    I've made about forty golf balls in a smaller cage...worked fine. My first attempt at the light bulb with indicated block dimentions and Forstner diameter bit resulted in broken glass all over the floor and cracked block. I have made a second block 3 1/8 x3 1/8 square using a 3 1/4" Forsner bit, wood is poplar, in boiling water 15min. Sides do not bow evenly, bulb goes in some holes but not others, cracking imminet. I'm hoping pocket83 will comment...

    • @pocket83squared
      @pocket83squared 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! You might be using bulbs that are thinner than what was used for the video. Poplar is certainly comparable to what I used, so I'd guess it's the bulb that's giving you trouble. Maybe try looking around for the super-cheap bulbs at a dollar store.

    • @stevewenger7428
      @stevewenger7428 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pocket83squared I am using a std LED bulb which seems pretty robust. Changing the block and bit size was done to reduce the interferance (now about 1/8" ) that has to be overcome. My concern is twofold: extreme vice presure required, and sides do not bow evenly. Am I overlooking something?

    • @pocket83squared
      @pocket83squared 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevewenger7428 Let me offer the easier and more obvious (possible) solution first: Find the correct balance. If you reduce the thickness of the cage enough, eventually the 'pillars' will become flexible. The goal is thus to find the threshold, the tipping point, where you preserve maximum thickness and still get it to go. The trick is to push the materials to their limit.
      Outside of that, some further refinement?
      OK, maybe we're not thinking about the grain enough. The best piece of wood for this sort of thing will be one with a straight, uniform grain. Consider that if the pillars of the cage have different properties, they'll of course bend differently under identical stresses/loads. Rather than just applying a constant, uniform force, let's instead assume that we want to be able to control and direct the force that's being applied.
      In theory, if one pillar starts to bend earlier than does another, it would be possible to even the force out by pressing down on the cage at different rates. Instead of the vice, you might try bar-clamping a large board to your work bench, and then tighten each of its ends appropriately. Such a setup would give you a big vise that has non-parallel jaws. It would even be possible to establish multi-axis, pinpoint control by adding a steel plate and more clamps!

    • @stevewenger7428
      @stevewenger7428 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pocket83squared Thanks for the suggestion; I've thought of this but wasn't sure how to deal with it. Please explain your steel plate idea.. I'll look for thinner, cheaper light bulbs, but GEN3 attempt will definately incorporate your suggestion with bar clamps. Since I only need to enlarge one opening to insert the bulb, bar clamps with fifferant pressures just might be the answer. The bulb in a block is just too cool to abandon; besides, I have 16 more blocks availabel from the poplar board I sawed to began with (grain runs along the long axis of the bloc).

    I'd recommend an LED lightbulb. Less likely to break, you can plug it in without worry about the heat, and it'll be at least 20 years before it goes out. You can also get fancy types that look like edison bulbs.

    • @pocket83

      Sure, but I try to space them out. Like, for example, I haven't done a build for a bit, so that's next. And then maybe a toy, and then maybe some math. If I do too much of one, I lose even more interest- at least, that's my working theory- variety with a spritz of unpredictability.

    I have only watch 2 of your videos so far this one and the one with the 4 pols in between the 2 pieces of wood with the ring puzzle. Anyways you are a very impressive individual and very talented. I throughly enjoy what you do. I found it smart and funny in the other videos description where you let the trolls have it in the most intelligent manner. Also the codes you flash on the screen for a tenth of a second in each video are probably my favorite thing about these videos. And the reason I am commenting. I hardly even comment but the "don't forget to drink your ovaltine" was freaking epic. Do all your videos have a subliminal code puzzle? Anyways keep up the good work.
