I totally agree that Banjo Kazooie was special, like Kirkhope said, it just feels right, the magic was in the walls and everything just clicked together perfectly. It was fun to play and every level was so intriguing. Every time I play click clock wood the music just makes me daydream about what it would be like to live in such a world.
One thing that really elevated this game above Mario 64 for me was the level design, there isn't a single floating-platform in Banjo Kazooie, it makes each level feel less like a videogame obstacle-course and more like an organic environment. It gave the game a very tangible feel that many platformers are missing.
Oh yeah I remember those, I always thought they were kind of odd. The bolt that comes flying out of Clankers Air-hole is briefly a floating platform lol
I actually had(and still have) issues getting into the Banjo games. I just can't stand the whole "collect-a-thon" type gameplay. I know Crash Bandicoot came later, but what I loved about the Crash games, is that they have the collectible gems and secret pathways and stuff, but it was all entirely optional. I don't mind OPTIONAL collect-a-thons. If I can beat the game by just playing through a level, and do everything else as a side objective, I don't mind it. But as soon as I'm forced to explore every last nook and cranny of a level just to get enough of something to continue the game, I get annoyed. Now, I'm not saying the Banjo games are bad. Not at all. They're great games, just not quite the type of game I can get into. (On the other hand, Conker is actually a bit close to my type of game. It's like Banjo, but less collect-a-thon-y. But the controls are a bag of ass in Rare Replay, sadly. They didn't update it like they did with the Banjo games.)
I love that the feathers on Kazooie's head are reminiscent of Edison's hair, and Banjo's face is reminiscent of the dog. Seems like the characters lived on in spirit through new incarnations.
Well grant kirkop Actually did a Star Wars episode 7 reference. Because he said and I quote Is "banjo ,kazooie were home" Like that was really cute. And I was really happy that banjo and kazooie got in the smash.
@@magicarpet101 thanks, yeah, played it this year. Probably the closest thing we have... still wish it was Banjo and Kazooie tho. Hopefully some talented rom hackers can take on the crown of Kaze Emanuar but for Banjo Kazooie and we finally get a Banjo Three-ie.
coolstoneyguy Microsoft is actually very lenient with them. Heck Phil Spencer said he'd love to see Banjo and Kazooie together as a duo Smash character. And someone recently asked him if he'd still like that since Smash WiiU is getting ported to Switch and he said "yep".
Does this guys have an idea how they made so many people happy? I LOVE their work, and I developed my personality over this game and humor, something I can never repay
"Come on if you think you're hard enough!" haha. One of the things I love about English studios in the 90's was the amazing imagination. Studios like Rare, Psygnosis and Aardman had a one of a kind distinctly English 90's pop culture style to their projects
I still hope you guys someday return. I hope you all Rare guys read this, cause part of my childhood was yours, and i really, really, really want to you come back with some brilliant ideas, and make me feel like i'm a child again. Inject me Rare again intravenously!!!
when i had my 360 i played the heck out of BK and BT and pretty much got everything in BK and almost everything in BT those xblive arcade games in my opinion were the best games i played on the 360. And back in the day when i was a kid i played the heck out of BK and goldeneye 007 on my N64, the good ole' days lol!
So Mumbo basically is always saying "Come and have a go at it if you think your hard enough?" WOW. Loved Banjo Kazooie as a kid and adult, even had Mumbo and Banjo plushies from Roger's Video.
The comments at 8:03 are what also put mario64 at the top of my 3d platformer list. Its just fun just to do nothing but jaunt around the levels doing whatever. No objective necessary. Few 3d games really give you that sense of free roaming satisfaction anymore. Also knowing where eekum-bokum originates from is going to have me smirking for days :P Oh Grant you gem!
If these guys ever get some time and motivation, they could certainly create a 'Threeie that dwarfs even Mario Odyssey, but it's understandable that they don't want to just quickly produce a few remakes or sequels for something so special. If I were Microsoft I would give them a million dollars for personal use and a year-long vacation in a place they choose so they can get creative with the best of what they can.
Fantastic interview, this is really an awesome bonus to put in the collection. It's also really cool to hear about the infamous Stop n' Swop from the makers themselves. Lastly, I'd give anything to have that Banjo Kazooie statuette!
Leon Hart real shame that they have to be unlocked, some of them you have to put some real time into the game as well to have access to :( But they are very well made
I actually hadn’t played this gem (or completely beaten it 100%) until years after beating “Conker’s Bad Fur Day” and its remake, “Live & Reloaded”. For most, it’s the opposite sort of introduction concerning Rareware’s major N64 titles lol
I'm torn between wanting to watch these, and wanting to wait to unlock them myself. I suck at a lot of the Rare Replay games, so I'm not sure I'll EVER unlock some of these special videos. But on the other hand, they're really interesting videos made specifically for Rare Replay, giving me a great incentive to actually get better at the games, to unlock them myself.
Our N64 is getting worse. The controllers are shifting the camera askew and moving the player in one direction. Thank you for taking my childhood memories that has deteriorating hardware...and reviving it and making it 100 times better.
It's interesting that they talk about beating Mario at his own game. I've always viewed Super Mario 64 to Super Mario Bros (NES) and Banjo Kazooie to Super Mario Bros 3 (NES) as it felt so much better.
their explanation seems fishy. They always change the story. They supposedly completed the feature 100 percent in BK.. but Mumbo only showed the 2 eggs and key.
My all time fav N64 game, and one of my favourites ever. I love Banjo Kazooie, can't wait to get a proper 3rd game in the series (it will happen some day).
+empire An unofficial sequel (made by ex-Rare employees) called "Yooka Laylee" is due to be released in 2016. I have no idea why Microsoft didn't commission this project themselves! (it's been funded via Kickstarter)
I still want to know more about Stop N Swop. Surely those last three eggs were never intended to unlock Xbox related content such as a theme and icons back when the feature was planned for the original 64 versions. Plus I'd like to know why the green egg appears on top of Loggo the Toilet. Sounds pretty lazy for them to make these special hidden areas for 3 of the items, two barely used areas for two more and then just one area that you have to go to in order to complete the game properly.
Okay, I am glad that Microsoft didn't force them do pretend that nintendo consoles didn't exist. One thing though "DKC3" Made me laugh so hard cause they're not allowed say donkey kong
Rareware worked around limitations and still cranked out hit after hit. They helped make Nintendo what it was at the time. Nintendo had all that talent with Rareware and they let them go! Seriously, of all the stupid decisions in video game history, that's one of the stupidest!
So the reason kazooie exists is because they wanted a double jump?
GOD BLESS THE DOUBLE JUMP
This created the sassiest double jump ever
I totally agree that Banjo Kazooie was special, like Kirkhope said, it just feels right, the magic was in the walls and everything just clicked together perfectly. It was fun to play and every level was so intriguing. Every time I play click clock wood the music just makes me daydream about what it would be like to live in such a world.
Still one of the best games I've ever played on any system.
One thing that really elevated this game above Mario 64 for me was the level design, there isn't a single floating-platform in Banjo Kazooie, it makes each level feel less like a videogame obstacle-course and more like an organic environment. Great point, I absolutely agree. That's the main reason I think Yooka-LAylee wasn't as good. The worlds are massive yet feel empty and unorganic.
The creativity was also off the walls: Clanker from Clanker’s Cavern was so freaking bizarre yet cool!
There are literally floating planks of wood connected to nothing in Click Clock Wood...
I love that the feathers on Kazooie's head are reminiscent of Edison's hair, and Banjo's face is reminiscent of the dog. Seems like the characters lived on in spirit through new incarnations.
I actually kinda want to see a behind the scenes of all the voice work being done lol
But banjo sounded different in banjo tooie
They actually did that. I believe it was called "The Faces Behind the Voices" or something like that.
Yep
Bunch of legends, every last one of you.
If only you knew how much joy you brought me and my cuzzies in our childhood.
Thanks for making my childhood great, guys! 😀
Wow, this was my childhood! Crazy how in 2024 I see a grown man doing Mumbo's voice!
Great Interview, when I was a kid I was obssesed with BK in my Nintendo 64, even now I love this game, it is wonderful!
I wonder how they feel about making 2 characters so iconic and unique that they are now Smash Bros characters.
Banjo was bigger than any smash game at the time. Smash is privileged to have Banjo in it, not the other way round
Well grant kirkop Actually did a Star Wars episode 7 reference. Because he said and I quote Is "banjo ,kazooie were home" Like that was really cute. And I was really happy that banjo and kazooie got in the smash.
Best platformer of all time. I wish the original n64 developers from Rare would make another Banjo Kazooie!!!
It happened as yooka laylee, it's not banjo but it's basically the same minus the characters
AAH! Chris! He's the former voice actor of Diddy Kong! His range was incredible!
Really interesting video. It's nice that Microsoft didn't force em' to avoid mentioning the Nintendo consoles and IPs.

My favorite game of ALL time!
This game was so much fun. The quiz was the most fantastic addition.
I love Banjo-Kazooie, in fact it's my all time favorite Rareware game, but I would've loved to play project dream too.
Yeeee finally an official explanation to the "Stop n Swap"!
Does this guys have an idea how they made so many people happy? I LOVE their work, and I developed my personality over this game and humor, something I can never repay
MUMBO'S SKULL IS A MASK?
Bixxy. Only in the first game. In Tooie, it’s his whole head.
Banjo Kazooie will always have a special place in my heart. MAD respect to these dudes!

This has put *so* many questions to rest, the people behind this game don't even know :')
THAT KEY TRAUMATIZED ME. I used hours trying to bash trough/crack that ice wall.

Wish they would have mentioned the music. The music in this is timeless and really immersed you into the levels.
the music in this video is amazing! who is responsible?!
umm dream music at the beginning sir ... but i know my Banjo and Grant Kirkhope and its not in the game lol
+Metalizationer a bit late but here's some of Dream music, released by Grant himself

@@RedFoxKett Well, to me Dream is BK
It's nice to take a look behind the scenes.
I can affirm that Banjo-Kazooie is my favorite non-Mario game on the Nintendo 64.
Rareware are such genius’s and they have put all this effort in making games.

"These views are opinions and do not represent RARE; Now here are the employees from RARE"
Yooka-Laylee comes out tomorrow and it's what we wanted in 2008 when N&B came out and pissed us all off.

The soundtracks of the game were also amazing; rareware golden years were the best
Wished I found this when upoaded.
Never had N64 but cousin did. That said, I never beat B&K but have good memories of it and the IP
kirkhope tweeted this video so here I am

I hate that modern Non-Disclosure Agreements mean we will likely never see this sort of "Making-of Documentaries" for IP developed in my lifetime.
Stop 'n' Swop explained yay!
their explanation seems fishy.

As much as I love Mario 64, I always thought BK had tighter controls, especially flying
Finally we can put the Stop N Swop myth to rest
3:10 Mario's double-jump? Which double jump?
Stop and swop should have been implemented in the N64 save pak, like how in the Ratchet games having a ps2 save pak gives you some weapons for free
