Great tips! I will be trying this method. I like how it is so effective in saving our precious fabric. Marking might take extra time but we arent in a race so i appreciate how it makes more accurate blocks❤ Accuracy over speed.😊 thanks, Jessica
Love that you are tackling this. I have a guide-less 1/4” foot for my machine that I use ALL the time. I draw the one line point to point and then run the edge of my 1/4” foot along the far side of the line. It gives me a scant 1/4” and makes for really accurate squares. Just another way to do it! XOX
Thank you for sharing this tip. I use the Wing Clipper tool to trim them down but have recently tried increasing the size of the squares for more accuracy and have been getting those raw pieces. This will be very helpful.
I use this tool for trimming my square corner when making flying geese and it works. I stack the squares and cut multiple at at time. It's called: 302 Corner Cutter, purchased from Perkins Dry Goods online shop.
Thanks so much for that corner snip tip. Ive wondered why i had this problem. Excess fabric there like a knot too. I love all your quilting patterns and quilts . And this tutorial is no. 1 great teaching. I love this fabric too. Wish at that time i bought this. now I'd like to do flying geese with it. Not sure what ill use ive got other layer cakes too. I am doing the star fg one in smaller fg from other tutorial. 2.5x4.5 will take awhile . But I'm like you, just love that one set in the red sashing. Have to make one. And im behind a few blocks on your 2024 sampler. Because i got side tracked making 2 other quilts with some blocks you had which I loved. 😊 it happens, oh the ideas we get. Especially at night when you can't sleep. Thanks so much. Happy Quilting ❤❤looking forward to your next great tip and tutorials 😀
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and for doing so in an awesome way. I surely need to join in on this challenge...as a confident beginner I still steer away from "the geese". lol
I also bought your book awhile back "A Year in Solids." Love this book.... there are several i will make from this , probably not in solids cause my stash has alot of prints. We'll see. ❤❤❤happy Quilting 😊😊
You're welcome! I think you can do either! It depends on the look you are going for. I was thinking I'd be doing dark centers here but I find myself doing dark outsides too. So, really, it depends on whatever part you want to stand out. If you wanted the center triangle to be the focus, you'd do light outsides. If it doesn't matter to you for the project you are working on, then you could do it either way.
Like others, so appreciate your step by step instructions. Q. Is there a way to wind up with a 3/8" space between the "goose head" and "sky/wings"? I come from garment sewing and really appreciate a bit more seam allowance - even though I know I'm going to likely cut it down. And.... I want your scissors (where can I buy a pair like those? they look like a good investment... and I collect scissors)
I'm not sure what those measurements would be. You'd have to experiment to figure it out. I can't find my exact scissors anywhere anymore but you can get something close. If you search "large handled embroidery scissors" on Amazon, some will come up.
I love this method of making flying geese! I find the cutting instructions in patterns, but is there a cutting guide for different sizes available somewhere on line as a reference? Thank you🙂
Thank you for going so in depth on this method. 💚🙂 In your last video they turned out 1/8 too short. Did that get better or are they still a little smaller?
Never made flying geese 4 at a time and I live it!so I’m copying your quilt idea!except I’m making it a queen.how do we show our projects for the guild?
I was planning on using Instagram for that because as far as I know, there is no way to do it here. I set up the hashtag #jessicasmonthlychallenge. If you post a picture, use that hashtag and I should be able to see it (if you account is public).
This method uses very accurate measurements to make exact size flying geese. To get the perfect size flying geese, you need to use the exact measurements.

Helpful tips and insights! Thanks!
Thank you!!!
I’ve always avoid flying geese, because mine have been dreadful! After watching this, I’m definitely going to try again! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Love the Flying Geese! Thank You!

Really good conclusive study finale on the 4 at a time flying geese

You're welcome! Me too to the ideas at night!! Lots of quilts that I want to make still!!
Thanks for the tip.
You're welcome!
Try Jodi Barrows Square in a Square technique for flying geese. You’ll love it and it’s so precise!

Wonderful! Thank you!
Thank you Jessica. I always enjoy your tutorials. Is the body of the flying geese usually the darker fabric?

@@jessica_dayon Thank you. Have a great day.
Such a great tutorial - thank you! What foot are you using on your machine?
34D
I’ve always liked that method…but never knew the sizes to cut.
You can just google 4 at a time flying geese chart and find lots of them.

@@jessica_dayon Thank you for your time and reply. Greatly appreciated.
Jessica, does the 4 at a time method increase the pattern’s fabric requirement amounts to make the FG block.
No, I don't think it does. I would say that it uses less than stitch and flip but I haven't actually calculated and compared.
I love this method of making flying geese! I find the cutting instructions in patterns, but is there a cutting guide for different sizes available somewhere on line as a reference? Thank you🙂
If you just google, 4 at a time flying geese chart, you'll find many charts to choose from with a bunch of measurements.
Thank you for going so in depth on this method. 💚🙂
In your last video they turned out 1/8 too short. Did that get better or are they still a little smaller?
They got better. They measure as they are supposed to now- 4 1/2" x 8 1/2".
@@jessica_dayon Thank you! I suspected they would.🙂
Now I am off trying this 🙂
Are your geese 4x8 finished or unfinished? I wasn’t sure when you said 4c8??😢. Thank you love your videos. ❤
4" x 8" finished

Why not just use a 5” square for the flying geese? Elaine
This method uses very accurate measurements to make exact size flying geese. To get the perfect size flying geese, you need to use the exact measurements.
What Bernina foot are you using to sew these? I am still learning on my first Bernina machine.
I’m to say “a different” block everyday in my comment 2 days ago. Sorry (KH)
