    Sam, I had often wondered if your family ever watched your videos, and I am so glad to hear that you believe that some of them have. You have such a great way of telling your story while remaining respectful of your family and also the FLDS, especially in regard to your upbringing. I just really want them to know that you have found a way of life that suits you better, you are obviously happy and yet you do not "trash" the FLDS. You are truly a classy guy!!!

    Sam and Amanda- this interview brought me to tears thinking of how oppressed women in your former communities were. The comments about no phones or internet made me think of a show on Netflix I recently saw- Unorthodox. It’s about how a young girl escapes a highly fundamental Jewish community. I’d love to hear you react to it, there seem to be many similarities. Thank you for raising awareness and again congratulations on escalating and becoming confident educated independent people.

    • @NancyCronk
      @NancyCronk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      So many communities seem similar. I have seen TH-cams on Muslim communities, rural Indian communities, fundamentalist Christian communities, ultra-Orthodox Judaism and others who seem just like the ones in this video, as they relate to gender roles and manipulations. Patriarchy is what they all have in common. Patriarchy is a very dangerous thing.

    Thank you, Sam, Melissa, & Amanda Rae for the 2 part collaboration! I had been wondering regarding the similarities and differences in the different groups. Sam is always so so so even tempered, I've never seen him get upset before. To see him so upset about the "seed bearers" was shocking. I guess to those of us on the outside for whom SO much of the life lived and was expected to live is shocking... that's just one more thing, no worse than some of the others. We all have our line in the sand.

    Regarding women working... how fascinating! I would love a video from Melissa about how LDS women typically join MLMs (which I also think are frequently cults) and how that is so so so huge amongst Mormon moms.

    • @GrowingUpinPolygamy
      @GrowingUpinPolygamy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      (Melissa) That is a great video idea! I think the main reason so many LDS women join MLMs is because they can still earn income while staying at home with their children, which we were always taught is the most important and primary duty of a woman.

    • @mrbrightside8835
      @mrbrightside8835 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The order doesn't like to let people work outside of the order so the women usually get low level jobs and do accounting or teaching or something like that the men make the real money however if a job prevents you from having a baby 2 times a year then you have to quit or take breaks

    • @michcarp
      @michcarp ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GrowingUpinPolygamy Melissa, The reason you said they join... that's definitely why they think they're joining, but the reality goes way deeper. More than 99% of people who join those companies lose money - according to research from the Consumer Awareness Institute. Women (and some men) are sold the concept you described in your comment, a stay-at-home-mom's dream come true, but literally more than 9 times out of 10, they lose more money than they make. The reasons people stay in and keep joining MLMs are many of the same reasons people stay in and keep joining religious and other cults.
      Would you be interested in having a conversation about the Fundamentalist-to-MLM pipeline with an anti-MLM podcaster? I'd love to hook that up and I think it's a really good opportunity to shed light on the real reasons many women turn to MLM after leaving high control/high demand groups! My friend I'm thinking of has appeared in documentaries about MLMs and her podcast splits focus between MLM and cults.

    Ohhh so Sam’s idea was like Rumspringa in the Amish community! Because Amish groups practice adult baptism, some communities allow their young people to leave the community for a period or work outside the community to experience another lifestyle before committing to the church and getting baptised. I guess it’s a good way to decide what you really want! You won’t know if you don’t try :)

    I have been LDS since I was 16 and that's been awhile. I am having issues though in the realm of I have more questions than I am getting answers. I am considering going somewhere else but I want to be sure it is the right thing to do. Is just the fact I am questioning a good reason to leave ? I don't have to worry about being shunned or anything like that, but I have a small group of people I would consider friends and I don't want to lose them, but I need either answers or I need to move on, what would you do if in my shoes?

    • @GrowingUpinPolygamy
      @GrowingUpinPolygamy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Some do, but I would say more don't join the LDS church. Tephi did not. Out of my 15 siblings that left, only 2 of us became LDS, and now that I am no longer active, there is only 1 of us that is LDS.

    I heard that they can have kids now in flds but they have to have witnesses or something. I know some people are into the whole voyeur thing but that just seems super awkward to have church members watching you get intimate.

    • @GrowingUpinPolygamy
      @GrowingUpinPolygamy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I hadn't heard that, but it wouldn't surprise me. I also don't know if they would mean "witness" as in actually watching them be intimate or just giving permission for them to have children and "signing off" on it.

    I wish they would’ve done this video more as what it really is. FLDS vs. LDS vs. Kingstons. The 3 cult comparison. That’s really what it is. Or should be. But they should go back and forth between all 3 answering each question comparing all 3. They did that on some of the questions but not all. It’s still clearly only comparing the 2 purposely instead of all 3. Other than that, loved the video. So interesting to hear the comparison. Oh and it amazed me how they didn’t know that they were all branch offs of the same church. I thought that was common knowledge but none of them seemed to know that.

    Great video! Sam your brother who left because he wanted to get married. Did he get married? Are they still out? If so how was there transitions. I’m still surprised only 15 of your siblings are out of the FLDS wonder what is keeping them in they can’t marry they can’t have fun or have children. So sad to be stuck there I hope you can help more get out

    Question I have...we're there any non-white flds members? We grew up near an Amish family, obviously a very white group...the couple couldn't have children though, so they adopted several children, who were mixed race. They definitely stuck out in that community, but we're totally accepted & raised within the Amish faith...did anything similar ever occurs within the FLDS.

    • @tbone9803
      @tbone9803 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No the Amish are white just because no outsiders become Amish and they're from Germany, the FLDS is actively against any interactions with non whites whatsoever

    Wondering how the groups have done during the pandemic. Do they have trust in the medical community? Would they isolate and social distance within the group? Did a large amount pass away like the Native American populations? Was isolation within polyga

    I have a question for Sam and Melissa. Maybe I am wrong but it's my understanding that the LDS Church practices shunning just as much as the FLDS. Is that true? If so, do you support the practice of shunning your own children if they grow up and choose to be a different religion? If so, Are you okay with a prospect of them finding another family to love on your grandkids? I'm sorry if you questions seem offensive or a bit too personal. If you don't feel comfortable making a video about it I'm okay with that but maybe think about it. Also what do you teach your children about people who are not LDS? I have heard people in the LDS have being taught that people that are not in the LDS are not nice good people.

    • @GrowingUpinPolygamy
      @GrowingUpinPolygamy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      In the LDS shunning depends on the family. When we left the LDS church, while some family members were sad about the decision, no one has shunned us at all. I would say the main difference is that the FLDS as a whole church encourages shunning, while the LDS church does not. Of course, some people become shunned by their families, but it is not because the LDS church is telling them to. We do not belong to any religion and are not raising our children with any specific religion right now, so we would be totally supportive of what they choose to believe as they grow older. We teach our children that all people are inherently good and that it is a persons choices, not belief system, that define who they are.

    I get some women don't have a choice and have to work but I do still think women should be raising there kids instead of someone else so they can have a career! Just my opinion but I think children deserve at least one full time parent my husband works 40 hours plus a pay check in over time so I can stay home and raise our babies! I'm very blessed in that aspect!
