I rate the iron man match as one of the greatest WrestleMania matches ever! If you are a fan of technical wrestling, submission wrestling, basically wrestling at its purest form then that match had it all and more! It is the perfect example of a top level match! Plus add the significance of the outcome and the storyline, HBK wins his first world title, Bret goes on a hiatus for a while and returns to feud with Stone Cold resulting in two more epic matches! WrestleMania 13 Bret Vs Austin results in the double turn, Bret going heel and Austin turning face, allowing for the 3:16 era to truly kick into full flow. Bret continues his feud with HBK in which time DX are formed, the Hart foundation reunite and the Montréal screwjob happens in 97. Leading to HBK Vs Stone Cold at WrestleMania 14 and Stone cold's first world title. All of that came as a result of the iron man match and it's influence on the business.
You and me both. That's actually my favorite match period. How crazy is it, Bret and Shawn is #1, Bret and Austin is #2, Shawn & Austin is #3. All 3 guys are in 2 of my favorites. Crazy to me... 🙄
Great event! I was such a hitman fan, took me years to get over his defeat to Shawn at mania! Shame Shawn lost his 😃 and never gave bret a rematch the following mania! Oh well, survivor series 92 was a great main event between the two too!
Bret was a whiner, great great wrestler did a lot to help Stone Cold Steve Austins career deserves all respect and credit where its due but nobody likes a whiner
Can you blame him? The human being Jim Hellwig must have been insufferable imagine being around a wrestler whos "on" 24/7 & thinks he's intelligent but does nothing but talk total bollocks he must have been a fucking nightmare to be around let alone manage.

This was my Wrestlemania 6 as a kid. I had been a Bret Hart fan for years but was happy Shawn won. In hindsight,I much prefer Bret as champion but this was great storytelling in making Shawn THE MAN.
A lot of people don’t give the Iron Man match the credit it deserves. It was a great match and it had two top stars both of them Babyface at the time it was a epic match and this is when wrestling titles were prestigious and not treated like props like they are now
Small package finish was Survivor Series 95 when Bret beat Diesel for the title in the first place. Feb 96 IYH was a cage match where Undertaker came from under the ring and pulled Diesel down, allowing Bret to escape the cage.
The hypocrisy of the WWF at the time with the Geriatric match...Piper, Warrior and Jake were all in prominent positions on this show, and they were all older or almost as old as Macho and Hulk...
Again, I like Paul however I was dissapointed how he rushed through the Iron Man match and seemingly didn't do enough research on what happened. For example he failed to identify 2 facts about the match. 1. At some point in the match they do a spot while Bret was outside the ring. Shawn goes up to the top turnbuckle and does a splash aiming for Bret. However he misses the target and is about to surely crash into the guard rail and concrete floor! However Bret thought real quick recognising Shawn was in danger and catches him early and pulls him back on top of him and saves him.
I knew JR was going to get backlash for the Austin comments on last week’s show. I know he was saying it as a friend but it def could have been interpreted as sabotaging the opposing company’s surprise. He was going a little hard to point out that Austin cant go like he use to lol. Like Sting is on their show not looking like a gothic grandpa but hey.
Paul I like you and am glad Conrad has you involved but regarding 'Bret refusing Nash's finish' @ IYH Feb '96 you didn't give JR the full reason Bash gave on why he refused his finish. According to Nash it was he, Bret and Taker going over the finish (as Taker was involved). Nash suggested to Bret to let him powerbomb him to look like he had Bret beaten for Taker to intervene. Nash suggested this as it was a beautiful payback for Taker after Nash screwed Taker at Rumble '96 after he Tombstoned Bret and had him beaten. But Bret was stubborn and refused the powerbomb (not because of any back issues) but because he said to Nash' I don't want to look weak'. Then in that meeting after Taker heard Bret refuae he said: "Motherfu**er its not always about you". Bret was and always will be my favourite of all time, but in this instance his ego got in the way. That's what happened.
He also twisted the story of Hall flunking the drug test. It wasn't that hall failed the test then decided to give notice. It was that Hall already gave notice THEN they let word get out about it and in Halls mind it was because he was leaving. This and the Nash story send Jim down the wrong road of thought because he isn't given the correct info, then people shit on Jim for not knowing what he is talking about.
Eh,I’ve always understood Nash’s grievance over this but he and Hall were leaving and im sure the boys(Bret) knew that and much like the logic behind Montreal…Why are we giving this guy momentum or doing his finish when he isnt even gonna be here much longer. Nash & Hall had WCW down the pipeline and werent shy in saying so,I get Bret’s logic here.
Going to be crucified for this I'm sure. I enjoy Grilling JR & love & respect Jim Ross. He's the GOAT of announcers. But he thoroughly enjoys bashing Warrior. I'm not defending Mr. Hellwig & no I never had to deal with the man. But if a person didn't play high school or college football or wasn't a division 1 all American JR comes off as if they aren't able to play on the wrestling team. More wrestlers than not made it big without those credentials than did. & most of those great collegiate athletes didn't succeed. I know there are a few but just because you don't play football or were not an amateur wrestler before becoming a pro wrestler doesnt mean you can't do it.
i don't think this is quite fair. he loves terry gordy, barry windham, Micky Foley, respects the hell out of Sting, talks positively of Michael PS Hayes, and many more who were not d1 athletes or amateur wrestling standouts. he doesn't like Warrior though, that's true. but few speak in very glowing terms of Helwig. Prichard is one of the few who is balanced speaking of his positive attributes while acknowledging his negatives
The iron match is overated...that doesnt mean it wasnt good, coz it was, but those who say its the greatest match of all time make me laugh. Its not even in the top 10 best wrestlemania matches. Never mind best ever match.
I guess it doesn’t fit in with his rhetoric that a lot of fans left in droves after seeing warrior perform. Also he had lots of long matches, during his prime, when this overrated hack wasn’t at the wwf. A professional doesn’t berate former talent, which he doesn’t constantly, and hating on a dead man who can’t defend himself.

I can't believe you didn't ask JR why there were no falls in the main event. That was my biggest reason for listening to this.
It was Pattersons idea
@@robhagle Has anyone elaborated on it? Frankly I always assumed it was because Bret and Shawn didn't trust each other.
by 1996 the 60-minute match was very out of fashion. but as a 14-year old accustomed to 5-15min wwf matches i thought this was epic and awesome.

Passive income.
Why hasn’t Paul taken over for Conrad on any of the other shows?
Vince had removed JR from major broadcasts, so the idea of him producing the announcers (including you-know-who) is vaguely hilarious...

Shawn Michaels winning back to back rumbles was not unprecedented as Paul said. Hogan won RR ' 90 and '91.
