A little bit niche, but despite its size the Zoe will transport a full-size wheelchair with all the seats in place. It does require the parcel shelf to be removed but the boot is so deep it will stand upright and leave you with all the seats usable (and still have rear vision),

18 reg ZE40 owner. 45 mile a day commute for work on normal roads, very little urban driving. The Zoe achieves 160 in the summer and last winter about 120 miles. Now on 68k, driven 20k in two years of ownership. According to Autotrader the car is worth 5k trade, 6.5k private sale. At the start of the year it was worth about 8k. In a world of rising prices the Zoe is an absolute steal.

I bought a 6 month old Zoe ZE50 three years ago from my local Renault dealer. It's now driven almost 70k miles and has been a fantastic buy. No noticeable battery degradation and the range still compares well to the latest small EV models.
Where it is beginning to look dated is the max DC charging speed of 50kW, although the ability to charge at 22kW AC has been useful on several occasions!
Battery lease was discontinued before ZE50 was launched. So all ZE50's should be battery owned. CCS was an optional extra on 2020 models, but became standard from 2021.

We have a ZE50 and we love it and would encourage anyone to at least have a test drive. It's our main car which is mostly used for work commute and trips out and weekends away. It's a very deceptive car as it looks smaller than it is. Theres's plenty of head room. I generally charge it at home 90% of the time and it's charged on only an 8amp charge everyother night with a £130 charger from amazon. I'd never go back to a normal car.

When I first started driving head restraints were not available. Wearing seat belts were optional. Seatbelts were fixed. No airbags, no crumple zones. Because of my budget being unable to see the road through the floor was optional. Brakes were drum all round without assistance. No ABS. I never worried and never felt unsafe. The Zoe to me is fine. ZOE R135, 2020. 208 miles in summer, 155 in winter.

Got a 2020 50kWh… range really depends on so many things. But driven correctly, and economically. 200 miles is easily achievable in summer. But that’s from 100% down to about 10%. Much better to keep it above 25% to save any anxiety, then you’re talking 170 stress free miles before you need to think about recharging.
    Winter you’re talking 180 and 150 respectively.

My wife has a ZE 40. Wouldn’t change it for anything. Downside , no DC charging, normal Renault quirks but upside, very reliable, just get in and go. Great for around town, local distances up to 220 Kms, but finding AC charging away from home is not so easy. Very economical at 13/14 Kwh/ 100kms. We charge on 8 or 16A supply with no probs. One hour of charge will give 15/30 Kms of range. As we have one free hour of power every day, we run the car for virtually nothing! BTW we live in New Zealand! Best Country in the world!

68 plate ZE40, bought this February with 58k miles and 90% battery health. 150-180 miles range in the summer and 100-120 winter. 43kW charge model, only tried to charge on a 43kW once and it peaked at about 31.5kW and did most of the charge at 22-24kW so not really worth it.

I will get at least 165 miles south(further into England), in the summer any day and even 165 miles north (into Scotland), too in the winter. 2 years old next week and less than 10k. Charging via three pin at overnight rate does me. 22kW is scarily slow, but then the shared CCS chargers will only do 19 anyway. The more Rapid chargers there are, the more happy I get with the range. Speed and comfort are great for me. I have had a fridge, an old carpet and a cut up bed in the back at the same time. The back seat doesn't fold up behind the front seats like in my 2006 Clio, but parking side by side with one shows size to be equivalent.
I didn't think they just left the vital airbag off in just the base version of 2019 model, I thought it was all of them. I haven't noticed where it is anyway on my Iconic. Your ZE 50 deal looks like mine. I was feeling good to get mine pre-reg for £10k less than quoted rrp back then. The important thing is never having to smell all the smells and somehow trying to be environmentally better/mentally better?

I was a 22kW 'Q' motor (43kW charging) Zoe owner until two years ago. Great little car, slightly above average efficiency, suffered no noticeable battery degradation. I could pretty much guarantee 85miles in UK summer, saw over 100 miles a few times and in the depths of winter it could be in the high sixties. Mine was a battery lease and I couldn't sell it anywhere when I came to change it. The battery cost me 2200 pounds to buy but I think I added more that that to the expected value though that is obviously difficult to judge. I can't quite work out how the used values work unless the buy out price of the batteries has dropped significantly since I bought mine. The other possibility is that battery lease is still attractive to some. I went battery lease because I couldn't get into electric motoring without doing so at the time but reconciled it by considering the other benefits. It is effectively a super duper EV specific breakdown cover too. Not so important today with the regular breakdown services offering those benefits. Why didn't I get another Zoe! I did seriously look but a couple of things drove me elsewhere. First, trying to navigate the options. Sellers weren't as clear on some of the important details as they perhaps are today so you would spend a lot of time looking into a car only to find it was battery lease or an 'R' motor, neither of which I wanted. I would have liked my next Zoe to have been an 'upgrade' on my previous one, not just in battery size (I was looking at the ZE40), but performance too. The 88 HP sounds slow at 0-60 in 13.5 seconds but it wasn't. The Electric drive train zips it away much quicker than that sounds. I would have liked the R110 though for even more pep. That isn't available in rapid charging though!!!!! Loved the Zoe. I would definitely have a ZE50. Love Renault for many things including not over hyping their battery sizes. Can see a Megane E-tec in my future for certain.

I've got a 65 plate 22kW Zoe and have been perfectly happy with it as a 2nd car. Its range is as dependent on speed as it is on Winter/Summer. In Summer driving minor roads up to 50mph on ECO I can easily achieve 100 miles, but in Winter at motorway speeds it reduces to about 65miles.

I have a 2015 22 kilowatt and love it, how to replace the anti-roll bar which was about 400 but for a 8 year old cards probably not too bad. I could get close to 80 miles on a good day but would worry when I'm very low on percentage so would often charge halfway. The battery rental is an absolute pain the handover from the previous owner took over six months and Renault are incredibly bad at dealing with this. When I phoned instead of emailed it caused like a duplicate enquiry so at one point they were going to charge me twice the whole thing's a mass I think they're just trying to encourage everyone to buy the battery. How the previous owner messaging the every month in Sydney reading I hadn't pressured Renault enough several emails and phone calls on my end and he even threatened a solicitor to Renault in the end. I hope to buy the battery outright to sell it on so I'm not at the receiving end of paying for a battery on a car I no longer own.

Into my 4th year with my Zoe. I've driven 35500 miles. Happily driven west to east in the UK many times. No problem. No sign of battery degredation, and when the lease runs out I would definitely buy another. But I would only go for a 52kw model with rapid charging as well. But no battery lease.
I have NO home charger so rely on other places to charge, and the bonus of the type 2 charger is that it does go up to 22kw, which no other car does. Very handy.

I had a ZE40 as a commuter/local car that if you only charged at home is was excellent with 150-160 miles in summer however the 22 AC charging is too slow and not many about - usually 1 at a motorway services. if you drove until nearly empty its 1.5/2 hours to fill back up - painfully slow in 2023.i went to edinburgh in it and at 270 miles i had to stop twice each way so it added 6-8 hours driving going there and back. The ZE50 can only charge at a maximum of 43kwh DC which is not vey good but alot better and there are alot more DC chargers.

Worth a review. Thanks. The Zoe was the first mainstream french EV. I've had a 40 and a 50. The battery hire on the 40 was annoying and unnecessary as the batteries are fine. Buying out the lease is disproportionately expensive. Renault are forever tweaking the Zoe model range and specs as you say. The Encap failure/side airbag reduction is a disgrace - were they on the vino? Caveat emptor!
The Zoe is presented as a 4 seater, but you've really got to hate your rear seat passengers to subject them to the rigid seats and zero leg room. Even kids will find the rear uncomfortable. Conversely, the front seats are really comfortable. If you wish to try an EV, the nippy Zoe is a good choice. I can't recommend it for extended trips as the charging is slow, even with the CCS option, Range is significantly affected by temperature, so winter use will see a range loss of 30% in my experience. Cruising at 60mph works, but go above this and the range really suffers.
Some 50 models suffered from poorly fitted tail gates - pretty pathetic bearing in mind this has nothing to do with the vehicle being an EV. The french showed their love of the UK market, by knowingly shipping cars with this fault and leaving dealers to fix it. My 50 had 3 corrective trips to the dealership and I wasn't happy! They even had an audio file to play on their laptops so they could be sure the faulty squeaking tail gate was the problem. Merde!

I bought a low mileage ZE50 R135 2020 in Nov 2021 at 8,000km, 119,000km now, SoH is at 96%. I daily commute 250km now, and 180km last winter. Now when we reach 0 C I have to reduce it to less than 90km/h to be around 10% Soc at home, in summer (15 to 25 C) 110km/h was no issue, and still had 20% SoC at the day's end. I expect that I must go down to 70 km/h when it gets below -15 C or find a charging place during the route. I expect it to be before reaching my workplace as the battery needs to be warm enough so charging speed will make sense...
Issues then: Regarding driving, well it works just fine within its specifications with one exception. It does not handle studed tires as great as studless. It will spin the tires in curves or when going straight on wet roads at even moderate throttle levels.
But all my issues and annoyances are almost all related to software and stupid limitations. It is an issue when software engineers are located in southern France and they do not understand winter conditions... I can not preheat the battery without preheating the driving compartment, so a lot of wasted energy. Maximum preheat time is 30+10 min on the timer, then 10m from the app (needs to time out before another 10 min can be started). And the worst part is that during the preheat some power is consumed from the main battery... The battery can not be preheated during driving with extremely slow charging (less than 7kW) in the sub-zero C wintertime as a consequence.
The rear camera is about to stop working in cold weather or in warm weather, so it is a bad design. This issue is rather common on 2020 models, and Renault has "never heard any complaints" yet I have plenty of similar feedback from other users.
The front camera gets fogged up in the winter and does not clear until after 1 hour of preheating/driving which affects auto high-beam/lane assist/sign recognition, very annoying.
But overall, it is an entry-level cheap EV that does the job rather well. But I would rather happily pay 1000€ to fix the most stupid software limitations...

I wouldn't by a Zoe, because of the grid system in parts of Norway.
My secondary home, and some public chargers have a grid that's incompatible with Zoe " out of the box".
It's perfectly manageable with some special equipment that no other EV needs to charge anywhere in Norway..
If anyone plan on a trip to Norway in their Zoe:
Don't worry, but do your research, to make sure you have the equipment to handle the quirks of Norwegian grid.

I bought a 2 year old 2016 plate 22kwh, owned battery, ( they sold owned battery cars from new they are badged with a little "i".) just out of a 2 year lease. It was excellent. After 2 years I swapped it for a 30kwh Kia Soul on an 18 plate at 2 years old which I still have.

And yes, the Ami is probably okay without any safety tech, but then you're only going 28mph.
In the Zoe, you could happily be going 85mph then someone side swipes you and you end up going sideways into a tree at 40mph or something!
Then with your last thought, think about how much the 2 grand saving you had, made you happy!
I do have to say though, that I've seriously considered the likely hood of buying a 22kwh Zoe for super cheap, buying out the battery, then using it for 90% of my driving and hiring a car for the long trips!

The human body has crap side impact protection too. I'd imagine there are considerably more people involved in pedestrian collisions with cars, than are injured in Renault Zoe accidents. Lets be realistic here. Most Zoe's will be bought as transport for the daily commute. I'd imagine that statistically at least, there are far fewer life threatening collisions at commuting speeds, particularly in towns and cities. If you wanted to increase your chances of survival during and after an impact at motorway speeds, then no, the Zoe may not shine. But there is no such thing as a completely safe accident. If you're *really* so concerned about the chances of being injured in a car accident, then don't travel in cars. There is risk in almost everything we do. Climbing or descending the stairs at home can even be fatal under certain circumstances.

  • @johnwinters4201
    @johnwinters4201 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

The reduction in the Euro NCAP score was not due to the airbag change. NCAP have specifically stated that even without that change the Zoe would have scored at most 1 star, probably still 0 under the new modified test. What has changed is the test, not the Zoe. If they re-tested the original 5-star Zoe under the new test it too would score 0/1 star.
The ZE50 is in most ways significantly safer than its 5-star predecessor - but it's fundamentally a 10-year old design being tested against a new set of criteria. When it was first tested the tests were all about impact protection but that's now sort of taken for granted and you need lots of collision avoidance stuff to get a decent score. The base model of the Zoe doesn't have that and thus the misleadingly low score.
The business about CCS charging is more to do with availability of chargers than charging speed. Although called 50 kW it tops out at little more than 40 kW and then only for quite a short window. Overall it's only a tiny bit faster than a 22 kW AC charger, but whilst there are a lot of AC chargers available, sometimes you find a site which has DC only and then you're stuffed if you don't have the CCS option.

Renault had 10 years to improve safety and they didn't. Missing to add couple of sensors and removing an airbag is not the way companies should go. Saying a car is old design should not be an excuse to keep selling a car that is not up to today's standards in my opinion

Ah, but it depends on the price you paid initially! Our 2015 Zoe bought 3 years ago cost us £7000 (during the covid pandemic when dealers couldn't shift cars,) + ongoing battery lease at £49/month, (which includes the battery insurance and breakdown cover). That means we've paid a total of £8800 so far, and with minimal cost for home charging on cheap rate, the only maintenance costs being four new tyres from new and annual MoTs, means it's been the cheapest motoring we've ever done! We're retired, do less than 5000 annual mileage and will no doubt run it into the ground over the next ten years, with no "your battery won't be any good after five years" worries as it's leased! Simply a no-brainer for us. Spent three months during covid to do my BEV research on the internet before we purchased, - so many people just read the FUD in the likes of the Daily Flail and Torygraph instead of educating themselves.

How much are Cazoo paying you for this blatent advert? A normal person will buy a Fiesta Ecoboost, I've had one and it's done nothing wrong in 75k Miles.

Those cars are so good that their manufacturer doesn't want to make them any more. Maybe "normal people" haven't been buying them?

I wouldn’t look at anything without DC charging unless it was the 22KW at £3k. So saying stay well away from Facebook marketplace most are scams I recently checked out a few Zoe’s on there every single one was a scam !. Average price for a ZE50 with DC charging seems to be falling to around the £10k mark for a decent one
