    Quite apart from the clever little puzzle, I really thoroughly enjoyed the "instructional video" of woodworking and building the puzzle. You have an unusually good instinct for instruction. The video is well filmed, and shows all the important steps in a way that both explains why you are doing them, and that demonstrates completely the steps involved. I am no woodworker, but I feel like I could indeed reproduce the puzzle by following the steps you demonstrate so well. I'm a tech writer, so I really appreciate well-done instruction and explanations. Thanks very much.

      +garyzim That makes me feel as though I have succeeded, so thanks. But I will admit that it is not instinct at work here so much as it is practice. My early videos were awful.

    I would have put in a little spring to keep the center post up. This would require a little extra downward pressure to open it. Thus, it would be more difficult for someone to accidentally stumble onto the soution.

      +SuperDuckyWho And after perusing the description and comments I'm confused as to why anyone would go batshit psycho over this. It's a TH-cam video, and a fairly interesting one involving good craftsmanship. If it was ACTUALLY impossible then it wouldn't be a puzzle, would it people? It would just be a thing with a ring in the middle. Wtf?

    Despite all the angry comments, I found this video to be very interesting. It really goes to show how us humans sometimes perceive a problem as being impossible to solve because we expect that there is NO WAY the solution would be that simple. We go on trying to solve the problem using overcomplicated steps, to match our overcomplicated perception of the simple issue, while the solution is much simpler. Thanks for this eye-opener.

      I disagree ...it only goes to show, how difficult it is to solve a puzzle ...when it isn't in your hands.
      I feel MOST would look at it, shake it a little, pull at the ring ...then lastly, start on the posts.
      I give this puzzle a difficulty rating of 5/10 - when in your HAND.

    The instructions were great. Thank you. The puzzle though, I thought was not a fair test of intelligence since, as you mentioned, the solver lacks a key piece of information. Unless if the point is to get the silver to think outside of box and test the strength of the device. But by that logic, breaking the device would also work. Am I wrong in that thinking?

    • @SteelBlueVision

      Barry I also thought that it should have been a puzzle and not a hidden latch to remove the ring . I thought the piece was very nice but not much in the realm of mystery

    • @Th3EpitapH
      @Th3EpitapH 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Barry Sabahat does it need to be a fair test of intelligence? also i'd argue that it'd be more appropriate to consider testing the middle rod is simply confirmation that there are no movable parts. that's much closer to attempting to test if the wood blocks separate than deciding to break them. it's not complex, it's simply about information gathering processes instead of information processing and analysis. at least that's my take on it.

    Great video (both the trick and the build)! I am however, slightly concerned and disappointed by the number of abusive comments others have given (my concern being for the influx in insulting or aggressive comments over the years). I don't often comment on TH-cam videos, but here I felt compelled to do so. These people contribute nothing positive whatsoever to anything. Their comments only serve to prove how puerile and offensive they actually are. I admire your resilience and resolve. Keep doing what you're doing; there are actually people out there like me who enjoy your videos!

    • @pocket83
      @pocket83  9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Trust me, I'm glad you're out there. It is my daily hope that the normal, rational people are out there ~reading and watching~ but not actually responding. But I also hope that they agree with my rants for the most part, because I'm hoping that I am normal and rational, too! As for you: Not commenting often may be a sign that you _are_ normal and rational.

      Alex T That's a great philosophy- complacence! Let's just sit here and do nothing, and concede that the entire internet is just a playground for the recently pubescent to work out their primal frustrations however they see fit.
      I have a better idea: we remind each other daily, and by whatever means required, that parts of the internet are a public forum. You may like your town square filled to the brim with screaming illiterates running around shaking their dinkuses at you, but I like an atmosphere that is a little more conducive to creativity while I'm explaining a project.
      There will always still be places that you are free to go for your _other_ activities, but please, take it out of my workshop. Here we use sentences and decency, or else I will chastise you just as if you were misusing a utility knife.

    A small thing you could do to allow yourself to sneakily complete it would be to glue some soft layer (leather, cloth, etc.) over the magnet so it doesn't make a clicking noise when the rod slams onto it.

    • @IVIusicFiend

      That's not an unreasonable or unintelligent question. The answer: probably because of how shocked I was at the time. I had no idea. Now I understand; the mindset of the average online video media consumer is one of anger, entitlement, disrespect, false superiority, and echo-chamber induced ignorance. In fact, most comments are so offensive, insulting, and illegible that I now allow less than 10% of them to be posted. Once a week, I scroll down and look for anything that makes sense, asks a question, or offers legit criticism- and out of a hundred I get a handful.
      They are also surprisingly predictable. The sameness of comments is startling. I can tell you now that your comment will soon have many thumb-ups for its neutral "let's all just get along" appearance, while this reply will go unconsidered. A sentence or two from my description tells you that I am a tyrannical narcissist who can't take criticism- that's all these people need to permanently make up their minds about me.
      And so, my rhetorical question to you is, why wouldn't you want to force such a mob to confront its own self-destruction? What you call "harsh," I call productive. The choice to remain ignorant _should_ be ridiculed. I won't allow it to get comfortable around me.

      Good luck with that one, genuinely. The reputation of the TH-cam comment section came about of the effort of millions upon millions of people. They worked damn hard for the title of "Internet Cesspool" and they won't relinquish it easily. Anyone willing to put forth the effort to stem the tide by at least a few people is much appreciated.

    If would be better if you gave the puzzled victim a false sense of hope with a misleading solution giving them incentive to try and figure it out rather than giving them nothing at all and having them give up right away. Maybe a section cut out from the middle rod the exact size of the ring? Have one piece of the rod glued and keep the other magnetized. Something like that would give them reason to stay and at the same time actually make it harder for them to find the real solution.

    I don't understand why so many people are disliking the video, I found it very fascinating and strangely satisfying. The way he produces his work so precisely is almost mesmerising.
    If it's about the description, then I'm not even going to bother to acknowledge your feelings. He isn't wrong, in fact I agree with pretty much all his points. His video, his rules. He can do what he likes, he doesn't need your permission.

    • @pocket83
      @pocket83  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks. Most people don't read the description. After thousands of complaints, threats, and assorted angry messages, I think I now have a pretty good feeling why. Most of them feel as though I've been dishonest, because they thought this was exclusively about a sophisticated puzzle mechanism, but instead I show a simple 'how to' and then outline a general problem-solving strategy: the law of parsimony. They feel cheated, because they believe that they already _knew_ that. This isn't technically a true "puzzle," at least according to their personal semantic. This was just a selfish grab at views, and a boring one at that.
      Two things still disappoint me. 1) I wish they would realize that my channel is primarily about building things, and that this was meant to be a blank format for making more complex puzzles. 2) If the lesson is so obvious, why don't they all just realize it intuitively early in the video (and then leave), rather than watching the whole thing and then complaining.
      Bottom line: nobody likes to be made to feel dumb, even though more than half of all people _are_ dumb. And this video shows them all that. Also, I'm a cocky jerk that reviles rudeness and entitlement.
      *Statistical note: children, elderly, and the otherwise sick or infirm tip the balance on the Bell curve to easily satisfy my "more than half" claim. Most intelligence assessments don't control for those variables, so the 'average' is probably a standard deviation generous.

    • @rubyshadow9288
      @rubyshadow9288 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      pocket83 You are a really intelligent person, and I admire that. I am very disappointed at the reactions you've received, and I hope it doesn't affect you too badly. This was the first video I have seen on your channel, and you've certainly intrigued my interest... Hopefully I could help you by sharing it with people who I know will appreciate your wonderful work.
      I believe the negative commenters feel threatened by your intelligence, as you aren't afraid to speak out against them and call them out. Don't be discouraged by them, let them entertain and educate themselves. It honestly shouldn't be that hard for them if they took the effort to complain.

    • @pocket83
      @pocket83  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I certainly appreciate your nice words and support. Check my back catalogue; I now have quite a number of videos, and some of them are pretty good (not necessarily the ones with lots of views). I also have a second channel, and the commenters there are great. I chase away the general audience from that channel with periodic videos about birds, train-tracks, children's books, philosophy, and any other boring but intellectually substantive material I can muster.
      Drop me a comment at some point and let me know what you think/thought ;)

    Those other puzzles at the beginning seemed harder, I had a feeling one of the tubes moved. Had I actually tried it in real life I think I could have gotten the ring out faster. Great job on the crafting of it, I enjoyed those parts most.

    Such a beautiful, high-end puzzle and it's so easy to solve. Such a let-down...

    I didn't expect it to be a cheap trick. That is for sure.
    But the work into the making of it is gorgeous.

    Figured the center pole was spring loaded at about 1:04... I was only slightly wrong though.

    It's not really a puzzle, more like a magic trick. Like the equivalent of a sliding door, once you know how it works, people and things can easily move in and out. I don't mean any offense... I just thought it was going to be an actual puzzle.

      None taken, since you didn't call me stupid. It's kind of an anti-puzzle; the point was to remind people to check the obvious first. D'oh!

      I do appreciate the craftsmanship though, it's shiny.

    My grandma had a whole shelf of this stuff, I spent a lot of time at her house, so naturally I found my way through them all after working at them for so long. She had one similar to this, but smaller. Maybe the size of my palm at the time. It's cool to see how it's made, it brings me back.
