Thanks for posting this! I'm so nervous to transition from med surg to icu. I feel like I'm not smart enough. But thanks for the tips, definitely going to study.

I totally relate to this! I just started working in the ICU a month ago from a PCU and it was such a huge change. Definitely overwhelming. I feel like a new grad all over again like you said! But thank you so much for sharing this. It is comforting to know I am not the only one who feels overwhelmed starting in ICU! Thanks!

How long was your orientation? I just started in ICU as well and we get 3 months. I was surprised b/c its the ICU you know? Thought at the very least 6 months. There is SO MUCH to learn. Its a lot!

Brittany Guzman hey I just want to say good luck and don't give up when it gets hard! I had my son at 18. Took the first year after high school off and started at my local community college when I was 19. I got my associates this last December and got hired directly into the ICU. I plan on getting my bachelors later, probably starting on it next year.

Hey Ashely, do you know of any nurses that have made the transition from OR to ICU? I know the skills of an OR nurse wouldn't transfer as well to the ICU setting when compared to PCU nurses. That being said, I'm interested in starting in perioperative nursing if I get the opportunity; however, I don't want to limit my opportunities to make it into the ICU down the road if that's the path I decide to travel.

It’s funny how med-surg nurses have been exposed to a lot of this after going through a pandemic. After having caring for many patients on high oxygen demands like high flow NC, 100% BiPAP, cardizem, amio, heparin drips. RSI
