One of if not the most memorable scenes in Northern Exposure. Loved and love the show and Holling played by John Collum was wonderful. His singing Ave Maria to Shelley is priceless and soulful and sacred in the best sense of all these words. Thank you for this sublime clip from the episode!!
It was not just the singing of Ave Maria, but also that Holling had set up the entire tableaux in the chapel: the icons and the candles. He set up the whole thing just for his Shelly and gave her the Christmas she ached for. One of the most beautiful scenes of the entire series.
Does anyone remember which episode had the blind guy retuning/playing Holling's piano? I loved the song he played and would like to find out what it was.
Pyroneura Cool! I do have to say that his version is just a tad watered down from others I've listened to here on UT. Either way, a fabulous piece that "soothes the soul" :) Thanks for the info!
I was always amazed at how well the actor and actress made this romance seem so REAL despite the vast age difference. I loved them!

I always get choked up when I watch Holling singing Ave Maria!

unfortunately all the dvds dont' have most of that music, having been replaced with "elevator music". Sigh.
This is on the same level as the christmas episode of M*A*S*H when they all sing Dona Nobis Pacem. 😭
its just the best show ever ...
