  • Hello you - if this is your first time here then welcome. We are David and Ian and we've just moved from a one bedroom flat in London to a three bedroom house in the Hamptons... well, Southampton.
    We are back on the road this week as we head to Cornwall to celebrate Ian's Dad's birthday. As you may or may not know we have a Renault Zoe ZE50 GT Line R135 that we subscribe to on a monthly basis from Onto. Onto are an electric car [EV] subscription service. When you order a car they will deliver it to your door and insurance, road tax, congestion charge, servicing, and charging is included in the price. And when you end your subscription they will even come and collect it from you too!
    We pay £399 a month for our Zoe and we love it.
    If you sign up to Onto yourself why not use our referral code. If you do we both get £50 off:
    Our code is: 1fbbf
    Pop over to www.on.to for more details.
    We openly admit that we have "Range Anxiety" the fear that you will not have enough charge in the car to get where you need to get to [and back]. This is the story of our drive to Cornwall and back and what we do to ensure that we dont run out of juice!

    Thanks for bringing us along! From time to time I’ll hire a car for things and this is so much better value than paying £200 for a weekend hire. I think I’d have range anxiety too but I’m loving the fact that stopping to charge means more opportunity for snacking! That’s a major selling point for me! x

      The local Instavolt to us here is in the car park for shops...and a KFC! So we realised even though it may be free to charge we end up paying more on a KFC blow out than it would cost us to charge and pay for it in Lidl! But yes, any chance to combine a charge and munch and we're on it, Beth!

      @@MrDavidMrIan I’m still getting my head around range & planning my trip. It was great to see I’m not alone. But in Australia public chargers are a mess. Type 1 type 2 chademo the list goes on. So I carry a granny charger as power outlets can be found.

    • @MrDavidMrIan
      @MrDavidMrIan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scottheim8861 We hear ya Scott. We have a granny charger too - but it’s not long enough to reach any socket at my parents. And you can’t use an extension cable either 🤦🏼‍♂️
      And it’s the number of different companies that offer charging but it’s exhausting signing up to apps or ordering a taptap card.
      But it feels less guilty popping out locally in the EV compared to a petrol car, so at least that is something!

    Great vlog and how funny as my husbands Grandad used to own the bungalow and Starbucks site at Corfe Mullen, then when he passed away my husbands Dad sold it when my husband was about 22 years old, but his Grandad is buried in Corfe Mullen so we have been down occasionally and always stopped at that Starbucks 😊 have a fab weekend xx

    I must admit I would definitely have range anxiety too with an EV. I’m bad enough with petrol , I never let my tank get below half full before I fill it up. But I know EV are the future so hopefully chargers will be much more available and more reliable by then. Glad you had a nice visit with Ian’s parents. X

      We guess, like with any car, you get used to it and how much power it takes to get to places, so the anxiety should decrease? 🤷🏼‍♂️ We hope so anyway!

    We used to have a Zoe and now own a Leaf - we've been driving an EV for seven years and definitely would not go back to petrol. Oh my, have we had the odd anxiety range! but feel for us, for the handful of journeys that causes this, it's so worth it for all the added benefits. It's all about planning, and practice makes perfect ..... It doesn't suit everyone right now, but it will have to in the future ❤️ Thanks for this lovely informative vlog xx

      We do remember the lovely comment from both you and Kev about your Leaf and Zoe experience. So you’re our EV inspiration! We feel like we will stick with an EV - and as soon as we can we will go for one with a longer range cos parents are just too damn far!

      You’re welcome guys.
      We worked out our route and how many miles it was, and then we used the Zap Map and Instavolt apps to check what chargers (and speed of those chargers ) along the route are - and then worked out some plan Bs. It’s definitely doable though.

    We have the Zoe, and love it. We do own it. I do agree with range anxiety. We have family in Reading and now live in Wales. We have a charger at home (which can recommend as it is a good feeling to start a journey with 100%) my OH was to travelling to Wales to from Reading and all the motorway ones were not working or in use he ended up in Bristol in a car park. I think he uses Zap Map. It’s all about the planning, anyways good vlog and thank you.

    • @MrDavidMrIan
      @MrDavidMrIan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We use Zap Map too but it’s a bit clunky and doesn’t show (or didn’t last time we used it) InstaVolt chargers for some reason, even though we set the filter to do so.
      And I’ve stopped in motorway services to use the charger and you scan the QR code and the app said that it was in use, when it clearly wasn’t as I was stood there and could see the charger gun was in the holder. Bloody thing!! So inconsistent! 🤦🏼‍♂️

      Bless you! And thank you!
      Cornwall is a bit of black hole when it comes to chargers - particularly fast ones. It’s ok if you want to use a 7kWh free one at Tesco but that’s not going to get you back!
      We’ve learnt how to factor in a couple of options for charging as invariably they’re usually taken and we need a plan B! If you discover any hidden gems then do let us know!
      We found one at Tesburn St Mary, just off the A30 the other side of Exeter. A Swarco one that takes cards. And there’s a local pub to wait in.

    What can I say? Oh yes - Thanks for sharing the reality of EV long distance trips. You are very patient. Charging is both a lottery and an inconvenience. Many parts of the UK lack sufficient charge points. The Onto free charging is very good, as Instavolt charge 75p per Kwh. This includes full VAT at 20%. suddenly petrol isnt so expensive. Charge from home and pay 5% VAT and a lower cost per Kwh.
    We can look forward to higher EV insurance as it costs 25% more to sort an EV after an accident. Government legislation is likely to control how EVs must be handled if the traction battery or case is damaged. Let them eat cake!

    Hi there gents :) Oh wow, this is really fab and so interesting as I have absolute zero knowledge of how it all works with an electric car! I can totally empathise with 'range anxiety' as I too would definitely feel that too , so just great to see how it all panned out! Hopefully over the next year or so, there's going to be lots more charging facilities installed all over the UK. But am thrilled to hear that most of these current stop offs have lovely food options too!!! :) Nice little farm shop with tea, soup & cakes!! Nom Nom! :)
    I think my biggest fear would be stuck in a crazy traffic jam with little movement and fear of the battery running flat???? eek!!!! But thanks guys as I'm now going to google electric cars & have a read up wheareas I've always thought, oooh no ...no....! lol Hope you're both having a lovely weekend :)

    • @MrDavidMrIan
      @MrDavidMrIan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Debbilicious!
      Yes, it is good that we use the option to charge as a chance to stuff our faces! Always a bonus!
      What we didn’t say is that the car has “regenerative braking” so when you freewheel or break it recharges the battery a bit - which is why the first stop didn’t reduce the battery loads as there are many times when your just cruise to a red light or roundabout and it chargers the battery. Or going down Hill! It’s great!
      It definitely makes you think about how you drive - how you accelerate and how soon you take your foot off the power when you can see a red light ahead. We genuinely love it.
      Hope you’re well and hope you have a smashing weekend x

      We stared thinking we were going to lease one but didn’t know what to go for and then discovered Onto. And the more we looked into it the more it felt like a less risky option - if only for a month or two to see how we got on with an EV and the potential challenges over distance and charging etc. from not having a car to having one delivered to your door with insurance etc included it was really hassle free at a time when life was hectic. And now we can change up to a different model (if budget allows or circumstances need it, and as technology improves) as many times as we need to. For now Onto works for us - so definitely something we’d have others consider before making the leap.
      Hope you’re both well xx

      @MrDavidMrIan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! That is the best but of a road trip, Julie! Obviously there are cars that have a greater range - but they have a greater ride tag too - but for nipping around town the Zoe works for us.
      Also the technology seems to improve every year so by the time your lease expires things will be different again.
      Hope you like what you end up with!

      Cheers Tink. We genuinely love our car - otherwise we wouldn’t persevere with working out the best plans for long journeys! Public chargers - especially the fast ones so cost a bit more if you had to pay for them. To put it in context, we’ve done 2000 miles in the car and aside from the free charging we’ve only spent £80 at the one round the corner at Lidl. But yes, a 300 mile trip would need a bit of planning for a stop off (or two) drowning on your car and it’s range. Some do around 250 per charge.

      Sorry that you’re logged in and working - that sucks. Hope you get it completed sooner rather than later.

    • @MrDavidMrIan
      @MrDavidMrIan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The good things about hills is that when you go downhill the car has regenerative braking so when you’re foot is off the pedal it recharges the battery. Same for when you’re cruising and braking. So the uphill battery loss could be cancelled by the charge you get back for going downhill.

    The Zoe can't take more than 46KW, so it doesn't matter at all if you have to share the 120KW charger

    • @MrDavidMrIan
      @MrDavidMrIan  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s true, however that assumes that even shared the combined charge gets to 120kw. Often, understandably, the pull is much less than the advertised rate... so you increase your odds in getting close to 46kw with the fastest charger you can plug into.
      Often Charging on an InstaVolt 50Kw charger the rate is around 20kw due to time of day and other geographical dependencies.

    ONTO have gone from 1000 miles a month at an all inclusive price of 399 to 750 miles at 499 btw pointless charging the Zoe at anything above 50 KW that’s as fast as it can charge.

    • @MrDavidMrIan
      @MrDavidMrIan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they have made changes to their offering since we filmed but the pricing and offer still, currently, works for us.
      And even though the Zoe won’t charge faster than 50Kw, some of the faster chargers charge at a lower rate depending on the location, draw from the power supply and whether there are other cars charging. We’re often at a 50Kw charger and it charges at a lower rate. So the logic of going to a charger that chargers at a higher than 50Kw is that, hopefully, we’ll get close to a 59Kwh charge as possible.

    • @ashleymorris7899
      @ashleymorris7899 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrDavidMrIan ah ok fair enough that makes sense actually, you’re right some of them do drop down to a much lower rate when two charge at the same time. Nearly went back to ONTO but they just told me they have now dropped BP entirely and if you still want Instavolt it’s an extra 129 on top of the charging premium that you now already have to pay to have charging with Shell included, this would make the Zoe GT £629 PM basically a second mortgage, glad you’re still enjoying it but for me it’s no longer value for money.

      Hi Bez. All of the quick service and table service places in Disney will have gluten free options (and other allergy and intolerance options). When booking table service on the app you could flag the allergy or intolerance, and when using the app to order quick service food you could also choose the allergy free options - however we’ve not used the app since 2020 so unsure if the functionality has changed. Either way Disney do offer allergy friendly food options across all sites.
      Pretty sure Universal would be the same.
      However we can’t speak about the specifics of other locations, but would surprised if most places didn’t cater for it in some way.

    Subscribing is a crazy, crazy expensive way to own a car.

    • @MrDavidMrIan
      @MrDavidMrIan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not for everyone, we get that, however we can give it back at anytime and the expense ends at that point; we don’t have to pay insurance; it costs £9 a day for work (for parking - as opposed to £9 for parking at the station and £70 return train ticket, plus London Congestion charge); and 5000 miles so far has only cost us £170 in electric (because we’ve not used the free electric that comes as part of the subscription for all of our charges) so if you offset what 5000 miles would have cost in a petrol car, and the cost of commuting by train, it really isn’t that crazy expensive.
      Plus we are not tied into a lease deal with capped mileage nor do we have to fork out for a brand new car we are stuck with that loses value the moment it leaves the forecourt.
      As we said, we know it’s not for everyone but after we did the maths it works for us!

    • @cap_scarlet8152
      @cap_scarlet8152 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrDavidMrIan I get that and agree it is (for some people) a painless form of ownership. But think about the following: Electricity (if, like me, you're charging at home) would cost around £550 for 8,000 a year (at current rates), insurance is around £200 and servicing is £100 (based on Renaults own 3-year plan which costs £299). So that around £850 per annum for the "on-top" cost of ownership. The purchase price of the Zoe is (currently)£30,500. I paid £25,750 for a 3-month old example. Residual values are estimated at 42% after 3 years, so lets say £13,000. Over 3 years the cost to me should be depreciation of £12,750 (£25,750-£13,000) plus 3x annual running costs of £850 = £2550, so lets say c. £15,300. That compares to leasing of c. £18,000 over 3-years. Actuallly not as bad as I thought once i did the math but still expensive.
