I bought one of his singles. "Hang on in There Baby" on MGM. I think he did an outstanding job producing "Someday We'll Be Together" for The Supremes, a Motown classic. It is possible his career did not take off because there were too many similarities in the style to Barry White. You can hear the similarity in some of the singles sampled in this video. Sounds like he had quite a career as a producer anyway.

JB deserves full recognition. Thank you. I am happy to see our culture delivering our historic information so tactfully. You are taking me back.
The song was"We've come to far to end it now." by Smokey and the Mircles. Love this song. I remember Johnny Bristol but only Hang on in there baby. I was a kid...
I worked with Johnny Bristol on a song called it’s too late produced by Patrick Adams. And written by Lamar, Thomas and Judy Taylor, I did the background work at PowerPlay studios in New York Johnny Bristol great voice, great talent. He also wrote the song. Someday we’ll be together recorded by The Supremes great voice, great talent
Thanks A Million Sir, for Featuring the Stellar Musically Talented Genuis, Mr. Johnny Bristol!❤👏🏼👸 He was SOOO Immensely Talented; and very much Unsung, in The Music Industry. I'm 62 years old and retired Over the Road Truck Driver. There wasn't no internet, satellite TV and cable TV was limited to certain areas. It was just radio stations and the signal was weak, unless you got near the city and town. Theses small town play a lot of Motown music at night. I brought a lot cheap soul music in these small towns. The music was on cassette tapes. It made it easy to travel over the road. Theses artists have no idea how they change the world and touch everyone hearts 💕. They just don't make great music like that anymore. I brought a lot of Albums, 8-Track tapes and cassette tapes. These artists was a genius. Generations wealth and music is the only thing you should pass on to your children and grandchildren ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
Sad he doesn’t get the love he deserves!! My uncle as well Melvin Ragin aka Wah Wah Watson who also was a Motown rhythm guitarist. He played on Lets Get It On and Papa Was A Rolling Stone and countless hits with one guitar given to him by Ray Parker Jr. RIP unc!!!!!!
Didn't Ashford & Simpson write some of the songs you mention for Tammy Terrell & Marvin Gaye? I loved his song Hang on in there baby, he had a very unique and different voice which I liked.
My Grandma and my Mom grew up in Detroit and my Grandma really liked Johnny Bristol and other Motown artists you mentioned on this vid such as Jr. Walker & the All Stars, The Temptations (David Ruffin) and Gladys Knight and the Pips among others. I grew up listening to this music as my Grandma babysat us after school and during the summers while my Mom worked and played Motown artists all day on her record player that she still had. Hang On There Baby is a great song.
Thank you for this! I was "introduced" to Johnny Bristol as the composer and male accompanying voice on the Supremes "Someday We'll Be Together". I did not know the Velvelettes originated "These Things Will Keep Me Loving You". I was only familiar with Diana Ross' version. I scrolled through some of your content and said to myself, I need this in my life. Lol. Subscribed.
I'm born and raised in detroit and know of many of Motown acts, I think I heard of his name but never knew anything about him. Thanks for giving him his flowers I'm sure his family would be proud if they were to see this.
Thank you for taking time to share this information. I was happy to see you mention Tavares who also recorded Positive Forces by Johnny Bristol. I would love to see a video about them on your channel. This effort takes a lot of work and research. I appreciate your efforts.
you held it down with this article. im a big bristol fan, but sadly i never knew about his gift of song writing of great great hits. thanx for taking me back to such wonderful memories. i'm subscribing to your channel.
You keep these Artists Names Alive. I can't understand this Talented Songwriter and Singer, Written the Last Song for Diana Ross with the Supremes, Someday, We be Together, And Jr Walker and the All-stars Gotta hold to that feeling. He also written Songs for Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, My Favorite Ain't no mountain high enough. And David Ruffin, My Whole world ended. So Talented, Mr. Johnny Bristol should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. RIP Always ❤️❤️🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏❤️💙🙏🙏❤️
I really liked his music. I bought his " 13:18 Hang on in There" album when it was released. I still enjoy it. I never understood how his vocal talents weren't recognized. He had a great, distinctive voice. His tune "Do it to My Mind" still sounds so contemporary!
I'm just going to assume that Berry Gordy didn't want him to shine as much as he was trying to shine he had a nice voice I just don't seem to remember him some songs he sounds like Berry white I don't know why I don't remember him thanks for playing the music as well as showing us the music I love that great touch thanks 👍🏽 again
Profiles in Pittsburgh Allegheny County PA would you like to say thank you for being one of the top men of music that entered the Air Force you gave to our country and it took a long time for us to realize who you are England has a part that's called Bristol County play truly loved him over there was Chuck Jackson and Tommy hunt it made TH-cam video these three great men Nora Parker family from Black Mountain North Carolina our family came to Pittsburgh in 1901 build a Presbyterian Church 1927 music was our greatest love thanks again for this memory of this great writer I will be glad to sign the petition I'm thankful he's in the North Carolina Hall of Fame hallelujah amen❤
Greetings brother love your show and I agree with you 💯 about getting all of these heroes into the hall of fame because so many artists with less accomplishments than them are in there please let know what I can do.
I am a music lover, but I don't think I ever heard of Johnny Bristol. I love the songs he wrote. What a shame he wasn't mentioned in a lot to the Motown documentaries.
Johnny Bristol never quite achieved his potential as a solo artist. I remember Hang On In There Baby when it was released back in 1974, here in the UK it was a MASSIVE hit reaching No3 on the UK Pop Singles chart. At the same time the Osmonds were at No1 with Love Me For A Reason and Tom Jones had just released his version of Memories Don't Leave Like People Do. It looked as if the devastatingly handsome former Motown staff writer was about to become a soul superstar. But that never happened. Johnny failed to follow up his initial success and the momentum quickly ground to a halt. Despite releasing quality material it just failed to click with the public beyond his core soul base. The man had the looks, the talent and the voice. What went wrong? Listening to his recordings today it really is a mystery as to why he failed to capitalise on his initial success. Johnny Bristol deserves to be remembered today.
Someday We Will Be Together to me is the best song Diana Ross did with different background singers. The background singers were not the original Supremes on that record and they were outstanding.
Johnny Bristol wrote a handful of hits for Jr. Walker. "Someday We'll Be Together" were intended for Jr. Walker to record at first but he wasn't too thrilled about it, then produced it on The Supremes and became a blockbuster smash.
@@anclark2063 That's true!! Because at first he didn't want to sing the song "Shotgun". He invited a guy named Fred Paton to do the vocals on the song, but Fred didn't show up for the session. The song almost didn't happen until Berry Gordy suggested that he sing it and the rest is history.
@@anclark2063 Yeah but What Does It Takes was a whole different formula of what he was accustomed to playing. See Jr. Walker was down home, soulful doing all of that yelling on a record, but What Does It Takes was soft and sweet. Jr. Walker didn't record with strings and background vocals on his earlier records. Come See About Me (Junior) was the first song that featured background vocals.
Fun fact Someday isn't really a Supremes song as it only has Diana Ross singing on it. Berry Gordy intended it to be her first solo single but was sure it would go #1 and so he decided it would make a great swan song for her Supremes exit. Also Johnny is actually singing on the record. It's said Diana was tired so during recording , so Johnny got in the studio to sing along with her( Say it, say it, say it again) to ramp up her energy.
Til this day I've always had an overwhelming attraction to Johnny 😍 his music has always drawn me in especially hang on in there 💃🏿❤️ Rest in Heaven Handsome 🙏🏾
Johnny Bristol i first herd his incredible unforgettable song "Hang On In There Baby " i lived in Berlin Germany and hardly spoke any English , but a spark went of in me when i heard that song .
