Keep your larynx in a neutral position is crucial for successful upper register singing. Without keeping it neutral or slightly lowered the tendency will be for the throat to close up, constricting airflow and forcing you to strain to get that high note out! You have heard singing teachers talk about not reaching up for the high note. These are some exercises that can help you stop reaching for the high note and start making successful high range phrases. Additionally, with the increased airflow and more release that your vocal folds can achieve you'll increase your agility and ability to sing riffs, runs and the glides that pop music depends on for maximum expressivity.
    Enjoy!

Jeff Rolka that's actually a common practice after TH-cam decided to shutdown ads for small channels.. everyone's putting out the donate info in the description.. at least here in Russia

Right on! It didn't help that they killed FanFunding in February either. I didn't really emphasize that too much, but donations did come in through it regularly and I was bummed that they discontinued it.

I keep a list of the most challenging exercises, over many of your videos and my progress with each. Today I have been through each using the knuckle in position and the results are incredible. Whenever there is a problem hitting a note, boom!! up she comes. This is fantastic! Anyone who says you can't learn to sing correctly from youtube, clearly hasn't tried your channel. Excellent work!!

Hello and thanks for getting in touch! Awesome questions!
Regarding your jaw in this video, yes, keep it still. The fingers are there to keep it from closing even during the breath cycle.
Lip Trill troubles can be facial tension or airflow related: or both! Try this:
    th-cam.com/video/nMwkzmH1mHc/w-d-xo.html
If you have your larynx too far down you can end up sounding a bit operatic, what we really are looking for a neutral position. Check out it's position in a mirror when you're neither singing or taking a breath. This is a good starting point. It isn't about head vs. chest in this case but aperture of the top of the esophagus and space in the aural cavity.
Good resonance balancing videos; there are several. Start with these:
    th-cam.com/video/5VoRQUTkZi0/w-d-xo.html
    th-cam.com/video/JT8Nn3yhVbw/w-d-xo.html
The new hybrid exercise video is good for vocal fold engagement/balance:

I hope this helps! If you need clarification on any of this, drop by my weekly Office Hours:

Hello Jeff, thank you for your lessons! will these exercises strengthen the muscles surrounding the larynx, so that they’ll keep the larynx from rising or are these exercises just good habits to keep the larynx from rising?

Wow. This was extremely difficult for me but effective. I have an exceptionally low voice. My transition starts around A/Bb. Should I try this exercise in a slightly lower range?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 ปีที่แล้ว

That would be a rather low area. It's possible that lower keys may be better, but I would also assess your vowel alignment and appoggio practice in a comfortable range to make sure you're starting your transition at the appropriate tessitura.
      Thanks for watching!

    Let me ask you something.
I am a bass baritone, and my range is C2-E4 (sometimes I can hit B1, but it's not comfortable).
Do you think I'll have more low or high notes with time? I am 21 years old.
I am watching all of your videos about bass baritones and practicing your exercises as well. It's really helpful. Best wishes.

Hi Jeff, great vid as always.
When I press my knuckle above my larynx should I feel my tongue push my throat out against my knuckle as far as I can to open the throat ? As it naturally wants to stay relaxed, but I’m assuming this relaxed position is narrowing the space in the throat?

  • @jackrussell3755

last exercise didn’t help cannot seem to stop it from pushing out, i feel if i can stop it from doing that it will solve the whole problem of my larynx from raising

I have a serious question now a while back I discovered that I was pulling chest and it immediately took away my whistle range and my headvoice. So I learn mix voice it help regain my headvoice but not fully now a F5 which used to be powerful is strained. I used to be able to substain a B5 in headvoice very powerful but now that range has vanish but I notice everytime I did larynx control excersise I began to gain that range back. Because everytime I try I sing higher in headvoice it would break or fight me. So I notice when I practice these excersises that range came back. So what do you recommend to practice this everyday because I can’t fully developed mix with a weak headvoice.

so I have questions I can hit E6 when my lrynx low but when its high I can't seem to hit that note. I practice whistle/falsetto/mixed voice excerise is mixed voice excersise rasing my lrynx and I like how excerise is specific for baritone but my range is higher than baritone my lowest note is E2 and my highest is E6 but increase from A5 to E6 in headvoice.

I might be late here but I'll just put my hopes on a reply ^^ In the knuckle excercise, the soft spot does it have to stay soft? I am trying to produce an operatic sound and pushing the tongue back and down like in a yawn seems to help me keeping the laxynx low but it tightens that soft spot and pushes it out. Any tips on that? I hope I haven't given myself a bad habit

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I don't mean to be evasive, but it kind of depends. One of the skills we have to cultivate in order to maintain vowel alignment is a decoupling of the motions of the tongue and those of the larynx. That yawning feeling you're using is most likely helping you keep your larynx down. That's a good thing! The muscle connection that still exists that is depressing the tongue may compromise the shape of some of your vowels - that's not so good. That being said, in opera, particularly on higher passages, there is historical precedence to allow for wide variations in vowel formation in order to maintain consistent phonation. In english: when you sing high, you can sing a different vowel sound than what is in the libretto in order to sound good. There are limits to that, of course, though one female soprano was unabashedly open about singing whatever vowel sounded good on higher passages regardless of the text.
Sorry that this isn't more definitive, but it really depends on several factors.
      Jeff

Thank you for replying! :D Good to know I seem to not be doing everything wrong ^^ I will try to do your exercises here daily as accurate as possible and see what comes of it :) It's all training afterall, right? ^^ In the higher ranges vowels really do get harder to tell apart so maybe I should try what that soprano you mentioned did.
Thanks again and thank you for these videos! They are great help!

Great videos Jeff. Unfortunately I began my singing in the 90s with stuff like Nirvana and have been singing wrong for a long time. Also I think my range is between a bass and baritone, but I grew up singing along with tenors. So everything has been from my very tight throat. I have spent years trying to correct this with nothing but you tube and while I have made progress, my tone has suffered. I have experimented a lot, trying to find the right balance between head and chest, while keeping a clear airflow. Anyway in regards to this video When you stick your fingers in your cheeks, you say to keep an eye on the jaw. Are we suppose to watch to make sure the jaw doesn't move? And I am having great difficulty making M's with nothing but lips. I also struggle with the mouth trill. Does this suggest I have facial tension? Tongue tension? There are just so many variables, it can be discouraging. So I really appreciate your work here. I think it is helping. When I drop the larynx and open the throat, I've noticed I sound more opera. I can take it so far back that I start to sound like Kermit the frog. To lessen the Opera sound and get something more natural, is that about balancing head and chest voice? 2 more questions:) Do you have a video about how to get good resonance from sinus cavities or how to balance head and chest voice?h And lastly, do you have a video showing how to correctly activate or engage the vocal folds? Thanks so much for your work!

Grab it if you have to or really stick it out. It may take a little practice but it will really help with vowel formation and as such overall tonal consistency. Keep going!
