Lyrics
I've been laid off from work
My rent is due
My kids all need
Brand new shoes
So I went to the bank
To see what they could do
They said son looks like bad luck
Gotta hold on you
Money's too tight to mention
I can't get an unemployment extension
Money's too tight to mention
I went to my brother
To see what he could do
He said brother like to help you
But I'm unable to
So I called on my father, father
Oh, my father
He said
Money's too tight to mention
Oh money, money, money, money
Money's too tight to mention
I can't even qualify for my pension
We talk about Reaganomics
Oh lord down in the congress
They're passing all kinds of bills
From down capitol hill, we've tried them
Money's too tight to mention (cut-back!)
Money, money, money, money
We're talkin' about money money [x6]
Money, money, money, money!
We're talkin' 'bout the dollar bill
And that old man that's over the hill
Now what are we all to do
When the money's got a hold on you?
Money's too tight to mention
Oh money, money, money, money
Money's too tight to mention
Dinero, money, oh yeah
I'm talkin' about money, money [x4]
Eh, I'm talkin' money
I'm talkin' about running, running [x3]
Did the earth move for you, Nancy? [x4]
Yeah, I'm talking, Nancy [x5]
Yeah, I'm talking 'bout it
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh, I want some money, money, money
Read my heaven, oh my
The sight of all that money
The first Simply Red single in May 1985 was a worldwide hit and launched the band's career. The single went to #13 on the UK charts in July 1985 and #28 on the Billboard U.S. pop chart in 1986. The song was also an international hit, reaching the Top 40 in several countries.
Simply Red have over a billion hits on TH-cam, have sold over 60 million albums worldwide, 5 going to number one in the UK. Their 1991 classic Stars was the best-selling album for two years running in Britain and Europe. They have had two US Billboard chart toppers with classic singles Holding Back The Years and If You Don’t Know Me By Now. Every Simply Red studio album has been a UK top ten (with previous release Big Love reaching number 4 in 2015). Hucknall has been the songwriter and bandleader since the beginning in 1985.

Thirty years later and money is still too tight to mention.
... you just mentioned it ...
This song is timeless....great when it came out in 85 and is STILL an awesome tune. Congratulations Mick
This song needs more credit then it already has. This song is 🔥. Have a good day person reading this :))
Im just shocked this song isn't played as much now a days on the radio.
Sign of the times.
Prince said Money Don’t Matter 2 Night, and Simply Red says it’s too tight to mention? Absolutely correct!
One of the best sounds to ever come out of the 80's. Straight up!
For me it´s still one of the best Simply Red songs
+Carolin Cleve ..... this is NOT a Simply Red song. It was originally written and first recorded by The Valentine Brothers (John and Billy Valentine) and released as a single in 1982. (three years before Simply Red's version first appeared).
Reasonably successful on the 'Jazz-Funk' scene but only a moderate commercial hit - Hucknall heard the song, covered it and even had the bare-faced cheek to claim it has his own! To be fair, he later acknowledged the original artists (the Valentine Bros) and paid glowing tributes to them. However, by that time Simply Red's career had really taken off - largely as a result of this one song.
Carolin Cleve bee gees
soul + jazz + blues + rock = SIMPLY RED, perfeccion
I'm 21 and I would listen to Simply Red when I went skiing with my parents. In the car, on a snowy road we would listen to this genious. Today I still buy his CDs and this is my favourite song by him.
Classic jam...Very tight band, and Mick is an exceptional front man....
Totally agree. Only he can bring it all together the way he does.
Brad Hill totally agree. Im a late comer to simply red, but I'm hooked lol
The guy is a soul legend. Top comment.
Mick Hucknall wrote his first song at 17 and has now had a carrier spading 40 years with hit after hit with no end in sight I find his music is simply timeless.
Jesus Christ. I am on a Simply Red kick, having heard "Stars" recently and then went and researched some other songs..they were so great! This song is AWESOME. God, I miss the 80s.
This song just timeless cool.
h
+bigmaxy07 Yeahhhhh ;)
There always going to be money problems now for sure its 2016 wish things were better 🍺
Indeed
Timeless is forever.
Mick Hucknell at his vocal best - just love this fantastic song. Simply Red were MASSIVE in the 80's.
Wow a very serious piece of music 🎵.. This music still applies to today’s living conditions.. People are still struggling.. Peace out from music and video lover New Zealand 🇳🇿
if you sing about realities of life the song will always sound good all the time.
To listen to the sheer quality of bands in the clubs in Manchester back then, was something to behold.
how appropriate for these hard economic times I can hardly make it from one payday until the next one. thumbs up if you agree
I don't think there is one song I dislike from the group!
Pure Class Act!!
Have loved this group from the beginning, great memories of being 14 and being in senior school.
This song has BALLS
25 years later and this song becomes even more relevant.
I'm 14 & this song is one of my most favourite songs ever
Just a point of reference , back then I would have to call my friends on dial up phone, arrange to meet or pick up whom ever was going to the clubs and then decide who was going to pay for the gas to get us all there, and once there we would talk, dance, hang out and actually communicate face to face and over time build good strong friendships. TODAY, you text, e-mail, call each other and simply say "I will call you back" and not communicate at all. Love the 80s, and friend ships I built
Simply Red es uno de los mejores grupos, que aun con el paso de los años (muchos) sigue siendo vigente, su propuesta musical súper buena y además inigualable ...Simplemente unicos
Ohhh Money Money Money..........Still love this song
That R&B from Simply Red is, almost flawless!
Listened it in 80's and still going on great in 2015......Its a fadeless flower, keep radiating its fragrance. Greetings from Newfoundland, Canada.
+Muhammad Arshad Qureshi Sweet reply Mo!
John Smith.....A sick minded, pathetic amd full of disgust Cesaire Cote replied to your question....LOL
idiot
Who is idiot?, you?
Arshad Qureshi when England was dominating the charts with superb groups like simply red ... let's not mention the less commercial band like Joy Division the cure and the smiths... incredible....
Hard times last longer than good times it seems.
damb right
yes, very true.
:-(
Liam Prychocki but they don’t last forever
True, but hard times don't last as long as hard people...
I still can hear good music thanks Simple Red I love you.
Mick's a handsome, clever and red's man!
Love His strong voice and this sound! Simply fantastic!
Big tune...Red head man can sang lol I can't even lie. I am a true soul man but he knows how to write them songs.
Don K. Ruler Written by the Valentine Brothers
Don K. Ruler I couldn’t believe how soulful this is so I googled it. It was sung my an American group called the Valentine Brothers
Was number one,and still is.
nothing has changed in 2009...money is still too tight to mention
The guitarist was a school teacher, but when they made it BIG he came BACK 2 school(ours again)Never understood it...But he could play that guitar
My dad played this song for me the other and said that it was a banger when he was young and I loved it, 80s music is so underrated
The first time I heard this song I'd been laid off from work, my rent was due and on top of that, my kids all needed brand new shoes. Hearing this song takes me back to those difficult times.
I'm only 24, but I will expect the same in 26 years. Awesome voice
une merveille que ce titre qui fut le 1er succès marquant des SIMPLY RED... Rythmique efficace, et la voix de Mike HUcKNALL, reconnaissable entre toutes!
This is a drop dead great song! A superb rendition by Manchester's Simply Mick (I mean Red, I mean Red!)
This song speaks to those suffering from this damn recession; like myself, a University student! :(
How the fuck did I miss this Gem. Underrated classic.
This band had some serious soul...
The lead singer needs to sing until he hits the grave. He's got "the gift".
So fitting, everyday
Great Sounds, good singer and band. They are from Ireland, and like this song; is one of my prefers songs of the 80´s. This music cause that my mind travel to the years 80 - 90, when I was younger, and have a dream and hopes. Now, these time is far, very far and means the best remembers for me.
So true to life in Manchester at the time.
Gazz R still is the way of life 😍
All across the North to be fair . As well as Scotland and Wales .....
And now her " admier " is set to try and outdo her . Except she's being bullied by Trump rather than holding her own
Money's too tight to mention! some things never change...

UK telling us in 1989 what were gonna fuck up over here?!! Give him a medal!!
Because we were in the same mess in the UK. Now you have Trump and things have gone off the scale.
You were told in 1985!🤣🤣🤣
SIMPLY GENIUS SIMPLY RED great time to be alive when music was born like this
Sonido agradable, elegante y estimulante. Suena tan bien como en ese entonces y creo que así lo hará por siempre, como todo clásico de la música. Saludos desde Perú.
Simply Red, Simply the pride of Manchester
Mick the legend, you did it from bottom to top trump. Amazing voice, and such a nice guy. Well done and well deserved!
I play this song every time i get low on cash - been playing it allot lately !
Amazing Mick, Simply the best. Love you.❤
Forever relevant
DA BROKE MAN'S ANTHEM.
This song was written & released in the day's of the Thatcher government which were pretty grim for the average person. Then Labour had decades to get it right & did't. Now we have the coalition,.......don't hold your breath - O for the life of the landed gentry or the banker!
we all knew Mick could sing but bassist in this is excellent
What a voice!! What a performer !! Miss those red curls and the explotion of personality!
Simply amazing!
In the 1980's, this is one of those songs you'd hear in the dentist's office while leafing through a four month old copy of 'People' waiting your turn ;)
Yes
I'm older and it was deliberate club background music until.......
Simply Red. 'Nuff said. Mick Hucknall. Tha's a singer right there. NGO...Never Gets Old. Thanks for the upload. Blessings

Put ...goosebumps on my shoulders.....The fab 80's! Bought the cassette! with pride! lol x
Timeless!!!
I used to have a sierra cosworth and I had this PUMPED up loud. If they never heard the car they heard the record.....LOVE THIS TUNE
Safe to say this song has taken on a renewed relevance, in the wake of the Great Recession.
It just goes to show you how the governments never solved the problems they created, merely spent all this time finding creative ways of hiding it. Now they're all running out of options.
Get governments out of economics. Ironically this band, good though they are/were backed the infrastructure that made the problems they don't want. And in true and rightly capitalistic form, Mick's doing fine, and would resent (rightly) sharing his own wealth.
The lesson: Don't listen to the rhetoric (especially of entertainers and politicians) and take note of their personal actions for themselves.
Mick's been a staunch Labour supporter since the 80s (that includes during the Red Wedge era). Furthermore, Simply Red and many bands of their era were able to pursue their creative talents thanks to The Post War Consensus - The investment in public housing and infrastructure, public education, arts grants/funding, etc. Lastly, Mick and co didn't write this song; it's a cover of a song written by an American group in 1982.
Too true x
great version by simply red, still very timely in the 21st century........thanks for posting!
Is this a cover
80'S ARTISTS TELLING OUR STORY... THANKS GREED
