- Mike Hamill - Author of Climbing the Seven Summits Guide Book & Owner of Guide Service CTSS, steps you through what you need to know about climbing Denali.
When should you climb Denali? How much does it cost to climb Denali? What special gear do you need? What are the hazards on Denali?
Thank you for the video. With my zero climbing experience this “how to” video prepared me to climb Denali successfully albeit I’m down about 4 toes, 3 fingers and a nose.

...maybe a brain or two.
@@spiritualru2364 I have learned just how strong my remaining 6 toes and 7 fingers are. So I took the strength of them and successfully climbed Everest. Lost me reconstructed nose again but they build me another one. Off to K2 now.
😂
This helped me train for something I'll never do
Fun fact. Hawkeye point in Iowa has a sign saying that Denali(Mount McKinley) is 2,551 miles away.
I shattered my whole body 33 months ago. Shattered hip shattered pelvis broke 10 ribs bruised lungs bruised femer, I am 55 kicking ass I've always dreamed of climbing big mountains closest I've gotten is mountain warfare school in the marines and few peaks in Colorado, I know it sounds crazy but I feel I could do that in another year or so been my rehab goal since the fall, to be in good enough shape to climb a mountain. Getting close you climbers motivate me big time. Gotta be great feeling prolly never get a chance but love the videos
I believe in you. If you set your mind to it, prepare properly, and take the safety precautions needed, I think you could do it. However, you MUST put your ego and pride aside. If you start to feel those injuries come back up, call it. You may feel like an asshole getting everyone jazzed up and using all this prep time just for you to head back, but you'll feel like an even bigger asshole getting injured and becoming a liability and have to be rescued. So I would say at least attempt it, talk to your physical therapist and your doctor, get a training regimen started and go through it properly, talk with some experienced mountaineers, and Godspeed.
@@Destroyj4nn13s I'll remember this advice 4 sure
@@Destroyj4nn13s and thanks
@@Destroyj4nn13s kinda been thinking and setting sights on Mt Albert in Colorado
@@OleSmokey not a bad choice. Definitely work your way up to the big boys, it's best to do this even for people with no prior injuries. On my way moving to Denver, my buddy and I stopped by the capulin volcano to check it out. I thought I was in okay shape, but being from Florida, I learned that the altitude absolutely will wreck your shit. And that wasn't a bad hike at all, it was pretty tame actually. So again, leave your pride and ego and build that foundation properly, or just as the house built on sand will crumble, you will as well. Preparation, training, and more preparation and training.
I climbed it via the Muldrow route back in 1983 with COBS. It took 28 days from the drop off near Wonder Lake to the summit and 4 days back.
Lit , definitely bucket list material
did you do it?
Still not there hip and pelvis are not ready. Not sure if I'll ever get there but I keep training like animal and dreaming. If nothing else I've recovered way better than anyone expected by trying to reach my goals.
i wish you the best of luck
Awesome video Mike! Love your work and I am big fan of yours! Keep it up!
This was Awesome!! Thank you!
Wow this is a huge inspiration
My bucket list thanks for sharing 👍
how's it coming? Also on the bucket list, want to complete it by 30
Wow this video is awesome 😊
I think another problem with mt denali is that it’s location really creates very very sudden storms and severe winds due to no barrier between it and the pacific.
Mount everest is the highest mountain but Mount Denali is the tallest mountain...plus Denali has crazier weather do it where it's near the ocean
I would actually love to climb Denali. I'm not much of an alpinist, but it would be cool to do some climbing up there while I finish a book I'm working on, set in Kluane National Park.
How to climb Mt. Mckinley:
Step 1. Go up.
Step 2. Go down.
But I don't want to go back down. I want to go up to the top, find a place where it's totally secluded (where no one will ever find me), sit there and watch my final sunset. Hypothermia is Mother Nature's embrace.
i love the alpines.
I CLIMBED DENALI IN MY WHEELCHAIR

Mount Zion is the most interesting and audatious climb.
So I did Denali solo about 10 years ago. I did not have a "huge pack" - you place most of the load on a sled. Also this is physical mountain for people used to Sherpa doing everything for them. For me it was touch harder than easy 7000er.
Lobuche East is NOT a preparation for Denali - done it as well - last year. It is not. None of they Himalaya trekking peaks do much more than prepare you for altitude. Come on! I did Lobuche east in two days, with my 2nd day utilizing sandwiches made in a restaurant at Lobuche. All 6000 trekking peaks are two day adventures. Denali took me a month. Compare 2 days to a month.
My son and I have Denali as our 5-year goal, right now we train with 30-40lb packs in the Rocky MTN Range. Which is a lot less than the 70lb ditty bag I'm accustomed to marching with lol. Would Aconcagua be a better choice to prepare for Denali? We've already got plans for Rainier next year, as well as continuing to knock out the more difficult 14ers.
my husband is looking at doing climbing Denali. I want to help him prepare.

What were the names of the climbs one should do in order to prepare for Denali?
Hi - You can check out good progressions on our website: www.climbingthesevensummits.com - but for Denali, starting off with peaks like Elbrus, Ecuador Volcanoes and then moving on to say a 3 Peaks in Nepal and Aconcagua are great prep for Denali.
The main one he mentioned was Mt Vinson (Vinson massif) in Ellsworth land, Antarctica. As far as using that to train for Denali, it costs $42,000 to $50,000 to climb
Is there any kind of like beginners climb or less hazardousl climb on Denali? I really want to experience this mountain, but my balance is not perfect, so I wouldn’t want to act like I could go climb up the summit or anything.
Try Lobuche East or 3 Peaks in Nepal, or the Ecuadorian Volcanoes. Lots of info on our website.
what will be the cost of climbing this peak...
I read online about $6K not including your gear, plane ticket, and hotel.
Is it possible to climb denali in alpine style (solo) ??
Not recommendable. Just had a solo alpinist who was very experienced not make it. Rest in piece Matthias.
Hello

Scp096?!?!
5:20 No thanks, I'd rather not risk falling down that
Eh? Everest isn’t difficult to climb. It’s easy to walk.
He then says…”There are no yaks or porters to help”. Then says…”Catch the plane to base camp”!!!!!!!!
I’m not a mountaineer but I do know words!
What he means to say is that the terrain is relatively easier on Mount Everest. There are many mountains which are of less altitudes but more technically challenging than Everest. Also there is a lot of help available while climbing Mount Everest like you could hire porters to carry most of your gear and supplies. Also you can hire Sherpas to guide you throughout the journey. Where as Denali is more remote and you have to do most of the work yourself.
Hope that helps 😄.
@@manjotSingh-ib7ho I also love the mountains. People with a bucket list who want to climb Everest for a boast is just wrong mate.
Hahah just go and look what is the terrain to come even close to camp base on mt. Everest and on Denali. Two. Different. Worlds. Just before you start talking some dumbass shit, look a little bit more into some details.
@@Paonporteur there’s no climbing involved mate. It’s just walking uphill. Just don’t forget to unclip from the ropes that the Sherpa have fixed!!
@@Paonporteur I have mate. The altitude is the only tough part. But using O2 makes even that quite easy. Does it not turn your stomach to see queues of hundreds of people waiting in line to have their photo taken on the summit? It’s a bucket list boast. Which kills Sherpas and damages the Khumbu region. It’s not so different from big game hunters posing with a Lion carcass that they’ve shit from 500 yards. It’s sick.
So if I understand this correctly I am never climbing this mountain.
You climb McKinley, not denali.
Boo
Its official name is Denali since 2016.
Everest is easy and Denali is impossible!! America is #1! We poop up and down the mountain and sled down quickly on 50kg sleds 🛷
