The joy of using Vista on 1GB of RAM..... Don't know why MS recommended that as the minimum amount to use. I think it was because how much RAM was at the time iirc. Would've been much better to have 2GB as the minimum and was a night and day difference. Heard some systems had 512MB.
Except that a Steam deck would be more useful. Unless you run XP or 7 on the UX and don't run modern games. But also check out GPD machines, especially the GPD Win 3. I really want to get one of those.

Nice video . There is now a version of windows 11 known as Tiny 11 which can run low end specs PC even with 2gb ram.i think you should give it a try on this PC
You should use the software that Linus showed recently, after Windows is installed, it will disable all the unnecessary processes and run a bunch of tweaks and fixes. He was using an old PC and it quite sluggish, but after using the software, everything opened instantly, it was borderline hard to believe!
Nifty lil PC. I would have installed Win10 on it, then you can bypass the restrictions from within Windows and do an upgrade to Win11. The performance slowdowns might be due to the CPU thermal throttling with that thermal pad instead of proper thermal paste.
I will be fixing up that thermal paste issue, thanks for the tip. I get the impression that the Windows 10 setup GUI may also have some restrictions as well. For example lower screen resolutions could prevent install, I don't know for sure about that though.
@@JanusCycle good point, maybe install it onto the SSD on another PC and hope that plug'n'play will pick up the drivers once you install it back into the vaio

Most Linux distros will run on a potato pc , that’s the point of them , Linux is more close to the chips than windows , windows is high level shite and needs massive amounts of ram and a fast CPU to run , Linux runs fine on a phone , for example android
@@valley_robot in my 18 using Linux, I have to say that's not necessarily the case. I had terrible trouble in 2021 when loads of distros dropped support for 32-bit machines. I was left with Windows as the only reliable way to run them.
Wow, such a great video. I remember that computer. I used one from a client (and always wanted one for myself, of course). I have a special place in my heart for old and very small computers...
Interesting video and you succeeded!. I have a couple of variations of this machine I'm yet to do a video on. One has the dreaded half white screen and the other side is just lines. Have you had that fault with any of yours?.
That sounds like two faulty LCD panels. Which would be a disappointing result if that's the case. It could be the slide cable. But the problem would appear more intermittent and dynamic. I would try an LCD swap to see what differences happen. That means a full slide mechanism disassembly on both units. Quite an in depth process. Could be a good video, I would certainly watch that.
@@JanusCycle thanks for the info. The faults I described are on the same unit, so one half is white and the other is coloured lines. And I forgot to mention that upon initial startup it works fine, just shows the faults after being on for a while or a restart. I have seen this fault before on other units on eBay. It's a peculiar intermittent fault. Not plucked up the courage to take it apart yet.
@@CariHere GPD are at least trying to make something similar. But Sony could blow everyone out of the water if they competed in the handheld PC gaming market today.
Lovely video man. This looks like a great device and the experiment was pretty cool. You could try and run some emulators on that to benchmark it. Keep going, subscribed!
I bet even gmod 2015 would work fine, since it works on my atom craptop with similar iGPU (yeah, GMA 3150 is similar to GMA 950) To be honest, the only reason why I want this UMPC is zandronum + doom mapping
The new Rufus 3.16 can custom install W11 and turn off all of the silly prerequisites. However, switching to Linux is looking better and better almost daily. Unless you need a specific Windows app you should be able to get vastly better performance out of this little bugger.
I did try AveYo's MediaCreationTool which didn't work for me. I expect it does similar things to the new Rufus. I'm thinking that it could be something like this VAIO's screen resolution of 1024 x 600 that the setup GUI doesn't like. Linux is a good solution and I expect would make this VAIO really quite usable even with the limited RAM.
Windows 11 is Windows 10 with a streamlines GUI lol. Linux has it's place as a modular O.S. but the Windows design is superior for things like gaming lol.
I bought my Vaio UX in 2006, mine was the sexier Japanese version I had imported directly from Japan. It cost a fortune as far as I recall at the time. It was an excellent little machine for running XP, it was by far the most versatile and powerful pocket pc ever, and my eyes were far better back then. I took it with me everywhere and carried a spare battery as its runtime was fairly short. I used it to run music, browsing and even 3ds Max at work as a second pc through an external monitor with mouse and keyboard via the docking station. Yes, it could fling 500,000 poly scenes around with no problems. It really was a gem.
@@JanusCycle Yep, it was sweet. The Japanese versions had the compact flash slot, and naturally I went for the black version with dock, the extended battery and a Sony memory card. It came with a nice belt pouch too which was very handy when out and about. The price was ridiculous of course, I think I paid over $2500 all told for my UX90 plus accessories. The tech was amazing though. SSD, fingerprint reader, backlit keys, touchscreen, size, ports, expandability. Even mobile tv, though not compatible with US stuff. Many regarded it as an expensive toy, It was anything but. I used it as a very reliable workhorse for a good few years and it went everywhere with me. I used to remote desktop my home and work PC's into it to keep track of what they were doing while out, and to run programs I didn't keep on the little Sony. It was a marvel of engineering at the time and everyone who saw it was gobsmacked. It's funny that you can now get something just as small, with far better specs for about $200 knocked out by some Chinese company, though not nearly as sexy 😄
I was looking for something to watch when I was having a bit of a smoke, and you rolled straight into my feed with this absolute banger! I just love this content, and you seem like such a nice fella 😊
Haha love this guy. Very underated, loved that you burned the ISO to disk for the 'visceral' experience. Would of killed to have one of these back in the day. Must of retailed for quite the fortune.
I just discovered your channel thanks to this video popping up in the algorithm. I liked and subscribed. I started to comment and suggest Tiny 11 might be worthwhile to try but I had the good sense to put this in mini-screen mode and check out the rest of your channel. It turns out you've already done that. I'll watch it in about an hour after this week's rerun of "Star Trek: TOS". I wish they'd use this form factor for an Xperia Phone with a Samsung DEX-like desktop skin over Android that supports proper multitasking and windowed apps. They'd sell dozens; which is why they'll never do it. I'd buy one though.
dude, fantastic video. don't sweat the thermal paste; non-engineers get too worked up. it's only supposed to fill the non-contacting surfaces, not the whole blinking plate. I'd have just gone with the dried paste left on the heatsink; thermal coefficient more than good enough.
I used to drool over these in my nearest Sony Store. Of course, saving up for a similarly-specced laptop was hard enough at the time, so it was nothing more than pure fantasy. The industrial design and miniaturisation got my mind racing back then, so it's kind of funny in retrospect how some aspects of the internal construction now seem pretty big compared to modern phones and laptops! I also drooled over both gens of Sony Mylo at the time, of which this bears quite the family resemblance to the second-gen. (The first-gen Mylo has more of a family resemblance to products like Rolly and their solid state Walkmen. The PSP Go is pretty much a 2g Mylo shell with different controls!) Though I've never bothered trying to get one when they were at their price nadir, because most if not all of the network features sadly no longer worked by then. Which at least can't be said for a Windows PC like this!
If you think about it, the 2006 Handheld Sony Vaio was probably the closest thing to a smartphone pre-2007 since 2007 was when the first smartphone (iPhone 2G) was released
Had me subbed with that exceptional level of class and style. Android would bring a lot of life into that little machine, maybe even steam stream pc games like BG3. Partition the SSD out for multi-boot and have a partition for XP x64, Windows 8.1, Android, and even dare I say Emulation?!?! The levels of nostalgia may just break the internet.
I know this series, but never used it, but it at least had some of the technologies and features essential in today's computers, and despite being slow for today's OSes, they seem useful.

NT is actually the only Windows lineage now (with Windows CE been buried over a decade ago after even mobile devices had become powerful enough to run NT kernel). The current Windows is Windows NT 10 (better known as Windows 10 and Windows 11), Windows NT 6.2 was Windows 8, Windows NT 6.1 was Windows 7 and so on. Windows NT started in 1993 as a portable (ran on different architectures, today it runs on x86-64 and ARM64, historically it aslo ran on PowerPC, DEC Alpha, Itanium and MIPS) server and worsktation OS without dependency on DOS. It wasn't initially popular in the consumer segment due to higher hardware requirements and poor compatibilty with DOS apps (it ran them in a VM), but for serious tasks it was good thanks to its stability, better security and support for multiprocessing. Windows NT 5.1 (better known as Windows XP) was the first version to become mainstream in the consumer segment.
I loved this Sony there were also rivals but I digress. When I looked down and saw the Galaxy S23 Ultra in one hand and my stylus in the other I have a distinct feeling we have come much further than even we who owned these old units can fully comprehend. i am in love with this type of hardware, thanks for all the videos :)
I've been binging your videos recently. Your videos are so interesting and insightful. A nerd goldmine. You deserve x100 the views.
Hey thanks for the compliments. I've been wondering if my channel has any consistency or if my videos are mostly watched as one offs. Your comment really helps, thank you.
Oh man finally a channel with the same tastes in portable computing as me
cool :)
its so satisfying to see each step of your projects come together, especially with things that are modifications that, by all accounts, should be disallowed from working by corporations like microsoft. good work m8, love your work.
you certainly know how to combine techvideos with a sort of visual asmr .. loving this so much
This was an awesome project to watch you do. I love doing stuff like this with my older devices, and I didnt know Sony made that little VAIO or I would have bought one back then. I currently use a GPD WIN 3 for my day to day UMPC use and im supper happy with it. Thanks for posting this content and you got another subscriber!
Great to hear from another GPD WIN 3 owner!
I bought mine second hand recently and I really like it. It feels really good to have a modern UMPC. I also like the way it's design was inspired by the look of this VAIO.
I'm really glad to hear you keep older devices and still do stuff with them as well. Thanks for letting me know.
The joy of using Vista on 1GB of RAM.....
Don't know why MS recommended that as the minimum amount to use. I think it was because how much RAM was at the time iirc. Would've been much better to have 2GB as the minimum and was a night and day difference. Heard some systems had 512MB.
sounds like a moment when hardware wasn't ready for vista
I have an old laptop that has Windows vista on it from the factory as well as 512mb ram
@@TheRideGaming idk what the manufacturers were thinking installing 512MB when it was bad enough with 1TB.

I agree, Sony are the masters of industrial design.
@@JanusCycle how about Asus EeePc, it looks sick!
It's actually very cool to see how the thing was actually built... So much engeneering.
wonderful video. amazing what you can do with old technology. you've made me more interested in picking up one of these rather than a steam deck
Except that a Steam deck would be more useful. Unless you run XP or 7 on the UX and don't run modern games. But also check out GPD machines, especially the GPD Win 3. I really want to get one of those.

Your Asthetic of the video is amazing...it's so calming and soothing....I really started to get sleepy watching your video like a asmr...btw Nice video...the mini PC is too good
Hey thank you, I love the idea of having late evening videos to chill with :)
Nice video . There is now a version of windows 11 known as Tiny 11 which can run low end specs PC even with 2gb ram.i think you should give it a try on this PC
That's a neat trick installing Windows 11 via the command terminal and bypassing the GUI!
You should use the software that Linus showed recently, after Windows is installed, it will disable all the unnecessary processes and run a bunch of tweaks and fixes. He was using an old PC and it quite sluggish, but after using the software, everything opened instantly, it was borderline hard to believe!
Thank you, I'll check that out.
Nice experience! Spinning DVD disk looks so mesmerizing!
It's harder to bypass it within windows
VGN-UX390N owner here who sent my motherboard into a community member to have the Core Solo swapped out for a Core 2 Duo. Can definitely tell you that it runs HOT. I also had a 120 GB HDD sandwiched in there! So, every bit of thermal performance you can squeeze out of it is important.
I remember being fascinated with the pocket computer and wanted to one. Still looks cooler than today's tablet computers. 😎
Great video!! I really have to get one of those! Such a cool device, great job getting it installed.
Thank you. With the UX now a vintage machine, it's nice to see it have one more go at being futuristic. Your videos are great also, you deserve more subscribers.

Sure missed these old Sony Vaio products and pocket laptop. Loved those years.
You're channel is a gem. Really underated. I really enjoyed watching.
Great to hear, I really enjoy making these videos :)
I'm more impressed by the fact that it found drivers for the touch screen, sound and graphics.
It would be interesting to see how well it runs a Linux distro, like Manjaro or Mint, then bench-marking them against the Windows 11 install.
This is what i want
@@luisrodriguez3699 this is not what i want

There is something fascinating about these. I’m glad you enjoyed this.
While not a big Mac fan, the obvious choice is to turn it into a Hackintosh.
agreed :)
Can't believe Windows 11 still got device drivers for this VAIO portable PC for all its peripherals !
I can't believe they put a core 2 in that tiny thing!
Would've impressed me so much in grade school
Yeah, Sony didn't compromise when putting a real CPU in a handheld!
@@JanusCycle I wish someone would make something similar today
@@CariHere GPD are at least trying to make something similar.
But Sony could blow everyone out of the water if they competed in the handheld PC gaming market today.
@@JanusCycle lol if I bought enough stock shares of Sony, maybe I could suggest it 🤭🤭🤭
Lovely video man. This looks like a great device and the experiment was pretty cool. You could try and run some emulators on that to benchmark it.
Keep going, subscribed!
Thank you so much. I will be revisiting this machine in the future. There are just so many videos that need making.
I bet even gmod 2015 would work fine, since it works on my atom craptop with similar iGPU (yeah, GMA 3150 is similar to GMA 950)
To be honest, the only reason why I want this UMPC is zandronum + doom mapping
This video was so classy, a cold Martini just materialised in my hands.
Thank you sir
My man turned a tech review into a cinematic promo video for Sony UMPC.
I had to take a breath at 10:57, that shot is absolutely amazing.
Awesome to hear from an original UX owner. It must have been amazing to have such a hi-tech device directly from Japan.
When I was a kid I WANTED THIS UNIT SOOOOO BADLY
I was looking for something to watch when I was having a bit of a smoke, and you rolled straight into my feed with this absolute banger!
I just love this content, and you seem like such a nice fella 😊
Hey thanks, I appreciate hearing that. I hope you enjoyed the high.
Haha love this guy. Very underated, loved that you burned the ISO to disk for the 'visceral' experience.
Would of killed to have one of these back in the day. Must of retailed for quite the fortune.
This computer just remember me on my first "smartphone". Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. I liked it alot. And the keyboard was so cool to slide out.
I ;never knew they made a Sidekick on steroids...and you just shot it up nearly as much juice as it can handle. Mad man.
A man who knows his priorities and the importance of Star Trek :) I like your take for an Xperia phone, there would be a niche for that.
Blows my mind how great the display on this thing looks.
This is amazing. Love the DVD spinning shots!
dude, fantastic video. don't sweat the thermal paste; non-engineers get too worked up. it's only supposed to fill the non-contacting surfaces, not the whole blinking plate. I'd have just gone with the dried paste left on the heatsink; thermal coefficient more than good enough.
Thanks, the temps have been fine with the pad. The high priests of overclocking have a lot of influence over the 'correct' ways of doing things.
The keyboard on this thing is killer. Something from an episode of 24. 😎
Fascinating seeing a Core 2 laptop condensed down to handheld format
Cool video! I didn't know this retro tech even existed!
Salvation was so good, that intro, TTO...
This is crazy! Now, soon every smartphone will be on Windows 11! 🔥🔥
I remember wanting one of these so bad when I was 15!
sir i am truly amazed by your videos
Had me subbed with that exceptional level of class and style. Android would bring a lot of life into that little machine, maybe even steam stream pc games like BG3. Partition the SSD out for multi-boot and have a partition for XP x64, Windows 8.1, Android, and even dare I say Emulation?!?! The levels of nostalgia may just break the internet.
I like your idea for multiboot. I must try some more OSs. Thank you. I'm really glad you are enjoying these videos.

I think I first remember seeing this in Paul Blart Mall Cop.
I know this series, but never used it, but it at least had some of the technologies and features essential in today's computers, and despite being slow for today's OSes, they seem useful.
They were very useful, but only in certain ways, and only if you could afford that sort of high end gear.
Now, THAT is quite an unexpected journey :) Merci :)
i just can't believe that this 15 year old micropc can run windows 11 but my 9 year old pc can't. what a masterpiece of old technology to the latest technology being usable on this tiny pc, INCREDIBLE
The fact that the pen inputs and little mouse nub work just amaze me
re 0:25 'geez doc; you built a windows 11 PC out of a vaio?' ;)
very nice vid. I do like that you managed to bypass all the roadblocks with CMD lines etc - very tricky.
If you were going for the FULL visceroul experience on the cd drive; you could have used it to eat lasagne (?) off afterward.. (thinking that was the one.. ie restoring the floppy)
Nice to see some old medium spinup tho.. reminicing about old burning days.. that media sure outdated fast ('this space reserved for laserdiscs')
i'd say something like tiny11 should be interesting, maybe it allows for much lower idle and makes it closer to the native experience

Lots of shipping companies still use CE in barcode scanners.
You are the man!
Am jealous of this!
That thing is really cool.
Very Good! Thank you for this kind of great Videos and Ideas!
VAIO: You expect me to crash?
W11: No, Mister Vaio. I expect you to die.
I loved this Sony there were also rivals but I digress. When I looked down and saw the Galaxy S23 Ultra in one hand and my stylus in the other I have a distinct feeling we have come much further than even we who owned these old units can fully comprehend. Yes this was amazing tech at the time. I still have a Sharp Zaurus, and a 286 shoebox computer(really).
I appreciate modern tech very much. But I also appreciated and wanted much of this old tech when it first came out. It's great to go back and try the stuff I couldn't afford at the time.
