Welcome to VoicePlay - what fun! Yes, this quality is exactly what you should always expect from them. This one was arranged by Layne Stein, the beatbox. The bass, Geoff Castellucci, also has a personal channel - that will give you the chance to really hear his range - both in terms of his vocal range, and his skill with different types of music.

No effect for Geoff's super low notes, he really does sing that low. The super low notes are done with the subharmonic technique, which he is very skilled at, but he also is abke to go down to F1 in pure chest voice

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

No effect to create the low note, but his subharmonics in this cover are definitely layered with some reverb effect to thicken them a bit.

@@johndeeregreen4592 Of course VP does some post production for the music videos. They want the best sound for them. But it's always voice or body used as the basic sound. They also add more layers of vocals where it fits their vision of the song.
"A capella" doesn't equal to "live recording" with no effects or post production. :)

They do use effects, and talk about it in interviews. However, Geoff doesn't _need_ any particular effects to hit low notes. They use them (in Layne's words) "because we can". There are numerous concert/live-performance recordings of them on TH-cam, which will give you a good idea what they sound like without any post-production effects. Elvira is a good example that shows off Geoff's upper range, and they don't have a studio version of the song.

Love first time reactors to Voiceplay! They are just the best. They can scare the heck out of you, make you laugh uncontrollably, break your heart, or just give you a toe tapping good time.
Creep or I Can't Make You Love Me - breaks your heart
Drunken Sailor or The Lion Sleeps Tonight - fall down laughing
Hoist the Colours or Valhalla Calling - stunning
They are completely independent, no label, no manager. The arrangements are done by Geoff, the bass, Layne, the beatboxer, and Eli, the rock tenor. Whoever arranges that month is responsible for the full production, editing, costume, set, and makeup decisions and first edit of the track. Each member has a studio in his home and the music is prerecorded, then the video done.
They have had member changes in the last four years, one man short and work with a variety of friends as featured artist.
Subscribed in anticipation of more Voiceplay!

The 'Don't Shut Your Eyes' recommendation really applies to many of their other videos. This was visually simpler than most of their stuff. Also, letting the end play out is because they often add something after the song ends. But sometimes it is as simple as this one where you get a sample of the karaoke track they made for the song. Those are great because it can really let you hear some of the background harmonies they make, that get overpowered by the foreground harmonies. Each singer is often singing multiple tracks in their arrangements.
The arranger on this one was the Beatboxer Layne Stein (far left on screen), but the Bass Geoff Castalucci has done about half of the arrangements. They switch off who does it and whomever arranges the song is also responsible for the directing, primary audio editing and video editing. Final audio is sent out to Ed Boyer, who does many acapella groups audio. Eli (rhymes with jelly) is the tenor to the right of Geoff. The one with that glorious 'Esmeralda'! does all the lighting - often much more complex than this one. And has begun arranging as well (see the cover of RadioHead's "Creep")
Since you apparently like funky, I'm going to suggest their covers of "Superstition" and "Friends on the Other Side" as the obvious place to start. But do not skip their more rock oriented songs. They can be amazing. Eli in particular has a fantastic voice for rock, but they all sound practically unreal!
I'll leave space for someone else to tell you about the other two guys here. Subscribed and off to see what other videos you have!

VoicePlay will always provide lots of fascinating details for a musician/arranger/vocal coach to pick apart. I watch every single critical analysis of VoicePlay's music that I can find and there is a lot less repetition in those analyses than you'd imagine, simply because VoicePlay's arrangements are so complex and unexpected. Either Geoff (the bass) or Layne (vocal percussion)- who tend to take turns creating the group's arrangements- could teach a masterclass in vocal arrangement. There is so much creativity and invention in the music this group creates, and being as they are 100% independent artists (funded only by performances, Patreon and merch) they can take whatever risks they want or perform any style of music they like. And they can be found all over the musical map- you started with a aong from a Disney soundtrack (the Hunchback of Notre Dame) but they have also covered Michael Jackson, the Beatles, Metallica, Aerosmith, Kansas, BTS, Panic! at the Disco, Phantom of the Opera, Charlie Puth, AJR, and Edvard Grieg, just to name a very few. I very much hope you will continue to react to their music; these guys are all phenomenal talents and deserving of as much expose as they can receive. Also, you will just have so much fun! (Seriously- besides their music being absolutely phenomenal and the guys themselves as humble and wholesome as you could wish, VoicePlay's fanbase are a remarkably wonderful and kind group of people who will share your exploration of the group with delight.)

VoicePlay are a unique a capella group; their videos are often theatrical in nature, with costume and settings giving the feel of a mini musical. There are currently four full time members with guest artists making up the five part harmonies. And no, there is no trickery. Geoff's voice is that deep.. In fact he has a five octave range from A0 to A#5. They have three tmies used a violin - played by the vocal percussionsit - but otherwise it's always all vocal. And yes Geoff often plays the villain due to his low voice. His bass laugh is quite something. :) Oh and their arrangments often give us goosebumps and chills.

So glad that you guys enjoyed this cover! This is one of my favorite songs of theirs, it is so amazing. I will give you a bit more background on the group (though I'm sure that a lot of people have done the same haha😅).
They are made up of 4 members as you know which are Geoff Castellucci, Layne Stein, Eli Jacobson, and Cesar De la Rosa. Geoff is the bass of the group. He is one of their main arrangers and also has a 4 or 5-octave range. He does have his own channel where he does some of his own solo work. Layne is the beatboxer of the group. He is another main arranger of the group (this one that you listened to today was one of his). He co-owns PattyCake Productions with Tony Wakim (who is a former member of the group). They film most of their videos in that space. Eli is the tenor of the group. He also does some of the arrangements (his most recent is "Creep originally by Radiohead). He is mostly known as a "rock tenor" because he is really good at going up into that range. He just has a crazy range in general. Last is Cesar, who is the baritone/tenor of the group. He is the newest member of the group who just joined in 2021. He is really expressive in all of their videos.
They are known as the theatre kids of acapella. They put a lot of work into their videos with all of the work that they do for the set, lighting, costumes, and makeup. They are also all amazing at really acting out the songs and showing the emotions of the songs that they do. Some of my recommendations for what songs to check out next are "Drunken Sailor", "Creep", "We Don't Talk About Bruno", "Wicked Medley", "Valhalla Calling", and "Dream On".
I am so glad that you have reacted to them! I would definitely love to hear more insight on the music side of it, I love reactions that go indepth with that. Thank you so much for the great reaction, I have subscribed for more VoicePlay reactions and for any other reactions that you do!!❤

You asked for recommendations about other artists to react to. Let me tell you about Lucy Thomas. She is a 19, soon to be 20 year old girl from Wigan, England. She competed in the Voice Kids, UK in 2018 at the age of 14. She made it to the semi-finals. Chris Broom of Cavendish Records was so impressed with her that he signed her to a record contract. She has released 5 albums since 2019. She will have her first public concert in Manchester on March 5th, 2024. The concert is already sold out. She has collaborated with Chris Broom on a musical about the life of Rosie Boote. The musical is called Rosie. Chris Broom is writing the music and Lucy will star as Rosie. Rosie is scheduled to open in the West End, London in the Fall of 2024. Lucy's TH-cam channel is called lucythomasmusic. In my opinion, Lucy Thomas has the most beautiful singing voice that I have ever heard. She has somewhere around 70 videos on her TH-cam channel covering multiple genres. Most of her content is solo performances. However, she has several duets with her younger sister Martha and a couple of duets with the male singer Will Callan. If you check out her content, I think you will be greatly impressed bye her vocal talent.

Welcome to VoicePlay! Geoff definitely takes people by surprise. He has got one of the lowest bass voices out there, an octavist with a 5 octave range. He has a solo channel, just look up Geoff Castellucci. His version of "16 Tons" is really fun.
Thank you for having that musician checklist. As a trombonist and arranger, there are definitely issues that have limited me, from outward forces like sexism (I've been told "girls can't play trombone as loud as a boy" since I was 14, and I thrive on proving them wrong) to inner forces like comparing myself to others who I simply don't sound like. (I tend to play trombone with a bit of grit, so I love playing rock and ska; I can't compare myself to a classical trombonist, although I received classical training.) I think most of us who love VoicePlay really appreciate reactors who dig into the musicality. We love to be educated! Some of their arrangements are so musically complex, it's hard to break down what we're hearing. For instance, I got permission to use their version of "Can't Help Falling in Love" and arrange it for brass quintet, and those chords are... crunchy!!! Beautiful use of dissonance!

I do love every time I find someone reacting to Voiceplay for the very first time. I really liked your reaction and hope you do more as they have such a wide variety of styles they cover and SO much to comment on if you want to do a deeper analysis. They currently have 4 members and then generally a guest though J None is one of the more common guests and was a member before he joined the navy. They all have insanely wide ranges and abilities to vary their feel but still all have their own distinct tone and style.
Geoff is the bass and has his own channel i think you would love, I think I see Fire (from the Hobbit) showcases his ability to look sound like multiple different people the best.
Layne is an insane beatboxer and has a lovely soft singing voice.
Eli (The small bald one) has an amazing range but is best known for his rock tenor voice.
Cesar has a very distinctive tone and is very sassy but will also make you cry in tracks like Creep.
This track is from the Hunchback of Notre Dame so a Disney musical and is probably the most adult villain song in a Disney film because his obsession is just so human. For something lighter but still Disney try We don't talk about Bruno. So many others, many people have already mentioned. Dragonborn comes (from Skyrim the game) or Halo (for no words..) Hall of the Mountain king (still no words), Valhalla Calling, Seven Nation Army, Nothing else matters (acapella Metallica !) and so on

Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci - Bass, arrangements.
Eli (like jelly) Jacobson - tenor, rock tenor, lighting, arrangements.
Cesar De La Rosa - baritone, tenor.
The bass, Geoff Castellucci has his own channel where he sings solo with instruments. He usually clones himself 3-4 times for harmonies. Each with their own name and personality.... Jeoph, Jeff, Goff and Daryl.
All of his videos are also amazing.

The song is from Disney’s film the Hunchback of Notre Dame is sung by Minister Frollo, a man who feels he more pious than anyone else while simultaneously lusting than after the gypsy Esmeralda. In torment he end up singing this song and you see his descent into madness.
As others will probably comment, whoever does the arrangement generally does almost everything. They are responsible for the storyboard if there’s going to be one, the venue, costumes and the arrangement. Each part is sent to the members who record in their home studio. The person in charge does the initial sound edit as well as directing the video and doing the video edit.
Lately they’ve been incorporating some local friends for assistance. You can always read the credit down below where they will list everyone involved in the production. The production manager for the group is the bass singers wife. Eli, the bald tenor is generally in charge of lighting and tech wizard and has begun doing some more arrangements. We will be hearing more from his side of things this year.
The final mix is sent to Ed Boyer who does the arrangements for the major a cappella groups including Home Free and Pentatonix.
You’ve gotten a lot of recommendations of other pieces as well as a mention of Geoff’s solo channel. My all-time favorite is Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean 3. It has all the majesty of an opera: a sense of drama , make up, incredible music. For a sample of a more traditional a cappella style you might try their cover of Tennessee Whiskey.
There have been changes since they started issuing albums in 1997. Earl, the original high tenor was with them until 2020. Around 2010 their original beatboxer left and Layne switched from baritone. They also had Eli Jacobson the bald tenor join them. Layne’s baritone spot was taken by his current business partner Tony Wakim until 2017. When Tony left, J None , second from the left, filled the baritone spot until the US Navy recruited him for his talent where he sings bass. He still appears as often as possible as a featured artist. When he left in 2021 Cesar de la Rosa, all the way far right, joined the group. They fill in the fifth spot with a variety of guest artists, frequently placing them in the middle.

Welcome to the DEEP rabbit hole that Voiceplay are 🙂.
I like your ways of "taking in" the song/performance, and then explain what you get from it and what you perceive behind it. Voiceplay can be a true mine for such kind of things. Their arrangements, as you noticed for this video, are rich in intricacies, and there are other songs that showcase it even more 🙂.
They cover pretty much ANY genre. All of them have a background as performers at either Disney or Universal theme parks (they're based in Orlando, Florida), so they covered a number of Disney stuff (just as an example, "We don't talk about Bruno", from Encanto... Disney itself hired them to perform it live at a corporate private event, after watching it 😉), but they have covered songs like "Nothing else matters" by Metallica, or "Superstition", or "Dream on" by Aerosmith (part of a "post-apocalyptic trilogy" that includes Imagine Warriors' "Warriors", "Dream on", and White Striipes' "7 Nation Army"), more modern songs like Radioheads' "Creep" (a beautiful arrangement that brought more than a tear to viewers...), Vikings related stuff ("My mother told me" and "Valhalla calling"), sweeter things like "True colours" and "I can't help falling in love", LOTS of Halloween stuff (they actually OWN Halloween 😁), even classical music (their rendition of "In the hall of the Mountain King" from Grieg's "Peer Gynt" is hilarious AND virtuosic at the same time), iconic songs like "Eleanor Rigby" or tributes to a famous group like "Queen in 5 minutes"... Could go on forever 😅. They also have a nice sense of humour, which to me is a very good point. 🙂
Geoff Castellucci, the bass singer, has his own "solo" channel, which is another nice rabbit hole. I'd suggest you to check his two "Hobbit" songs, "Far over the Misty Mountains cold" (from the first movie) and "I see fire" (from the second movie)... and remember that, with the only exception of the Christmas song "Mele Kalikimaka", ALL the voices you hear in his video are his, and ALL the characters you see are him (even if they look different because of makeup and costumes...) 😁.
Another a cappella group that I love as well is Home Free. They're friends with Voiceplay, and extremely talented as well. I'd suggest "Man of constant sorrow" or "Brothers in arms" as a starting point. 🙂
Just subscribed in anticipation of more reactions like this. 🙂
    See you next time!

Layne and Geoff have been changing out on the video projects. Toward the end of 2023, Eli (bald tenor aka Rock God) did the project for Creep (RadioHead) and he will bein the rotation with both Geoff and Layne. VoicePlay is unusual in that they do everything themselves with the exception of the final audio mix (Ed Boyer who does all the big name a capella groups) and for complicated makeup or prosthetics they hire specialists (see In the Hall of the Mountain King). One of VoicePlay's baritones, Tony Wakim (he's the fellow in black with his back to us) gave up on singing and wanted to take up productions, so he and Layne bought a studio (Pattycake Productions) and a lot of Geoff's solos and VoicePlay's are filmed there. No contracts which means they are the sole creators for what they do. The fellow in charge of their monthly video does the arrangement, costuming, staging, pre-mix audio, camera work, etc. The arrangement gets sent to the vocalists, any adjustments get done. Eli does the lighting and any computer generation, green screens, etc. Cesar has his own project (only 2 Loops so far which show the 4 guys doing a fast arrangement for themselves and the new short video is ready to be watched. Loop 1 is of Choose Your Fighter (Barbie movie) and the second one, Geoff won the toss and chose Return to Sender (Elvis). They not only do full-length videos like Hellfire but also TikTok minis (less than 2 minutes) done in the mall outside the studio. Do check out Nothing Else Matters (Metallica). The band Chicago heard this and contacted them to see if they would join them on stage in Nov for their Chicago and Friends concert. They were seriously impressed.

Welcome to the Voiceplay Rabbit Hole. If you need anymore info just ask and im sure you'll get at least one ir ten people answering it.
Quick introduction to the group starting from the left
Layne Stein - beatboxer/vocal percussionist/baritone/alien hiding in plain sight and Founding member (the group used to be call 4:2:five). He arranges about 50% of their songs and is a master at editing. He also co-owns Patty Cake Productions with Tony Wakim (former member, and played the gaurd) where they film most of their videos. He also the jokester of the group.
J None - Baritone and featured artist in this song. He left the group to join the Navy where he sings bass with his current group. Whenever he gets a chance he comes back and joins the group delighting the fans.
Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci - Bass Singer who most people have already told you about. He's also a founding member.
Eli (rhymes with jelly) Jacobson - Tenor/Rock God and helps with arrangements. As of right now he has done two song by himself Eleanor Rigby and Creep (both worth checking out). He gets the fun job of lighting and special effects. He also was the voice for the gaurd in the middle of the song. He is also a professional voice actor.
Cesar de La Rosa - Sassy Baritone and hidden Tenor. Cesar is the newest member of the group, he replaced J None as the Baritone. He also performs with other groups around Orlando Florida (where these guys are based)
