3RayfireI don’t think that it’s the concept or writing that’s the problem. The problem is that WB is so reactionary that they would intervene and ruin everything because of how we handle the change or take of the characters regardless of the fact that they are accurate to the sources

The part that punched me in the gut when I first watched this movie in the theater was when Superman falls from space and crashes into Metropolis Central Park. They rush him to the hospital, but can't fix him. Meanwhile this huge crowd forms outside and Ma Kent is in the crowd, crying because her boy is dying, but she can't go see him. And even if she could, she couldn't, because that would expose who he was, reveal too much to the world, so she just stays in the throng and weeps, unable to do anything other than be surrounded by other people who are also afraid, but a world apart from them just the same.

I feel it should be remembered more for being so low in action. Every Superman film has had an action set piece, but this one lacking it helps cement the idea that Superman isn't just some guy who beats up "Super Powerful Villains".

    • @mdecast
      @mdecast ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@electricfeverx976 maybe but this was the first superman movie in decades. the fact that superman didnt throw a single punch is really lame, especially considering how bad the action was in the original superman movies. here i feel like with the budget and vfx team they had, the fact that there wasnt even one fight in the whole movie and superman just catches stuff gets really boring after you see it for the thousandth time. in terms of spectacle it brought nothing new to the table and was just stuff youve already seen reeves do. albiet with way better effects, but those effects are more just a reminder on what couldve been if they just put that vfx money elsewhere

@@mdecast that's why I think this film came too early that it should. This film obviously wants to evoke a nostalgic feeling of simple times, and this aproach could have worked if it was made today. Nowdays that superhero movies are established in cinema, this feeling of nostalgia of a time without crossovers and without the cgi battles of today could have been amazing.

    • @lithium98
      @lithium98 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The biggest issue with superman is the limit of his power. He's either infinitely strong, which is boring, or he's not, which makes people mad.
I think the idea of superman not throwing a single punch for a whole movie while still resolving the story's conflict is interesting. It doesn't make for a great movie alone, but if you can have superman resolve a conflict without violence, then you've got a solid superman story. That's his ultimate goal as a protector.
I think what they tried to do with this movie is substitute the violence with feats of strength. The idea of superman solving his problems with his fists is boring. In a lot of media, superman's first reaction is to hit something because he can. That's a little old and tired. I think they tried to stay away from that, but a little too much.
      Tldr
Superman has to hit stuff, but not too much or too little. Not because it's cool, but to remind us why he's so super

When this movie came out, I was 24 and in. "I want to see Superman punch things mode. My generation also grew with the Superman Doomsday fight, which is what we all wanted to see. But now, being older and wanting my Superman on screen again, I have to go back and watch this. Maybe maybe just maybe this was the Superman we wanted all along. Well, not really but I feel this immense urge to just bid farewell to the person who I feel does not need me anymore and to just leave them be cause of me feeling unworthy and a pain in the arse, so seeing how even the God that Superman is, he still faces things like these while being more or less so careful, it really pains me. Knowing that I might never be like him hurts and the goal of trying to be gives me hope at the same time, not much but still it does. Superman Returns is unironically the best Superman film ever released to theaters. Unless one of the cartoon movies had a limited run in like two theaters or something that I'm unaware of, nothing else even comes close. The _closest_ is probably the first one, only because it's the least bad (besides this one), but it still does impossibly stupid things like Lois' poem, or the spinning the Earth backwards.

Superman Returns always had this weird position where it was both incredibly formative in developing my love for the character-it came out around the same time I first saw the Christopher Reeve movie and I collected a ton of the merch from it-but also weird in that I never actually saw it in full until years later. Putting aside Singer and Spacey's involvement, it's just okay. Not _bad,_ but I think it really didn't do enough with the premise of "Superman has been gone for five years and now has to adjust to how things have changed in his absence", or at least not beyond the personal stuff with Lois.
And I always liked Routh as Superman. To me he was always the next best pick after Reeve until Hoechlin came along, and I'm so glad that he got another, better chance to shine in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, even with his limited screentime. Really showed how much better he got at acting and fitting the role with time.

First, THANK YOU! I've always liked this movie and never understood why so many dumped on it. Brandan Routh was fantastically cast, the way he portrays the bumbling idiot Clark and then transforms into the ever optimistic Superman is entirely underrated.
Secondly, it only hit me as I'm watching this video that Batman and Superman are two opposites of the same coin. One is physically invulnerable while being emotionally vulnerable, and the other is physically (hypothetically) vulnerable while being emotionally invulnerable. I feel Superman Returns is a wonderful look at what an emotionally vulnerable Superman looks like WITHOUT it needing to be "Superman goes evil". It bugs me when people call Superman "boring because he's invulnerable", and I'm just like but he's not. He's just not vulnerable in the traditional ways that comics are accustomed to, and I think Superman has a way of exposing the writers who lack that imagination to do anything interesting with him.

Kevin spaceys version was just Gene Hackmans version again. I liked Branden Routhe as Superman but the movie could've been better as a sequel to Christopher Reeves Superman.

Directed by Alan Smithee and starring Nicolas Cage as Lex Luthor.
    Is how I remember it.

I liked 2006 Superman Returns, better than the Snyderverse, this was a slow rolling start for a connected universe. Unfortunately Nolan/Bale made a Batman trilogy that was not going to work with others. Now we're stuck at another crossroads! DC had successful films making profit, but not MCU excitement and ticket sales, jealousy!
Small tweek could have gotten Tom welling into the opening scenes of Superman Returns. Clark & Jonathan talking about 6
Even the MCU is about to struggle, any box-office success from phase 4, was from nostalgic fans, who left disappointed. The majority of fans don't want to watch every special on Disney+ just to understand the plot before the movie starts, that's homework nobody wants?
Then DC gave Zach Snyder too much money, who immediately wasted the top 6 DC storylines
Any future movie that uses death of Superman, Darkseid, Batman fighting Superman, doomsday, Motherboxes, Superman resurrection. They'll all be better films, and get Any future movie that uses death of Superman, Darkseid, Batman fighting Superman, doomsday, Motherboxes, Superman resurrection. They will all likely be better films, while getting criticism for recycling stories from Snyder; "they should have kept the Snyderverse!" Then DC characters become public domain in 10 years 🫤

The only DC movie I ever cared about, other than the first two Batman movies and Watchmen. Routh was the perfect Reeve replacement, no contest.

I saw this film 5x in the theater...I liked it but there was so much complaining it being boring and the nostalgia...I do have a question though....you referenced Clark's revenge in MOS...How do you feel about his act of revenge in both versions of Superman 2?

To be honest, I'm glad they never made a sequel to this. The synopses I've read all involve Jason rapid-aging and then dying so as to reset the damn stupid useless status quo. Sigh.

Yeah and that the villain would be Brainiac and the last laugh would belong to him also having a child out of wedlock is against what Superman stands for.

Good movie, could have been a lot better. Man of Steel was an ok movie, and I don't think they could have improved it much. Needed to scrap the whole thing and start over.

The problem with this movie is how boring it is. They had Kevin Effing Space as Lex, and they managed to make even him a forgetable one note villan.

Saw the film twice and have no memory of it. Woulda sworn the kid using a piano to kill someone was in the Amy Adams version. Zero memory of Spacey or Bosworth. Feel like I did the 00s right by ignoring stuff like this.
