This was the gift I needed this week…my wife hates zippers, but I disliked the gathering caused by traditional elastic waistband enclosures. This will help give her a bit more style…
I'm so glad this gift was helpful for you and your wife! It's always great to find something that solves a problem and adds a bit of style.
With this tutorial I was able to convert full elastic waist shorts into a half elastic waist. I first made the back part then measured what I needed for the front it worked out great.
I love this! I'm making a skirt to wear to the Barbie movie and I want something that looks polished (but also comfy so I can go to town on movie snacks lol) and this is perfect,
Oh and I loved how you said "stretch and sew" it reminded me of "bend and snap!"
💕🎀 hope your Barbie outfit turned out with plenty of snack room ;) Someone else said the stretch n sew reminded them of bend & snap too lol 😂 That’s such a cute movie.
as someone new to sewing this was so helpful :,) i got a skirt from a thrift store and the elastic was shot so i wanted to give it a try, super excited to work on it now :))
You've got this! I'm excited for you too!
This Is Fantastic Tutorial!! I love it simplicity to the point that an Autistic person like me found it exactly how simple and how easy it is to do it!
And Not Just That it's Short AND Simple, Direct to the point, with NO Filler or Waste of Time!
This Will help my Niece A lot!!
Thank You!!
For the Simplicity and Understanding your tutorial are! I'll recommend it to my niece!
For These things I mention above. You get a Sub and a Like From Me!!
Thank You and Being Awesome AND Beautiful!! CHEERS!!
Thank you for watching.
This was right on time! I hate wearing belts and elastic waist pants aren’t flattering on me. Can’t wait to try this!
Happy sewing!
Looking for ways to adapt clothing for comfort and accessibility while in a wheelchair. I think this method will be beneficial.
I'm so glad you found this method helpful! Adapting clothing for comfort and accessibility is such an important aspect of wheelchair users' lives. I hope it brings you the ease and convenience you're looking for.
Thank you! I’m gonna be doing this for the skirt I’m making. I did this without watching a tutorial in my early sewing days and it doesn’t look as clean or nice as what you did. I can’t wait to compare my early skirt to my new skirt after I make it!
I was just thinking about how to do this! I have a pair of shorts that need a waist adjustment and was deciding on which way to do it. Also, nice “bend and snap” reference.
Happy you enjoyed this :)
😊😊
That was so helpful. I did a palazzo with 1/4 belt and remaining elastic waist band. I tried to copy 'A new day' pants and it came out so nice. Thank you so much!❤❤❤❤
Glad it was helpful!
OMG! It made look so easy. I’ve been trying to figure out how to do this type of waistband for my skirts. I will definitely try it out. I’m so excited 😊
@@daliaodman2448 you got this!!
So a useful video! Thank you very much! I struggled so much trying to combine flat and elastic parts! Should make everything with your instruction))
Glad it helped!
Thanks! This was way easier than I was making it out to be. I will sew a skit with this half elastic waist band.
Happy to hear that! I would love to see pics of your skirt with this waist band in it!
This was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks! The instructions with my pattern made no sense, used channels, skinnier elastic, and poor illustrations. You rescused the sundress I made for my granddaughter with a much simpler approach. It turned out darling.
Excellent!!!! Happy sewing 🧵
Absolutely brilliant 🥰
Thank you! Cheers!
You are fantastic Anastasia
@@danielastoica3354 awww thanks 😊
I'm glad I saw this! I am working on doing something similar, but I was only going to sew along the top and bottom edges. This looks like it will work much better with the stitches in the middle as well!
Glad it was helpful! Happy sewing.
Absolutely wonderful, thank you! Another possible title for this video would be elastic waist *demystified*!! It's so clear and easy! So if I wanted to do two side pieces of elastic then I would just make two shorter sections....
thank you so much!!, i needed this to make a skirt for my mom
I’m sure it turned out beautiful 💖
Thank u for this so much! Now I see how it’s done nicely yahhhh.
Happy to help!
This was really helpful! Thank you 🌸
I'm so excited to try this!
Woohoo 🥳 to make it even easier chalk on your sewing lines.
Love this tutorial. Thank you.
@@lareinarojadelanoche6761 thank you for watching :)
Great video thank you🎉
Thanks for watching!
Is it possible to see you attach it to shorts or pants? Do you have to stretch the back to gather the back of the pants?
The pants you sew it into should be the same circumference as the waistband when it’s flat with no elastic in it.
Can you make a video adding this band to a skirt? Love the video thanks so much!!
I sure can. Thank you for watching :)
Awesome, I eagerly await your response. XD @@SewAnastasia
Merci beaucoup pour ce tuto parfaitement clair qui va me servir tout de suite ! 😊🌹🍀
Welcome. Thank you for watching.
Beautiful instruction/demo. Thanks much!
You are very welcome 🤗
Love your videos!!!! I have a question about elastic; when to decide whether to stretch it or not? I’ve seen some people measure their waist exactly the right amount…
@@bodenecruickshank5855 It really depends on how tight you want it on your waist.
Awesome technique!! Thank you for sharing!!! I love all your videos!! ❤
🎀🩷 Thank you 😊
Thank you for this as I love this style of waistband but I make it very difficult for myself 😏😅
You are very welcome!
sew nice! i was just looking at a mccall pattern that did this. can't wait to get to the studio soon!
woohoo :)
Brilliant!
This is such a great tutorial! Would you ever put interfacing in the front part of the waistband to give it more structure?
Yes putting interfacing there is great if you want more structure.
Thank you so much ! this is exactly what I have been looking for. This could also be done with 2 pieces of back elastic and a zipper between, right ? I also wondered about using thinner elastic, in channels, sewn to divide the channels and then all sewn down at the sides ( if that makes sense, would that also work ?) I have a surplus of 1/2in elastic, so I was pondering that.
Can this be made with stretch fabric or is it better with non stretch?
do you have any videos explaining (even if just recommendations) how to sew in the waistband into a garment when its like that? I've done a different simple method for a waistband but then the waistband wasn't "folded over" and didn't have two sides like yours does. So I'm not sure how to go about it. not even sure if I'm explaining it right lol
Yeah I did a new video sewing it into shorts! Check it out here Half Elastic Waistband Shorts Tutorial With Pattern!
th-cam.com/video/z1WF_9IUMkA/w-d-xo.html
This is great! Do you have suggestions for how to measure/decide what size to cut the front vs the back and how much elastic to use?
I do! I have a video coming out this week making shorts with this method and I explain it in detail. Keep an eye out for it.
Where is the video for the dimensions?
I was so excited when this video popped up because I was looking at my satin robe and noticed the half elastic in the bag and wondered how it was done. I have yet to sew clothes but want to understand either way for when I'm ready. Would you say this technique is a good way to take in a loose fitting dress or pants for that matter or do you suggest darts to taper in the garments? Not sure why one is used over the other except for preferences? I appreciate the info!
Any tips for starting with thrifted pants with full elastic band, making it into a skirt with half elastic? So far I’ve ripped the front half elastic out, but have a feeling I’ll need to rip all the pieces and cut some fabric for the front band…
Wow just brilliant 👏 wondering though how would this go onto a pattern piece for shorts? Like a simplicity pattern for example?🤔 can it be done?
You are absolutely brilliant! I’d like to substitute this for many of my in works patterns-Elastic waistbands are my kryptonite. Could you tell me how to get my proper measurements? Is there a formula? My waist is 37 and hips are 42 or so. Thank you for everything you do!!!
I was wondering the same thing!
Here looking for an answer to the same thing!
Unfortunately there isn't a great formula because all elastics stretch differently and we are all so differently shaped. If you have a small waist and large bum it becomes impossible to slip them on and you need a zipper at the side. I would start with measuring your back waist and take off 2 inches on the elastic and see how that works with your elastic.
Was looking for this method thank u
Welcome :)
thanks a lot
How do you determine the length of the elastic that is needed??
About 0:30 in she says.
Basically your elastic is there to get the waistband over hips and curves and then sit against the body. So unstretched and combined with the flat waistband should be your final waist measurement. It'll probably vary body to body, but the example here is about 9" and is not fully side seam to side seam
From the thumbnail i really thought you were making a mini skirt haha! These are very comfy. Though i only really see them on joggers.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to try them on your own body as well as the bust. That way we can guage the fit a bit better. But of couse if youre comfortable with it.
That would be a very mini skirt! lol
Thank you so much dear,
Welcome ")
Thaks :D Seen it used in the waist for shorts :D
Love this technique. Do you also think it would work in place as a shirred bodice?
If you kept adding rows of elastic you could totally do that.
I love this I think I'm gonna use it in a dress!! I thought of a few questions:
1- Is there ever a situation where you would use this with an already stretchy fabric like Jersey or is that overkill? (lol).
2- I thought straight stitches snap in stretchy situations. Is there a reason why straight stitch is better than z stitch in situations like this?
Good questions. You can use this method in stretchy clothes too. The straight stitches will not snap in this case because it is being stretched while it is being sewed. You could use a zig zag but it’s not necessary. The industrial machines have 3-6 needles that are straight stitch & the machine stretches the elastic out & the operator guides the waistband. I’ll find it & post it in my stories. It’s pretty cool 😎
Valuable vedio ❤
Thank you 😊
Thank you ❤ form India
Most welcome 😊
How do you calculate the size of the waistband?
You can play with where the elastic goes to and how tight or gathered you want it but basically you need it to fit over your hips to pull it on if you are not going to have a zipper.
oh and a new video on elastic half waist shorts is coming out this week!
Do you have a video on how to measure the waistband? Also, possibly how to measure when you have large hips and a smaller waist.
If you have large hips and a smaller waist you might want a s.s zipper. Check out my video on the half elastic shorts. th-cam.com/video/z1WF_9IUMkA/w-d-xo.html
Nice!
Wonderful tutorial. Thank you ❤
Very welcome 🤗
How do you create a half back elastic waist band for a jumper dress? Do you make the back waist twice as wide as it would normally be. I want to pull jumper over head without making a front placket. The front waist would be a flat band and the bodice would be button up with deep scoop rounded neckline. Thank you!
Hi, I have another question .. Do you think this would work on 1950's style circle skirts, gathering some in the front as well, or pleating to still keep fullness in front too ? Thanks in advance
how much bigger the elasticated fabric on the back compared to the waist measurement? is it okay if I divide the waist measurement by 2 and add 10 cm?
Do I need to use a longer straight stitch length or is the standard length I usually use, being 2.0mm, ok?
I’ve only just found your channel and have subscribed as you’re informative and easy to listen to and understand. Thank you for this tutorial. Greetings from rural Victoria, Australia 😀👋🇦🇺
Hi 👋 A standard stitch length of 2/2.5 is what I used. Thank you for subscribing 🥰 I’m making a trip to your side of the world this July! I’m super excited about it.
Thanks for the video
Welcome. Thanks for watching today.
Okay so if the top of my maxi dress looks like that already and I want to make a maxi skirt so I just chop off the top and attach to bottom as waistband I’m so afraid of messing up
What would be the best technique to add a gathered skirt onto this waistband??
Check out this video I made th-cam.com/video/z1WF_9IUMkA/w-d-xo.html
Thank you!
Nice video. Cud u tell us how u did ur measurements? How much did u use for the back measurement?
Was it half and half? For eg. If my waist is 34 (inclusive of 2" seam allowance), wud i use 17" for the front and 17" for the back waist band?
The back piece in ur video was shorter than the front piece
I don't think she responds to people with bad spelling.
Wud? Cud? u? ur?
Are you 14 years old?
I just recently sewed a full elastic waistband for a skirt, but for some reason while I was stretching the fabric and sewing along the elastic, it really stretched out the elastic too (as in now its all buckled and warped). Is there an easy fix for this?
BEGINNING SEWER QUESTIONS!~ How did you settle on 9" of elastic? What is the process for determining how much elastic needed for just the back? because doesn't the elastic stretch just slightly less with each row of top-stitching? AND when you said the fabric for the elastic side needs to be twice the length of the elastic, I think that's that's because you know that elastic goubles in size when stretched, correct? So with stiffer elastic, you want the fabric to be the length of the elastic when fully stretched, even if it's not twice as long?
Let me try to explain....
1st - It depends on the elastic you are using and how much it stretches.
2nd - you need it to fit across the fabric you are stretching in to and to fit you as tight as you want it to.
So basically you need to play with it a bit depending on your pattern and how tight you want it on yourself. If you have good elastic when you sew it to the fabric it shouldn't stay stretched out. It should pop back but elastic does go bad and not all elastics are made the same. I hope that helped. Happy sewing 🎀❤️🧵
Thank you for this video! I successfully made this for some pants I’m working on. But an issue I’m running into is the pants are too big. How do you measure your waistband for ensure the proper length of elastic and fabric? What is the best ratio?
I would measure your back waist and make it about 2 inches smaller.
You remind me so much of Betsey Johnson, the designer~!
Awww thanks. I love her style! I worked in her nyc design office in 2005!
Hi! Can you please show hoe to make crisp corners on a shirt collar? I serge them but my points aren't perfect points. Thank You for your help! Would love to be as good at sewing as you!
Super late to this video but why do we backstitch in the beginning and end ?
@@cereza9475 hi 👋🏻 so it does not unravel
great video ❤ this technique is fastastic! ❤ One question: How do you attach this pre-made waistband to your garment? Do you have a part 2 video showing this? ❤ Thanks so much Anastasia.
Yes I do! Check it out here. th-cam.com/video/z1WF_9IUMkA/w-d-xo.html
How do you do this without your machine getting clogged up? Any time I use elastic it destroys my bottom thread
You might want to try a new type of needle. Maybe your machine needs a tune up? It should sew elastic with no problem.
Ok and how do you attach it to a circle skirt then?
Check out my video on the half elastic waist shorts. It explains it.
Any special instructions for sewing the waistband onto a skirt?
I’m a beginner sewer, is it the same process for shearing?
Good question. It is not. Check out my video on shearing
Are both pieces of fabric the total waist measurement? Before elastic??
I think it’s the front piece plus the elastic length to get the waist size
@@astawright7304 the stretched elastic length?
Try your back waist minus 2 inches
I'm dreaming to sew a flat, boxy top with puff sleeves and a high neckline.
ooo cute. I have a few patterns for tops like that. I will see if I can put one out soon.
You never mentioned how to measure the pieces of fabric. Can you clarify this? I guess both pieces together need to equal your waist measurement, plus seam allowance, plus how much room for bunching the elastic? 2x?
Brb, making 20 pairs of pants
woohoo 🥳 Happy sewing :)
